it's not what logic we can provide, it's if your wife / gf can accept it or not.
My wife came to me looking for a travel ring.. sure.. aliexpress 2 carat $8 bucks. so she wears it on vacation. You won't even be able to pull that off as a engagement ring despite no one can tell the diff unless they look carefully.

None of them can ever logically argue against the fact that "real" diamonds 100% involve human suffering in order to be obtained. But as usual, society/the market has influenced them too much to care.

Went to Lansdowne today for a few things. Paid a quick visit to Cotti Coffee to see what they have available. It's a 20% off of drinks for their grand opening but their staff are slow as fuck and you can tell none of them are hustling to get orders out the door quickly. There was a pretty big group of customers all waiting and complaining while workers were just going along at casual speed. Kind of pissed me off lol. I was short on time so I didn't bother ordering anything.
Before that, I paid a visit to Vegas Vacations. I was hoping to take a photo in front of the store as a joke but to my surprise their doors were open. Just by chance, there was a customer there and you could tell he was upset. He kicked the glass door, yelled at some lady working there. Walked in, kicked the desk, yelled some more. Later on, sat down and continued yelling. Sign on the door indicates they are only open to deal with existing customers. Man, I do not envy anyone who works at that shit show right now
https://www.ctvnews.ca/vancouver/article/it-was-a-scam-customers-speak-out-as-bc-travel-agencys-licence-cancelled/
there was a CTV new 3 mins video.
I have been a loyal client with Las Vegas vacation for solid 10+ years. Finny has been great. Now it's a younger girl took over, i'm assuming that's her daughter?
She said she is owned by 'owners" that's the same line I use when I pitch to clients fully knowing i'm the only owner.
Long story short, i can't comment on the new / license suspension, but I can say
a) I've used her and it was free to pick seats at an airline... (they make like $20 bucks on a ticket) (2005-201X)
b) I did book a trip to vegas and they got me credit etc and picked a decent hotel for me which I would not have noticed. (2014)
c) NOW---- the time she SCREWED ME OVER...
I booked a long trip YVR, stop over in HKG then to NZ. that ticket was $k and she got me a deal to be in prem economy.
24 hours before check in, I couldn't check in, i'm like wtf, i got an actual ticket print out. SO i called Finny and I had to be super nice to her cause if she Fs me over, and cancels, my entire plan is doomed.
I think what she did was booked the entire ticket again. I don't know what happened, but I got on the flight and 30 days later, took a flight back.
To date after 6+ years later, I still have a pending charge on my credit card that's on dispute but never collected. wtf is right.
That's finny in the balaneceigagiagag toque

My wife isn't a jewellery person at all. She rarely wears it, and the stuff she has isn't expensive at all. Just a few sentimental items passed down through the family.
But when it came to her ring, that was a really big deal to her. And honestly, it made me feel good to get her something that's rare, one of a kind, etc.
Don't get me wrong, we're not talking a crazy expensive ring. It's like 0.92 carat or something. And we made sure to get a Canadian diamond.
So yeah, call it a victim of marketing, but I'm ok with it.
As for my wedding band, it's a cheap tungsten one. They tried to sell me on gold this an gold that and I was like no way, what a waste of money :fuckthatshit:

https://www.cp24.com/local/toronto/2026/01/23/alleged-drug-lord-ryan-wedding-arrested-report/
Canadian former Olympic snowboarder-turned alleged drug kingpin Ryan Wedding is now in police custody, according to multiple reports.
Wedding, who’s accused of running a multi-billion dollar drug empire, was listed on the FBI’s 10 most wanted fugitives list and was reportedly being protected by the notorious Sinaloa Cartel in Mexico prior to his arrest.
The FBI first publicly identified Wedding as a suspect in a sweeping indictment released in October of 2024. At the time, authorities in the United States charged that Wedding was the mastermind behind a drug-trafficking empire that was shipping narcotics from Colombia, through Mexico, and into the U.S. and Canada. Nine other Canadians were also named in the indictment.

