My parents bought new tires not too long ago, but decided to trade in their Corolla. It's already been appraised but now they realized the oems coming from the new car aren't going to be as good as the tires they have since they have all weather tires.

They were thinking of swapping in some random used tires now when they trade it in. Is this a "thing" or pretty much unethical and rarely done?

It's a 2013 Corolla and they said when they were getting the appraisal, the guy at the dealership just did a quick walk around and mostly focused more on the odometer and paper work for the car history.

I've never heard of it being a thing but if it saves yall money and tires are the same size... why not? Doubt the dealer is giving them top dollar on that trade in.

Is it worth the cost of used tires and mount + balance x 2? And are your parents going to use up the oem tires before starting to use the current ones or start using the current ones right away because if the former, then the current ones will be x more years older.

then similarly you can buy a cheapie set and throw them on yourself, who cares if its balanced, as long as you can wobble it to the dealership

Try small shops. As they might sit empty without doing any other work and are willing to give a decent deal.

I used to go Greater Vancouver Tire and Auto Service right on Queensborough when I lived there. And their price was shockingly low compared to chains.

It's good that they're promoting that mentality for non drivers, because it doesn't exist all over the world. Not just oblivious drivers, which are everywhere, but the mentality of "I have the right of way, meaning if someone jay walks in front of me, I have the right to run them over".

Instead of slowing down, or slowing down and honking, they just wait to see if people/animals can get out of the way before they get there at full speed. Right in front of my house there have been deaths, including dogs and children, the latter because the crosswalk was uncontrolled for a long time, and the speed limits here are insane.

Yeah that's what I'm getting at... But it's different in different countries. The first time I did a road trip in China, I was absolutely blown away by the carelessness of pedestrians on the freeway. I think back then a lot of them were used to city traffic, but had no idea how to gauge the speed cars are moving on the freeway. I have seen many close calls and a few accidents.

Throughout Asia you'd never just take the crosswalk when traffic is approaching, unless there's a red light (and even then you should wait to make sure they stop). Even bus drivers and police cars will just blow through crosswalks with people waiting to cross. Crosswalks are merely suggestions of where you can cross when there's no traffic. In BC, those drivers would get tickets every time.

Not sure about the rules in Japan, but the drivers definitely will stop for pedestrians.

I thought the ad was total bullshit and Richmond RCMP isn't the first police department to produce videos like this where the law abiding person is considered equally at fault for something that's entirely the fault of the driver. This ad was a victim blaming ad - the earphones and the hoodie were the equivalent of telling a rape victim they were asking for it because they wore sexy clothes.

Should pedestrians pay attention to their surroundings because drivers are sometimes idiots? Of course but they won't produce an ad showing a pedestrian paying attention and yielding to idiot drivers. The only way the ad here works is to victim blame.

The ad that should have been produced is the inattentive driver killing a pedestrian and doing hard time not the ad that blamed the pedestrian for the driver's behaviour.

The point of these ads is not to place any blame at the pedestrian.

The point of these ads is to say "hey, we don't live in a perfect world, drivers are going to fuck up from time to time, you can help improve your own safety as a pedestrian by being more aware of your surroundings"

It's not a difficult concept.

68style

I'm 47 pal but if you're stereotyping that Gen Z/Millenials think that cars and drivers don't come first and that roads are to be shared then go ahead and call me one.

As a driver the stakes are higher for me when I make a mistake compared to being a cyclist or pedestrian and therefore a greater responsibility lies with me to be attentive and considerate. That video tries to absolve me of what would be 100% my fault.

Should pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers all pay attention because mistakes will happen? Of course? You can run an education campaign that doesn't victim blame which is what this ad does - it places equal onus on both driver and pedestrian when one is following the rules and one isn't. They could have easily made a video showing an honest mistake by the driver or of a pedestrian jaywalking at the wrong place to show the consequences of not paying attention.

K, but I do think your opinion is in the minority and your sensitivities are a little too high ... which is fine. This is what a forum is for, different opinions.

I interpreted the video exactly as Great68 summarized.

