actually in a elimination game, going with the backup is a slap in the face to luongo. it is a direct statement from management that they think schnieder is the better goalie for the team. hes butt hurt and he will continue to be butt hurt, its very realistic that he asks for a trade after this.
Agreed, but in this business, what's more important - winning, or protecting egos? It's not an easy job, but I sure hope management is focused on winning.
last year it was protecting egos. this year im glad they made the right choice. im curious to see how luongo actually handles it after the season is done as ive found hes quick to blame his team/teammates before he admits his own faults. should be a very interesting offseason when it comes.
What can Lu say though? He didn't play himself out of the starting job. His team was not there to put up for him when he held up his end of the bargain. The team does appear to play a better game with Schneider in net, so have they lost confidence in Lu? With Schneider being the undisputed starter til he falters, I wonder what the dynamic in the room is like right now. How butthurt is Lu really? I can't imagine that would be a good energy to rub off on the rest of the team.
A possible way this can resolve, Schneider gets us out of round 1. The Canucks lose a game or two in round 2 which gives Lu a chance to get back in net and he plays air tight from there on in so AV/MG have no need to put Schneider in. LOTS of things need to go right for this scenario to play out, its much easier to speculate on what will happen in the offseason.

A shit team would take luongo in a heart beat, not only could he be a good starter for most those teams he would also be a marketing peice
plus Luongo is really solid in the regular season!

So anyone want to talk about the end of the Luongo era? Or is that irrelevant for now?
bet he'll start next game :)
I bet he won't.
It would be an asinine move to put Luongo back in for game 5. If the series was tied 2-2, then maybe... but with no mulligans left, you can't go with the statistically poorer choice and hope for the best.
Make no mistake, Schneider will play every remaining game of this series, and if the Canucks do miraculously make it to the second round, he'll start that too, until he has a truly bad game. Then we might see Luongo again.
I guess there is a REMOTE chance we'll see Luongo start another game in this series... and that's if Schneider craps the bed really badly and lets in like four goals early, gets pulled, and the Canucks complete a miracle comeback to win... then Luongo will start the next game. But barring that scenario, it's Ride the Schneid.

I like this strategy. I wish AV would do this for the rest of the playoffs for our goalie situation. Instead Goalie #1 and Goalie #2, We have Goalie 1A and Goalie 1B and keep switching the Goalies after every couple of losses.

The problem I have with Luongo is down low with a lot of traffic the puck always finds it's way into the net.
Every time there is a big pile up in front of him, the puck goes into the net.
This is what troubles me. Schneider is better down low which is why I like him right now over Luongo, especially in the playoffs.
The two goalies are supporting each other........ perhaps the media and fans should do the same. Wait till it's over, then lynch whoever you want.
There's no room for animosity in the dressing room. I cheer for who ever is in the net.......... OK, so more for SSSSSssssssss, but.......

There was an article on his FA status and plays out each sanario. I dig that out when I'm home

The media plays the Debbie Downer because it's what sells newspapers, generates web traffic, etc. In fact, our tendency to cannibalize our sports teams is really a microcosm of Vancouver attitudes at large. We bitch about everything and are never satisfied.

