I miss this show. It'd be cool if there was a spin-off / sequel, where it's a crew of friends in NYC that had grown up. Maybe mid-30s.

I tried watching the Joey spinoff back in the day and thought it was pretty bad.

Hey stop with the Iceland shit.

First of all. Pics.
Secondly. Blondes !!!!! Did you get any ?!??!
Thirdly. Stories !!!!

Well, let me sum it up as this: once is enough, don't see a need to go back lol

Everything is ridiculously expensive there. I get it, mostly everything is imported there but c'mon... Slice of pizza at the mall? $15+. Fish and chips lunch for 4? $176+. Blue Lagoon was $1000 for the 4 of us and that did not include dinner. Looking to pick up a hand knit sweater? That'll be $350+, fuck you very much! Rental car, granted I booked it late, was about $1600 for 2.5 days worth. Crazy. We went to see a movie to kill time before checking into our airbnb and it was $25/person for non-vip seating. Not wildly expensive but still a little fuck you.

The way I put it was: the cruise was better than the country :lol

Sure, if you're super outdoorsy you might love the country. For most of us though, how many waterfalls you wanna see? How much are you willing to pay to see whales and puffins? Horse back riding? Every excursion was $150-$300 per person. Often times it involves 2-2.5 hours bus ride there, spend an hour doing whatever and then back on the bus so you can make it back to your ship.

On the plus side, mostly everyone speaks some English and you don't need to bring any cash with you. The people themselves were either friendly or.... stoic. Not like emotionless, but not really a lot of smiley people walking about having a good time in that country. The weather was also Vancouver winter with wind, rain and coldness in the middle of August. The scenery is nice and the air quality good too but that's about it when it comes to positives that I could ascertain.

5/10, would not go back

For reference, S Korea to me was a 4/10. Iceland was slightly better.

Don't skip out on the Lava Bread. And try the fermented rotten shark meat, if you dare!

We tried the shark, honestly I thought it would be worse. The instructions were to chew the tiny cube for 10-15 seconds and then take a shot of the alcohol (vodka?) to cleanse your palate. And yeah, it got stronger the longer you chewed that shit. Not sure why they'd eat that crap but also leave all those jelly fish alone to fester in the seas uneaten.

Manic!

Dude you're totally doing Iceland wrong, wtf are you paying $1000 for Blue Lagoon? Isn't it like $100 bucks per person? Taking buses anywhere? I thought you were driving? Everything should be free other than food and accommodation. You can see puffins for free, whales for free from the coast, seals, etc. Iceland is awesome, can't get enough of the scenery there if you drive away from the SW coast where Reykjavik is.

Did you splurge on the blue lagoon private suite or something? I went at like 9PM and it was $80CAD. Yup the food was $$$ but I managed with costco + costco gas. My VW golf at Avis wasn't too pricy either. The airbnb we stayed at was at a reasonable price, hot water smelled like sulphur cause geothermal. I didnt do any tours or excursions but self-guided the golden triangle.

How come S Korea was 4/10?

I paid for the package that was $250/person. I actually didn't mind the price because it was one of the best experiences we had there. Driving was only 1 day before the cruise and then 1.5 days after the cruise. Travelling with two people in their 70's, they weren't really interested in driving long distances to see the things I listed. My dad in particular has seen plenty of waterfalls in his life so he's fine without seeing these ones. Excursions were offered at the port cities we stopped at during the cruise, hence the prices I listed. We weren't interested lol. Also, with the weather being awful for 80% of our trip, it really didn't make any of us want to explore too far.

Aww dude a cruise...no wonder. I just talked my parents out of a cruise to Iceland as I had a look and the itinerary skipped over almost entirely the best parts of the country. I told them I would drive them around myself when they go. The Golden Circle is overrated. Things get really good after you reach Vik.

https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/bc-ferries-new-major-vessels-design-details

A lot of info on the new ferries that BC Ferries is ordering, the one item that caught my attention:

The New Major Vessels will have a length of 172 metres, a width of 27.6 metres, and a maximum displacement of 11,800 tonnes. Each ship can accommodate 2,100 passengers and crew, 358 cars, and 34 semi trucks.

These future ships will be slightly larger than the current largest ships, the Spirit-class, which run on the critically important Tsawwassen-Swartz Bay route. The two Spirit-class ships have a length of 167 metres, a width of 27.1 metres, and a maximum displacement of 11,681 tonnes, and a capacity for 2,100 passengers and crew, 358 cars, and 34 semi trucks.

Considering how much wider cars have become in the last 40 years (from a typical 67-72" to 75-80") I'm surprised that the width of the ship only increases by half a meter (~16"). I assume there is probably some limitation caused by the berths? Anyone know what would prevent them from building the ship somewhat wider for future proofing?

