Nothing better when you let a Chinese driver merge into your lane, or merge in front in general, and they proceed to not give you a single look of acknowledgement or thank you, then proceed to drive 20KMs below speed limit now in front of you.
The one that happens to me a lot is where I'm driving along and there's nobody in sight behind me, someone will punch it to pull out in front and cut me off, then proceed to drive below the limit. If they're not in a rush then just wait the 3 second to pull out behind me.

I hate this obsession with being the 1st person in their given lane when approaching a light, even when they plan to drive fucking slow up front anyways.
I notice people doing a lot more now in specifically in Vancouver. People doing the above, but while they're at a complete stop in their lane, meanwhile vehicles are still approaching the stop in the lane beside them, and they attempt to make a lane change to get that "first spot" from a complete standstill.
That shit is becoming fucking stressful, I always feel on edge when I'm approaching a red light with no one in front of me, expecting some asshole who decides in their own infinite wisdom to suddenly change lanes while fully stopped in their lane just to nab that front light spot in the adjacent, while I'm approaching.
It's such a stupid maneuver for literally no gain or benefit.

There's preactions that happen and you can tell from the language of the car, the car model helps the prediction too.

The latest thing triggering me while I'm driving are the folks that leave +2 car lengths in front of them at a light. I'm not talking about 2nd car hanging back to trigger the advance green, but stopping going straight.
I think it lines up with ICBC supposedly finding someone in the middle of a chain rear-end crash liable for not leaving enough room to the car in front when someone was going +80 and hit them. So now they stop all the time expecting Speed Racer to hit them.
In my view, it's exacerbating the traffic gridlock with all the vehicles on the road now.
Is just leaving enough room to see the rear tires of the car in front of you not a thing anymore?

The problem with that is if they are that fucking stupid they will never put it together that they are doing something stupid. Flash your brights, honk, yell, usually the only reaction is to stare straight ahead and have no idea what's happening, or they start road raging.

While we're on a roll: it grinds my gears when it's dark out, I'm at an intersection, and I'm face to face with someone who's obliviously left their high beams on. I flash my high beams, no response. I turn on and leave on my high beams, no response. Then I sit there epilepsically jamming on my brights, and still no response: they notice nothing.
Why would anyone even want to be first at an intersection and risk coming face to face with bozos like this?

I do. A couple times when I'm in the lane beside them I've pulled into the dead space. I'm usually in my Odyssey so I'm about the size of a Tahoe. That should tell you how much space they've transferred from between their ears to the road.

I've said this before in other threads, some of the blame goes to the auto manufacturers for Auto Everything Controls and the lack of indicators to know when things are on.
My '23 Odyssey has auto High Beams, that I've turned off, but you know what turns the feature back on? USING THE HIGH BEAMS to flash at the guy across the intersection that has their high beams on. So now i have to try to remember how to flash my high beams to turn off the auto beams. I'll wait till I'm in my driveway to do it. but there's been a few times late at night when it'll kick in because there's no oncoming traffic for a couple hundred metres.

not exactly the same but one time the guy at the front was so far off the sensor that a guy came out of his house to yell at him lol.
i was about 7th in line and was kinda zoned out listening to the radio so it took me a while to realize that we hadn't moved in like 3 minutes. i looked behind me and i saw an endless line of cars had formed and i started to realize something was wrong. i waited for another minute or so and then i see a guy come out of his house who lived at the corner of the intersection walk with an incredulous look on his face as he hit the crosswalk button. he looks at the guy in the front and goes "are you fucking retarded?? do you not know how a sensor works? MOVE UP". the driver was like 2 full car lengths behind the stop line. i can't remember all the things he said to him but he went off on the guy for a bit lol. well deserved.