same. we were ignorant of 'quality' and went with a name brand location to give her piece of mind. i didn't like the idea of it, but hey, it's more for her than for me, and she was being very reasonable, smaller diamond to suit the size of her hand which is small. similar to band, small custom made band i swear was like $100 (again, small hand so thin band).
me, i think i got a $20 stainless steel band off ebay :lol
i didn't go with tungsten b/c i heard those really hard metals are hard to break if you're ever in an accident and would always fear losing a finger :lol
probably stems to a foreman explaining why guys on site wore silicone wedding bands was due to risk of degloving, and then googled some pics to explain to me what that was :ohgodwhy:

funny you mention travel ring, i had a coworker do the same, i asked why, she said so she doesn't get grief at customs. i think flying back from HK one time they tried to force her to pay duties on her engagement ring that she didn't buy there and just travelled with it. took a lot of arguing and probably providing some proof but she was let through.

I've had that experience too, waiting to pick up checked luggage at the carousel. Roving CBSA officers around. We had just come back from HK too. Wife got the Q's about where we bought the engagement ring, wedding band. I got grilled on my wedding band (Costco), and watch. It didn't get as far as the more formal grilling.
Part of it too is they're looking at how you answer the questions as well. If you hesitate, or the answers don't mesh, they might take a bigger interest in you.
CBSA would definitely look at flights from specific destinations to target. You know theres specific ethnicities that are more likely to under declare stuff.

Not a CBSA officer and putting aside what some ethnicities tend to do more than others is it really a common thing for people to travel abroad and be buying engagement rings and or wedding bands? Like does it not seem normal that if a couple has been married for years already had these items bought many moons ago and they simply just wear it all the time travelling or not? Anyway just curious as these stories are common which is one of the reasons why my wife never ever travels with any jewelry or even her more expensive handbags but of course the main reason being she doesn't want to damage it or get it jacked while on a trip.

People smuggle almost anything, but jewellery bought or gifted is a big thing. Save on taxes as well I suppose.
CBSA will look for high value items like camera lenses, watches etc. You can always preregister your items with them via the BSF407, Identification of Articles for Temporary Exportation form, and prove it's an item you had before you travel. A couple of video/photographers I know have done that wth their gear.
If you're travelling with a 3 watch roll, might be a good idea to register them. I travel with a Seiko 5 GMT auto and G-shocks, so I've never bothered.

I travel with expensive camera gear, never been asked. When in doubt throw some dirt on it, and its no longer new. (Coming back from usa day trip with "nothing to declare")

F that.. if that is the case.. i'll just show it on aliexpress. if not.. just throw the ring in the trash... so stupid.
Did that once before. Mom and dad got their Rolex seized. We had to provide proof. Took a while (1990), but we got back with no tax. If they did take a CZ ring... PERFECT.. just leave it with the guard ... F that BS.
I have to say, if it's an engagement ring that you bought somewhere else... then yeah.. you gotta pay duties...
Just cause it's engagement ring, you still gotta pay taxes.

Indians often bring gold back and forth between Canada and India. Gold is a sentimental thing in Indian families. So if you're going to India for a wedding, or coming back from India after getting married, more often than not they'll be looking for any gold jewellery that was acquired during the trip, and then expect you to pay duty on it.

Definitely can understand some of the high value items i.e. camera lenses and gifted jewelry. I guess I was just narrowing down specifically wedding bands and engagement rings like officer how many freaking engagement rings do you think one person would get but I suppose the answer is how ever many the wife wants.

The CBSA agent that day was definitely targeting jewelry and watches that day. She was cruising the area while we waited for luggage. Watched her point at several wrists and fingers as she was questioning people. Was eyeballing anyone with bling.

