Nevermind the drivers, not all of them obviously but quite a few... I am often waiting at places and they just barge up to the front with their bag open yelling out their order number and the staff always have to gravitate toward them.

I also have the experience quite often of trying to order something and the terminal for an order app starts dinging away and their attention is drawn away from me to check what's on that and then back to me again.

Do the delivery apps still make you decide the tip% before the food even arrives? That's some serious intimidation if it's still the case (I believe it was with some of them).

Yes but you can change the tip amount up to a certain time after the food had arrived. I know there have been stories from the driver side saying they saw an order with a nice tip then after the delivered they changed it to a shitty ass tip or none at all.

This can be changed by taking ownership of the GoogleMyBusiness listing though. I wonder how good of an effort Uber takes into GMB management

Not every restaurant owner is going to be tech savvy enough to figure that out though.

Ordered Uber Eats when they were running promotions and the driver went on a giant detour with my meal. Food arrived cold even though the restaurant was less than 10 mins away, and I was able to remove his tip. What I didn't expect was Uber (or likely the restaurant) reimbursing me for the meal though.

IMO, delivery apps will be a hit or miss experience since it's driver dependent, but they're here to stay. Minimum wage isn't all that minimal anymore. So operators probably feel the pinch and need to maximize the usage of their staff even though it cuts their margins. And let's not forget about fuel and time cost. I've used delivery apps for family picnics and what not and the convenience is sometimes worth the extra cost.

I've never had an issue getting my money back if the food arrives cold or if there was something wrong with the order. Not sure who actually takes the hit when that happens

When there are promotions it's cheaper or very close to the same price than it would be for me to order from the restaurant directly and pick it up myself

All this talk of food apps had me curious if I had an offer sitting there since I haven’t ordered delivery in over a year or so. Checked skip at like 10PM and yep, $8 off of McD’s so I got all the kids a happy meal (Pokémon cards are out), let the boy stay up late for his chicken nuggies and customized myself a McDouble. They need a “like a mac” button btw..

First time having McDs in quite a while.. ‘twas a glorious late night munch sesh with the kids :lol

I hope it's not the case, but I would assume the restaurant gets dinged when people request their money back. Shitty deal since its the delivery driver and the app's fault of setting the route and not at all the fault of the restaurant.

Yeah that would be ridiculous because we've had situations where we saw the food sitting on someone's doorstep 8 houses over a couple of hours later when going for a walk lol

All this talk about food delivery apps who uses grocery delivery apps like Instacart lol. Man I haven't stepped foot into a Costco in over a year since I started using it.

Unlike food delivery apps like uber, door dash etc it isn't nearly as expensive not even close in my experience anyway. With food apps you're paying in some crazy pretty insane markups on the actual product and then a shit ton of extra fees on top.

With instcart the main difference lies in the markup of the product. I haven't looked at every single order I've ever done but I have found that sometimes the price on instacart was even lower than if I ordered it on costco.ca or if it was marked up the difference was extremely minimal.

Example:

Tide original
Coscto.ca = $27.49 after $5.50 off
Instacart = $24.09 after $$5.50 off

Zip Lock Med size bags
Coscto.ca = $15.49 after $3.50 off
Instacart = $14.59 after $3.50 off

I use it so much so that I got a membership for $99 a year (cheaper than an uber pass or door dash pass) and again so far great service, barely even paying more in some instances compared to going yourself even factoring in fees and tip.

Here's an example of a recent order. Service fee was basically nothing but sure tip and fee was $16. I may or may not have even paid any markup on the actual items. Compared to ordering food that's a steal on a $100+ order. You could easily order 2 or 3 items on a food app and already pay way more than $16.

Instacart = $14.59 after $3.50 off
Costco in-store = $12.99 after $3.50 off

Costco.ca is marked up vs. in-store at Costco already since shipping is built into the cost on the .ca website.

So yes Instacart may be a few bucks cheaper than the website, but it may very well be marked up slightly on top of the in-store price.

EDIT: added zip lock bag price.
EDIT: added tide original price.

This is exactly it. If you shop in-store at Costco, the majority of items will be cheaper than what you see online. When you factor in $3 to $5 on each bulk item at Costco, it can really add up over the year.