I stopped honking after one time, I was behind a guy turning left on green (non arrow) and he wouldn't go, despite a completely empty oncoming lane. So I gave a quick tap honk, in case he wasn't paying attention.
Dude opens the passenger window, slides over to that seat, and starts yelling at me, shaking his fist out the window. As he's doing this, his car is rolling into the oncoming lane, and now there's traffic coming. Oh BTW he has 2 kids in the back seat. He quickly jumped back into the driver seat and sped off, barely avoiding getting hit.
In America you don't honk because you might get shot. In Vancouver you don't do it because the person will lose their mind and maybe get themselves or their children killed.

Does it rub anyone else the wrong way when you go to a restaurant as a group, some as small as 6, most others, 8 ... they automatically put a 20% tips or surcharge? We're talking not particularly fancy, like an avg sushi/Japanese place.
What is the thinking behind this ... that you will usually stay a bit longer to chat and therefore, waiter/waitress will have less opportunity to make more tips on tables that turn over more quickly? Or, is it because once 6 or 8 people start drinking, they have a higher potential to act like losers and a-holes? Honestly, my crowd of 6 or 8 doesn't act any differently than 2 tables of 3 or 2 tables of 4.

I'm honestly a little torn about the whole tipping thing. On one hand I have parents who both worked in the service industry so tipping well is the norm, on top of that a lot of ppl in the service industry is having a hard time with inflation and restaurants not doing well.
On the other hand, I'm just as broke as fuck as everyone else and sometimes going out is already a splurge and a treat. A 20% defacto tip is just brutal. 20% tip used to be for a job well done and this feels like the ol' 'everyone's a winner' attitude but I'm losing.

My favourite honking gone wrong incident still has to be the time I watched the car in front of me honk an unmarked Crown Vic outside the Brighton Costco for not immediately moving the instant the light turned green.
It was winter and all three cars were waiting on the hill to uphill to Lougheed. The light changes and the Vic doesn't move for 0.5 seconds. It's winter and the road was icy and slick so the smart thing to do would be to not jump on the gas. The 2nd car just lays on the horn because the Vic didn't get on the gas the second the light changed.
This was a old school Crown Vic, with steel rims and the strobes visible in the rear windows. You knew it was a cop car a mile away.
Watching the driver get his ass chewed out by a cop, with 2 other cops covering and staring them down with their hands on the butt of their pistols was priceless.

The mentality on this is you would not fucking believe how many people in large groups decide "everyone else tipped so I'm not going to, and back when splitting bills wasn't overly common because people still paid cash, someone would just decide not to pay because everyone else's tip covered their meal.
That said I still wish we'd just be able to pay more money to staff, charge more money on the menu, and get rid of tipping BUT because the average person isn't able to do math, that sticker shock of seeing the price on the menu instead of the non tip inclusive price, people decide you are too expensive before considering what they are actually spending at the other place. It all makes sense but it's hard to implement.
FYI though, if you have a legitimate concern about service, no good restaurant will say you have to pay that autograt. That said, we can tell if it's legitimate or not.

This makes hella total sense, I've been out for group meals with some of these mathematically challenged folks. They are embarassing and I end up putting more in after they do their imbecile math.
Back 20 yrs ago, 10, 12, 15 % was the range for tipping. 10% is typical and 15% was good. 20% is exceptional. Since tipping culture is a percentage of the final bill (and meal prices have already experienced inflation) I feel like the increase to 15, 20, 30% of the final bill (I've seen suggested on machines) is like excessive. 15% is now the floor. And I'm expected to tip on the total bill which conveniently includes GST! I wonder if in ON, people tip based on the meal+HST (13%) total? Tips and taxes can end up being like 30-40% of the bill! No wonder reports are out that restaurants are not doing well, it's gotten so expensive all around.