Also, any idea why they went only a tiny bit bigger than the Spirit class ships? I assume that's to do with things like Active Pass being so narrow?

My guess is that if a new ferry is significantly wider, then you're going to have to renovate or rebuild the landing/berth to accommodate = $$$$$. So it makes prudent sense to keep it within certain parameters so as to not have to do this.

Horseshoe Bay is already planning some major on the fly updates to the terminal itself - parking, line up, etc.

I went to Atlanta once for work, did get to check out the Clermont. It is as divey and skeevy as the show made it out to be. I remember seeing one overweight stripper smash an empty beer can with her tit. There is a nice rooftop bar in the hotel next door though in the same building if that doesn't sound like your thing.

Southern hospitality is a thing though, super friendly folks. Really enjoyed my short time there.

For Atlanta I'd do the following:

-Atlanta Botanical Garden
-Ponce City Market
-Soul food -- (SO many good spots down there)
-Football game (either NFL or college, both will be in play)
-Braves game
-Music show -- So many artists tour Atlanta find one you like during your stay (https://www.songkick.com/)
-Get HIV -- (I'm joking but ATL does have the highest HIV rates in the country, if you're partaking in any mongering and such, wrap it up)
-Strip Clubs -- Buttressed to the above, ATL has some of the best strip clubs in the country, check one out for sure, pure Americana.

Ok I'll try to be brief but there's a lot of detail I need to include for full context.

Trip started in HK, got sick, hopped on the plane to Seoul. While on board, inner ear got so fucked up I was basically deaf in one ear the entire trip. It was March but also unseasonably cold, I didn't have a heavy enough jacket, had to layer up my clothes.

From airport to hotel, there were barely any escalators/elevators to be found at any of the train stations I went through. I had to carry luggage up multiple flights of stairs while sick and deaf (not just my own, I was with a girl). Got to hotel, which is downtown Seoul, they barely spoke a word of English but we managed to get checked in. Get to the room and it is BOILING hot at 25 degrees, WTF. Tried to fiddle with the thermostat, no bueno as it's all in Korean and I can't figure it out. Called downstairs, same problem as before, no one speaks English so I can't fix this damn problem and they have no idea what I want anyways. Had to resort to keeping the window open to bring in the freezing air to cool down the fucking Sahara desert in my hotel room for the duration of our stay. Meanwhile, AC is blasting in the hallway too btw.

Ok fine whatever, time to explore and see new things. While shopping I realize the prices of things are either the same as in HK or more expensive. There were rarely any good deals other than for off brand local stuff which was fine. The more we explore the more I realize this place ain't for guys really. The majority of things you see are cosmetics, skin care and clothing which are mainly catered to girls. More context, I'm not obsessed with K pop or K dramas so really.. other than the food, not much interests me here. I did enjoy the free museums they had so that I could learn a bit about their history.

Food was for sure the highlight of this trip. However, is it really THAT much better than the Korean food I see in Richmond/Vancouver/Burnaby/Coquitlam? No, it isn't. Also, and this is a low light, we visited one of those local markets where they have these thick plastic curtains to keep the wind/cold out. I walk through and immediately some old hag GRABS me by the arm and points at a chair telling me to sit down. I was shocked. Who the fuck does that? I come to realize that everyone basically sells the same foods and with her restaurant being right at the entrance this is her way of securing more business for herself. Uh NO, fuck YOU lady I ain't giving you shit. I blow past her and make sure to give my business to literally anyone BUT her. I've never been physically grabbed like that in ANY country. The market itself was pretty sad and ghetto with food left out in the open with zero supervision. This isn't unique to Korea but it was just... yuck.

Girl watching. Me and the girl I was with actually made it a goal to find girls we thought were attractive. If you have never been and you're expecting any of them to look like the girls you see in videos/dramas well too fucking bad, they don't really exist there. We went all over the place and it was an absolute struggle to find anyone we would consider attractive. HK? Girls all over the place. Japan? Even better! Korea? Sad. I specifically remember this one sales girl in a skin care place. Her skin was so white she looked malnourished. I kid you not, my only thought was: damn girl, eat something, you're about to pass out. Maybe start taking Vitamin D if you're going to avoid the sun like a damn vampire.

The sewer smell. I have a keen sense of smell so this bothered the absolute shit out of me. I asked my friends if they had noticed the sewer smell when they visited and one actually said "yeah, but you get used to it". I'm sorry, what? You get USED to it? Fuck no! I didn't fly to another country to smell their damn sewage in what's supposed to be their most developed city. It grossed me out. There is no scenario where this would be acceptable to me.