Long before I met my Chiropractor, I went to Kintec. They were nice but the product was shit. I don't know about now but they used to make you step in a block of foam to get a measurement for your feet. My Chiropractor has an electronic pad that you walk across that provides much better data for making corrections to your feet. 4 dogs dead after viral outbreak in Downtown Eastside https://share.google/PyLoaFNhskgbmqzl9
Four dogs are confirmed to have died after an outbreak of canine parvovirus in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside (DTES), the BC SPCA says.
The virus is highly contagious and is often deadly in unvaccinated dogs, the group says.
“A building manager in the area reached out to the BC SPCA’s Animal Helpline with concerns about a number of sick animals in their building,” said BC SPCA veterinarian Dr. Kyla Townsend.
In response, and to stop the spread of the disease, Townsend and other volunteers set up an “emergency clinic”, vaccinating 92 dogs.
“As soon as it was confirmed that we were dealing with a possible canine parvovirus outbreak, BC SPCA Vancouver Animal Hospital teams jumped right into planning a free vaccination clinic so vulnerable dogs and puppies could be protected from the virus.”
The vaccinations were administered on Thursday in Oppenheimer Park.
The BC SPCA is recommending pet owners to monitor their animals for the signs of parvovirus, which include lethargy, loss of appetite, severe, often bloody, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain and bloating, fever or low body temperature.
“Anyone whose dog or puppy is showing these symptoms should seek veterinary help right away. Early treatment for parvovirus is critical for recovery,” Townsend said.

Whats wrong with a foam block? It literally creates a profile of your foot
The flat pad can see how high your arches are?

01-28-2026, 07:15 AM
I had corns under the left and right side of each foot for years like for as long as I can remember. Didn't matter what shoe or shoe size. I guess normal dude behavior I chose just to endure it. It wasn't like terrible, the corns were not nasty or huge but it was always there. Generally, it was painless to walk but if I landed off center and onto the corn it did hurt.
Fast forward to 2024 I encountered left glute pain and thought it would just go away because maybe I tweaked it at the gym, it didn't. Days became weeks, weeks became months and finally I went for massages, physio and nothing worked. Ended up at a chiro who used to work for the Canucks and first thing he noticed was it looked like I was flat footed although it may have no relation to my injury (it didn't). I ended up after dealing with the glute issue getting orthotics with him using the foam block method. Man, freaking life changing I don't know why my dumbass never got on this years ago despite always having benefits for it. Unfortunately, no direct billing and getting it approved was a pain in the ass, my provider doesn't even cover them if you're over the age of 18 or something but luckily my wife's plan did cover most of it with a doctors note.
Sorry for the long story, I guess what I'm saying is if you have coverage, get this shit done.

It'd be cool if municipalities could integrate traffic control with the Google/Apple navigation back-end.
Imagine if emergency services had to get into an area, and everybody's GPS navigation automatically steered them around it. The majority would follow the instructions, no questions asked. No big deal if a couple of people ignore it.

Yeah, I think the current urban concept is really just a stripped down Superstore for areas where they can't put a Superstore. In the past No Frills really was NO FRILLS but the concept has changed since it launched in Ontario in the last 70s (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_Frills_(grocery_store))

Bar none Save-on-Foods has amazing deals. Only if you have their app and a More Rewards card. You have to go to "My Offers" and load the week's offers.
Last week, I purchased two loaves of Baked in Store French Bread, two Uncle Ben's Original Bistro Express pouches (the ones you just microwave), and two cans of Bush's Baked Beans for $3.50 or so.
This week's offers are okay. 1KG of Mitchell's Heritage Bacon for $9.99. Not bad.
As for No Frills, I find the Hastings and Clarke Drive location has some amazing in-store, not advertised, offers. Nobody shops regular prices. You guys are such noobs. Hell, even the most expensive places like Safeway and Shoppers Drug Mart have amazing deals once in a while.

Yeah I'm pretty interested too, it's almost criminal how under-reported it is in the mainstream media. I just hope it goes all according to plan and their heat shield holds up. The World really needs a win right now, but I'm afraid it'll just be ignored for the most part and drowned out by some stupid Trump antic like announcing he'll militarize Jupiter or something.

I'm actually quite shocked how underreported this is.
From my last interest in the subject, it had sounded like a landing on the moon was quite some time away, at minimum sometime in the 2030s.
The fact that now we're looking to land by 2028 is impressive.

