The term in her native language is considered racist, so not sure how her not being proficient English is relevant.
If I'm in china and call someone there a racist slur in English, my lack of understanding of Chinese isn't relevant. Also how are they nickel and diming them lol. Did they give her a bill for coming into the store?

^ so this is all interesting to me as I learned something new about the Chinese language just a few hours ago while picking my daughter up from guitar lessons.

Another dad, also Caucasian, was speaking Chinese to his son and the boy’s teacher commented that it must’ve been a hard language to learn. For me, knowing that English is very difficult compared to other languages to learn, I eavesdropped more than I normally would.

The dad said that the hardest part was understanding that the language is more tonal and that the same word can have a completely different meaning depending on how you say it in terms of inflection. I’m not sure if he was speaking Mandarin or Cantonese, but I guess my question is, can gwailo be used as a derogatory term as well as more of a neutral description for a white person or even perhaps in a different light?

My best bud since 1989 when he moved here from HK has called me gwailo more than once. Mostly when he’s been mad so if there might be a chance it could also be a term of endearment, I’d like to tell him that I know each time he’s called me a gwailo it just means he loves me. That would piss him off so good :lol

“Gwai Lo” is a Cantonese term, literally meaning “ghost guy”. I would classify it as a slang/borderline-derogatory term to describe a Caucasian. The more polite term would be “sai yan”, which means “western person”.

But then with most languages, there are so many nuances involved… you could use gwai Lo to insult a stranger, but it could also be seen as a term of endearment in a twisted way in punkwax’s case :lol

Just like the N word. When a brotha calls another brotha N ...it's a term of brotherly love. But if a white guy uses it, racist ...except when the two are best buds.

Read the story.

No one was going on a racist rant at the Shaw store. It was an old Chinese lady that used the ambiguous term "gwailo" instead of the more polite term while speaking Cantonese to her son-in-law when he asked who helped her the other day.

It's basically analogous to if some old white guy is asked "who helped you?, and he said, "oh that Oriental fellow here yesterday". Is it racist? No, just horribly out of date but no malice was involved.

Maybe I don't got no feelings lol, but seems like people nowadays get butthurt or "offended" quite easily over a word or something someone said? Then it makes the news, how is this even news worthy article.....There was never a bad intent with what the mother said (could be all she knew to describe Caucasian).

Gweilo = "Whitey" in English and along the lines of Negro, Oriental, maybe even Chinaman. Of course this is not a perfect analogy but I would say it's more accurate than Gweilo being analogous to "N*gger" or "Ch*nk"

I remember being in Shanghai for 6hrs during a layover, I decided to take the maglev in, and a cab back to the airport

Poked around the city for an hour, had a senior guy point at me and laugh, followed by a shivering action from him. Then we both nodded and laughed (I was wearing shorts, and it was like 10C at the time, he was in full winter gear)

So I hop into a random cab, the male driver in his 40s is all cheery happy to see a white guy, doesn't speak any English, all good of course

Then about 1 minute after we start driving, he calls up his homie on facetime, on the highway, and starts chatting, laughing every couple of words, then it gets strange... He would move the phone from himself, over to me, several times (so he could show his friend I was in the car?) followed by severe laughing
I don't understand a word of what happened, except the four or five times guilo came out of his mouth howling with his buddy

This was like 5 years ago, I didn't care, nor did I know, I found the entire scenario extremely amusing and confusing

Today, it's a conversation starter, worth a laugh

Maybe someone from china can explain this 5 year mystery

whitev70r
01-25-2022, 05:55 PM

We don’t prevent it, as you can’t really make the choice for someone not to be racist, but it’s quite literally one of the most demonized acts in Canada by normal people at the moment, as it should be. There’s no place for racism from anyone.
Imagine this was some old white dude referring to an employee as a chinaman. It would be top story on every news outlet in BC and you’d have people calling for jail time.
Again, it’s nowhere near the N-word, as it doesn’t come with the relation to centuries of oppression, slavery, etc. I’m not gonna cry about it if someone calls me a gwailo. I just don’t care, but being asked to leave the store was hardly an overreaction.
Honestly, I’m white devil, so I have no idea what it’s like to experience real racism, but at least the people I associate with would not tolerate racism against someone if we saw it.

Before COVID I went to the east side culture crawl and saw some nice stuff, but besides that event I have no idea how I'd be able to get access to that kind of original artwork normally.

Thanks

I ventured into the topic after getting my house and TBH, I think it's robbery in plain daylight for the price that they are offering.

So, unless there's anything/anyone in particular that you are looking for, I'd suggest going to places such as Emily Carr, where they have an annual Student Art Sale or any local Art exhibition where the intention is not really about selling, but simply a way for new artists to show their work.

Find an artist you like, and get in touch with them. I'm actually in the process of commissioning a painting from an Emily Carr graduate. We discussed what I wanted, she visited our place and is now working on it.