I think the majority is dead wrong on this because we've been conditioned to treat the car/driver as more important than cyclists and pedestrians. We've made jaywalking illegal b/c of the auto lobby, we've pushed people and bikes off the road (it used to be shared), we've constructed roads to specifically make moving by car faster but we've made it worse for pedestrians and cyclists and when pedestrians and cyclists push back by asking for wider sidewalks and dedicated spaces we scream bloody murder.

Those shared spaces, wider sidewalks, dedicated bike lanes (as needed) are the things that lead to better health, better neighbourhoods, less accidents, healthier businesses etc. We've created so many poorly planned neighbourhoods because of cars - it's crazy how we just handed away so much livability just for cars (~25% of land is used in a city for PARKING SPACES)

What the Richmond RCMP did in that video has been what police departments have been doing for years - they are not the first to be so tone deaf by placing the motorist at the top of the pyramid. The same for the media - when they write headlines related to pedestrians and cyclists getting killed by cars it's always described in a passive voice and as an "accident" in the same way they say "officer involved shooting" when a cop shoots someone (No man, the cop shot someone).

I walk, cycle and drive - and when I walk or cycle I know I have less rights and will be treated worse than if I drive. We don't need the cops to make videos reminding everyone of that.

I love cars and I will never give them up but I know how privileged we are as motorists - we treat cyclists and pedestrians like shit and we've been brainwashed by society about it.

You're making it way too personal. It's not "us vs them"... If a person walks into a car, it's no big deal. If a car drives into a person, it kind of is. So be careful out there.

Try the new place at the Parker Place food court. $13 for baked pork chop rice, or the 2 other baked rice/spaghetti options, and includes an excellent HK milk tea. They are all legit good. The only problem is -- the baked stuff can't be ordered until 11:30am, and they bake it fresh on order, so it's a minimum 20 min wait. One Saturday I waited a whole whopping 45min+ from shortly after 1pm until some time ~1:50pm because they were swamped. FailFish They told me at the time of ordering that it would be at least a 30 min wait, and I was not blind to the sea of people waiting around for their food, so I am not blaming the restaurant at all.

I haven't had baked pork chop rice at Mambo in a very long time, even though I regularly eat there every now and then. But the one at this 正斗茶記 in Parker Place, it is very, very good. I'd give the rice + sauce a solid 9/10, and they are not stingy with the beaten egg mixture on the rice. The pork chop itself I'd only give a 7 to 8 out of 10, since sometimes they are a bit on the fatty side for my likings.

The HK milk tea at Mambo tastes better, but it is also much smaller. The one at the Parker Place place is not bad at all, and the portion is larger.

Come try the new place out next time you're here! Be prepared for the wait though...

The place at Parker is called One Cafe.

I'm not suggesting I'm a Baked Porkchop Fried Rice afficianado, but I am picky AF when it comes to it. I personally prefer the one at Mambo though One is easily second amongst all the food court stalls and cha chaan tengs here. Their baked curry chicken rice is dope.

I'm not an aficionado of anything, but I love baked pork chops. I've had it at probably 50 different places here, and maybe 5 or 10 in the Vancouver area. Favourite in Canada (and actually the first place I ever tried it) was Kam Do

The thing about it here is, most new restaurants try to make it too 'fancy' with more tangy tomato sauce (almost like a pasta sauce) and stuff like that.

The Canadian places I used to visit took the 70's and 80's style and stuck with that, so the sauce would be that old school tomato based, but not pasta sauce-ish. No lame ingredients like olives. And of course the portions are much bigger there. So overall, I think if you pick a random place you'll probably get better baked pork chop over there

There's still places that do it that way here of course. Including OG restaurants that have been there since the 70's. And even ones that pre-date that. I had one at a 70's or 80's place in Sai Ying Pun a few weeks ago, and it was fully old school, including using breaded deep fried cutlet. It was pretty good, nice large size, but the cutlet batter was meh. Too thick

Current favourite place here is Yuen Long Bistro with locations throughout the city. Classic style sauce (so it's kind of brown, greasy and not too tomato-y) with nice thick pork chops and just onions and tomatoes, and some pineapple chunks. If they deep fried them it would be perfect! Their other pork chop dishes are good too.

