Damn, was so excited that the Canadian dollar was at par or slightly higher. I'm planning on going down to the States for a week. Went to the exchange places in Crystal Mall today and they are all out of American. Couldn't make it to VBCE in time.
Oh well, hopefully the exchange rate stays or even go up a bit. LOL.

Anyone know what happened earlier this morning at this apartment on Renfrew/Nootka st. near Renfrew Community Center?
Drove by this morning to work and saw the whole area wrapped around with police tape and parked with cop cars all around. Came home from work tonight and still saw the tape up with lots of cop cars and the forensic investigation unit vehicle parked too.
Homicide?

Driver in crash with VPD cruiser may be linked to homicide - News1130 (http://www.news1130.com/news/local/article/390579--driver-in-crash-with-vpd-cruiser-may-be-linked-to-homicide)
Broadway East bound in front of Vantech Highschool was blocked off as I was headed West bound at 6am, looked like the aftermath of a police chase.
White SUV crashed front first into the lawn/bushes of the church next to Vantech, the rear end of the white SUV was smashed up pretty bad, half a block West in front of Vantech a VPD Yukon had some front end damage with an officer taking pictures of the damage, almost appears if the VPD Yukon hit the White SUV during a chase. .

Question regarding MSP and BC's Healthcare system for low-income residents:
My mother's friend has two young children (2 and 6 years of age) who are in need of dental care (i.e. cavities). She's a single working low-income mother. She's wondering if MSP covers the fillings. I tried looking it up but had no luck. All I found was that MSP does not cover dental services.
Anyone with more info.?

"I accept love, I don't want no money from you, bro.... help out your brothers and sisters, unconditional love for every living thing!"
I always stop if to help if it looks like someone is having car trouble, always. Whether the person be male or female, young or old. Sometimes even if it's just a twenty-something guy who looks like they've got it down pat, they might need a helping hand. Once I stopped for a young guy, turns out hr couldn't find his lug nut key and I happened to have the one he needed. Feels as good to help, as it does to receive the help.

I bought US just when it dipped Friday afternoon......... 1k US for 1.003. Went to VBCE, so no service charge, but frick lineup was bad. If no lineup, I would have got better rate, LOL. It was just 2k, so no biggie. Going south for a couple of weeks.
Sooo was at TBC earlier and on my last race, was behind some guy and made a few attempts to pass him. Contact was made a few times and I guess he got upset before I finally passed him at a corner. Got good distance from him and when the yellow light came on, he caught up to me and hit me on purpose. He was driving pretty aggressively and a few corners later he gets tangled up with another guy and I pass him again. Towards the end of the race, I noticed he was trying to catch up to hit me again. Race is over, we go check our times and the kid keeps looking at me, waiting for me I guess. We finally head out, him and his posse are standing by their cars (A Tiburon and a Civic) so me and my buddies wait a few mins to see if they'll leave. The kid clearly wanted a piece of me cause he would just keep looking at us - we finally decide to leave and he yells out "fuck you bitch, GET THE FUCK OUT OF THE CAR!" I decide to ignore it but my friend snapped, he comes running down the hill as I'm going around the parking lot and attempts to throw something at my car. We pulled after we turned onto Burrows road and we see him and his pack of douchebags going after us. My buddies snapped and got out of our cars and were waiting for them.. they see us hop out and run back to their cars... :speechless:
Stupid fuck, if you can't take a few contacts during a go kart race and getting passed, stay the fuck home or go elsewhere if you wanna act like a hurt ass faggot. :rukidding:

There were predictions the killing of 12 people at a midnight screening of the new Batman movie in the Denver suburb of Aurora may spark an increase in gun sales for self protection. Now comes news that a man legally carrying a handgun inside a Nevada theatre has shot himself accidently in the buttocks.

I think the one that's shown is the updated version, not the original one that looks Asian.
The article says "Harrison declined to provide a copy of the original image, produced by a design team led by Jorge Peral of the Canadian Bank Note Co." which indicates there is no public record of what the original one looked like.

The Dalai Lama's administration acknowledged today that it received $1.7 million a year in the 1960's from the Central Intelligence Agency, but denied reports that the Tibetan leader benefited personally from an annual subsidy of $180,000.
The money allocated for the resistance movement was spent on training volunteers and paying for guerrilla operations against the Chinese, the Tibetan government-in-exile said in a statement. It added that the subsidy earmarked for the Dalai Lama was spent on setting up offices in Geneva and New York and on international lobbying.
The Dalai Lama, 63, a revered spiritual leader both in his Himalayan homeland and in Western nations, fled Tibet in 1959 after a failed uprising against a Chinese military occupation, which began in 1950.
The decade-long covert program to support the Tibetan independence movement was part of the C.I.A.'s worldwide effort to undermine Communist governments, particularly in the Soviet Union and China.
Didn't know about this, figured some would enjoy the info.