Culture crawl used to be a spot to find some value with original art but as HeHE said it’s gotten kinda crazy

I’ve actually tried to bargain with a few artists I really liked as I loved the work but just couldn’t afford the price. My reasoning is if I can pay 75% of the asking price and tell anyone who comes into my home about you and your work, it adds a bit more value to your work than grinding a price for 2 years until someone grabs it and forgets who you are. The argument doesn’t work very well lol

I have two commissioned peices that I love and I hit a real sweet spot with because now the same artists are charging triple or more for similar peices. Emily carr is probably a good place to start to find some value

On the top right corner with the stamp. Does it say letter mail? Personalized mail?
Personalized mail doesn't get returned back to sender. They only pay for one way postage. So if it's that, it goes in the trash and the sender probably send you another one without updating their database.

If you're not picky, have you looked at the used market ala FB marketplace and the like? I find that patio furniture is one of those things that lots of people buy new, then find they don't use it at all and just dump for a fraction of their original cost.

Whatever you do, don't buy that cheap Ikea set. Thing will list 2 years tops, not to mention the chair is super uncomfortable

Photo taken from our kitchen window. Not sure who's responsible if it's the city because it's high up near the power lines, property owner, or if it's us because it's overhanging our property.

I know the City of Burnaby website says the property owner has to maintain the tree, but just wanted to confirm because I've read conflicting experiences.

Any part of the tree that's on your property is your responsibility.

The city told me to hire a contractor to cut off the branches.

That’s right – under civil law you have the right to remove branches that ‘trespass’ over your property if you wish, but it is not the responsibility of the owner of the tree to make sure that his tree is not growing over your property.

The Trudeau's must be the third and forth top Prime Ministers in history to increase Canada's debt causing inflation and basically a nations servitude to transatlantic Anglo Zionists (They back both sides of the great wars and created the majority of pandemics).

We must be over 50 billion a year in debt interest alone. But now that people are making moves theyre propping up that dweeb as a new Prime minister.
Unfortunately Canadians are too dumb to see that hes just another Ron Paul pressure relief valve and false hope Obama meat puppet.

If by the smallest of chances the Convoys power becomes great and smart, it should nationalize oil and diamonds first then wait for an American occupation and see how long that would last. Maybe Russia and China would aid in help over time.

My wedding is coming up a in a couple months. I'm trying to get a Tuxedo & suits for my groomsmen. Groomsmen will be rentals; however, for my Tuxedo, I'm not sure if I want to rent or fork out the money. I went to Moores on the weekend and they said it won't be 100% fitted due to it being a rental. If I get a custom Tux, it starts at $500, and then it'll increase if you start tacking on things like custom designed inner lining material etc. Rental is $250 and custom one is $500.

I went to Bello wedding where my fiance is renting her dress to check their Tux, it was more fitted to my body; however, there is only one option to choose from in terms of styling as their shop is catered to wedding dresses mainly. Rental is $250. I like their fit, but don't quite really like the styling.

Is there any other good places I should consider looking at? Part of me I would like to rent due to I won't use a Tux in my day to day attire (save the few hundred bucks), but at the same time, the wedding day is about me and I should look the damn best. Not sure what I should do....

I rented mine from Debonair (part of Bridal Gallery, new west). Our wedding was suuper small so no groomsmen, so I was apprehensive going in because I thought they'd just shrug me off. Not so, they were very helpful with minor fitting/alterations provided, etc., and they had quite a selection. I think all in all I paid ~$200 and I rented literally everything except underwear.

Also..........yes your wedding is about both you guys, but I guarantee you as long as you don't go below a certain threshold nobody will give a shit about how you look.

unless they changed their stuff, bello is essentially a dress store, the stuff for guys is really to put you in a suit as background decoration for the girl, the options for suites: a black and a white :lol

i was surprised at the selection/service at the moores dt store on granville...my buddy rented from there and i was a groomsmen many moons ago.

the tux store by hemlock & 6th ave has a lot of selections & options. they use to suit up hockey players for award shows iirc.

unless you have a unique body type i think the temp alterations are fine. try stuff on see what you like. i think prices range $250-500 as well at both, can go higher if you want to dress up like mr peanut.

congrats & good luck in your search.

Perhaps someone with even a hint of optimism in their life might say they're teaching kids the difference between right and wrong and how to stand up for what they believe in?

Is there an age requirement for protesting? Do they check ID to verify it when you protest? Is it more okay to run over an adult than a kid? BTW you can't legally block the police from going about their duty so yah, that would be really irresponsible to throw your kid in front of a police convoy.

Has anyone been to an all inclusive in Mexico?

We're looking at at all inclusive in Cabos San Lucas. Seems to be about $2300 all in for a 4.5* and seven days. Direct flight, hotel, etc. I've never done all inclusive before, anything I should look out for?

It’s very hard to take reviews seriously because people will slam an all inclusive for the dumbest shit. Read through a tonne of reviews on multiple sources like google, trip advisor etc. and then make your decision based on that.

Personally I hate Cabo. I’ve been there twice once to San Jose Del Cabo and then once at the Riu closer to downtown Cabo San Lucas. That whole area I find just stifling in terms of that endless, relentless sales pitch/hustling bullshit. I feel like I’ve never really experienced true Mexico as in areas outside of resorts etc. but Mexico as a whole kind of gives me a vibe I don’t really enjoy.