They call it YL Bistro but there isn't one in YL?!:rukidding:

But I agree that the Pork Chop on Rice is generally better in Vancouver - mostly because the pork on average tastes cleaner and most places batter them.

Great, now I'm craving a pork chop on rice for dinner.

New Cha chan tengs have popped up all over the city, mostly pre 2019, aimed at tourists from China looking for authentic Hong Kong style restaurants. They are generally styled after Tsui Wah, an old chain that became popular with tourists (and sold to a Chinese company), and I think they even have locations in China.

Quality of these new places range by a LOT, but this is one of the better ones, IMO.

Like most HK things, the essence seems to have moved to Vancouver and it's actually better here because they keep doing it the same way. If there did Michelin Stars on peasant stuff Vancouver would have a lot of stars.

Maxim's in Chinatown does things the old 70's way and shits great. We go there with the kids every few weeks and wife and I have been enjoying it lots. Good portions, great bisques, decent prices. And now that Chinatown is dead, always parking as well.

Would you visit places like HK Maxim's or Fairwood or Coral? Those places seem to keep things the old fashioned way?

Their curry is good but that's it.

Their older locations are better too.. The original is in San Po Kong, older TST locations, Prince Edward IIRC. The newer ones are more hit and miss. These ones could very well be all gone now though.

One of the Tsui Wah founders started Hong Lin in the 90's and they are better overall IMO. GREAT bakery. They make an interesting baked curry, and possibly invented it. I can't remember their baked pork chop, so it's probably not great (for my preferences anyway). They used to have several locations but are now down to one in Prince Edward.

I generally don't go to fast food places like Maxims, etc. But Cafe de Coral actually has a decent baked pork chop. Good for takeout when you don't feel like cooking

Fairwood's is AWFUL. Maxims was ok last time I tried it.

Like I said above, the curry at Tsui Wah is pretty good, at least at the older locations. Especially the pork cutlet, which is huge, freshly deep fried so quite good. Not sure if the China locations are the same though

Even after upsizing the (hot) HK milk tea at Mambo, it is still too small.

But damn their milk tea is good.

Supposedly this other new-ish stall in Presidential Plaza food court also has very good HK milk tea. They brew it using old skool clay pots, and everyone I know that has tried the place says it is fantastic. But the line up there is even worse than One Cafe in Parker -- a 45 min line up seems pretty normal there, and menu selection for food seems a bit limited and simple. So I am not going to line up there.

That whole thing pisses me off so much. I've been in car accidents where there's absolutely nothing I could have done (I was parked) and that is fkd up. And the amount of rehab I legitimately had to do was quite significant (chiro 3x, active rehab 5x, IMS 3x per week)

This is literally a life changing incident for the victim and its gonna be so much more difficult to have to endure (assuming they survive).

Meanwhile, ICBC is gonna be like here's 5K and a voucher to some therapy.

Went to McDonalds yesterday morning for the 'ol Sausage 'n Egg combo w/ double hashbrown and it came out to $13.29 USD = $18.36 CAD. WHAT!!

https://i.imgur.com/kDltlJWl.png

The extra hashbrown alone came out to $3.19+tax!

Grumble grumble... back when I used to work at McDonalds, there was a button for 2 hashbrowns, and it definitely wasn't $3...

Anyway, I'd rather have the Lido satay beef noodle, good lord. For my $18 at least I'm getting some wok hei.

Lol had some shock a couple days ago I had to work downtown for the day due to a meeting and went to Jinya because it was the closest. Ordered the Tonkotsu Original with no extras after 18% tip it was $29 for a bowl of noodles fuck me.

There was some huge party last night that went on until 4am. I thought it was a neighbourhood house, but no it was across the FUCKING RIVER in RICHMOND. I live in Fraserview 4 blocks up from Marine Drive and I could hear it in my house.