Couldn't tell you based on a pic.
Regulation pool and 9-ball tables are 4x8 and 4.5x9' (measured inside the rails), respectively.
If it has a wood top, don't waste your time. If it has a multi-piece, slate top, keep in mind the cost of disassembly, transport and reassembly, including new cloth.

most pool halls have 4.5x9 dont they? i thought only bars had 4x8.
its hard to tell how big that table is because the cues and balls (and triangle) could also be undersized.
i used to have a 4x8 snooker table and i hated that thing lol. it did however teach me how to shoot extremely accurately.
if thats a 3x6 then thats basically a childrens toy.

oh, and that above table has rounded pockets. its a small snooker table and is pretty much a piece of crap if you like playing 8/9 ball.
fliptuner
08-21-2012, 01:10 PM
Snooker tables have rounded pockets and L shaped/square rails vs. 9 ball tables which have angle pockets and pointed rails. fyi
murd0c, the only way to move a table is to disassemble it. If you pick up one end of a table that has a multi-piece, slate top, it will crack the wax joints, shift the leveling shims and there will be a bump or groove in the middle of the playing surface. So it's kind of good for you since you know you can pretty much transport it in your truck. Only downside, is that it's going to take some time to re/re it and you might need new felt.

is this even legal for the RCMP to do?
RCMP in Langley say they have effectively shut down a house party that was set to go ahead in the Fraser Valley community this weekend.
The party was being advertised on Facebook and had 1,000 potential guests.
Police say attendees will find numerous roadblocks and traffic checks instead.
RCMP investigators have been in contact with those believed responsible for the Facebook invitation and now believe it may have been a hoax.
The author has since removed the invitation.
Langley RCMP say they will deploy additional police and volunteer resources as a precaution to ensure public safety.
Abbotsford and Transit police have also been made aware of the potential for a large gathering.
Information is also being shared with police agencies in the Lower Mainland.
Mounties shut down Langley FB party - BC News - Castanet.net (http://www.castanet.net/edition/news-story-79504-3-.htm#79504)
can the RCMP actually stop a gathering discussed on facebook before it even happens? 1100 'confirmed' guests is irrelevant
they can shut down a party that is out of control or causing a disturbance, but can they stop one before it even starts? unless the party was by under agers for under agers maybe...

Back in high school a guy we knew had a house party in a house that's probably 5500 sq feet in Fraser heights with a big back yard with a pool in a cul de sac, by the end of the night the house was
Filled shoulder to shoulder and I was thinking "holy fuck there's alot of people here"
Then I walked out front and a 5 house cul de sac was shoulder to shoulder like a night club as well, I'd say minimum there were 500 people there? And to think the whole party started basically at 6pm that night when the owner of the house said call people and lets have a party lol

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - A person sipping a latte in Yaletown spotted a bunch of people dressed like Bloods gang members from South Central LA on Tuesday.
When Transit Police caught up with them at Langara Station a short while later, they found out the group weren't gangsters at all.
Anne Drennan with Transit Police says they sure looked the part, though.
"There were ten young men dressed in gangster attire, complete with red bandanas and fake tattoos," Drennan says. "One of the young men was openly displaying a handgun and then he stuffed it down the back of his pants."
Officers caught up with the guys at Langara Station and stormed onto the SkyTrain.
They screamed for the "gangsters" to put their hands on their heads and pulled them off the train.
It turns out, the young men were restaurant workers on their way to a dodgeball tournament.
The name of their team is 'The Westside Gangsters.'
Police let them off with a warning after they apologized.

