Has the quality of auto parts gone down since the pandemic?


Example #1:
I replaced a simple part, a fuel filter with a built in pressure regulator, with a Euro brand made in the EU. I started getting cold start issues, so I figured maybe the fuel pump was going too. Replaced the pump and still had cold start issues. I bit the bullet and bought a replacement fuel filter from another Euro brand and it seems to have fixed the problem.

Example #2:
I bought a new power steering reservoir and it leaked right out of the box.

Honestly if you haven't heard the album Folklore by Taylor swift you are missing out. Written with Aaron dessner from the national and Justin Vernon of bon iver. It's a fucking hammer of an album, and totally solidifies TS as a true talent that goes well beyond a pop star.
I wouldn't sit through a concert TBH because it isn't my thing beyond that album, but even the snobbiest of music snobs should appreciate her.

To be fair, our modern (western) world is riddled with this: Always be sad, depressed, angry, chock full of anxiety and no motivation, even though many of our lives are objectively good and better than generations before. Some pessimism and cynicism can be good for a defense mechanism to keep us grounded but for the most part, it's not as bad as 'AcAdEmIA' would have us believe. And once this bleeds into the arts on a wide scale, then it can have irreversible damage, especially on children who are still highly impressionable and easily influenced.

I've never listened to Taylor at all but once anyone (skilled or not) is in the realm of pop culture, I just can't take it seriously because pop culture is junk food for the brain. Call me old fashioned, but I like authentic music, not mass produced generic airwave filler that sounds 96% similar to the song that plays before and after it. Many artists have suffered when they move upward. Suddenly the dream they thought they had about making it big becomes a nightmare and you end up with tragedy after tragedy. The reality is when you make it big, it's not about the art the original artist but rather the that person is just a performer and everything else is done by a sophisticated team. Sounds nice right? Well the reality is that these teams are comprised mostly of parasites and leech off fresh faces. It's a horrendous experience. I read some info about Leonard Cohen. That poor guy was dealt many hard blows before he died. But more relevant, think about Avicii.


Pop culture is a very toxic environment and only made worse with the momentum in technology. It's going to be a much bigger revolving door. People like Taylor are 1%'ers. But eventually she'll be out and someone else will take her place. Brittney Spears was Taylor at one point in her life.

I get that I'm not the demographic for her stuff, but I can appreciate any music if it's good. This wasn't it. The album was just flat, no choruses, nothing you can really sing to.

Track after track of a billionaire crying about her supposedly sad life. It doesn't resonate with me.

I get teenage girls want to listen to all that crybaby sad stuff, I suppose that's why she's so lionized by them, but god damn what soapy basic music. I can't even imagine the vibe of listening to that auditory sleeping pill in a live arena music setting.

Her voice isn't even unique or powerful, it comes off very whiney and weak.

imo, Folklore wasn't a great album to start with.
The album came out shortly after the pandemic and was pretty much inspired by the depression caused by quarantine or whatever else was relatable with people during that time.

It's a bit bland and boring for my taste though, but I'm sure it hit the right spots for many people during 2020.

I enjoyed her early albums and also the more upbeat songs from albums 1989 and Lover.

I haven't heard her last 3 albums thoroughly though. Seems like she's been pumping them out fast and I couldn't keep up.

But that's the thing with Taylor Swift, she's not really boxed up into one genre. Every album, she seems to try something new with a different theme, so they can be hit or miss, or maybe nothing works for you. But she does offer variety and has never been stagnant in her direction of music.

The ways the industry has changed I don't think you can really compare people who were sensations in different eras. Not that long ago it was hear an artist every so often on the radio or TV, if you like them buy a CD or some merch if a store near you is selling it. Go to a show if they happen to be nearby. It needed to be made available to you, you needed to have the money to spend on it and you'd only buy each thing they put out once. Now anyone in the world who has an internet connection can be advertised to and listen to anything they want and endlessly send the artist listens/ad revenue 24/7, at no cost to themselves.

Getting there. And my parents aren't even that old. My mom is 62 and my dad is 70. Dad can't keep up with the current advance with AI stuff and in the last few months have put him in a really hard place where he can't tell what's real and what's not and since it's a video therefore it's real. Less political but rather he shows me videos and shit thinking fake stuff is real.

My mom has just become a safety and health nut. My wife is from Shanghai and we've been thinking about bringing the kids back to see her grandpa/kid's great grandpa and my mom is freaking out about the kids being kidnapped. My parents have been insufferable for the last 10 years, every time I see them or get off the phone with them I feel worse. Life is terrible, the world is horrible, health is horrible.

My parents live in another Province, I still make sure we talk at least a few times a week but seriously always bad news never anything positive, it's so miserable.

My mother is getting there, stemmed from health scares during the covid years that caused her to be paranoid about vaccines and general doctor recommendations presented in mainstream media. What's ironic is that my younger sister that lives with them is studying to become a doctor. Thankfully she isn't so far off and I can still talk to her on these topics in a civilized manner (for now).