What. The. Flying. Fuck. :seriously::fulloffuck::ohgodwhy:

It doesn't seem hard to track down where such an insane level of noise could be coming from.

Just driving around, you'd be able to converge on it. You'd just have to be sufficiently bored, and probably the RCMP is not that bored.

I have no idea why, but I do find around Halloween a much longer leash is given for some reason. I'm probably one of those weirdos with really sensitive hearing as well where I can pick up a lot of things other's cannot.

I think probably also because no one could pinpoint where exactly it was coming from so nothing was done or could be done.

I would have went to look for it, but I have two kids and they were taking turns crying. I believe they could probably hear it and were bothered by it. A sound machine only covers so much.

-might be a quieter Halloween night in Surrey after this RCMP seizure of illegal fireworks: LUL

https://vancouver.citynews.ca/2023/10/31/surrey-fireworks-seizure/

Mounties in Surrey seized $100,000 worth of illegal fireworks from a single business just before Halloween, according to the city.

In a statement Monday, officials say bylaw officers identified that pyrotechnics were being sold at the particular location after they “conducted online and social media searches for sellers of fireworks in Surrey.”

When officers arrived at the business, they reportedly “observed several shelves” stocked. The fireworks were seized by the RCMP, and “municipal tickets” were issued to the employer and two employees.

The city notes fireworks are not allowed to be sold or discharged without a valid permit from the local fire department, as well as a Federal Fireworks Operator Certification.

Anyone found in contravention of the rules could face fines of up to $5,000 in addition to licence suspensions. It’s not clear how much the business owner in this specific incident was penalized.

“It took four pick-up trucks and a minivan to transport the illegal items found at this single location,” said Mayor Brenda Locke.

Tons of very inconsiderate or ignorant people on the road. Funny enough the best time to drive I find is the morning commute, where everyone has a purpose and knows where they are going and there's less retarded shit going on and they are surprisingly courteous about not getting into other people's ways because everyone needs to work. It's busy in the morning but it flows.

Having to deal with picking up my eldest at Elementary school for years now and dealing with parking in a residential street along with all the other parents the 2 things that bug the shit out of me are parents who show up late then just double park causing a backup with other people trying to come and go like I don't give a shit your fault for showing up late, go park your ass down the block and walk to grab your kid.

Second are cars who when leaving do a 3 point turn when there are cars coming and going everywhere like fuck off either park the direction you wanted to leave in the first place or if that wasn't an option you either wait for it to be clear or detour.

Taylor Swift adding 3 shows to Vancouver.

Taylor Swift has added dates to the Canadian leg of her blockbuster Eras Tour – scheduling three shows in Vancouver.

The pop star will be playing BC Place on Dec. 6, 7, and 8, 2024.

“We couldn’t be more excited to be a part of bringing Taylor Swift, The Eras Tour, to Vancouver, giving fans the experience of a lifetime,” said Terrie Tweddle, spokesperson for Rogers Communications Inc., which is presenting the tour.

I have really badly cracked fingers on my left hand............... I'm left handed :ifyouknow:

I usually put on "Helping Hands," and put blue gloves on. This time, I used the white Kirkland ones I had at home. Damn. In less than two hours, my gloves were like yellow and rusty in colour. Shows you how filthy door knobs and items are at places like Trader Joe's and Costco. Blue gloves don't show too much, but the white ones................... damn.

Yesterday, I had gloves on a Grand Villa Casino. One skanky middle aged woman yells, "What's with the gloves?" I put my hands up and do the pull down motion........ "wouldn't you like to know......." Security guys are cracking up behind the desk.

Security guards know me well. Every time they ask me to lower my mask and look into the camera, I do the Gene Simmons tongue wag, except much faster........... yes, ladies, I can - that fast and hard. Anyway, last week this redneck says to me why the mask? I yell back at him, "That's a 10-4 there, Rubber Duckie, We got ourselves a................ CONVY!!!!!! FREEDOM!!!!!!!" Security guards came running. Word was, this guy is known to be a bit of a rabble rouser.