Shit.. for those that wondered what the smoke was on Westminster in Richmond the other night... it was a meth lab house that was going up in flames. No wonder it smelled funky
There were certainly some signs that drew suspicion from neighbours about a house at 4871 Larkspur Ave. which was destroyed by fire Wednesday night.
Inside the house, firefighters who responded to the blaze around 6 p.m. found 30 containers of acetone, a chemical precursor found in methamphetamine drug labs.
According to one neighbour, the house on at least two occasions hosted loud and "crazy" parties that drew dozens of teens to the house in June.
"There were lots of young girls, very crazy," the neighbour said.
The witness, who has young children, was surprised to learn the house contained a drug lab.
"That's really terrible, terrible."
Another neighbour said she saw flames coming from the back of the house as she pulled up to her home and followed a fire truck, but before police arrived.
The house was frequented by "sketchy" people and cars, she said.
Another neighbour said the house was put on the market earlier this year, and the young family who had been living there were tenants who vacated when the house sold.
The house is in the midst of a quiety, family neighbourhood, and another neighbour expressed his surprise that volatile chemicals were found in the house, possibly for the purposes of cooking methamphetamine.
"It definitely surprises me," the neighbour said. "I don't know much about methamphetamine, but yes I would be concerned that it's got that explosive."
This drug lab is not far from where another meth lab was found, at 6251 Gibbons Dr., near James Thompson elementary school, in July of last year.

MADRID — An elderly Spanish woman has destroyed a 19th century church fresco after she attempted to restore it without permission.
The Ecce Homo, a depiction of Christ crowned with thorns painted by local artist Elias Garcia Martinez, has graced the wall of the Santuario de la Misericordia Church in Borja, near Zaragoza, for more than 120 years.
But over the last 18 months its surface has deteriorated because of moisture in the church, causing parts of the painting to flake off.
An elderly woman amateur artist in her 80s, upset at the worsening state of an image she loved to gaze on, took it upon herself to restore the artwork to its former glory, but with devastating results.
http://www.theprovince.com/entertainment/7133314.bin?size=620x400s
The result was a botched repair in which the original face has been almost completely painted over with amateur brushstrokes. The image now resembles an ape, rather than the son of God.
"Unfortunately a local resident with very good intentions decided without consulting anyone that she would restore the fresco," said Javier Silvestre, the councillor reponsible for culture at Borja town hall.
"The result is disastrous." A panel of art historians will meet at the church next week to consider the problem.
The amateur painter carried out her work without anyone noticing.
Descendants of the artist used to spend their vacations in the town and donated the picture to the local municipality.
The "restoration" was only discovered when the relatives made a donation toward its upkeep and an expert was sent out to examine the fresco.
At first church authorities thought the picture had been deliberately vandalized until the octogenarian came forward and admitted her role.
The Centro de Estudios Borjanos, a local cultural organization responsible for preserving the town's artistic heritage, has called for a full investigation into how it was allowed to happen.
"The value of the original work was not very high but it was more of a sentimental value," said a spokesman.
"It was painted by Elias Garcia Martinez who is the father of two well-known local artists and the family had made a donation toward its preservation.
"The church is always open because many people visit ... no one realized what the old woman was doing until she had finished," the spokesman said.
Officials hope to find out what materials the woman used in her work on the fresco to help experts in undoing the damage.

People have issues with uneven spray from all different brands of spray cans. Usually it's not a result of a bad can, but painting when the ambient heat is too high or holding the can too far back. Not saying that's definitely the case here, just that it's a possibility.

- attempted to use an allen key to take the plug off(he came to ask me for some allen keys)