For some reason, I've been overcharged at the Save-on-foods near my place twice in the past 3 weeks. First time the cashier gave me $4 off on-top of the correct price when I told them about the incorrect pricing when I bought burgers 3 weeks ago.

Today I bought an item in store where the label showed $19.99 but I was charged $29.99. I showed them no where on the aisle price tags show $29.99, the cashier refunded me the over-charged difference upon confirmation.

I recall if my understanding is correct, if an item is under $10, you get it for free if you spot the pricing error. If it's over $10, they have to give you the lower price (correct price) and offer $10 reduction?

Canadian Scanner Price Accuracy Code (Formerly known as SCOP). You need to mention SCOP and also the retailer must be participating in it to honour it, in your case Save-on-foods does.

https://www.simplyfrugal.ca/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/scanner-price-sticker-2019.png

When I went to Loblaws and bought two sticks of butter on sale, they rang up as full price and I showed her the sale sign and mentioned SCOP, so she gave me the first one free and I paid the sale price on the second stick of butter.

Since learning about this years ago, I always automatically place the most expensive item im purchasing first to be scanned to maximize discount ($10 max)
I'm actually surprised at how many times per year this situation occurs.

They do.

https://www.retailcouncil.org/scanner-price-accuracy-code/
1.1 On a claim being presented by the customer, where the scanned price of a product at checkout is higher than the price displayed in the store or than advertised by the store, the lower price will be honoured; and

(a) if the displayed price of the product is $10 or less, the retailer will give the product to the customer free of charge; or
(b) if the displayed price of the product is higher than $10, the retailer will give the customer a discount of $10 off the lowest advertised price.

On the other hand, retailers have caught on. One time I discovered a discrepancy and informed the cashier while she was scanning my items. She corrected the price on the spot and just like magic, the mistake never took place because the proper way was to knowingly let the purchase go through and report to CSR. :yuno:

Then there's one time, I saw a lady with a giant cart of products at the CSR counter. Apparently she's known to the store, and on a weekly basis, she would go there to pick up incorrectly priced items to abuse the rules. CSR had to call their manager on the ruling and I did not stick around for the final verdict. But you have to admire her commitment. :awwyeah:

Dumb question, but how do I report it? Do I have to call the non-emergency police or can I upload it somewhere online with a video?

It was basically my tenant's mail. I checked the mail box earlier so I know what was left behind, including a small amazon package. He probably saw it sticking out a bit out of the mail box and then decide to take all the envelopes too. What a guy...

I just write "MOVED" and throw them back into the Canada Post drop boxes. But in the past when I was lazy, I have also written "MOVED" on the mail and just put it back into my mailbox with those envelopes sticking out half way so it can be noticed. The mailman seemed to have collected them like that as well.

I’m about as pro-meat as you can get. I often have this conversation with friends etc. as to what your “favourite food” would be in terms of a single item for a last meal type thing etc. mine would almost certainly be a slab of meat, a super fatty rib eye etc.

However I’ve long since given up any preconceptions about vegetarian, vegan dishes etc. how can you not eat a simple peice of fruit and be blown away by the flavour. I’ve had some pineapple and peaches that were so fucking amazing I had to find people to give them to share the experience lol. A basic peach is like bordering on orgasmic so how can you ever poo poo any sort of dish where an excellent chef has currated amazing, fresh, ingredients into something mind blowing regardless of the contents.

I think so many people have a simpletons pallete and would rather take pictures of some foo foo presentation that tastes like a Big Mac over relatively simple presentation where the ingredients were the main focus

Edit* imo the definition of this form over function dining are Chinese wedding banquets. Shark fin soup and all the other shit. Those meals are fucking trashhhh lol but people think because they spent money on it it’s good? I’ve been to 4-5 for kids birthdays, weddings, etc. the meals are fucking embarrassing lol

This 100x. We go there on the way up, and the way back home, by far my favorite restaurant in the Okanagan.

We just went there again a few weeks ago, had that Zucchini dish that Honda posted, it was honestly amazing. A mix of sweetness and salty butter in the bread, mixed with the heartiness of the vegetables. Amazing combination. They also had a beet dish which was great. If you try lunch there, get the burger, all locally sourced and delicious.