Don't you ever think I'm one of those lay down and apologize, whimpy old asians. FUCK YOU, Redneck!!

Americans are generally more 'outgoing' than Canadians - both positively (striking up random conversations) and negatively (calling people out, starting shit). But yeah in Asia, especially more populated cities, it's waaaaaay below Canada.

I found this to be very true in NYC, the people there have absolutely 0 filter. It was beautiful and disgusting in the same time.

The absolute worst case I saw, this was some shit straight out of a movie....

I'm waiting at the subway station for a train, a few people around, maybe 20 on entire platform. There's an average looking chick to my left.
The train rolls up, dude gets off, he makes eye contact with this chick, and the very first thing out of his mouth was "daaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyymmmm gurl you the ugliest looking thing I've seen all day, nuuuuuu uuuuuuuhhh, DAHM" and proceeds to keep walking out of the station

I'm just standing there absolutely mind blown with my jaw on the floor, I wasn't sure if they were friends fucking with each other, or what.

Then the chick started balling crying her eyes out, yeah they weren't friends.

This kind of shit would happen on the regular, good, bad, almost daily on my commute. For some reason I only experienced it in NYC, everywhere else in the states was pretty vanilla in comparison

I'm always blown away how friendly and talkative Americans are whenever I visit the US or running into them at places abroad.

It's such a stark contrast to how people engage each other in Vancouver.

EDIT: Also had to add, never in my life did I get so much free shit on a trip in recent memory.

1. One night sitting at a rum bar in LA, bartender would periodically serve me up random rums to try from various countries, even made me a few free Mai-Tais and Old Fashions, just because. These aren't cheap drinks.
2. Went to another bar, some guy was selling tacos, only accepted cash and Venmo/Cash-App. I only had a enough cash on me for one order of tacos (was trying to grab two orders), he gave me the second order for free ($20 worth of tacos). Ended up grabbing him some shots as a thank you.
3. Went to a night market in Palm Springs, most vendors accepted card, GF wanted some Arancini so we went to a booth expecting they'd accept card. Lady at the counter says they don't take card, only cash, or those damn apps we Canadians don't have. We went damn, nevermind then, she gave us the order anyways, once again, just cause. I couldn't leave it like that so we drove to a bank after the market to grab some cash and came back and paid her.

It's little things like that happening in the span of a few days which NEVER occur here in Vancouver.

I think like 75% of that is the vibe you put off when you're on vacation. You're going to appear very different to strangers when you're relaxed and having a mellow time as opposed to a quick dinner out on a work night. I've definitely had some pretty good interactions with strangers here when I'm looking for it.

I’ll give my wife some credit she’s actually made some new friends from completely random encounters here in Vancouver who she now regularly hangs out with whereas I would almost never engage with strangers lol.. I think partly that’s a guy thing as well

People she’s met at clothing sales in passing and stuff like that they kinda struck it off, exchanged instagrams or whatever and now hang out. I feel like as people are kind of stuck in these shrinking friend groups over time, milenials and others are now looking for friendships in unlikely places outside of work etc.

Back to the states thing, we met a guy at the bar waiting for our flight at LAX who, to my fault, I always think someone who tries to engage in a convo randomly is kind of a weirdo etc. (Vancouver bias maybe) but we start chatting and the guy is super cool, we share a bunch of travel stories and eventually exchange instagrams etc. just a fun convo for 45 minutes or so waiting for our flight

I think generally (and maybe unsurprisingly to you guys lol) I think I come off as an unapproachable person as I’ve generally got a kind of resting bitch face etc. I’ve never in my life been one to just smile and have some shit eating grin on my face, but I’m not opposed to having a conversation. I’d almost never be the type of person to initiate it though

People here hate being the ones to break the ice. I see it all the time, even at a wedding or something people just talk with their spouse until someone at the table starts asking questions (or everyone just gets drunk and loose) and suddenly people are happy to start talking.

Even on vacation you can tell the couples that are from Van at the resort pool cause they keep to themselves until some dude from Texas starts talking to them and then they are happy to open up a bit.