Brain Hacking: Scientists Extract Personal Secrets With Commercial Hardware | TechCrunch (http://techcrunch.com/2012/08/27/brain-hacking-scientists-extract-personal-secrets-with-commercial-hardware/)
Chalk this up to super-creepy: scientists have discovered a way to mind-read personal secrets, such as bank PIN numbers and personal associations, using a cheap headset. Utilizing commercial brain-wave reading devices, often used for hands-free gaming, the researchers discovered that they could identify when subjects recognized familiar objects, faces, or locations, which helped them better guess sensitive information. Security interrogators could benefit most immediately from the new brain hacking technique, since it would reveal when suspects are actually familiar with the face of a potential accomplice. As for bank information, scientists could guess the first PIN number only 40% of the time. But, as brain-controlled devices become more common, the researches warn that viruses could discretely display images on a screen and help tech-savvy thieves narrow down their search for private information.
Brainwave-reading devices, which control computers hands-free, have become increasingly popular for entertainment, control of prosthetics for paralyzed individuals, and military application. The latest commercial versions of brain-reading devices, often used by researchers and software developers, can cost as little as $300 (the product pictured above is the “Emotiv“).
So, in the eerily titled, “On the Feasibility of Side-Channel Attacks with Brain-Computer Interfaces,” a team of researchers from Oxford, Berkeley, and Geneva tested the liklihood that hackers could hijack the device and attempt to uncover sensitive information.
“More specifically, we are interested in understanding how easily this technology can be turned against its users to reveal their private information, that is, information they would not knowingly or willingly share,” wrote the researchers.
Participants were outfitted with commercial-grade brain-wave reading devices and shown a list of people, possible PIN numbers, and the likely location of their home. Often, when the researchers stumbled upon the actual information they were seeking, they saw an expected spike in brain-wave P300, which is known to activate when presented with familiar information. Researchers could guess the correct answer for participants’ first PIN number 20% of the time, the regional location of their home 30%, birth month 60%, and the bank branch of their ATM 30%.
With refinement, the researchers imagine that the brain-hacking technique will get more accurate. For instance, when trying to identify a persons home, “we envision possible future attacks in which the true geo- graphic location of a user is leaked by showing maps or landmarks with increased accuracy.”
For now, the most immediate benefit is for law enforcement interrogation (which is essentially a guessing game). This new technique would reveal, with higher probability, when a subject actually recoginizes the face of a potential accomplice.
But, of course, the applications are endless. Brands could use it to identify the mass-market awareness of a particular product. Facebook could identify whether users actually know the people they recommend under the “people you may know” section. As brain-wave reading technologies become more pervasive, it appears we will inadvertently leave ourselves vulnerable to a new security threat: mind hacking.

New regulations would require 54 miles per gallon
WASHINGTON — The Obama administration is set to announce new regulations that would force the average gas mileage of new cars and trucks to nearly double in the next 13 years.
The rules, first proposed last year, would require new cars and trucks to average 54.5 miles per gallon in combined city and highway driving by 2025, up from 28.6 mpg at the end of 2011. Administration officials revealed details of the rule on condition of anonymity ahead of an announcement expected Tuesday.
Obama announced last year he had reached a deal with automakers to raise fuel-efficiency standards, saving drivers money at the pump and dramatically cutting heat-trapping gases coming from tailpipes.
The changes will raise new car prices, but the government says that will be offset by savings at the pump.

no idea what the original looks like but I call fake because
a) in the first pic the cover doesn't fit snugly over the box (you can see extra space around the sides)
b) looks like there is a piece of uncut string coming off the case in the second pic
edit:
100% fake: Check out the "b" on the headphone on the box, that's what its supposed to look like.
On the headphone in the last pic it looks like a "6". I am looking at a pair of legit beats in my hands right now and they are exactly like the ones in the first pic.

BBC News - Gravitational waves spotted from white-dwarf pair (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-19408363?SThisFB)
Gravitational waves spotted from white-dwarf pair
By Jason Palmer Science and technology reporter, BBC News
http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/62546000/jpg/_62546335_wd_03.jpg
Researchers have spotted visible-light evidence for one of astronomy's most elusive targets - gravitational waves - in the orbit of a pair of dead stars.
Until now, these ripples in space-time, first predicted by Einstein, have only been inferred from radio-wave sources.
But a change in the orbits of two white dwarf stars orbiting one another 3,000 light-years away is further proof of the waves that can literally be seen.
A study to be reported in Astrophysical Journal Letters describes the pair.
Gravitational waves were a significant part of Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity, which viewed space itself as a malleable construct, and the gravity of massive objects as a force that could effectively warp it.
Catching sight of an actual gravitational wave, however, is a tricky business; their effects tend to be tiny and the have so far eluded discovery in Earth-bound experiments.
But the wider Universe provides a laboratory in which the indirect effects of gravitational waves can be measured.
Six-second switch
In principle, any two massive objects orbiting one another can emit gravitational waves, slowly losing the momentum of their orbits into the waves.
The effect is to slightly change the size of the orbits, and the time it takes to complete them.
A measurement of a minuscule change in the orbits of rapidly rotating neutron stars called pulsars garnered the 1993 Nobel Prize in physics.
But pulling off the same trick with visible light has seemed unlikely until now.
It is the extreme nature of the pair of white dwarf stars known as J0651 - each a substantial fraction of our Sun's mass orbiting each other at a distance just a third that between the Earth and Moon - that increases the magnitude of the gravitational waves.
As members of the same team reported in Astrophysical Journal in 2011, the pair orbit each other in less than 13 minutes.
Since that discovery, the team has been keenly watching the pair "eclipse" one another, with each briefly blocking out the other's light as seen from Earth.
Over a period of 13 months, the team saw the orbital period reduce by less than a thousandth of a second, but the effect also shifts when the eclipse time is expected to happen, and that has shifted back by some six seconds since the pair were discovered.
"A lot of these indirect measurements have taken people years, mostly because the orbits are so much longer," explained lead author of the study, JJ Hermes from the University of Texas at Austin.
Mr Hermes told BBC News that he liked the idea that such a groundbreaking result was established in part by using a telescope nearly as old as Einstein's theory: the Otto Struve 2.1m telescope at the McDonald Observatory in Texas.
"There have been 30 years of using radio telescopes and timing pulsars, but this is the first time we've been able to detect the influence of gravitational wave radiation using an optical telescope," he told BBC News.
The team will continue to watch the pair's tightening orbit, and the expected eclipse time should shift back by another 20 seconds by next May. The results will also help guide observations from "direct detection" experiments.
These, such as the proposed eLisa project, aim to measure the tiny relative movements of vastly separated detectors as gravitational waves pass - a final, irrefutable proof that the waves are what relativity predicted so long ago.
"It would be a really nice confirmation if we got one of these laser interferometer missions going - we'd know exactly what to look for," Mr Hermes said.
"We've crunched the numbers, and eLisa would be able to detect this thing in about a week."