It will be very difficult to trade Luongo and his contract. Teams will consider it a salary dump and give very little in return for what is, in fact, a great goalie with a good contract (given the cap hit and the fact that there are outs for either camp after x yrs). He also won't want to play for a team with no chance of a cup. Very limited options, very limited gain for the Canucks.
Trading Schneider on the other hand, should land the Canucks 1, perhaps 2 impact players + a draft pick or two. Plus, you'd have to pay him around 4M, let's say thats the cap hit for shits and giggles.
So, trade Luongo get little in return plus a measly 1.3M to play with or trade Schneider and get some legitimate top 6 assets to help them win a Cup during this so-called "Sedin Window".
Keep in mind how difficult it will be to move Luongo compared to Schneider. MG has all the bargaining power with Schneider and teams will likely try to outbid each other and offer a hell of lot. With Luongo, MG loses all bargaining power because he's already told the other GM's that he's running with Schneider and has to lose Lu's contract...
MG this offseason = :fulloffuck:
I doubt Cory gets $4m. He's got two seasons under his belt, that doesn't make a $4m payday. Yes, he's getting older but he still hasn't been a starter yet in the NHL. I'm guessing $2.75-$3m each for two years if he gets re-signed. If he signs for $4m, it will be for a longer term. He's an RFA this year, meaning the Canucks will want to get him cheap while they can and eat up a year of his UFA status while Cory goes out and proves himself as a starter.
As for Luongo, his contract isn't as big as most people think. $5.33m is a relatively small cap hit, especially with a rising cap every year. Also, Lu has an "out" clause for whatever franchise he's with that says they can dump him after 8 years. Effectively, it is a SIX year deal at $5.33m a year. No, he won't bring the return Schnoo would but don't think it will be hard to trade Lu.
The factors that will go into whether or not he's traded will be...
1. NTC. He has to want to get traded.
2. The CBA. We might have another lockout on our hands if the league and NHLPA can't come to an agreement. If there are new rules with the CBA, whatever we're talking about now goes out the window.
3. Trade partners: New Jersey and Tampa Bay are the most likely destinations since they have no goaltending next year and no high-end goalie prospects. Florida has Jakob Markstrom waiting but he's 22 and Lu could mentor him for a few years. Washington seems set on a Holtby/Neuvirth combo for another year. Toronto...never know what Burke wants. Islanders would have to get DiPietro to retire.

What worries me most is that the past trades with goalies, the team only gotten prospects or picks in return. None of the really impact players.
Halak to Blue for Eller and Schultz
Bryzgalov's rights were traded for a 3rd round.
Varlamov was for a 1st and 2nd rounders.
EVEN when we got Luongo, we only gave up Auld, Bertuzzi, Allen, and a pick. lol hahaha
Halak and Varlamov were mostly unproven commodities. Bryz wasn't under contract so a 3rd rounder was a GREAT deal for just rights. Rights to Hamhuis went for the same, I think. Halak had a great playoff run. Varlamov was inconsistent.
When we traded for Lu, the NHL was a much different place and Luongo didn't have the numbers (wins, mostly) to back up a bigger trade demand.
However, both Luongo and Schneider have proven they can play with the best in the league. Jennings and President's Trophy last year, another President's this year.

04-19-2012, 11:57 AM
Colorado's 1st and 2nd was a great return for Varlamov. The Avs first rounder had a chance to turn out to be a top-5 pick before the start of the season.
Varlamov also had a recurring groin injury and only had 59 games under his belt at the time.

While Crosby is definitely a whiny little bitch at times (I still like him as a player) the annoying thing is because people already hate him, they take every little thing Crosby does and turn it into a negative. I remember reading posts on HFBoards about how Crosby was such a bitch for starting a fight with Hartnell during game 3 (which led to a big scrum), yet in the replay Hartnell was clearly the one who initiated it by grabbing Crosby's stick (say that fast and it sounds wrong). Goes to show people will see what they want to see.
People love to hate Crosby. If he sucked, nobody would care about him..but he's the best hockey player in the world.

You're in a Canucks forum so I simply asked people not to disrespect the Canucks, and by that I meant don't bash Luongo, a guy who has gotten this franchise to the Stanley Cup Finals, in the middle of a game in which he isn't even playing in....You don't have to listen to me, but I just thought I'd throw my opinion out there, and based on the amount of 'thanks' I got on the post, I'm assuming that most people agreed with it...btw, nice to see you're still butthurt about me accusing you of being disrespectful towards our players when, really, I was just generally speaking...makes you seem a little insecure...
So back to the topic of Crosby...

People that hate Crosby are more into the drama of hockey than the game.
His talent is undeniable. I don't care what he's like. Guy leads by example on the ice. Youngest Art Ross and Hart winner, youngest captain to win the Cup, scored the game winning goal to set all kinds of records for Canada...won us gold on home soil. That shit is AMAZING. He's not even 25 yet. It's like it's the kid's destiny to be great. There's only ONE other goal in Canadian history that even compares and that just won a made up tournament for pros because they're not allowed to play in the Olympics at the time.
Crosby is a once in a generation talent...and most of that "whining" is just misinterpreted. The guy wants to win at all costs.