Americans are generally more 'outgoing' than Canadians - both positively (striking up random conversations) and negatively (calling people out, starting shit). But yeah in Asia, especially more populated cities, it's waaaaaay below Canada.I think I've had my best random stranger conversations in America than in Vancouver.

On one trip to Portland, I asked every person I interacted with why they all drive Subarus. No one had a real answer but it made interesting conversation. I also got hit on by a chick at the gas station LMAO.

On one of our Ridge trips, some dude did a double take in a parking lot and was like YOU HAVE A BEAR ON YOUR LICENSE PLATE. I've also gotten conversations about the Type R and if it's stock. The best ones are when you're driving by and kids are like WOAH THERE'S 3 OF THEM!! I've also had positive experiences chatting with random townspeople in all the small towns I've been to near Ridge.

At Formula D, in buttfuck nowhere hicktown WA state with no Asians in sight, I had the best time hanging out with these two dudes and their gfs. Just cracking jokes and talking about life. These are people I wouldn't normally consider to even talk to. Well I also had great conversation about the horrible service at the Burger King lol. There was also two photographer dudes and one of the drift team owners that randomly joined in conversation. My friends and I had late dinner at a pub in Bellevue - also great conversation with random people there.

Even in Nelson, the people there were so open to conversation. Great conversation to be had with (hot) waitresses, random ppl on the street and MILFs from Revelstoke.

On a side note, white privilege is very prevalent and you don't really see it that much unless leave Vancouver. While most of my experiences in small towns have been great, we have also been called racial slurs (HEWO CHING CHONG while ppl drive by) or just felt the racial tension when it's clear we don't "belong" there. In other instances, it just feels unsafe because of the previous mentioned. However, I found that if we have a white friend with us, they'll be completely oblivious to this. One case of this is after FD, we wanted to eat closer to the border but the white friend wanted to eat in buttfuck nowhere. He couldn't see the discomfort and slight racial tension. On my Nelson trip, I was uncomfortable with not knowing where I was driving to (in these small towns), but these two white guys in our group were very open in conversation with everybody. It was eye-opening to see the norms of (Asian) Vancouver folks vs (white) people who grew up outside of Vancouver.

To be honest, I didn't think much about white privilege and racism related topics until after exploring places outside of Vancouver and especially after 2020.

In Vancouver, after a conference ended at night, I needed directions to a SkyTrain station. Got directions from a lady headed in the same direction and chatted for a bit but now that I'm older - I'm pretty sure she was caught off guard/thought that it was creepy. I was 16 or smt at the time tho so like ??

Don't forget to set your clocks back and hour. spring forward, fall back. Get the hour back we lost in the spring.

Technically Sunday at 2:00 am. Gives people Sunday to get their shit together before work week begins. Not that work week means anything to a lot of people.

I think I'm the same. I never thought about it much til I was on a trip and I realized that while we were there a fair number of people struck up conversations with my friend but not a single person did with me. Heck half of them just straight up ignored me, and I think I'm pretty socially awkward so it was like alright I guess I'll just stop talking then.

But when I'm working at customer sites people will chat with me sometimes. I guess I'm more approachable with safety glasses and a beard net obscuring my face. That's probably a bad thing lol.

I think that problem permeates the culture in this city and results in people that are even from here adopting those same characteristics.

The funny thing is that when I moved to Toronto after university, I was shocked by not just how ethnically and culturally diverse the city is, but how readily these people of different backgrounds would interact and form groups of friends. And the concept of "being Canadian" seemed so much moreso at the forefront of conversation and culture there. An upbeat combination of "this who we are", "this is where we each came from", and "this is what we can be together", full of curiosity and pride and respect.

So I don't even think it's a Canadian thing. And I think you're right that it's not the amount of immigration per se, but the norms surrounding how immigrants are integrating with society, and in turn influencing the folks around them.

This ^ + high cost of living which causes everyone to revert back to the immigration mentality of only fending for yourselves. Which sucks.