Lebanese/Syrian food is also excellent for Veg. But hard to say how strict they are with cross-contamination since they love their kebabs too.

Anyone know of any good South Indian restaurants that are not Dosa restaurants? Used to go the Chutney Villa but they seem to have changed hands a few times and gone downhill and now renamed to something else. The authentic stuff is delicious and completely different from other (north) Indian food you'd normally get here in Vancouver.

It's because the farming regulations are much more stringent in NZ and Aus, and the weather is more conducive to year round farming, and the practices that support that type of open field farming. It really just comes down to fertile farmland/supply.

StylinRed
08-23-2022, 08:53 PM
They're tiny, so tiny 1/5th the size of BC, the same climate as BC, and 12000 kms away, export worldwide, and still far cheaper than locally raised though X.X

Same climate as the lower mainland sure, but BC, no. I work very closely with a lot of farmers, have visited many beef suppliers, and honestly, I wish they were making more money. You're right about the feedlot shit farmers fucking us though. Garbage beef, garbage practices, garbage people.
Big part of that is the standards for food here are embarrassing. Lol at the Alberta quality beef bullshit that places like Cargill speak of. Fuck them so much.
It doesn't help that so much of our best farmland has become condos over the past 40 years.

Dougie out here playing sim city with Surrey tax dollars. This won't happen, at least I wouldn't think so but what a clown. Why would anyone build a stadium without a dedicated team to play in it? lol, just for hosting shit? What a fucking idiot.

https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/surrey-mayor-mccallum-build-60k-sports-stadium?fbclid=IwAR2HA2YoST1pCRJ1860q_giGq3Oh5jCQi 4UkfgAsRId216HF8vJ7puSyRdQ

Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum not only wants to build a brand new stadium in Surrey, but he also wants to build the biggest damn stadium in all of Canada.

He said it with a straight face, so we’ll assume McCallum was serious about an outrageous plan to build a new 60,000-seat stadium for “all sports.”

“Part of our commitments that we’re going to say as part of our Safe Surrey Coalition is we are going to build a 60,000-person arena in Surrey,” McCallum told reporters from Cloverdale at the site of a new sports complex that broke ground today.

“It will be a multi-use arena for all sports. The city is a very big city; it’ll be bigger than Vancouver in four or five years. We need a sports stadium. We’re going to build a sports stadium in the next few years.”

Possibly, I honestly think he's all about creating a legacy for himself at any cost to current and future tax payers, reason why he rammed the Surrey Police transition through.

I'm not opposed to the transition away from the RCMP, Surrey is a huge city and really should have it's own police force but I am opposed to the way he did it.

How does the guy have any support left? Didn't he literally pass a law that he couldn't be investigated right before he was going to get investigated?

He said it would be home to the BC Lions and Canucks. BC Lions said that was the first they ever heard of it. Also, no way Canucks would need a 60,000 stadium. There are enough empty seats as it is.

And this is strictly a Surrey thing. There is no involvement from the Province. He basically just announced whatever he wanted.

I don't know it's a mix for sure. I look at my son and his friends, going into grade 11 probably half of them have jobs. My son has been working since he was 15.

I've talked to the parents of some of the kids he plays football and boxes with, some are like yeah I want my kid to work others are I don't want them to work I want them to enjoy life and concentrate on school.

This argument I don't buy, I think you're creating kids that have very little life experience and are going to have a tougher time later in life interacting with people. People want to work. They just don't want to work shitty jobs anymore.

It's almost like everyone here forgot there's (still) a world-changing pandemic and turned people into shitty customers overnight making an already shitty situation even shittier. It's not just about low paying jobs - the public is shit right now, ergo public facing jobs are shittier than ever.

It's like a rite of passage lol... that's the other kind of strange thing about this stuff. I can't say I wholeheartedly agree with this concept, but someone recently said to me "Why does everyone want a living wage at the barista level? You're not supposed to live at that job, you're supposed to do it for a couple years while upgrading your skills and then move on to something that does pay a living wage"

Obviously there are other factors, but there is some merit to it.

Not to mention the shitshow of mental illness holding our cities hostage. I can't imagine working at a place like Timmys and having to deal with that kind of shit day in and day out.