I think that's all that comes to mind right now. There's likely more that I could add to this. This trip was by far the worst experience I've had in any country so far (as an adult). Again, if you love the place, I'm happy for you. It just isn't for me and a lot of my friends/acquaintances have had similar if not worse experiences too. There you have it, 4/10 would very likely never go again. Oh, a taxi tried to charge us more than the meter said until I argued with him and then he relented. Fucker.

Yeah honestly that’s some pretty premadonna shit other than the poopoo smell lol.
No one spoke English? Like Koreans don’t show up at hotels in Vancouver and be like “no one speaks Korean and the thermostat is in English”
Sounds like you just had a shitty trip cause you started off sick and ended up in a bad mood, which is fair.

Just out of curiosity though what hotel did you stay at? Was this at least a semi big hotel because even in a non English speaking country they'd have people who spoke passable English. Also trying to say the room is too hot and asking how you can turn down the temperature is a pretty simple thing, how did google translate fail that? Anyway, I have absolutely zero interest in ever stepping foot in Korea I just go to Japan all the time instead. Having gone the first time this year in the summer yea the sewage smell is pretty lame but thankfully it's only certain parts and I wasn't smelling it non stop.

Regarding the lack of elevators/escalators, that's the case in Japan as well. Throughout Asia, it's often so crowded in the train stations and on transit, people will get annoyed if you're lugging big suitcases around. :lol

Regarding shopping in SK, I also tend to think it's a shopping paradise mostly for girls. If you're not crazy about skin care and "treatments" then yeah it can be boring for guys.

Regarding the food, I agree that we are very spoiled in Vancouver to have access to so many different types of food. But the main bonus in Asia is that the local food is cheaper, and you don't have to tip!

I've thought about going to South Korea as well but the shopping doesn't appeal to me, and we're not crazy about Korean food, so like you, I don't think we'll end up going there...

Last two years I've been to HK, Taiwan, and Japan, and we're definitely going to re-visit those places again in the near future. There are so many interesting cities in Japan, you could easily make multiple trips there and have new stuff to see.

It's not like we were looking solely for 10/10 girls, even moderately attractive girls were extremely hard to come by. Plus, this is only people watching. It wasn't an indicator for me whether or not this place was worth visiting again. Just my observation.

I've been to HK 15+ times in my life, it's rarely as bad as the smell I caught in Seoul. It lingers on for block after block. So yeah, it was jarring to experience in a major city. Also, over the years HK has cleaned up a lot, even in poor areas. Been to Taiwan, had no issues there really. Same with Malaysia. Travel within North America actually interests me the least. Asia is my usual go to and at some point I want to see more of Europe.

Also, it's more like this:

Iceland: isolated, boring, depressing weather, extremely expensive for normal things
Korea: sewer smell, things there just don't interest me, rude older crowd (not just that market lady)
Costco sandwich: I didn't even say anything about smokiness lol. It just didn't taste good at all.

Just out of curiosity though what hotel did you stay at? Was this at least a semi big hotel because even in a non English speaking country they'd have people who spoke passable English. I don't remember the name of the hotel, it was like 10 years ago now. It was definitely one of their bigger hotels from what I recall. After making that phone call, I did end up going up to reception to see if I could speak to someone about the thermostat but again, no one could understand what I was saying so it was futile.

Taiwan is still on my list for a side quest just to eat but as a primary destination it isn't on my list. I haven't been to Hong Kong since 2011 and despite speaking the language, having family and friends there I have very little desire to go back but probably will mostly just for my 2 kids to experience at least once. I mean it's the mother land all their grandparents are from HK.

We travelled to Japan as a family for the first time in 2019 for Christmas right before COVID and all fell in love with it. Maybe not my daughter at the time though she was just 7 months old lol. My son who at the time was 5 would have dreams that he was back in Japan, he would talk about it all the time and finally last year we went back last year during Spring. My youngest who was 5 at this point fell in love and it's all she talks about now. Earlier this month I went back again for a father son trip and my daughter has been "saving up" she says because she wants to go back. Having said that, its been all Tokyo/Kyoto/Osaka so far and my wife and I would really love to do something else like Hokkaido, Okinawa and stuff but with the age of our kids and their interests I don't think that's going to be viable yet.

lol Colombia, probably have a heart attack as soon as he steps off the plane.

I swear, as a 2nd-gen Asian Canadian, we have some of the most unadventurous group of travellers around. For the most part outside of N. America we only travel to Hawaii, Mexico (Resorts only), big ticket European destinations, and Asia (Whatever country your parents are from + Japan ONLY). White people are way more open minded even if they do end up in more sticky situations.