I don't understand all the hate that Crosby's getting.
But it's common for people to be jealous and want to shit on someone that's at the top.
No one likes #1, because they all want to be there.
IMO, he's just simply in the spotlight at all times, and when he intensify his game and takes it up a gear,
people call him a whiny bitch and question his motives when he tries to start some fights.
At the same time, a bunch of Canuck fans in here are also questioning Henrik Sedin's lack of intensity.
And I'm not sure if being the most classy player while getting beat around like a rag doll going to win any cups.

Braden Holtby (born September 16, 1989) is a God secretly disguised as a Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender from Lloydminster, Saskatchewan who is currently playing for the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was selected 93rd overall by the Capitals in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.
In his free time Braden Holtby enjoys feasting on the still beating hearts of his defeated enemies, preparing for the next game, and watching baseball. In the off season he sometimes likes to go camping. Holby is also capable of wingless flight, although he doesn't like to show off because, let's be honest, he's just not that kind of guy.

So has he had it coming since he entered the league? He's improved in some aspect of his game every year since he's been in the NHL. He has the best backhand shot in the world and his faceoffs got better this season too.
Won't be best player for long?? What player in the league has accomplished what he has so far? Until someone does what he's done, he'll have it coming to him....

anyone read this shit tsn posted?
Your! Call: Are Luongo's days in Vancouver numbered? (http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=393708)
Are Roberto Luongo's days in a Vancouver Canucks uniform numbered?
Whenever the off-season arrives for the Canucks, they'll find themselves in a situation no one could have predicted three years ago.
In 2009, the Canucks signed goaltender Roberto Luongo to a 12-year, $64-million contract extension, essentially pegging him as the team's starter until he was ready to retire.
He was fresh off a season in which he was nominated for the Vezina Trophy, Lester B. Pearson Award and Hart Memorial Trophy, and he was the team's captain. Signing him long term seemed like a no-brainer.
What they did not foresee was the emergence of their 2004 first round draft pick, Cory Schneider. At that point, the 23-year old goaltender had appeared in a total of eight NHL games. He had recorded two wins, a GAA of 3.38 and a save percentage of .877.
In Vancouver's 2011 playoff run, Luongo took his team to within one game of winning the Stanley Cup. Before Game 6 against the Bruins, many picked him to win the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP if the Canucks had closed the deal.
This year, after the Canucks lost Games 1 and 2 of their first round series against the L.A. Kings, Luongo was seen as one of the team's best performers in those games. Yet "back-up" Schneider was given the Game 3 start. He lost that game by a score of 1-0.
With Vancouver's back up against the proverbial wall for Game 4, coach Alain Vigneault went back to Schneider, sending a clear message that he saw the understudy as his best chance to extend the series.
And it worked.
Luongo, who only three years ago was signed to be the Canucks starter for 12 years, has lost his claim to that title just two seasons after the contract took effect.
With Schneider slated to become a restricted free agent this summer, the Canucks will have the right to match any offer sheet placed in front of him, and they'll likely re-sign him.
So are Luongo's days in Vancouver numbered?
As always, it's Your! Call.

It's not just something TSN posted, similar articles have been posted on all news outlets.
Reality is one of the two has to be moved this off-season, and while Luongo is the harder one to move because of his salary and NTC, there is a chance that Schneider will be the one still with the team next October.

Right now, from what i have seen and what I have read, it can be either goalies. Down 3-0, there is nothing to lose for the Nuck's to keep playing Schneider. Basically, they could be show casing him to all the potential teams for an off season deal. Or the writing is on the wall and they are going to try to move Lu, which is really less likely since market value may be lowered since the team went with Schides. I don't think Lu's contract will hinder a trade. Since it has been mentioned, a low cap hit, the $10M part of the contract is over and all that remains is the $6M and lower portions of the contract. Only thing that can hinder a move is the NMC.
But one thing is for sure, they supposedly have a capable backup goalie in Eddie Lack so if not this offseason, next off season someone will be gone.