Yeah I think the new baselines are getting ridiculous, BUT people still have the choice to hit custom amount, and they tend to act like they don't, but I do see the idea of being offended when your first option is a 20% expectation.
18-20 is my usual, but the whole tips at the liquor store kind of thing are crazy to me. Like, you just stood at the till and didn't even say hi to me, why would I give you 15-25% of the product I picked, carried, walked with, then carried to my car? You didn't even touch it or acknowledge I'm a person?
To change tipping culture there will have to be some sort of rules involved or it's not gonna happen, because like I said, math is too hard for 90% of people out there and the place that offers "cheaper" prices will benefit. It's all mind games at this point.
I totally believe there should be servers making 6 figures, and they should be the best ones at the best restaurants, and earn that job through skills and experience that show value to an employer just like everywhere else, but we are kinda stuck, and I'm not willing to be the canary in the coal mine to make it work when my mortgage payment hinges on the outcome.

My favourite tip machine is the one at Bourbon Chicken in Richmond Centre food court... those old asian ladies know what's up... they make it so you have to fight through their menu system to find the custom amount to make it no tip, but the press enter and speed through to pay option is 5% so it's like under $1 and literally everyone just pushes enter to accept it and get through because the amount is so small. They're probably raking it in on a days transactions lol

I really don't honk very often, maybe once every 4 or 5 years. I had a situation a month ago, I'm in a parking lot driving behind a very slow moving car like idling speed so I'm like this is weird but OK. I'll admit I didn't give it a little honk I held that horn down for a good 5 seconds. Then I get the middle finger from the driver and the newly acquired passenger. What I don't understand is how can anyone be that obtuse? I'm so aware if I'm stopping in a lane, if someone is behind me I'm going to pull into a parking spot or if I'm trying to figure out what I'm going I'm going to make sure I'm not in someones way but there are so many people who DGAF.

I always wonder if they even get those tips or if the company just keeps it. In the US a lady once told me not to bother because she doesn't get it. I'm more likely to tip at a one-off place but the big chains really need to just pay their employees. And when I see a place that doesn't even have a tip prompt I'm more likely to keep going there just because it's less b/s, even if the food isn't anything special.

My bro got a CR-V Hybrid as he moved to Seattle from NYC and now needs a car. That 204hp combined system power is barely adequate for merging on the USA interstate for 2 guys in it... can't imagine when it's fully loaded. USA interstates are no joke lol.I went to Portland one year in the car pictured in my avatar, packing a whole 140hp. I had already bought my 330ci but the civic felt like the safer choice. Man I should have taken the 330ci. That said, I remember even on the way to ridge, that thing barely had enough horsepower (225hp) to get around US Interstates. I was constantly getting blocked by prius's. Anyway, I digress.
In the 140hp civic, I got merged into by a old Landcruiser. I honked and flipped him off (through the sunroof). I was 18 and very dumb. Anyway, the guy begins to chase me and this 140hp econobox couldn't outrun a old Landcruiser. My friend's in their s2ks and ITRs had to zoom up as "backup" to get the guy to piss off.
Now all of my friends have FK8s, 35i/M3s or FD2s. We don't worry about that kind of stuff anymore. I think the minimum HP required is around 240whp - a FD2 with FBO. I had a blast driving that back from Ridge and there was definitely no concern for a lack of power to merge or overtake. Hell I even almost caught a speeding ticket in the FK8, but the cop pulled over my other buddy in his FK8 lol.

i found the reverse. Most people just hang out in the slow lane (better lane discipline than canada for sure) going 65-70mph.
I just set my cruise to 70mph and zone out. I hate the i5. its sooooo boring and everything about it sucks till you reach oregon. Even then it still sucks till you reach ashland where it gets twisty into Norcal.

New Prius felt quick enough up to 145kmh or so ... the 110-140 passing power seems pretty good. I think it has 190hp or so?
It wouldn't make cars disappear in the rearview like the Mustang/Charger do but I felt confident.

Everyone zooming are almost always BC plates.
I also notice in the US there are a lot more 'shitty cars'; I get wage disparity and that Vancouver is a bit of an outlier, but the number of 20+ year old Altimas with broken taillights is quite high on the I5.

It's because in the US, especially in suburbia and rural areas you NEED to have a car. Whereas poor people in Vancouver get by on transit, if you want to live you need to drive in most of the states.