Japan is for sure #1 country in my travel experience.

1. Ultra clean in comparison to most countries
2. Things are extremely organized (satisfies my OCD)
3. Everyone is polite and/or friendly (they're often just being polite because it's engrained into their society lol)

Food there is amazing. You have cheap street foods that are delicious and also high end foods that are significantly better with a larger variety and a much better price point than what we get here locally. As mentioned earlier, no tax and no tip required is an added bonus.

Accommodations are reasonable for whatever your budget might be. Extremely solo travel friendly if you want to go alone. Even though vast majority of them don't speak much English, you can travel around major cities and travel destinations without much issue at all. Lots of signage is in English and plenty of locals will try their best to help you out if you're in a pinch.

When it comes to entertainment, there's a million options and something for everyone. Hell, just spending hours playing crane games is entertaining when you keep winning shit lol. Buying souvenirs there is easy and affordable and much cheaper outside of tourist traps.

Overall feeling of safety in Japan is often overlooked. You can drop your wallet and people will chase you down to return it to you. Leaving your electronics to go to the washroom when at a cafe is normal there. Leaving your bike outside unlocked is also common. At no point in time have I ever felt unsafe in Japan.

There's so much more I could say about the place and so far I've only been to Tokyo (x2), Osaka and Kawaguchiko. I also want to see Okinawa, Hokkaido and eventually branch out to lesser known, lesser travelled spots in the country. I just need to do more research and learn more Japanese as necessary to navigate.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm very much looking to get some cheaper skin care products for my face when I head to Japan with the family next month.

Mineral based sunscreen and serums are expensive here.

On another note, who has done the Grouse Grind lately? I did it for the first time in over 10 years this week before I went to work. It was pretty humbling getting passed by people in their 50s and 60s. I had forgotten how tough the first quarter is if you're not in "Grind shape".

I wonder if it was deliberately to reduce the amount of payout: get most people to ignore it, dismissing it as yet another scam...

According to the class action site, an email was sent on Wednesday, Aug. 27, from donotreply@e.ricepoint.com to claims being paid by e-transfer that contains their security answer, which is the person’s birthday month spelled in full (January, June, December; not Jan, Jun, Dec).

Colombia is HIGHLY dependent on where you go as far as girl is concerned.

You'd be quite disappointed if you stayed in Bogota. Medellin would have more nice girls in general as their population is more European decedent-based rather than native.

Then you have coastal cities like Cartagena/Barranquilla where the "Colombian hotties" in our North American mind would most likely be found. Big nice round ass is daily sight.

For Spoon, I may have an explanation for your hotel woes. We ran into a similar problem in Shanghai, it was Nov and the hotel room was just cooking hot. We tried to adjust it and turn up the fan to no avail, it just kept getting hotter and hotter and hotter.

We asked the front desk and they sent some one up and they couldn't figure it out. They finally got a hold of the engineer and the explanation was it was winter and the the AC is not on. When we turn on the fan it just blows more hot air in as it's central. The room we were in was cheap and did not have a window so we couldn't even just let cold air in.

They ended up switching us to another room, we opened the windows and turned off the fan so the room would drop to a temperature we were comfortable with.

donk.

Bang on they dont speak Canto. My wife and I both do very well for CBCs but of course we had the benefit of being 1st generation so our parents only spoke Canto at home + tvb on non stop + for me anyway I went to Churchill and Hamber so plenty of Honger friends meaning i got to use my Canto throughout my entire life. With my eldest we focused more on Canto first because we knew English would come. We weren't hard-core about it but did speak it more and up until he was 5 his Canto was better than his English. Once school started game overs. Could/should we have tried and spoke it more? Yes but ah wells lol he's 11 now and while we could still force it who are we kidding. With my youngest we didn't even try. Yea they both get a little from grandparents and they understand more than they can speak but that ship has sort of sailed for us haha.

I'd say it's not too late. Really, if they are motivated to learn Canto, they will. I've told the story many times but when I moved here from Calgary (age 12) I didn't know jack shit. Over the years I've become fluent because it has been extremely useful at work and in my personal life. Had I stayed in Alberta, I'm sure I would still know next to nothing about my own language.

It's become nicer over the past decade due to gentrification, kinda like what Mount Pleasant used to be before it blew up as a yuppie neighborhood IMO.

Also didn't know Union Market reopened under new ownership - I thought the place closed and that was it for that spot when the previous owners retired. Used to buy a lot of bacalhau and egg tarts back in the day.