And it doesn't matter. Just because we had to eat shit doesn't mean our children should have to. I think the issue is becoming people with zero skills have this “I’m better than this!” Attitude

I see it all the time at my employer. People have a pretty sweet gig great benefits, very flexible work/life balance but then the union and other people drill this idea into their peons heads that “this isn’t good enough!!”

Sorry but you only have the skills the company trained you for, you have no education, you’re not all of a sudden going to be making 80-100k a year being an ant at a corporate giant.

also given the financial climate people are hella risk adverse in terms of starting a business etc. (not like any of these people would be capable of it anyways) I’ve known a bunch of people I used to work with who are much younger than I am who got their hands dirty and learned to run machinery, do demo excavation work etc. from my former company, and then started their own company and are absolutely killing it now.

Society norm is go to school, get good grades, so you can get a good job. WTF is a good job anyways? A job that pays well where you sit at a desk and not have to do much work? It is like a waitress/waiter with tips likely makes way more than someone that went to univerity for their arts/science degree LOL. I hate those people that brag about which university they went, or ask "oh, so which university did you go to". I didn't go to university, but we have the same job LOL.

Seems like society frowns down on entry level job, but every job has its purpose that make society complete as a whole. If everyone became doctors because it paid the big bucks, then who is going to serve you a restaurant or supermarket.

The impression I get from kids these days is "it's a waste of time, not worth my time, I'm too good for this job". It's easy to say that kinda shit when they're like freeloading from parents.

I'd agree it doesn't mean you're going to be totally social awkward but given the option of limited interaction with random people and a lot of interaction I think the later is better.

For me it's about taking things I learned that I could have done better at his age and trying to point him in the right direction and keeping his options open as much as possible until he figures out what he wants to do. My parents were never there for me for this for many reasons.

Work experience, great gets to deal with lots of people, learns how to manage a schedule, show up on time for work talk to people ect.

Sports, learns how to work as a team in football and in boxing he learns how to be an individual well understanding discipline.

School, you keep your grades up because you don't know what you want to do. If you want to go to University those doors are all open to you without having to go back to school to bring up your grades.

He's also learning lessons on his own limits, how much he can do realistically without getting overwhelmed. I'm far from a perfect parent, I've made a lot of mistakes in my life but I've learned from a lot of them and I'm trying to keep my son from making similar ones but at the same time letting him explore himself.

Edit: True story, my son dropped gym this year and picked up Biology. I asked him why he did that, he said because he wasn't sure what he wants to do in the future and he's keeping his options open. Even I was like, you sure you want to do that?

TBH if I just finished paying my student loans I'd be a little bit miffed too but most people can't see past their immediate situation and see what can be generally good for society.

Sorry my mistake...It's not debt forgiveness, it's debt relief - up to $10,000 to $20,000 depending on income. Tuition costs in the US are insane though as you probably know with many degrees costing 6 figures.

https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2022/08/24/fact-sheet-president-biden-announces-student-loan-relief-for-borrowers-who-need-it-most/

So this brings another problem in today's polarized society. People hear "debt relief for student loans" and automatically go to "OMG the freeloaders are going to get free stuff from my tax money" because "Biden is destroying America" or something.

I think you have to be VERY careful in how these programs are implemented. I’m not against them, as with anything you’ve got to start somewhere.

However look at CERB, I saw some projection that up to 30% of the claims were fraudulent. Just cutting people cheques and auditing later on never works.

I definitely don't like the "it costs more to prevent it than the money we'd lose" approach......... that doesn't sit well with me since there's no way to account for how much ends up lost.

I actually would prefer they spent more and made sure not even 1 douche was able to brag to friends how they worked the system.

2 to 4 mbps for the entire cell, not per user. In any populated area, you're only going to be able to send sms messages. Forget phone calls unless you're one of a handful of users in that cell.

Go to a private liquor store. They are not effected.

Depends on what product you're buying.

Domestic products which have their own direct distribution channels (IE domestic beers/wines) aren't affected, but Private liquor stores still have to buy the majority of their imported/hard liquors and specialty wines/beers from the LDB warehouse and those products are definitely affected.