Nah, it's mostly WA + OR plates recently. Not a lot of BC plates, too expensive to go down now.
There's a lot more shitty cars in the USA because 1. Nissan finances anyone with a pulse, and these guys don't take care of their cars 2. You NEED a car, no matter how shitty.

The 3 things I notice most when driving the I-5 in Washington or Oregon.
1. Subarus - Like WTF? The minute you cross the border to Washington these things are fucking everywhere, from Crosstreks to Foresters and all the in-between. It's bizarre.
2. Hoopty Cars - It's rare to actually see a beater in Vancouver, you see a ton once you cross over. From shitty beaten old 90's/2000s cars, to vehicles with lots of bodywork issues requiring repairs, you'll see them down there.
3. The lack of Teslas - Sure, you see em', but not to the absurd level you see them in Vancouver.
Goes back to what I was saying, you notice how Vancouver is such a weird fishbowl of wealth once you leave the damn place.

We were in Portland with my M3 back in 2019. If we lived there I would not have bought a M3 the roads were brutal and the F80's suspension isn't even that stiff.
That said, we saw a SLAMMED, and I mean almost dragging frame low, Ford Fusion while I was there. They mod everything and anything down there. If it's got 4 wheels and it moves it'll get slammed.
I sold a car to a guy in Toronto
I'm guessing I fill out the ICBC Transfer / Tax form and then mail that with the signed and torn off registration paper to the seller?

I thought I'd witnessed the best drivers in the world on the German Autobahn, but for me, it has actually turned out to be the brazen fucks behind the wheel of random old momentum-cars on the highways of LA.
Every time I'm down there I am in incredulous awe as I'm just driving along minding my own business and these nondescript nothing-special beat up sedans hurl themselves across 6 lanes of traffic in swift, decisive motions. It seems analogous to watching clearly advanced skiers cut around the learners on the bunny hill: it's totally wrong, but they're going fast enough and with enough skill to just slalom through, and nobody gets hurt lol.
I find myself actually driving as if I were on a bike, drawing on motorcycle training classes from back at PRS: planning my moves several steps in advance, visualizing everyone's blindspots, thinking about my escape routes, watching other cars for their tells, picking my lane positioning and trying to be ultra-predictable. Changing lanes by doing quick blasts into fleeting gaps, rather than attempting to signal and waiting for kindness to come (LOL). It's a whole other level down there!
I just save my horn for special occasions now where someone almost causes an accident or a little courtesy tap when someone isn't paying attention at a green light.
They should really start doing a dedicated courtesy tap button, or at least standardize how horn buttons work.
Seems like every model of car has a different implementation of the horn button. Sometimes a progressive series of whacks of the steering wheel gets the desired effect. But sometimes, it'll be either nothing at all, or a very long loud blast of "ohhh fuck now I'm gonna get shot, help me jebus."

1. Lol Subarus, actually cant say for anything, maybe they are cheaper comparatively?
2. Yea, transit is even more of a joke in the states if you are not in the larger cities, so if you have to... you just have a running car... that's it
3. Tesla is considered entry luxury in Vancouver, due to cheaper gasoline + more expensive electricity + cheaper gasoline cars in general. The same math in Vancouver where it is cheaper to run a base model 3 VS mid level Camry/Accord doesnt work in the USA. You are buying a Tesla cuz you are buying a Tesla, not because you are figuring its cheaper to run compared to a Honda Accord

I'm using a Weber Kettle right now and I smoke ribs and turkeys on it - it's a fair bit of work to keep it around the right temp. My turkey this Xmas was a big hit and I love smoking stuff so I wanna get something that's easier to manage and which lets me do bigger cooks.
The Camp Chef XXL looks really promising: https://www.campchef.com/cc-vertical-pellet-grills-xxl-pro/xxl-pro-vertical-smoker/CC-PGSBXXL.html?utm_source=Ran&utm_medium=affiliates&utm_campaign=Smoked+BBQ+Source&utm_content=1&ranMID=44242&ranEAID=1ONGcqPK*aA&ranSiteID=1ONGcqPK.aA-Cv17P1uI6axrvCwoQNLXvA