We used to go to Powell Street Festival, and before COVID, I swear that even in the area between Oppenheimer Park to Hastings, things just look a bit run down, but the atmosphere never made me uncomfortable.

But then in 2022 or 2023 when we went again, we parked on Keefer Street right at MacLean Park, and walked to Oppenheimer Park for the festival. Along Keefer, everything was still comfortable and nice, if a bit old. As we walked past Pender along Jackson, it was as if things suddenly took an apocalyptic turn. The smell and sightings of urine and feces (esp urine) were hitting us pretty frequently, and there were quite a number of homeless people scattered along different places as well. At Oppenheimer Park where the festival was taking place, it was also obvious the homeless crisis was hitting the festival grounds hard. It was really heart-wrenching to see -- both for the festival itself, as well as for the homeless people that were there.

We didn't go back the following year (or maybe following 2 years -- I dun remember too well) bcos the neighbourhood had left us with such a strong and negative impression, and I really didn't want to bring my child there, and have him experience all that (again). I am also honestly sorry and sad to see something we enjoyed taking a turn that way as well. Then this year, we were busy during the festival period, so we didn't go.

I'm glad to hear that MacLean Park is able to retain its peace and quiet. But it sounds like as soon as you start approaching Hastings' direction, things are still taking a turn for the worst. :(

I was down at the Woodward's building yesterday for dinner and other than the smell of piss things were largely fine down there. We gave our 6 year old a little chat about how we'd see some people who weren't well down there but we didn't get stabbed with needles or get mugged or threatened by anyone. Are things good down there? Nah but it's not as some people may describe it.

It was actually interesting to see that area of the city from up high (21st floor) - there were two daycares with playgrounds across the street from us on the top floor of their respective buildings and a lot of pretty rooftops with people enjoying themselves outside (and a few pretty beat up ones). From up high it kinda seemed just a bit vibrant?

We're in the exact same boat! :)

My older one understands basic Canto, but that's all.

My younger one gets annoyed if we start talking to him in Canto. :lol The funny thing is that he's been taking Mandarin for a couple of years at Langara (2.5 hrs per week) and he's good at picking up languages. When we were in Taiwan/HK this March, he preferred Taiwan because he understood what people were saying. His pronunciation is excellent and I bet he could have a basic conversation in Mandarin. Meanwhile, I've given up on Mandarin myself because my tones are heavily influenced by my Cantonese upbringing...

beat him in the face until his cantonese improves. If my shanghainese ass can speak it, he has no excuse.

Dont lose what makes HK and Guangdong province special. Shanghainese is already a lost language, even the retards who speak it nowadays, speak it strangely vs how we spoke it when i was growing up... dont let cantonese become the next shanghainese.

you can yarrr yarr yarr ni haoooo marrr later when we win WW3.

When I was in HK visiting the in-law's extended family a number of years ago, I met some of their elementary school-aged children. Neither of them spoke Cantonese (WTF????) but were proficient in Mandarin. They were telling us about their love for China (not HK!) and their loyalty to the motherland. Needless to say, I was a bit taken back (??????) but also not surprised because of the Mainland influence there. :inoutugh:

Be prepared to accept the fact that some of your kids will become Chinese Communists one day. :D

Cantonese is definitely one of the most interesting languages in the world.

Heck, even Google translate has a feature where you can translate between English and Cantonese and vice versa.

It's more than a language though. It's part of the identity and culture of millions of Chinese people. -still the main language of Hong Kong, for now.

Cantonese has some of the most crude swear words in any language. :lawl:

DLLM Chau Hai!!! LUL

That's just one of the more common swear words in Canto.

It's like when a person goes full Canto swearing on another person, it's like "Fuck you, Fuck your mother, fuck your father, fuck your grandparents, fuck your ancestors, you smelly pussy!" :lawl:

I would respond in kind in Canto to that vendor. If it's a Chinese uncle, go aggressive in your reply like what Hobz says.

Say "Ah bak! Guangdong wah!!! Nai long ah, diu nei lun yeung????" The loose translation into English would be

"Yo unc, it's Cantonese. Are you deaf, fuck your fucked up face!"

If it's a Chinese lady, just use the variation and stay aggressive: "Ah mo, Guangdon wah! Nai long ah, Diu nei goh chou hai!!!"

Hong Kong ‘lawyer’ bailed in HK$80,000 champagne dinner dine-and-dash case
Man, 23, allegedly pretended to be a lawyer before leaving date to pay lavish Man Wah restaurant bill including HK$71,800 bottle of champagne
(that's 12k bottle CDN)

Police said on Friday that at around 10pm on Thursday, they received a report from the woman, who suspected she had been scammed after her date, whom she had met online, left without settling the bill. The case was listed as a “request for police assistance,” and no one has been arrested so far.