Why is everyone's first reaction to being honked at negative? I was driving down Granville earlier and noticed a car with the passenger mirror folded in. As a concerned citizen, I tried getting the driver's attention (middle aged caucasian woman) by waving out my window at her. Had to give a little honk to try and get her attention, her immediate response was the middle finger. And then I start tapping my driver side mirror out the window and pointing at her passenger side mirror which was folded into the car(it was a car that I don't believe had power mirrors). After seeing that, she then waved/said thank you.

Yeah they've got so much to maintain because they've got so much shit. Any US city has a multiple factors of freeway infrastructure that any similar-sized Canadian city would never even dream of.

WSDOT freeways are generally held to high standard, much higher than anything we have in BC or most of Canada save for perhaps Ontario. Other states like Oregon don't seem to be as high-standard, and California has so much old shit I can't imagine they don't have things collapsing left and right.

Their city streets though, I concur, are shitty.

What standards are we talking about? Cause I5 has been total trash as long as I've been alive (46 years) - it's the worst highway in terms of road surface conditions (coarse gravel or poorly maintained concrete or beat up asphalt) and the signage is marginal as are the curbs. The only decent stretch I've driven on (and I've driven down to Sacramento and back) is just south of Bellingham where it's new asphalt. Everything else is earplug city and get ready for a rough ride.

Driving around Seattle today my wife randomly remarks, "Has Seattle always been this trashy?" - it's really sad that pretty much every American city is a trashy cousin to Canada. Poorly maintained infrastructure, housing that's beat up (people can't afford to maintain it), and the whole place smells like dried piss.

It's rough down here (compared to my last trip) - I have never felt unsafe in Seattle in all my years and this week has not been the case.

I was in the University district's food strip and hurried away pretty quick. It was no DTES but I would have figured that something near the university would be clean, safe, and bustling but it was anything but. It was if Westbrook Mall was scummy.

Same goes for downtown near the malls - it all smelled like dried piss and it was just sad seeing some of the folks there. There was a lady panhandling for money for school supplies - her kid was with her. Don't know if it was legit or not but it's believable in the US.

I haven't spent a lot of time in DT Van since COVID and I know it's probably gotten worse too but it didn't seem that bad the last couple times I was down there - just the fucking Canada geese that kept trying to steal my Jollibee in Robson Square.

As far as I can remember, Seattle was always a dirty city. Smelly and filthy. I missed going to the Century 21 World's Fair, but I remember going there shortly afterward. That was probably the last time I could say Seattle was a clean city. Downhill ever since.

The other thing is, the city is always under construction. Never ending. Always building new overpasses and shit, but not taking care of the existing roads.

Speaking of Seattle, anyone been to Pike Place recently? It's been a while and I was thinking of going (depending on what RS member say, lol).

I'm not just talking about the road surface, but the general infrastructure available. Wide shoulders, ramps/overpasses everywhere, long exit/merge lanes, multiple lanes obviously. The reason the surface is so rough is that a lot of stretches still use concrete whereas we use asphalt exclusively for all our highways which gets replaced more often. I-5 is being constantly pounded by cars and trucks 24/7 whereas if you drive on Highway 1 in metro Van in the middle of the night it's practically empty.

Then again I haven't driven down since pre-pandemic so who knows it might have all just crumbled to the ground for all I know. Maybe I'll check it out this weekend..

Yes, there are stretches of I5 where the basic quality of engineering is better - better and longer ramps, and more lanes but those are really exceptions where there's enough space for it. South of Everett all the way down to Olympia and it's a goddamn logging road - it's a bucking bronco that's not just about concrete but a failure to build LEVEL surfaces - my 3 year old thinks we're on a roller coaster in the back. I find the I-5's surface is rough, but the lane markers are far better then HWY 1. A dark night with rain I can actually see the lanes when driving down to Seattle, where as here in Vancouver it can be a total shit show.

Speaking to Seattle though, I don't know if it's just me, but I feel an overwhelming feeling of sadness when driving through downtown Seattle. I can't put my finger on it but the city makes me feel uneasy, not due to homelessness/crime or anything, just the overall look and feel of the city. It's just not a pleasing place, it doesn't flow well structurally, I generally want to GTFO as soon as possible or pass through entirely.