Return? When did humanity first go to the moon? :lol
So as I understand it, they are really practicing & testing for the lunar landing in the near future, 2028 or whenever. But I'm thinking, they landed a few times in the 60's, 70's ... and we have more tech, more computational power, more data, more research etc. Why would they need so much 'practice' for the landing ... I guess we don't want another Apollo 13 moment. Too many things can go wrong on a mission like this ??!!

Guys, you aren't going to believe this shit..
So I get scam calls every so often, but one i've gotten lately is from Ledger. They had a major data breach awhile back so my information is out there.
It's always a british person calling saying my device is compromised and I need to send them information, other times they ask me for the secret seed phrase, whatever.
I always like to talk to these guys to try and figure out how they would potentially scam me.. I'm just curious like that.
Anyway, a few minutes into the call, I just straight up say, "Hey man, just curious, how many people fall for this scam".
No word of a lie, this guy goes, "Duddddde, people are stupid (And laughs)". He was using a voice spoofer and he immediately cut it. He sounded like some black guy from the states.
I ask him, how many people actually fall for it though, is it like 10%. He says, honestly, some days it's none, but some days it's everyone.
I then ask him, how much can you make. he said, "ahaha some days it's $500k". I say, no fucking way, no way, he says, "Seriously, i'm being 100, why would I need to lie to you".
I talked to him for a few more minutes, he's been doing it for two years, he found using the british accent is better because people feel more comfrotable with it, then I say, You know, I would think people with a ledger should be more savvy about this type of stuff, and he says, "It's all human psychology though, if you think you're in danger and about to lose everything you can do some pretty stupid shit".
Then he goes, "Aiite man I'll leave you be, have a good day"
I couldn't fucking believe what he told me. Absolutely fucking wild he can make $500k from scamming people in one day. Absolutely crazy. No wonder people scam people. If the pay day is that big... Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeesh

I mean he can get $500K for the company he works with .. he's not making $500K in one day. But wild how he broke out of his character. If the call was recorded, I think he probably got his arse fired.
But honestly, these guys are vermin and the lowest of the lows when it comes to crime. They often target gullible, non techy seniors, cause a LOT of damage for family. These guys should be hung upside down and water board tortured.

I had a door completely replaced on my Mazda and it was just under $3000, but my paint was also metallic so it required a bit more labour.
Door, fender, mirrors will need replacing. Bumper looks ok for the most part (some surface damage, clips detached presumably from fender damage). This assumes only cosmetic repairs needed. Not sure if that part of the frame is fixable above the wheel.
I imagine around $6000-6500 if done out of pocket, but through ICBC it's more likely that it'll get written off for what looks like an older Corolla.

-speaking of teens, I just read about the stabbing on Monday, February 2nd after a high school basketball game.
One teen got a big stab in his arm. -rushed to hospital for surgery. Another teen was injured by another teen using a bike lock.
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/vancouver-police-school-stabbing-9.7073068
Killarney beat Eric Hamber at Hamber high school 97-95 in triple OT.
Apparently, the game had playoff implications.
VPD are going to put police officers at playoff basketball games in high school?
An 18-year-old was stabbed in the arm following a heated high school basketball game in Vancouver on Monday night, according to police.
"During one of those fights, an 18-year-old boy was stabbed, sustained serious injuries to his arm," he told a news conference.
"He was taken to hospital, I believe. My understanding is he underwent a surgery or significant medical treatment at hospital and is recovering."
Addison said that a suspect hasn't yet been arrested in the case, and they're aware of at least one other victim who was likely hit with a bike lock.
"It would be premature to say how many people may be responsible for crimes that occurred during a fight like that," he said.
Police are asking anyone with more information on the case to call them, and submit any video they have of the fight via their website.
Addison said there was understandably a lot of concern from Vancouver parents, and said police will assign extra school liaison officers to both schools for the rest of the week.
Vancouver police say they were called out just before 9:10 p.m. PT to Eric Hamber Secondary School, after a game between Hamber and Killarney Secondary.
Police spokesperson Sgt. Steve Addison said there were a number of fights that broke out between spectators at the important game, which had playoff implications for both teams.