If you guys want a challenge, try building an old box to play old games that won't run on the new stuff. It's oddly challenging finding bits that still work, and then trying to make those bits work together, then finding the drivers

Lousy kids nowadays are bitching about an IOS update
Ah the days of having to go through the Control Panel and Device Manager to install that one finicky driver for the random card board component that wouldn't read based on the driver's executable install.
Kids won't know about spending a whole afternoon fucking with random drivers just so your damn system can finally recognize the stupid component sitting with a "!" in your Device Manager.
Or formatting and then having that very specific ethernet card driver that you had to obtain off the manufacturing website because the older driver on your disk no longer worked. Then you're going to someone else's house with a floppy to use their internet to get the damn driver.
Or you downloaded the x32 drivers when you needed the x64 version, so start again dumb fuck.
Those were the days.

The days of having to point Windows to the driver file because it won't automatically pick it up.
Then the stupidity of having to show all files because Windows defaults to only showing you a different format.
Being a highschool kid and having to trial and error. And because you got it working now you have to go figure it out for all your friends.
Also if the driver fits on your floppy. If it does fit then you are fucked.

so im trying to eat less meat for 2024. Today i went full on vegetarian and got some indian food. Shashee paneer, garlic naan, vegetarian pakoras, etc. Indian food is the only food thats edible for vegetarians because they fry/sauce everything so delicious that you cant even tell the difference.
Is there any other vegetarian place that's good? If i steam some bak choy and eat it, i think ill die. Chinese vegetarian is terrible. Maybe ill make a mah po tofu tomorrow w/ a lot of garlic and chilis and some vegan/imitation meat.
Ill still eat fish, because fuck fish. They have no feelings and they arent cute.

For Vegetarian, Heirloom on Granville and 12th is the bomb or to me, the benchmark. Mid to higher level price.
There are a few casual level ones on Main: Meet on Main, Chickpea, or Arbor/Acorn (same owner apparently but one is more casual, one a bit more high end)
Do Chay Vietnamese on Kingsway or Chau Express (Granville Island and Victoria Street).
Try some of these and give us your review. I've been to all of the above and they are all worth a visit. I was pleasantly surprised how tasty vegetarian meals can be !!

I agree, lily-white people and Chinese can't do vegetarian food unless you're paying out the wazoo for some high-end chef to come up with something. And even then, mixed results. Nothing beats centuries of cultural practice due to religious prohibition and/or crushing poverty.

+1 to Chau Express on Victoria and to Do Chay (bit pricey for what it is though).
Are you trying to eat less meat for health reasons? I just got my annual blood test results back and have my call with the doc tomorrow - my cholesterol is a bit high but not so high that if I would just exercise regularly that it'd be a non-problem. I also know people who have dropped a lot of carbs and increased their red meat consumption and it has helped their cholesterol numbers.

If it's for health just know that eating the same food but with no meat isn't going to change anything ... Deep fried junk food with greasy sauce dumped all over it is the same with or without some chunks of beef or lamb in it!
If it's for flavor reasons, there's some yummy veggie food out there, like civicblues said. You just have to get food from the cultures that were forced to eat that way for one reason or another.

Pan fry the bok choy. Add garlic, onion, sriracha and peanut butter. Bam. Not lame.
were veg. some of our fav places are do chay on kingsway/knight, meet on main, chau veggie on victoria (kinda salty tho), sun bo kong on kingsway, shizen-ya on broadway, and some others. we mostly cook at home though.
we also cook mapo tofu somewhat regularly in our rotation, we don't use fake meat in it, we just dice up a lot of shitake mushrooms and pan fry them first, set them aside, then re-add them later. tastes pretty good.

Correct. If you're vegetarian + fish technically that's pescatarian.
I find vegetarian food pretty good, but a good chunk of my family is vegetarian so I'm fairly used to it. Vegan doesn't sound that different but it ends up being a lot more restrictive on your diet. We had to eliminate dairy and eggs for a bit and it was hell. Vegan "cheese" is borderline inedible.