Oddly enough once I get to Portland that feeling goes away completely, maybe because Portland reminds me somewhat of Vancouver?

Can't really generalize like that, different parts of the same highway can have different merge lane lengths due to physical constraints, and the era they were built. Case in point highway 1 built in the 1960s in West Van has crazy short ramps but Highway 1 in Burnaby built in 2012 has good ramps. I can imagine I-5 to be similar but Interstate standards for these things are higher than most BC highways. Highway 1 in its current state within BC especially the Upper Levels and out in the Valley between Abby and Chilliwack would not fly down south.

Got out my sound meter on the way back to see how much louder the I5 concrete is versus good asphalt and at 120kph the concrete around Everett (not the worse there is but not great) I got 70db while on good asphalt near Blaine I got 63db - that's about a 60% diff in noise (I think my sound meter under reports though but it's still apples to apples here). The stuff around downtown Seattle is worse so figure twice as loud which is nuts.

Sure it's "cheaper" to pour concrete over asphalt but that ignores all the external costs - more wear and tear on cars, more accident caused by poor surface conditions, more fatigue for drivers, health problems (more hearing loss, more wear and tear on drivers), etc. It's classic American culture where they just love to pass the costs on to others.

There's pros and cons to both sides.
Concrete is more durable if done correctly, and also more heat resistant, and requires less repairs.

Asphault is easier on cars, and I believe it's actually easier to pour, but it's easier to fuck up (look at all the uneven asphault pours around Vancouver) And it's definitely not a very durable material.

Gonna add a bit to this.

Generally, asphalt on roadworks is done by qualified crews (ie. not uncles in sandals), and the unevenness you see is just an inherent design flaw in asphalt, where it's never fully "hard"; so tires will eventually deform the pavement resulting in unevenness. Asphalt is usually designed with 3~5% voids to begin with to help with freeze/thaw, as well as drainage - but this works against it as well as over time with dynamic loads (ie traffic) it'll deform as mentioned above. However, it's much easier to rip up than concrete, and is cheaper to place than concrete. The only real downside to asphalt placement is that you can't do it when it's raining, nor when it's cold. And there's additional surface prep to ensure longevity, although some municipalities/cities say fuck it and just pave over existing asphalt, which does end up in premature failure. Another benefit is you can pave literally hundreds of kilometers without break, with no issue.

Concrete, is more difficult to place because you need formwork at the edges, and reinforcement, all things that need to be done manually and inspected before pouring concrete. And as you want to open the roads as soon as possible, they'll order high performance concrete, which is expensive. Then you also still need to cure it properly (ie covered, kept wet) for at least a day, up to a week, before you can open them up. It's also highly dependent on the finishing crew how flat of a surface you get. It is much more durable than asphalt with design ages up to 10x that of asphalt, although obviously salting in the winter reduces that significantly, although there is special cements that can be used to make them more durable against salts - but again, that's more $$$. The biggest flaw with concrete is that it's not designed to drain and is slippery as fuck in the rain. Also when pouring roads with concrete you need to segment them to account for expansion/shrinkage which is added construction costs.

Also solely because asphalt is softer than concrete, it's quieter and provides a better ride.

The Bay, Best Buy, Staples, London Drugs, just about anywhere. If you're into Apple laptops, Simply Computing.

Not leather but................... https://shop.walrushome.com/blogs/news/41260036-get-out-of-town?_pos=1&_sid=b50feeac3&_ss=r

I just love shopping at Walrus, but you're looking for leather. They used to carry a lot Bellroy stuff. Really high quality stuff. I think you can order anything from them through Walrus. https://bellroy.com

Can't beat traditional leather, though.

Herschel has a solid range of bags for laptops, just not in leather.

I have a Tumi laptop bag that I picked up from the premium outlets that's perfect for a 13" MacBook plus a few other items. Holds the charger, pack of gum and a few documents. For its purpose it's an excellent bag with lots of pockets and organised storage but not bulky at all - when I travel it fits into my weekend bag just fine. There's a Tumi store at the Richmond outlet - they might have something for you.

Also, what size/type of laptop do you have and what budget did you have in mind?

