Lol, I’m going in for cataract surgery soon. Everybody over 60 gets cataracts. It gets worse over time. This video cracks me up. It’s a common procedure. I guess, in the US, it costs money. Cataract surgery is covered here in Canada. My cataracts were detected a few years ago. Back then, it was ever so slight. Now it has gotten to the point where my night vision is is being affected. I feel like convection toaster ovens and "air fryers" are functionally the same thing (they blow hot air around to cook food) just in different shapes. You'll never get the same quality of "Frying" as a true deep fryer with oil though, not even close.

A convection toaster over would certainly be more versatile.

Our new stove has an air fryer functionality. It's disappointing tbh. An air fryer oven is just a convection oven with a mesh rack. You can buy an old convection oven, get a mesh rack and achieve the same effect.

And yes, can't beat actual oil, especially when it comes to frying meat.

I also have an Instant pot. Made the best batch of Asian shredded beef to date the other night. Marinaded overnight and then seared hard in the pot before pressure cooking for an hour and 20 mins. Grabbed some butter lettuce and made cups with homemade pickled red onion, used a potato peeler to thinly slice carrot, toasted some sesame seeds and topped with cilantro. The adults add sriracha and the kids pour on probably too much hoisin :lol

So simple yet so delicious.

Oh ya for soups I always boil way more bones/carcasses and aromatics to ever fit into an Instant Pot. Cool the broth overnight, remove the hardened fat that rises and solidifies at the top the next day and end up with a gelatinous amazing base to work with.

Too bad prime rib is so obscenely expensive these days. I’ve only made chicken broths this fall/winter and used to regularly have beef bones in the freezer for stock. That was when I could find it on sale for $7 or $8/lb and stock up though.

Honestly an air fryer is a game changer, we use ours more than any other appliance in the kitchen. My GF wanted one (so did I), so I bought one as one of her gifts for Christmas a year or so ago. Best residual gift I've ever purchased :lol

I recommend the Ninja air fryer, and don't cheap out get the larger quart size.

Of course an air fryer isn't supposed to replace deep frying something, and the reality is you're not supposed to air fry something without oil. You just use less oil, that's all.

I love it even as a pseudo-microwave. We don't even own a microwave any longer, I prefer to warm up food in the air fryer, tastes much better.

I make a lot of my veggies in the air fryer -- Potatoes, sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, it all comes out wicked with some olive oil and seasoning.

The worst part of the insurance is when there is a big enough earthquake there will be so much damage all of the insurance companies will go bankrupt and your insurance might not be covered. Fire and flood insurance is the most important thing in my eyes.

If the damage is so severe that I can’t fix my home for 100k, it’s pretty likely as Murdoc said that you either A) won’t be getting paid out period, or B) it’s going to take years to have your home rebuilt due to the lack of trades etc.

First letter comes up by whichever is shorter [distance/mileage] for set interval (i.e. A/B).
Additional work (numbers) is calculated by time/mileage elapsed.

This isn't the GM/Honda/Acura dynamic maintenance minder that varies when you need your timing belt/oil changes by # of cold starts, how hard you drive it, etc.
You can just go by the manual on mid 2000s MBs

We are starting to see this kind of stuff in the HVAC industry.
Before all equipment was the same, kind of like a carbureted car, easy to fix, no electronics, "everyone" could do it.
Now lots of HVAC shit is 5 boards, 3 of them programmed, one only accessable by laptop software. Some units can only be repaired by OEM, or "trained" OEM staff. = Buy a new unit.

At least with an HVAC unit, there's 20 other competitors, and customers don't care what they have.

An apple iPhone tho...... People bend over backwards for the new 1500$ model that has 2 more megapixels and a built in photo filter app, would not be caught dead with a Samsung. And apple knows this, there is no "competition" for 50% of the market share.

So I'm through my first two winter season hydro bills since installing the heat pump.

My electricity consumption is $338 more than this time last year (and that's not including the $100 energy rebate BC hydro handed out)

By this time last year I would have went through a tank of oil, ~$850.

So $500 less than last year.

What makes it even more amazing, is with my oil furnace I was so cheap that we kept the stat at 16C unoccupied/overnight and 18C home/awake.