I gave them some veggy pakora yesterday and they spat it out. Not a big fan of the paneer either.
technically ya vegetarian means dairy is still fine, and vegan means nothing animal based whatsoever.
i consider myself veg but i still eat fish to some extent, like i will eat kimchi without caring that theres fish sauce or shrimp in it, and sometimes on vacation if i dont have many options i'll eat some fish, but at home i never do. i find that its easier when you don't make the rules so rigid for yourself. nobodys gonna do an annual check of your diet and take your vegetarian certificate away if you don't stick to the definition of it.
my gf is vegan but she consumes honey a lot, so even she doesn't really care about being totally by the book.
i saw a stand up comedian on tiktok that was like, 'im vegetarian because although i dont like eating animals, i dont mind if they have a job'. lol

we have 3 cats, one of which my gf brought into the relationship. she started feeding her a vegan diet for the first year that i disapproved of, and eventually she came around and fed the cat a carnivore diet. i think its important to make sure your diet decisions only affect yourself and not others, especially other species that literally need meat to survive.

Okay, question for your electrical geniuses.
I live in a townhouse / row house here in the GTA. There's about 5 of us connected to I think the same electrical feed or whatever it's called.
Once in a while, the whole house loses power and trips the main breaker. None of the other breakers trip. This will happen randomly throughout the year.
We called in our friendly electrician and he's come over to help us troubleshoot using all his fancy tools and with us loading up the outlets and appliances etc and it doesn't come close to tripping the main breaker or any appliances. There are some random times throughout the year where power will go out for a split second and recover immediately, but these are rare.
We suspected it was the dryer but we replaced it a number of years ago but it's still happening. About a month ago, it happened while we were just watching TV and then poof, the entire house lost power.
Before we call the hydro company, anything else we can try or troubleshoot ourselves?

Tripping your main sounds like it’s current coming IN tripping it, not anything within your house. Like does this happen when a bunch of shit is on or has it happened when there hasn’t been much of a load going on within your home?
Does this happen to your neighbours?

I'm not an electrician but for a given amount of power drawn (watts) if your voltage decreases the current will increase. So say you're running 1200W worth of stuff, at 120V that's pulling 10A. If the power drops to 100V it'll pull 12A. If you're getting lots of brown outs the increase in current draw might be tripping the breaker, but that seems weird unless maybe the breaker itself is defective?

Hers isn't tooooo terrible she just seems to get insanely tired and can't keep her eyes open if she eats any wheat products and if she eats a bunch at once somehow she has pretty bad intestinal issues.

Breakers can and do go bad, there's nothing special about a main breaker over a individual circuit breaker other than the higher current rating.
Also check the main feeder wires to the panel that they're properly secured and torqued down on the lugs.
Sorry Honda, there's no such thing as a "current coming in" problem.
The house loads will draw the current they want to draw.
The utility can't "push more current" down the line without cranking the supply voltage up to levels that would kill every electrical device in a house far before the main breaker ever tripped.

So this is where it gets weird - it happens when nothing is drawing major current (i.e. only laptop/modem/lights are running) or when the dryer is running and we are cooking something using the stove or oven. It's very random.
Does this happen to our neighbours - We're not sure. We've never had a chance to ask them because it happens so infrequently and we forget about it a few days later when we see them. I'll have to be vigilant to ask them about it next time. The last time it happened, it happened three times in a row when nothing major was drawing any power.