I've been on the hunt myself recently with similar specifications. While I haven't made my final decision yet, the last thing I want to do is share a $4500 leather bag that makes zero sense to you. Depending on your answers, I may have a few on my shortlist to recommend of which I've seen in person.

Leather has such a large range of quality. How much of a leather snob are you? LV uses shit leathers and Hermes uses slightly better leathers. This guy on tiktok tears apart leathers and explains the difference in construction and materials: https://www.tiktok.com/@tanner.leatherstein?_t=8VQDvU88mT0&_r=1

He also sells leather bags with a decent quality. I haven't purchased one but I like his content.

There's also cow vegetable tan leathers and buff washed leathers, which I honestly have no idea what it means so it's a good thing I'm not in sales at work lol.

Buying *leather* goods is like buying a German vehicle. It's all about spec LOL.

But for a simple answer, Brooks Brothers sucks. I have a Ted Baker bag and I'm not a leather snob. I like it.

I've heard excellent things about the durability of Tumi. Also have heard excellent things about The Cambridge Satchel Co.

Matt & Nat is exclusively vegan leather, not sure if they have messenger bags or laptop sleeves or if it's just purses.

Just wanted to randomly proclaim my excitement over finally being able to upgrade my internet service, thanks to 5G making it here. When I first moved out to this village, it was 8 Mbps DSL only, shortly upgraded to 30 Mbps for the next like 10 years with no sign of it ever getting better. There's fiber down the street at the expensive "villas", but not here in my shanty town.

So I am trying out 5G, which is around 200 Mbps for less than half the price of what I was paying. I was paying like $55 CAD per month for 30 Mbps, now it's $25 for 200 Mbps lol. The possible catch is there's a 200 GB fair use policy, after which speeds are not guaranteed. It's not a hard cap though, and I've had caps like this where it meant literally nothing. I have 30 days to test it out.

I guess it's set up like ADSL where up is capped to allow for more down. This wouldn't be a good service to stream from, but most people rarely upload much from home. I know I don't!

Currently downloading from Steam at 22.4 MB/s instead of 22.4 Mb/s Kreygasm (I'd have to cap it to have bandwidth left over for browsing)

On wireless, particularly on 5G, it takes more radio resources for upload so it's always a challenge for network engineers to determine how they design their networks. You have limited resources and the priority often is to ensure everyone (or at least most people) to attain the best download speeds as best as possible given whatever constraints or circumstances that come their way. Most people download and not upload, so this is why.

Not bragging (but maybe a flex) I got 332Mbps download. Don't ask me about the upload speed. :D

Anyone work for ICBC? Or had to submit a "standard form release" to accept a claim settlement?

The claims specialist handling the case is on vacation and her emergency caseload handler isn't responding

I'm just trying to get that form to submit it before the deadline and before I leave on vacation myself

Called icbc and all they did was issue an internal notice to the person handling the case

So it looks like I'll have to go to the passport center which is right downtown by Canada Place. The last time I was down in that area I don't think there was really anywhere you could park so I'm thinking I'm better off parking somewhere else and taking the Skytrain to downtown? Or is there a parkade somewhere vaguely nearby that isn't $20/hr? I'll be coming from Langley or Burnaby most likely.

An actual piece of good unique content from the DailyShite:

https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/vancouver-chevron-barge

An in depth tour of the Chevron barge gas station in Coal Harbour

When my father owned a commercial fishing vessel, we would go to the Esso floating barge to fill up on gasoline, diesel, oil, kerosene, and water. Shell was my dad's next favourite. I recall maybe five floating barges back in the 50's and 60's. False Creek was full of fishing vessels. The barges were nothing like what that Chevron barge is now.

Anyway, amazing piece of history. Definitely changes, for the better, due to the change in clientele.

Fishing, much like farming, has changed so much over the years. Small independents gone and everything has moved away from the urban areas, making way for pleasure craft and the like. My father retired at the right time. Life as a commercial fisherman was very demanding and harsh, but the benefits of being your own boss and experiencing the sights, sounds and being one with nature was something that could only be described as, priceless. I have such fond memories of the docks below the Burrard and Granville Street Bridges. Paramount, Cassiar, and Celtic Shipyards. Off loading the week's catch on Cash Boats and places like Ballantyne Pier.