I don't think you get what I'm saying; yes, he's the greatest player in the league, and yes, that alone could be a reason for guys to go after him, but the fact of the matter is that he's getting involved in, and often even initiating fights.....Nobody wants to be known as the guy who ultimately ends Crosby's career early, seeing how he's thought of as god's gift to hockey by most of the hockey world...but the way he plays (getting involved and initiating fights), somebody is eventually going to treat him like any other guy and end up knocking him out....The difference is though that for any other guy it would probably be a small concussion, probably keep him out for 10-15 days....but one more concussion for Crosby? ehhh, he's probably done...............Shit, I wouldn't be surprised if he suffered severe brain damage if he got another major concussion....

Torres was suspended indefinitely Wednesday, pending an in-person hearing held today at the NHL's New York Office, for a hit on Chicago forward Marian Hossa 11:42 into the first period of Game 3 of the teams' Western Conference Quarterfinal series in Chicago on Tuesday, April 17.

I believe theres no goalie coming close to breaking any records Brodeur and Roy have set.
One of the best ever for sure. Not only a great goalie but pretty much forced the NHL to enact the new trapezoid rule to minimize his puck handling prowess.

this isn't the WHL. starting goalies want to be the starting goalie every night. no NHL team has two goalies that have the skill of a starting goalie, but only play 41 games a year.
playing goalie is their passion, they didn't spend countless hours training to be what they are now just to get benched 50% of the time.

I'm not saying goalies WANT to do it, because I'm sure they certainly don't, especially come playoff time, but there are some teams this year that 2 goalies that are worthy of being #1's....

Halak signed a 4-year $15-mill contract with St.Louis in 2010 and Elliot just signed a 2-year extension for $3.6-mill....So St.Louis is basically spending $5.5-mill/year on 2 solid goalies.

yeah that is basically the difference, if the goalies can put egos in check, the blues win big here(assuming elliots season isnt fluke), they get 2 goalies for the price of one really good goalie, where as in vancouvers situation you are looking at 9-10 mil to keep lu and corey, I just don't think that is feasible in a salary system, you are sacrificing a lot of potential depth cap.

I really think Elliot signing with the Blues is a win for both sides....He'll split time Halak while Hitchcock's defensive style of play will inflate his stats....2 years later and he'll get a fat contract, which he arguably may not truly be worth....That said, Elliot was playing great before Hitchcock took over and he looked well on his way to stealing the #1 spot from Halak...

Hopefully Lappy is put onto the 2nd line and we reconfigure the 4th line. Speaking of 4th lines, we need an answer to LA's 4th line. They've played very well and definitely a lot better than ours.

yes the longer the rest the better for the canucks but could also hurt them. in the last 12 months they have played a lot of hockey, its caught up to them down the stretch run therefore the rest is good. but at the same time they just won a big game, you dont want the emotions to cool down.

There's the precedent for a similar hit. If anyone gets 25 or less for something like that then Torres has a right to be pissed for getting that much. I don't know if this hit was similar to the Rome hit last year but 25 is A LOT for a hit that didn't seem as bad as some others.

Shanahan really dropped the hammer on Torres. As much as I agree that the NHL is inconsistent in its disciplinary action on players, I think that the twenty five game suspension is the right decision.
If the league is serious about protecting players and making player safety a priority, maybe a big suspension is one of the ways to deter the players from making hits like that nasty one on Hossa:
Torres' rap sheet of nasty hits:
Watch: Torres' history of nasty hits - sportsnet.ca (http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/2012/04/18/raffi_torres_phoenix_coyotes_hits_suspensions_hoss a/?utm_source=Hockey%20lineup%20RSS-Images&utm_medium=feed&utm_content=Watch%3A%20Torres%27%20history%20of%20 nasty%20hits)
MarkyMark