Things aren't always steady state. Once things have been running for awhile, it can warm up and draw more current. I had my power washer hooked up to an extension that was rated at 10A without really thinking about. It tripped it a few times before I doubled checked that the garage has a 15A plug and grabbed a higher rated extension. It would trip the 10A cord after it's warmed up from extended use and always after I've held the trigger for awhile and never right when I squeeze the trigger and the washer starts up, you'd think it draws more at start up but it didn't.
Was in the area, so went into Hard Rock Casino. Turns out it isn't a Hard Rock anymore. Gone are the neat memorabilia. It's now just Great Canadian Casino. I haven't stepped in the place for nearly two years. Entrance to parking lot has changed, so I had to go in via the street we used to street race on.
Speaking of street racing days, I drove down (literally) memory lane a few weeks ago. My daughter asked me if I could pick up some items from https://vfdfood.com on the way back from the US. I'll have you guys know I was the guy who found that street racing location. Port Kells was getting too stupid back in the day when all them high schoolers started coming out. Anyway, Glouchester Industrial Estates. Such great memories.

...
It would trip the 10A cord after it's warmed up from extended use
very good point. breakers tripping often we look at the load being exceeded, but another way to look at it is an increase in temperature (for whatever reason) as a reason to trip and protect the system.

I have an old car and I have a bunch of devices hardwired to the fuse box. Like dashcam, backup cam, mini sub, etc. It's pretty cluttered in there with all the fuse taps. I read that using wire (T) taps, you can share multiple devices in one fuse.
Anyone know if this is ok? Like adding power for the devices with a T tap on one of the fuse taps?

Living in Vancouver it's a must IMO.

I agree that it's a must. Even if you don't want to put any effort into doing a good install -- hiding your wires, hooking the power up to the fusebox, etc. it is easy enough to just get a 1-channel something that plugs into the 12V outlet.
For my family, it has helped us 3 or 4 times in dealing with ICBC. Video evidence (of this sort) doesn't lie, so it just makes the claiming process that much more straightforward. I have also used it a number of times to help the random motorist when I witnessed an accident.

I just picked up the VIOFO A229 Plus Duo. 2K front and back. It uses the newer STARVIS 2 sensors.
I'm not a fan of 70mai. Their hardwire kits don't let you adjust the voltage cutoff and they're set lower than 12V, making it hard to start the car. My MIL's car ran out of juice several times and she drives daily.
How many of you guys run front facing cams on your dash?

Absolute must. I have dashcams in both cars in the fam and it saved us from several hit-and-runs while our cars were parked. Made resolving accidents very quick and efficient, including one where someone was using a false witness. And it also helped us even in one incident where someone changed lanes without looking and my wife had to steer into a curb to avoid an accident, only to destroy our own tire. No actual collision and of course the other car was oblivious and long gone, but we were able to make a claim given we caught the plate and we have evidence of the incident. We were able to get a new tire covered.
How many of you guys run front facing cams on your dash?
Am I an idiot for not bothering all these years?
Ever since Operation Revnose all those years ago, I decided I have to get with the times. I wish they had Dashcams back when I went on the 4-1/2 week road trip across North America.
It has saved me and other drivers multiple times. Everything from witnessing other drivers getting hit while parked to dump trucks dropping their entire load of dirt, rocks, and boulders in front of me on Hwy1 going at 110 kph. Driver didn’t secure rear gate. Sent it in to ICBC.
I have two Thinkware dual dashcams with extra mounts so I can easily switch between the cars. I have them hard wired and on an independent switch. I have 256 gb cards (12) of them, that I rotate and reformat after a week or so. A couple of close red light infractions where I have definitive proof that I was in the right or wrong. In case I get a red light camera ticket in the mail.
Combined with my Drone Mobile alarm, I’ve busted thieves attempting to break into my car. Time and date stamps, ftw! Speed indicator, kind of. Another feature I like, but don’t use that often is the Thinkware app where you can see where you are on a map while watching the footage. Oh yeah, the speed and red light camera warnings. Has saved me countless times. My Escort radar detector does all that, but it’s still good to have both working.
Forgot another one. Because the dashcam has built in WiFi, I can change settings on the fly and review footage on my phone to prove to dip shit who hit me, I have proof.