What is with some high school students this week???
First the stabbing on Monday night after a high school basketball game at Eric Hamber.
Next, we have multiple schools in Coquitlam under lock down. Somebody called schools to make threats.
https://vancouver.citynews.ca/2026/02/04/multiple-schools-coquitlam-hold-and-secure-phoned-threats/
The Coquitlam RCMP has put multiple schools in Coquitlam on hold-and-secure after those schools received alleged phoned-in threats on Wednesday afternoon.
Police say the measures are being put in place out of an abundance of caution to keep students, staff, and teachers safe.
Officers responded to the threats shortly after 12:25 p.m. and remain on scene.
“A hold-and-secure involves keeping students in their classrooms to allow staff and, in this case, the RCMP, ensure the school is safe,” assistant director Ken Hoff of School District No. 43 (Coquitlam) said in a written statement.
The district says that local businesses in the area also received similar threats.

3rd parties egging people on are the real catalysts.
That's pretty much how my kid almost ended up in a scrap with a 2nd kid.
2nd kid was hassling my kids friend, and mine told him to stop. 2nd kid gets his back up and postures. 3rd kid starts egging them on and says, "you should punch <kid 2>." 2nd kid heard "punch <kid 2>" and starts swinging. My kid is in Tae Kwon Do, so he just blocks both punches before I can close the 20 feet and separate them.
Long story short, no one got in serious trouble. Kid 2 has some cognitive challenges, and thought he was going to get punched so he preempted. My kid didn't want to fight, and was defending his friend and just blocked punches. 3rd kid got a stern talking to for causing the fight. 3rd kid is now at a different school, but not for this, but kid was a shit disturber.
My kid ended up with a playground rep for "defending his friend, beating up the other kid" for a short while.
Also, there were half a dozen parents within 20 feet that didn't even notice until I had grabbed both kids (K2 and mine) and hauled them off to the office.
It was a fun start to a grade 4 morning.

Morale of the story: send your kids to a self defense/martial arts school! ItÂ’s important that they stress the defense part - donÂ’t be a cocky shit going around picking fights, but be able to defend yourself or your friends if the shit goes down.
strike first, strike hard, no mercy!

3. I had multiple fights/fist fights through grade school, stood my ground each time

Seven current Toronto police officers and one retired member have been named as suspects in a complex conspiracy that allegedly involved the attempted murder of a senior Ontario corrections officer.
At least 19 additional suspects have also been charged following the seven-month investigation, dubbed Project South, which police say uncovered and ultimately thwarted the deadly attack at a home in York Region.

Legit question: What's the difference between a Land Rover and a Range Rover?
Land Rover is the brand and Range Rover is a product line, specifically their top of the line product though that has been diluted a bit with the RR Sport, the RR Velar and the RR Evoque so it's more of their luxury line while the Defender and Discovery are intended to be more accessible and more off road friendly.

Also Chinese, specifically Mainland Chinese tourists have for years been not well liked so a ton of the reputation probably comes from this. There aren't a ton of places in this world like Vancouver where if you asked what do I think of Chinese people do they have the knowledge and experience to think about it simply beyond Mainlanders, there's Hong Kongers, locally born in our case CBC's just to name a few.
I know IG and comment sections are far from reliable but anytime I come across Chinese Tourists not being in Japan posts the claims are the Japanese are absolutely loving it and the comment sections are 95% hate and racists towards Chinese. Plus the Chinese in a ton of media outlets regardless if you believe or not has always just been painted as shit anyway.