According to local media reports, the pair wined and dined at Man Wah, a Michelin-starred Chinese restaurant at the Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong hotel in Central.

They ordered the “Man Wah Premium Set Dinner,” priced at HK$2,388 per person, and a bottle of 2002 Krug Clos d’Ambonnay champagne, which cost a jaw-dropping HK$71,800. The total bill, including a 10 per cent service charge, amounted to more than HK$84,000.

The woman, 31, met her date, a man around 26 or 27 years old, who claimed to be a lawyer, via messaging app Telegram, local media said.

According to HK01, the man excused himself during the dinner and never returned to the table. The woman failed to reach the man and eventually settled the bill with help from friends.

I think prostituion is not illegal in Hong Kong as long as it is the sex worker dealing directly with the customer. There are some other restrictions in place as well, but I think they pretty much boil down to it only being not illegal if it is happening in someone's private residence.

Laws around anyone supporting prostitution are extremely strict. I remember reading that in theory, even a laundromat washing bath towels for a sex worker could be considered as providing support to prostitution, and is in violation of the law. Pimping is also illegal.

Don't ask me why I know this. :lawl:

We saw that heli at Parksville last week. We were eating at the airport restaurant so the kids can see planes, and that heli landed and a Range Rover drove into the field to pick them up. Guess he's still in the area based on your map.

We had the luxury is staying on my friend's yacht for a few days near that area in Desolation Sound last year, around Prideaux Haven and Pendrell Sound. All the rich fucks gather over the August long weekend out there, tie up various boats and have a big party. They have a massive barge anchored out there where they throw a few "themed" parties, and music performances.

It comes with soup -- red for borscht, or white for cream of corn, garlic toast, your choice of carbs (rice / spaghetti / fries, and maybe mash potato?), choice of gravy -- you may like black pepper better, but I'll take garlic, an HK style drink -- HK milk tea is good, though some may prefer yin-yeung (or a milk tea - coffee blend), and a BS dessert.

Would not recommend 54th Ave Cafe. I'd rather go get food from the Chinese(-ish) food stall inside Champlain Square instead.

Looking for some advice.

We just found out a buddy (let's call him, John) has some sort of liver problem now and it's likely due to stress from his life and that he drinks a decent amount.

Now this is all second hand from his wife who talked to my wife about his condition. John's wife doesn't know he drinks a lot as he doesn't drink around her, but I know for a fact that he sneaks drinks in when she's not looking becaues i'm literally with him.

My wife told me I need to talk to him now that he has an actual liver condition and that I should tell him he needs to stop drinking.

What am I supposed to do here? Am I supposed to tell this grown ass friend of mine how to live his life and to change the person he is. Is this diagnosed condition not the wake up call he needs? He didn't even telll me about his condition and I saw him last week, doesn't that mean he doesn't want me to know?

I've known this guy a long ass time, but what's the call here?

You don't need to "tell him how to live his life" but you should probably talk to him about it and offer support if you're more familiar and friendly with him than just a coworker.

The fact that he hides it from his wife is proof that he knows it's wrong, but he's an alcoholic so he just hides it.

But he still has to want to quit, and you can't force anything onto him. Declining health, even liver disease isn't enough to automatically make an alcoholic quit. "hitting rock bottom" isn't either, so snitching isn't going to make him quit either.

IMO offer support, but don't go into it thinking you can convince him to quit drinking. If he doesn't want to, then he won't. If he says sure I'd like to try, then go from there. First step there would probably be for him to tell his wife

Punch him in the nuts. Why do you always get involved in other peoples problems ?! If my bro on here has a drinking problem I’d go buy him some more booze. You cant help people who don’t want help. The first steps starts with him and not you. Leave him alone, these types of things is better for self realization than some external force trying to pressure change

Next time you see him, do the alcoholic a favor, and bring a bottle.

Derailing your post below:

When i was like 11 years old, my mom would deport me back to the motherland every summer, i stayed on a backyard farm with my moms friends.

The dad, liked to drink.
The mother, did not like that the dad liked to drink.

I had two whole months of doing nothing, a couple times a week i would run down to the corner store with like 20c that i would find on the ground to buy bubble gum or whatever.

Sometimes the dad would see me leaving, so he would "take out the trash" in the exact same time.

He would catch me just outside their complex door, or such and it would go like this: "hey HEY donk, wait up! i have an extra 60c for you, if you just bring me back a bottle, but be QUICK!, i only have a few minutes before the wife starts asking questions!"