Bruce Willis Planning Legal Battle to Leave iTunes Library in His Will
Jamie Condliffe
Action movie legend Bruce Willis is apparently eyeing up a legal battle in order to guarantee that he can pass his massive iTunes library onto his children when he dies.
The Daily Mail is reporting that Willis is concerned about the fact that upon his death his entire music collection will revert to Apple ownership. As a result, he's taking some major steps to ensure that his tunes instead pass directly to his three daughters.
So far, he's been looking into "family trusts" which act as legal holders of the downloaded music. But the Mail also reports that he's prepared to take Apple to court over the issue. Speaking to the Mail, lawyer Chirs Walton explained:
"Lots of people will be surprised on learning all those tracks and books they have bought over the years don't actually belong to them. It's only natural you would want to pass them on to a loved one. The law will catch up, but ideally Apple and the like will update their policies and work out the best solution for their customers."
While the idea of Willis battling Apple in order to hand over his MP3s to his daughters sounds a little absurd, it could well set a precedent which shapes the future of digital rights. In the meantime, though, let's watch Willis singing Under The Boardwalk, which must be top of the list of songs he wants to keep in the family.

ICBC increases price due to fake claims etc.. they should also focus on those people who fraud against them like abusing DEMO license plate usage. Shouldn't treated as every day use car for employees to travel between work and home.

I say go for it and rat on them.
Would you trust an insurance company if you find out they throw out year old documents with no E version of the document, in order to save space?
Business is business is business, if they are not doing shit properly who know what other shortcuts they are making in their shop/dealership, which in turns screws US or whoever buys from that company. You should out their name so I know never to buy from them.
Also, its not your job to determine if they are at fault, thats ICBC's job. When you tell ICBC of your concern they potentially launch an investigation which in turn they will decide if its an abuse of demo plate or not. So even if you rat, if they have a valid reason like "testing the car out for long term problems" or something like murdoc said, then they keep doing what they are doing and everything is okay.

"testing the car out for long term problems" I doubt those small used auto dealers are they keen on testing cars. Even if its true, 2 weeks is enough (consider I see it every day), but i have seen it in my condo garage for at least a month or more.
btw, who knows those cars they are testing are actually for sale, it could be one of their personal cars but just slap on demo plate, instead of actually being insured.

Nothing, except he is screwing ICBC over while ICBC is screwing over us, but not him as he doesn't even have to pay insurance at all. Just use demo license plate to go every where. Btw the dealership is Chinese own, probably from those mainlanders.
I will be alright, if he does it once or twice per week, but every day???
Also the dealer is located in Vancouver, while they park at the condo in Richmond, if its actually close, I don't mind it, but this tells you they use it for every day work car

Do you think you get an award for reporting him or something? calling ICBC won't do much cause he will make some BS up and they will listen to him. Life is too short to stress about stupid shit like this. Do what you want tho but personally I think you should do a better job at picking your battles

Not really stress about this, just want to be fair, when those mainlanders are benefiting while screwing us honest people at the same time.
Bringing this out, only it in a off topic thread, if this was a really big deal, I would have wrote it in a brand new thread
Some dealerships allow their staff to take home cars and they have to use a demo plate.