There already has been a mass exodus between 2020-2024. I went to the HK Museum of History (and Science, next building) in August. They had a whole exhibition on the protests with the view point of it destroying HK's economy, the chaos, and China #1. Here's some pics. They mark silencing the public as a "glorious moment of pride in history" - "Promulgation & Implementation of Hong Kong National Security Law" followed by "National Security Education Day of the HKSAR"

People took covid very seriously in HK due to previous experience with SARS, so the movement died during covid. The gov't underhandedly took advantage of the situation and made it harder and harder to protest, and some of the very high profile cases and crackdowns just at the end I think broke the will.
If you are in Richmond or Metrotown, you can see A LOT of recent immigrants from HK. They dress different, they talk different. I'm not sure how many of those are true immigrants or just non residents moving back. We know a few friends who had moved to HK for work who had moved back.
The typical choice it seems is to move to US/Canada as the No1 choice. Next is Australia/NZ, then Singapore, then Taiwan/Japan. For those who have parents with BNO, they have the option to move to the UK. It's not talked about much in the news, though you do see inklings of population decline in HK. The biggest signal is the RE crash. Prices are down at least 20% across the board. It's still expensive AF, but the crash has been noticeable as people sell and leave. It leaves a massive gap in the HK economy as people who have the ability to leave are the ones that made money and drove the economy. The trickle down of that income to the lower classes are noticable as the service economy has taken a hit.

The HK cafe/food stall is really the only cultural thing that's going to survive. No one speaks Canto outside of HK and the household and Mandarin is the lingua-franca here if you're Chinese presenting. I look nothing like a typical Chinese expat and people at food stalls greet me in Mandarin.

I heard cha don in Coquitlam is a bit meh. But doesn't help there isn't a good alternative so it's been busy.
I don't agree that mandarin is going to take over. I'm seeing a lot of canto speakers here and the amount of HKers around the world outside of HK probably number in the millions. Sure not quite the billion mainlanders there are but not all of the billion mainlanders speak mandarin either. There's also a sizable Shanghainese community around the world as outside of Canto/Mando, Shanghainese is probably the most common spoken dialect from my experience.

That definitely makes sense that there'd be some level of exodus of HKers in recent years.

Anecdotally, the most noticable resurgance of seeing Hong Kongers and hearing more Cantonese being spoken around the city started at around 2021 - 2022 for me at the start of the school year. I noticed it when I was dropping off and picking up my kid from school -- it was just the language being spoken by the parents, and my kid's school have also had to re-juggle their classes somewhat because of the increased student population.
Timeline-wise, recall that the massive anti-extradition (to China) protests took place between 2019 - 2020, with the heavy crack down taking place in mid (?) 2020. Since Hong Kong have always had a large Canadian expat population living there, many of them returned, esp those with young children.
As far as Cantonese' survivability overseas / outside of Hong Kong, I really don't know what to make of it. I consider myself a 1st gen immigrant to Canada since I came when I was relatively young (at elementary school age). My kid is totally fluent in (oral) Cantonese despite being born here bcos that's what we speak at home, but among my Cantonese-related friends, apparently that Cantonese fluency is a rarity among the children.
On the other hand, based purely on observation, it seems to me that regardless of whether they are born here or not, kids of Mainland Chinese descent are almost always fluent in both English and Mandarin. I have no doubt that this is likely due to the Mandarin-speaking parents poorer mastery of English, which forces these kids to speak, or at least use, Mandarin when interacting with their older family members.
I thoroughly resent the fact that the Communist Chinese gov continues to brainwash its citizens into believing that usage of any non-Mandarin Chinese languages and dialect is uncivilized, and it is extremely disappointing to see so many (Mainland Chinese) people buying into this stupid narrative to deliberately and systematically kill off other Chinese languages.

Same here, I'm going in Nov. and I'll use the money saved on the visa for a bunch of Luckin Coffee's
Yay, it’s official!
China’s Foreign Ministry says Canadians will no longer be required to get visas for 30-days stays, starting Tuesday until at least the end of this year.

It's kinda nuts how fast attitudes towards China travel has changed.
5 years ago if you wanted to go people would be like: "LOLZ Have Fun with Chyna Virus chump!"
Then you couldn't visit for like 3 years.
Even last year when I was asking around about the Visa application process I was getting responses on here like "Why would you go?" "You couldn't pay me to visit there"
Now it's like "omg that's amazing I'm at a very Chinese time in my life #Hotpot #BYD #DJI"

Personally, I still have no desire to visit lol. Would rather go to Japan, thanks.