So anyways i would run down with my extra 60c, super excited, get to the corner store, pick up a 2L bottle of beer, and some extra gum or candy for myself, then run back to the front of the gate where the dad was waiting for me. (Yes they will sell to beer kids in ukraine, they dont care, same goes for cigarette)

By the time i got to the gate, i was greeted with the biggest smile from the dad, eyes glossy, soul glowing, the best part was watching him CHUG the shit out of this 2L bottle within seconds, i looked up at him, like a god, chugging that shit as if it was his last meal.

I’d step in, liver failure is no joke. I’ve seen patients turn homer simpson yellow from it and there is no medicine or cure for it except getting a liver transplant, which is not readily available and if you are an alcoholic they will turn you down. Yes it sucks to give up booze and fatty foods but thats what you gotta do to stay alive

I find it a little surprising that the wife doesn't know about John's drinking habits, or how much he drinks.

When I used to drink (casually), my parents always knew. There is the alcohol breath, and then my clothes would take on some sort of alcohol smell as well since apparently I'd sweat something out that smell different.

At any rate, does "John" have any children, esp if they are relatively young? I've heard of / known a few people who had some health issues / scares that really made them reflect on their life choices and habits. In these people's case, one of the frequently cited reasons for them to change their (bad) habits was because they still wanted to be around watching their kids grow up, or be there as their kids grow up.

IMO it is more rare for the husband to watch to change / give up some sort of (bad) habits for the wife, or even for himself. But he'd be willing to do it for the kids.

Is that an angle you can work with?

(On the other hand, I feel like alcoholism and gambling are both habits that are very difficult to quit.)

If you seen him sneaking drinks, you don't need an excuse just bring it up... you don't even need to bring up the liver problem just say hey if you're hiding your drinking there's a problem bro are you gonna do something about it or what's your long term plan here you know it's bad for our health as we get older... something like that and just take it form there? He might even tell you about the liver issues on his own if they're true.

If you're close friends it behooves you to talk to him, even from the angle of you being worried about him, and caring for his health.

I've known this guy a long ass time, but what's the call here?

Does your friend have children? If he does, appeal to his desire to be a good father and tell him to stop drinking so that his children don't see him die young.

If that doesn't work, there's definitely a stigma against alcohol these days, particularly among middle-aged men. Send him a few YouTube clips about middle-aged men cutting back alcohol consumption, self-improvement, etc. and let the algorithm do its work.

Every man should be in a group chat with a bunch of buddies where they can talk about the shitty stuff in life - work sucks, my wife is nuts, doctor says I'm gonna die, I'm sad etc - and be given support for it (and then subsequently be razzed over and over again about it)

A few years back I got fired from my job (I, as a VP, very undiplomatically and publicly called bullshit about some culture stuff that the head of HR really cared about and it turned out she was dating the CEO) - so two of the guys in my group chat go on Cameo and hired William Hung to record a video to console me.

Has anyone had to navigate the "Mom/Dad, I think you need to talk to your doctor b/c I think you have dementia?" conversation with their parents (and your siblings)? My dad is showing clear signs of dementia (has been for years) and he has refused all the requests my mom has made to him to get help and it's time for me (and my brother) to step in.

I've spoken my own family doctor about what's happening and have read up on all the symptoms and the process etc but getting my mom and my brother to take concrete steps to move this forward has been challenging.

My mom's having a really hard time with this - they been married for over 50 years and she's bearing the burden of living with the effects of my dad's increasing impairment but she's not willing to force the issue with him (as a result she's increasingly isolating herself from her friends and family). I've told her she needs to start documenting every incident that's happening (his memory loss, his unstable emotions etc) so we can have a convo with the doctor with some evidence.

My brother, OTOH, is just avoiding the issue - I can't get him to read up and understand what's happening and address it. He'd just rather avoid my dad.

As for me, I don't have the best of relationships with my dad and I need to find ways to have this conversation with him that doesn't become antagonistic quickly - I know I need him to come to terms with it through his own recognition of the problem rather than me dropping the hammer on him.

I'm mostly curious how it went for you, what was surprising, what was really hard, where are things at etc. Did you also make other preparations (For example, I've advised my mom to get a power of attorney setup that directs things to me rather than my dad) (Is this where I DM PeanutButter for his advice?)

My mom side has a history of Alzheimer’s. I’ve told her time and time again to see a shrink but she always says I’m the crazy one. I reminded her that her mom was in the hospital for years not being able to remember anyone, do you really wanna go down that route ? Same with her sisters in China. All retarded.

Nope. Just brushes me off while getting weirder and more retarded every year. Whatever. If you don’t want help, don’t except me to give a shit. Only so much I can do.