With the HP, we keep it at 18C unoccupied/overnight and 21C home/awake.

Plus, the winter electrical bill is also heavily impacted and skewed by the 5kw heater I have in my detached garage, which is uninsulated, and I feel like we've had a colder winter this year than last which has probably disproportionately driven up the bill.

All in all, pretty amazing upgrade.

Then, the levels got exponentially more difficult. I started spending money on boosters and whatnot. After awhile it got stupid. The game was designed to get money from you. I stopped paying for boosters when I realized all levels can be solved without any boosters. The game then became a challenge. Level 1000……… omfg! I did after numerous attempts manage to defeat it. I’ve always been a gamer. Not so much anymore, but when the first three Mario games came out, I was one of the first to complete the game multiple times. Same with Zelda. Angry Birds. Remember that one? Finished that in no time flat. Anyway……… too much time on my hands. I should be spending my time doing something useful, like developing retro viruses or nanobots to take over this miserable planet, gulolol. Sleep is so overrated.

There's enough interest in heat pump for it's own thread. I'm guessing you're rural with oil heater? How many sq feet are you heating for the $338, and being BC Hydro thats for 2 months? So avg $169 per month?

I'm using natural gas. 2 high efficiency boilers in 2 buildings. About 4600sq foot living space, 3000 radiators/1600 in ground. Also 3000 sq ft insulated garage but only about 200sq ft radiant in the concrete. My Fortis gas was $369 for dec and $269 for Jan. I'm looking at heat pumps for when my boilers pack it in, or radiant pipes leak.

I just put an emulator (delta) on my cheapy iPad gen 9 and now it plays all the old Nintendo games. Game boy, Super Nintendo chalmers, regular Nintendo, n64. Etc. this is hilarious !

I'm allergic to dust, pollen, and hairy things, like cats and dogs. No pets and wear masks when near pollen spewing flowers like Lillies in the garden.

I have a collection that includes uncut press sheets and proofs, as well as stamp with coin sets that are rather large in size. I have complete hockey theme sets, including signed items from everyone from Bill Ranford (who's he?) to Gretzky, Lemieaux, and Crosby. No Messier........... I don't care if it's the only one of its kind on the planet, I hate that bastard that much. Christmas stamps? I have every issue since 1898 (World's first Xmas stamp). In every configuration from singles, to blocks and plate sets in all perf variations and shades (colour of ocean). Finally got Crave TV. 6 month free trial. Only problem I have is with Shaw. I have Blue Curve Gig service. Cannot get Crave unless I got subscription through them. Bastards! Their tech people are like, "Sorry, you're out of luck." I tried everything. Then, I remembered I got me a 4K Apple TV+ console. Used it a handful of times to watch Friday Night Baseball games (Blue Jays). It was so cumbersome (remote sucks monkey balls). Anyway, it works like a charm. I have my media capable receiver connected to the television via ARC HDMI. It's pretty seamless, except for that freaking remote control/ I can control it via iPhone or MacBook Pro, but man.....................

I'm in Saanich, back in the 50's my area would have been considered "rural", now it's just suburb (although I'm not far from the "urban containment" border which transitions to "rural saanich")

I think the gas infrastructure in Victoria just developed a lot slower/later than Vancouver, and as a result there's a lot of oil heating still around in the city (a lot of wood burning too). Like, the supply runs up my street, but I've never been hooked up (neither are a lot of other houses on the street), nor will I ever bother at this point.

So, little, older house, ~1800sqft with basement, not great insulation. That's $338 for all of Nov through end of Feb (4 months). $85/month.

Anyone have any recommendation for a really good Italian meatball sub ? I used to go to this place on Hastings and boundary. Close to that Irish pub. But they’ve closed down a few years ago and I can’t find a really good Italian meatball sub.

I have a feeling I’ve asked this before but a search yielded nothing

Does anyone know what these things are on the side of the HWY mostly between Vancouver and Coquitlam, they look like yellow or orange paint bucket lids, like the 5 gallon Home Depot bucket lids.

They’ve gotta be somthing not just trash because every 3-4 months they are placed on the shoulder of the highway sporadically. The last couple times they have been yellow but now I’ve seen a couple orange ones near Cassiar and HWY on-ramp..