My father is more trusting of doctor recommendations, but he's turning more disgruntled by all the social media content posted online regarding bad citizen behavior. Lately, he's fixated on dashcam videos and saying how dangerous it is to drive, and I have to remind him that a YT channel on dashcam videos will only show content involving crashes.

It's interesting (and worrying) to see them navigate the way around all this social media content - there's way more content compared to what they grew up with and they don't have enough experience to filter through what they're seeing and recognize each creator's biases.

It's one thing to follow the news, but it is an entirely different issue when you listen to these so-called content creators from online sources.

My dad has somehow picked up the (bad) habit of listening to a lot of dubious sources from YouTube, in addition to following traditional news sources. His excuse is -- he needs to get a balanced view on the issues at hand, but when I happened to be drop by their place, somehow I am always able to hear a lot of untruths and conspiracy theories that these so-called content creators are spewing. I had tried telling him how those are BS / fake news at first, but he just kind of defaults to acknowledging it and keeps listening, or uses his "balanced view" excuse again. I have since stopped trying to tell him not to listen to this BS since it is just wasted effort where I get myself all worked up.

During COVID, my mom would occasionally pass along these news with dubious claims to us as well. Fortunately, between the siblings, someone is always there to correct her or point out the fallacies, and she'd be OK with not believing it. But then when the next round of fake news comes, it's rinse and repeat again. At least we can keep her straight.

As you can probably tell, I squarely blame these garbage spewing content creators for spreading the lies that they do. It is one thing to be mis-informed, but it is entirely another issue when you repeatedly spew dis-information that is known to be false. It isn't even a matter of opinion -- it is factually incorrect stuff that they are spewing. It is infuriating because you can't shut them down as that'd be a violation on freedom of speech. But these fxxkers are clearly taking advantage of and abusing their right to the freedom of speech, and are mis-informing people.

But hey, that's what climate change deniers, anti-vax people, and conspiracy theorists are, right?

I try to teach my parents how the algorithm works with social media content, but it's not the easiest concept for them to grasp. My father's YouTube page is packed with dashcam crash videos, and the sheer volume of this type of content undoubtedly shaped his slanted thinking that driving is unsafe. Doesn't help that he's not a good driver which only amplifies his insecurities with driving overall.

The topic in my father's case is pretty harmless, but when you throw in more sensitive topics like politics and religion it can spiral pretty quickly.

My buddy purchased a complete VR Pinball machine a few months back that only had an issue with the software which he was able to fix easily, I think paid $700, the machine on the right. He's always Johnny on the spot with machines though so maybe it was a good deal he jumped on, he buys machines, fixes them for his personal collection all the time and when he gets bored with them he almost always makes money on them when he sells them.

Prior to C18, many media companies already had revenue deals in place with Meta and Google. So essentially, these companies were already doing what this law is now forcing them to do.

But Meta and Google want to do it by choice, not be legislated to take on uncapped liability. So that's why they are choosing to walk away from news content entirely. And they also cancelled all the existing revenue deals that were already in place.

So not only are media companies fucked because they've lost all the Meta traffic (and soon Google traffic probably), they also lost the revenue from the pre-existing deals. Double whammy.

If this doesn't resolve itself, some companies won't survive and people will lose jobs over it. And the gov't will blame Meta... but it's entirely the gov't's fault to begin with. Idiots.

According to Flip, it does. I wasn't convinced. Like In Mike we Trust, I also trust anything Flip says. Sure enough it works. I haven't had a mouse in the garage for as long as I've had those things in the garage. I've also had critters camping out in the engine of my truck. I'd disagree with the Atlantic's suggestion that China's debt-trap diplomacy has been debunked. It is very much still an attempt at debt-trap diplomacy by China. It's just that due to the nature of certain African country's inherent instability, China has at times been bitten by the very same country they try to debt-trap when the new strongman refuses to recognize the debt incurred by the previous administration.

The Atlantic is correct though, that it is something China has continued to expand, explore, and refine. And they have been getting better at it. On the other hand, as China's own economy is heading fast towards a down turn, they have had far less money dedicated to the BRI (Belt & Road Initiative) nowadays than before.

I wouldn't put my family at risk by going on the trip. It seems insensitive to go when there are folks fighting to keep their homes from burning into the ground.

I'd say just keep an eye on the situation expecting not to go and if it's a totally different circumstance come time (lots can change in 2 weeks) you can go with a pretty clear conscience.

I know of some extended family members who had to cancel their trip to Kelowna this month. One uncle is pissed that his son, my cousin, cannot get his AirBnB reservation fee back because he did not cancel his stay before the start date of being inside a host's home. The host is not replying to that cousin's messages, because, hey, guess what that host might have already left their home because of the risk of loss of life from the wildfires.