Buys carfax for 80$ > no vehicle status
Shows everything else tho

Icbc website direct is 20$ for vehicle status.

Carfax is poo. I have mileage discrepancies from them in my own ownership in the e36. Guess my mileage jumped 80k in 2 months then dropped 70k a year later. Sounds legit. Impossible to get anyone to deal with it so I just don’t bother.

And what are the possible outcomes for the zero claims? Something that took zero dollars to polish out?

Damn... I'd be pissed if I paid $80 for Carfax, and it doesn't show vehicle status.

Getting to see the vehicle status is like 1/3 of the reason to pay for Carfax.

Yah, I learned recently that many mechanics, shops, and even dealers don't subscribe or participate in Carfax so there are a LOT of gaps or missing info. It's not what it used to be in terms of a reliable report.

We see a lot of dementia cases in Emergency. Unfortunately, I don't know how the process works beforehand with setting up Power of Attorney and whatnot but my guess is it usually involves Social Workers to intervene along side family members. It would of course be more ideal to manage the situation without having to come to Emergency.

Online resources I found:

https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/family-social-supports/seniors/health-safety/disease-and-injury-care-and-prevention/dementia-information

https://alzheimer.ca/bc/en/help-support/programs-services/dementia-resources-bc

Denial from family members will only delay the inevitable outcome. Care giver burnout from your mom will likely come next which usually leads to a visit to Emergency. Ideally you can convince your family to avoid this route and manage better in the comfort of home.

We went through this with my mother, and it's tough man.

Power of attorney is very important, and as a family you may need to start discussing the idea of assisted living, eventually. We ended up having to put my mother into an assisted living facility because it became too dangerous for her to live on her own. People with dementia can leave sinks running and flood their home, or leave the stove on and cause a fire.

It sucks man, but preparing yourself and the family for the inevitable deterioration is important, and looking into how housing will be handled as things get worse.

I don't have any personal advice to offer other than saying I'm sorry this is happening to you and your family. From the caretaking side of things, it sounds like the right time to find a spot in a care home for your father to lighten the burden on your mom (especially since it's affecting her own QoL). I believe finding a spot in a public care home takes quite some time, so you might want to plan ahead for that as well.

One of my friends went through a similar process with his mom. I don't know the details besides knowing it was a difficult but correct choice to put her in a care home. He felt guilty initially, but there came a point where at-home care was no longer safe as the dementia worsened, even with the help of multiple caretakers in his case.

From my understanding, his mom adjusted quickly to the care home and liked having people around her to socialize with vs being at home. And in my friend's case, he got a bit of his life back and was less stressed from knowing she was in an appropriate facility with trained staff and amenities that could tend to her needs as her condition deteriorated.

Feel for you supa, I don’t see my parents as much anymore since moving away and my mom is turning 80 next month, she’s been nearly deaf for like 3 years now and refuses to admit it / breaks down crying and locks herself in her room if confronted with it… I told her there’s no shame and even said my friend (you) has to deal with a hearing diagnosis much much younger why not take advantage of technology and not feel isolated and not included in conversations anymore but so far I’ve failed to get her to do anything.

My dad too he’s younger by 7 years but last time I saw him he was retelling things more than usual and forgetting words a lot and taking not logical steps to repairs or situations which is weird because he’s an engineer and software programmer by trade and my sister and I are afraid things might be headed in your dads direction too.

Supa, sounds like you need a Rep 7. You don't need a Social Worker, you need a lawyer or notary to help complete the Rep 7. It gets you the medical decision making and small financial decisions.

I think it is best to get all three:
1. Power of Attorney to deal with legal financial stuff.
2. Representation agreement to deal with health decisions (although from experience, docs and nurses will automatically turn to next of kin for directives with or without, obviously better to have)
3. Advanced directive of DNR. For most people older than say 70, you want a DNR. It is quite an aggressive way to try and save you in the event your heart stops. Pounding on chest, ribs breaking. In most cases, if a person is past a certain age, just let the person go. Not sure if she/he can recover from a code blue recovery.

This for sure.

It might sound morbid, and not applicable perhaps to your mother, but connected to the third point here in DNR.

Putting into writing your intent for MAID while you're still considered stable minded, and have your full faculties. Getting MAID becomes all the more difficult if you're deemed unable to make decisions on your own.

My mother is 82 is wishes should could end it at this point, though with dementia that is almost impossible for her to now make that decision medically. She asks my GF all the time to get her pills from the hospital to help her end her own life, it's a miserable experience.

I feel bad for her because if I was in her situation I'd want MAID as well. My sisters and I have joked about getting her fentanyl from a dealer on the DTES for her, morbid Irish humor, obviously that would never happen.