It's not in the right direction because as soon as a player of any relevance does that same hit they will get 5 or less. The only people who should be worried are players like Matt Cooke who's probably a hit like that away from getting the same deal.
pastarocket
04-21-2012, 09:37 AM
Here's a thought. Back in the day, it was rare to see star players like Gretzky receive nasty hits, blindside hits to the head etc. Why?
One of the reasons is because the NHL did not have the instigator rule.
What if the league changed the penalties for the instigator rule or removed the rule?
If any player were to make an illegal hit on other player, star player or 4th line guy, you would have the enforcers, the goons, stand up for their team mate and fight the player.
Bottom line: Other players would make players who make these illegal hits accountable for their actions.
You may see less of these players making illegal hits on other players because you would know that the other team's enforcer, the goon, would punish you for the hit.
Enforcers like Dave Semenko or Marty McSorley acted as a big deterrent to players who may have wanted to make a big hit to Gretzky because they knew those guys would fight the opposing player.
I really want to see the NHL do something meaningful to ensure player safety. It's horrible to see any player, whether a star player, or the 4th line plumber, get seriously hurt by an illegal hit.
Here is Rule 46 about the instigator rule for a player starting a fight:
Official Rules - Rule 46: Fighting - NHL.com - Rules (http://www.nhl.com/ice/page.htm?id=26336)
This is from the NHL rulebook: A player who is deemed to be both the instigator and aggressor of an altercation shall be assessed an instigating minor penalty, a major penalty for fighting, a ten-minute misconduct (instigator) and a game misconduct penalty (aggressor).
Article on support for removing the instigator rule: Health Petition: The National Hockey League: Remove the instigator rule | Change.org (http://www.change.org/petitions/the-national-hockey-league-remove-the-instigator-rule)

I don't think they are making an example of Torres for other players. This suspension is purely to send a message to Raffi and to Raffi only (rightly or wrongly).
The same hit by another player who doesn't have a rap sheet as long as Raffi or Cooke will get the usual one or two games suspension (or $2500 fine if you're a star like Weber).

I can understand that they want to send a message to Raffi to let him know he can't continue to make these hits, but I don't get how they go from 2-game suspension to 25-game suspension....doesn't make sense.......and I say that because I'm pretty sure the last time Torres made a similar hit in which he left his feet and targeted the head, he only got 2 games.........His suspensions should be increasing gradually...not 2 games to 25...
Check this video out:

Shanahan states that Torres is a repeat offender, doing something very similar to this 9 months ago, and that he has done something in the last 3 games straight in which he has targetted somebody's head....he states that he was warned just before the game....and all Torres gets is a 2-game suspension.....now all of a sudden, they decide to jump to 25?? Move over Schneider, Kevin Bieksa’s Ryan Kesler impersonation is amazing | The Province (http://blogs.theprovince.com/2012/04/21/move-over-schneider-kevin-bieksas-ryan-kesler-impersonation-is-amazing/)
Does everyone remember during the Olympics, when Ryan Kesler was the enemy? And how he claimed to hate Canada?
“Ryan Kesler calmly spit out the words and, a few minutes later, tried to grab them back. Well, sort of.
“I hate them,” said the American winger of Team Canada, the two teams meeting Sunday night in their final preliminary-round game of the Olympic hockey tournament.” (Full link HERE)
At the time, some fans got upset at Ryan, wondering how he could hate a country he made his living in. Most people, however, assumed it was just gamesmanship. When you’re playing in one of the biggest games of your life, you don’t want to look across the ice and see your friends, you want to look across and see the enemy. When you’re flying into the corners at high speeds, you don’t want to be thinking “Oh shoot, that guy is my car pool ride” you want to be thinking “I wonder how much he likes the taste of my elbow.”
But what if Ryan Kesler was saying this during the playoffs when his allegiance to his country was not on the line? What if Ryan Kesler was found out saying that he still hates Canada? What if Ryan Kesler gave an interview to Mike Dunsmore of FOX Sports Radio after game four stating that American fans are better than Canadian fans? FOX Sports sent the following to the Vancouver media and here is what Ryan had to say:
“I’m an American, and I like playing in the States. The fans in Canada are great but this is where the real hockey fans are in my opinion. I love the States and this will always be home for me.”
”I can’t say enough about playing in the States. We’ll go back to Canada, I’m sure the crowd won’t be as good there, but hopefully we’ll get back to L.A. where the real crowd is. Growing up in Michigan, I love playing in the States.”
I present to you, the evidence...