That uncle is now fretting about money being lost and not being able to take his grandson, a nephew to that cousin, to Kelowna. Uncle, his son, and nephew, and other family members were supposed to go to Kelowna to buy wine and do some wine tasting. Not anymore. LUL

I was thinking "really?" Complaining about someone losing money from AirBnB compared to the risk of endangering the lives of three generations of a family from really wanting to visit Kelowna. One of his family members that was supposed to go on the trip to Kelowna has asthma too. #Priorities

I just got back from Nelson yesterday. Left on Friday (before the travel restrictions), back yesterday. Friday the crater creek fire just started and we witnessed it beginning, but the wind was blowing south.

AQ got significantly worse on Saturday. We went from Belfour to Crawford Bay. It was not good. Sunday for our driveback, we went through Keremeos/Osoyoos and it is NOT a good look. The sky was thick with smoke, orange and dark. It does not give you a good feeling. If there are still active fires, I would not recommend it. It would probably be pretty terrifying for your kids tbh.

Tho if you are kidless/wifeless, I would reccommend going to Nelson.. those British women... #NBN. Or Revelstoke..

I've done the lysol thing and it worked once (out of two times) for me. I have an ozone machine that I got off Amazon that I'm going to use on my RDX this weekend as it has a bit of a musty smell to it that I can't seem to get rid of. You're welcome to borrow it - just hit me up on DM - much cheaper than taking it to a detail shop especially as you only need to run it for an hour.

Big ups to supafamous, went out of his way a bit ago to basically lend me a brand new ozone machine to use on my car.

I used it one night at my parents (needed an outlet to us it) and it worked so well I couldn't even take my car home after lol... had to let it air out overnight.

I feel like the smell in my vents on startup is almost completely gone. If I had a machine I would probably hit it again and do it with the car running and the vents on recirc to get more of the ozone into the ventilation system itself because I think I can still pick up the smallest trace right when the car first starts... but that's just learning how to use something.

It does a decent job, plus you get to go through another time if wash is not to your liking.

Daily driver that you aren't trying to get top dollar for on resale / isn't a garage queen = no problem for contact and non contact drive thru

Sportscar / or you really care about your vehicle that you are trying to keep in good exterior shape + nice rims + wide rims = no drive through carwash

Most of my cars including my ragtops, I put through the contact and non contact washes - no problems

C7 gets self serve coin bay, spray only, 2 new disposable rags, brush on rims only (I'm in a condo, no hose access)

Bottom line, if you care how your paint looks long term you're not using a public carwash with brushes. Silver will hide it better but under the right light you're going to see the scratches and swirls sooner than later especially if you're going weekly. Darker paints it's going to be even worse.

Don't judge a carwash by the expensive cars you see going though it, these people either don't give a shit or it's a lease and who cares it's going back after 3-4 years.

So yeah, if it's a daily and you just want it to look clean from 10 feet away go ahead. If you want the paint to look great 5+ years down the road go with touchless and then hand wash it a handful of times a year. I've had my black 2014 F150 since new and it looks better than most trucks that are only a couple years old.

I've spent probably hundreds of hours on car detailing sites over the years and probably thousands on car care products over the last 20 years. I don't have the time that I used to to detail my vehicles like when I was younger but the knowledge is still there lol.

Is there anything like free geek anymore?

I need just a basic display port cable from monitor to dock, I’d rather just grab a used cable for a buck or two rather than buy a brand new cable for $10+ seems so wasteful when I’m sure there are millions just laying around

The wife dug out some headphones from the old iPhone 4-5 boxes she found while cleaning up the house. I remember when they used to supply those (and also a power brick) while the phones were like 600-700 dollars.

To be fair, I feel like I have so many of those wall chargers I don't know what to do with them all. So I don't personally miss them in new devices. Apple cords are nice to have a few extra but those micro usb ... coming out of my ears.

Most of the spare wall chargers I have are the old style 500mA ones, which aren't really good for anything. I only have a couple fast chargers.

Getting excited for Halloween!


Speaking of Halloween, I was on I-5 last week when I saw this car with the coolest antenna topper. It was a zombie (maybe skeleton) with arms that flapped in all directions as the car went down the road. I so want one. Anyone seen something like this? I searched the Internet high and low.

I'm sad about August wrapping up so quickly too. And we were just dealing with 30ºC weather 2 weeks ago.

And I am honestly really super extremely grateful that the on and off rain has returned. I know we desperately, desperately need it, and it is also good that it isn't the constant heavy rain that would lead to flooding. But selfishly speaking, I also know how much I want to be able to drive the fun car in some nice weather.

Before we know it, it'll be October and it's time to park the fun car for another season...

My fun car almost made it through the entire season without getting exposed to any wet weather. Meanwhile my beater has been sitting on the street for months, covered in dust. Hopefully the rain helped clean it up a bit, and hope it runs again in October!