I've been to Japan 3 times. It's like too sterile for me man. It's Asia with training wheels - nothing can go wrong everything is prepackaged and perfect for family consumption. China's big cities and major attractions are starting to look like that unfortunately.
Once Asians start to visit a place en masse it's done.

Well there goes $400 down the drain. At least I don't have to worry about denied boarding now.
On a side note, one could probably have seen this one coming. A lot of travel YTers suddenly all went to China the last few months. I'm guessing China tourism has been flagging and they are trying to boost it. Tourism in an economic sense is an export good, some of the bad will China has collected with their aggressive expansionist policies probably detered a lot of in Asia travelers and they need to fill in the gap.

I've only been twice and feel like there's still a million things for me to see and do there!

For me that's a part of the appeal - I don't want complications or things to go wrong and I don't want language to be too big a barrier especially as I'm travelling with a kid nowadays.
I'll save the more adventurous stuff till she's a teen or when she's out of the house.
On a tangent, I was saying to my wife that now that I'm 50 that it's likely I'll have about 20 years left of healthy living left where big vacations are feasible which probably means only 20-30 trips left (at the top end). That's not a lot of trips when I think of places I want to visit/re-visit:
Japan (3-4 times)
Europe (5-6 times)
South America (1-2 times)
Australia/NZ (2-3 times)
SE Asia/Polynesian (2-3 times)
That doesn't include my bucket list stuff like going to an F1 race or LeMans or seeing other big sporting events

Considering over 80% of the global population has never been on a plane, the above statement is funny to read

My son has a friend in school who's from Japan. We had a playdate and asked the parents if they ever would have grandparents visit. The dad said, his mom doesn't even have her passport, never got one and has no interest leaving Japan ever.

Your own mortality really starts coming into perspective by the time you hit 40 and 50.
You begin to count the summers left, the trips and vacations that you can still enjoy from a physical aspect, it's quite eye opening, and a little jarring, isn't it?
CivicBlues

Even more reason now to do challenging trips while you're young and 50 is still young! Japan will always be Japan, Europe will always be Europe. These places will stagnate as time goes on and become museum pieces. This is going to happen with most of East Asia and the West.

You listed like 17 once in a lifetime trips for most people
I don't know if that perspective helps with your feelings of mortality or not, but it stood out to me

Are they once in a lifetime though?
We've been to Japan 3 times already, going a 4th time in a few weeks. We are heading to Shanghai after that, 3rd time for me, but first time bringing the kids.
I've been to Europe twice, wife has been 3 times. Our last Europe trip imo WAS a once in a lifetime trip, doing a euro delivery with my M3. Been trying to do it again but it's a little hard with 2 kids.
We went to Australia for our honeymoon. It's pretty high on our list of places to revisit as it's safe imo to bring kids. I'm not as comfortable going say Vietnam with two young kids.

I've never been, if it's just the two of us fuck yeah we'd go. With two young kids I'd er on the side of caution. I'd have no problems going to Thailand or Malaysia though. I think I'd be much more comfortable if I've been and know what to expect.

I think the average Canadian couldn't afford to take 17 trips on the other side of the world over a decade, while obviously the average Revscener could

Traveling within North America honestly isn't all that cheaper unless you are talking about driving to Kelowna for a few days, and even then you are looking to spend a few grand between accommodations, food, and misc entrance and stuff. We don't have a ShenZhen to do cheap entertainment.

Unfortunately, this is arguably the weakest aspect of living a Canadian west coast life -- we don't have anywhere close or cheap that is easily within driving distance, so cheap travel is kind of out of the picture. Especially with the increased tensions with the US, road trips to the south have also become unfashionable and potentially troublesome.
With bcdukes and kryptonite being in Toronto, I'm sure they can relate -- there are literally tons of travel destinations that is within a 6-hours driving limit. Here, we have Victoria, Whistler, Kelowna / Okanaga, and Seattle. FailFish