I think the difference is that for places like Palm Spring... most people are there to have a good time. It doesn't matter whether you are a millionaire or a broke college student, the reason you are there are the same.

Here in Vancouver, everyone is so uptight about everything and, yet, ironically, being so pretentious about everything at the same time.

I have acquaintances who I know they aren't financially comfortable. Between mortgage, cars and family, they just don't have much room given their jobs. And yet they are pushing their kid so hard in order to get him into an elite private school.

:fuckthatshit: I was really confused. So I asked... is going to this school and all these lessons what your kid want/like to do? They say... honestly, his kid only really like baseball, but it's their only chance of trying to "move up" the social hierarchy. And that their children's success is their success.

I don't understand. And on the other hand, I also have some old-money caucasian friends who don't give a rat ass about how their kids do. Their kids are the only one at school who don't take any afterschool class. Well, they do a lot of rowing and biking, but more like a hobby than any particular extra-curricular activity. And I also know for a fact that they never worry about money. The other day they came over for dinner "oh, you got a new Tesla". I told him all about it and he was like "oh... really interesting".

Next thing I know, he got a new Model S Plaid.

So, I don't know... the gap in wealth and cost of living in YVR has pushed the society into this fucked up situation and that to be totally honest, I don't see a real solution and it's really affecting the city as a whole.

On a side note, his wife, Donna Faye Madhosingh, is a very well known music educator. When I first met her via Chandra, I was taken back by his wife's good looks. She was very pretty. And, she was very intelligent. I saw her again at UBC when she was lecturing/guest speaker at some music symposium sponsored by the music education department of UBC.

Don't waste your money on glass containers. They are a pita to store and usually the lids aren't dishwasher safe.

Here's a trick I got after I learned doing meal prep from a pro.

Go to a packaging supply store, get microwavable containers like this:

https://lppackaging.ca/collections/containers/products/translucent-deli-containers

They come in different sizes, stack nicely on top of each other and use SAME SIZE lids. Fully transparent so you can see what's in there. They are microwave/dishwasher safe and if it gets to a point where it's no longer in shape, toss it in the recycle bin.

Costs few dimes each and SOOOO much neater. I got a few pack of them from a friend who has a resto 2yrs back. I'm not even half way through.

The only major difference would be glass containers might lock better. But nothing a rubber band wouldn't fix for me.

That's the first thing I thought about when my meal prep buddy taught me how he did it. But given the hippie liberal as he was, he got everything figured out.

The plastic used in the container I listed (can't remember which type), but when I was reading about it, it was highly recyclable because it was easy to break it down.

Should you be more environmentally conscious, one could also choose to buy pretty much the same containers, but made out of recycled plastics instead of new.

Slightly more expensive. Works the same, and way more environmentally friendly than those plastics used as lids on glass containers because it's hard to break them down (takes more procecees, hence more energy).

Because ultimately, it's not about that it's made out of plastic, but rather whether or not it could be properly recycled.

And you are not throwing away after one use. It just gets washed and re-used. You only recycle them when they reach their limit. Which is quite long. I'd say I've only recycled about 10 of them. Out of the 100 or so I've used.

The glass ones?

Glasslock is the brand at Costco i think.

I've only had issues with 3 pieces over two sets I've used during the last 10 years.

One container, the glass lip broke and the plastic tab won't lock anymore, it would have been still usable if it wasn't for the sharp glass edge, as the other 3 tabs would still lock.

Two lids, the plastic tab fell off at the hinge from wear and tear. One's still usable as the tabs fell off on opposite sides.

The asian side of me won't let me buy "disposable" plastic containers. I just wash and reuse take out containers. It'll be a sad day when those those finally get banned. I'll be ok for years though, I'm still not out of old plastic shopping bags that I'm using for garbage can liners.

I had a set of the glasslock ones and the plastic on the lids were so brittle pretty much every peice of mine fell apart, all handwashed. Which led me to the oxo ones.

The oxo ones are good for not leaking liquids, and has a thicker gasket. But yeah the glass lips do chip a bit.