Can't really go wrong with Thinkware, VIOFO, and Blackvue. Blackboxmycar imo is the best to go to and they also have a shit ton of youtube videos doing in depoth reviews. Start here

Personally I run a BlackVue DR900X-2CH Plus Dual-Channel for my car and my wife runs the older model. Thankfully I've never had to use it for myself but I did witness an accident once and sent the video to ICBC which helped someone I'm sure. If and when I have to buy one again though I may go VIOFO though, it's a little bit cheaper and the video quality seems to be a bit better too but we're almost splitting hairs between all the major brands really.

Submitting video to icbc via their online witness form was super simple. Last summer witnessed a left turner getting hit by the oncoming car that ran a solid red. No one was injured at the scene but I couldn't stay as I was on my way to a medical appointment

I've been called up twice. First time didn't get selected, Judge recalled everyone fo the following month that didn't get selected for the one trial that day. Next month, we all show up and a Bailiff goes, "WTF are you guys doing here? Didn't anyone tell you there's no trials today?" What a waste of everyone's time.
In November I got called for a 3 week trial. Got excused due to a family emergency. Just filled the online forms. Not like the old days when you had to show up. My mom had to do that just to say, she didn't understand English well enough to follow a trial.

So where I work you get full pay if you get called, a colleague of mine just did it for 2.5 weeks, sounds like a total fucking shit show
It was an ICBC civil claim that has been going on since before they went to no fault. The fucking trial took 10 days and then deliberation took 3 because 1 person was adamant she couldn’t understand why the rest of the jury wanted to vote one way. My colleague said people were basically ready to start screaming at her to just side with the other 7 people and eventually when they told the judge the scenario the judge said majority is good enough, case closed.
Sounds like a total nightmare to be a part of

Having only ever used Blackvue (3 so far) I have nothing to compare to. In my opinion it's just ok but maybe all dashcam software is just ok or shit. I went as a normal person who uses tech and software in my daily life like anyone else and had certain expectations of how the software would work. Everything to how easy it was to connect, speed, usability etc and like I said the user experience is just ok my biggest pain point usually is connecting and staying connected to the camera and then even after that sometimes it's slow. Again maybe they're all kind of like that but I have no idea.

The biggest problem with Thinkware is that it doesn't have a "video preview" so if you're looking for a specific clip and your time stamp is wrong you end up spending a while trying to find the right clip. Also, some Thinkware's don't come with built in GPS so that makes it even more annoying for automatic time correction.

Blackvue definitely can be buggy. For the premium price tag they seem to have over other dashcams, I probably wouldn't buy them again. My wife and I are both using Blackvue's and so are 2 other friends and we all ran into issues.
For the most part, they do their job and work well, but the one my wife has would sometimes just randomly restart itself mid commute, so we'll be unable to record for about 20-30 seconds as it reboots itself. And mine is starting to produce weird purple/rainbow colours in the footage at random times. Also the time stamps and date always seem to go off after a while.
But I'm also not really a "bells and whistles" kind of guy. I still prefer to just pull out the microSD and plug it in the PC so I can review the footage on a large monitor. So if you don't care about the cloud storage or better app, then it makes it harder to justify the price.
---
I would recommend people to youtube the channels that review different dashcams and compare the driving footage comparison during day and night to narrow down which one to choose from. Sometimes the expensive ones don't actually have as good video quality. But they have more features instead, if that's what you prefer.

Yeah the shortage was caused by Huy Fong trying to strong arm the farm that supplied the Chilis for their sriracha, underwood ranches.
Underwood ranches told them to fuck themselves so Huy Fong needed to find a new source or to farm the Chilis themselves. I think they decided to have their own farms now.

I still have little bit of a bottle of the OG Huy Fong from late 2022 that I was able to compare back to back with the new Huy Fong stuff I just picked up.
Yes, the colour of the old stuff is slightly deeper red, a little bit thicker consistency, and tastes ever so slightly "richer". Some of that could also be attributed to the fact that old stuff had some oxidation/aging in the bottle since it is nearly a year old (and I don't store it in the fridge)
But it's totally passable and if I didn't have the back to back test I would never be able to tell it's any different.