When you’re looking at 4.5/5 star resorts the differentiating factor is the food. You can go to one resort that’s a 4.5 star and the food is “good” and you’ll pay 2500-3000 a person. Then you look at some of the 5 star resorts and they are like 4000 a person, look pretty much the same, but the food will be very good. In that $2300 price range I’d probably just try to go to the newest resort possible.

Btw, almost every resort on the sea of Cortez side you won’t be swimming in the ocean unless you’re a very strong swimmer. Basically you have to dive into the rip and swim passed it in order to swim in the ocean. If you are unsure whether you’re a strong swimmer, you’re not. Lol

I’m going to Playa in March, we’ll see how it goes. Might be my last jaunt to Mexico lol

Rent an Airbnb man, way better. But if it's you're first time, try to stick with 4 stars or more. $2300 per person with flight is somewhat high, what time of year are you booking?

I've only been to one, but the main things I noticed were 1) take a good look at what is and isn't included, 2) if you book an excursion, whatever they're telling you about it isn't accurate. That's roughly what you'll be doing, but the info the person you talk to has is off by a bit.

We're choosing Cabo because it's a short direct 4h20m flight and we'll be travelling with a two year old, so we want the flight direct and we want it shorter. Because of the kid, we're likely not going off the resort at all.

$2300 per is the minimum for the 4.5/5* places, we are looking at either end of August or October.

It's just to recharge because we want a second baby, so we want one vacation before we have to go through war again...

Prices for all inclusive are crazy right now.

My buddies and I went to Cabo and stayed at the Riu in 2013 for like $1200 all in for everything. Now the cheapest all inclusive is like $2000+

It's pretty convenient, my street is right in the middle of two major bus routes direct to downtown.

The drive from my house wouldn't be bad, I live in the Glanford/Carey area.

But monthly parking doesn't exist right now, they're not even taking waitlists. So it's standard day parking at $12 a day, and it's pretty full up.

We were at an all-inclusive at Puerto Vallarta (Hyatt Ziva), and both the wife and I loved it. 6 nights and I think we ate all but 3 meals in-resort. But check the fine print - for ours, room service, the 24/7 cafe, drinks service on the beach, and everything else to eat on the resort was included, including all but the most extravagant alcohols. Neither of us drink a lot, so that wasn't a huge deal.

During lunch I ordered a coke, and the waiter looks genuinely confused as he asked me "But sir! Why the hell would you want a coke, when you get a coke and RUM??"

Now, that said, during dinner the waiter asked if we wanted the lobster special, which wasn't on the menu. We said sure, and it was fucking delicious. Until we got the $120 USD bill...because it wasn't on the menu...lol. But no regrets, would recommend IF the food they serve has enough variety. Hyatt Ziva had 6 different restaurants on resort I think.

We went to the other side, Playa Del Carmen last time. One recommendation I'd make to people go there you'll fly into Cancun, book a private van to pick you up at airport and take you back there at the end of the trip. I think it cost me around $100 total, well worth, didn't have to go on the bus and stop at every resort as they are dropping people off.

If you're going to go into town in that area stay in the tourist areas, it's pretty sketch outside IMO. I thought it would be smart to walk to the Walmart with my then 12-year-old son and wife, super sketchy not sure how we didn't get robbed. If I go again I'm not leaving the resort.

As far as East vs West coast, who swims in the ocean anyway? All that matters is the pool and the temperature as far as I'm concerned. Next trip I'm going Cabo side for the shorter flight.

I don't think it matters where you go in Mexico you're going to have people trying to sell you time shares, I got a call first morning there at 7am which was like 4am for me because of time zone I was pissed I told the guy to go fuck himself and not call me again and he didn't. 99% of Mexico isn't like that. Go outside of the resorts but to tourist places like Mexico City, Puebla, Oaxaca, Merida, Campeche it's chill as fuck and not scammy at all. I haven't been to any of those areas so you're probably right on with those areas, I know the area I was walking around wasn't nice lol.

I think if you do the all-inclusive which is what most people who go do you're going to have to deal with the timeshare thing at some point, it's not that big of a deal just a nuisance, like who's going to sit through a presentation on their vacation? That question is rhetorical, a lot do but I'm not doing it no way no how.

Outside the all-inclusive I'm sure is a different story. The physiotherapist I see goes with her girlfriend and they don't do the all-inclusive thing, they rent a house and they love it.

That said, been to Cancun a few times and both times going to the actual city of Cancun and losing track of time / being there trying to get back to a place where taxis or buses are running with night falling, it was a very very different vibe... people freezing up when they spot you while they size you up and definitely got that feeling that it was best to keep moving and gtfo.

But no one did anything, the only time I was nervous was when we drove through a Millitary Checkpoint and there was a soldier manning an APC but they just waved us thru. Maybe they would have stopped us if we were Gringos *shrugs*. Maybe it would be a really bad idea to drive through the border states like where the Cartels are but the Yucatan Peninsula was just fine.

We left from Cancun and stopped along small towns as we visited the Mayan Ruins. As much as I enjoyed the Resort and doing nothing the food was so much better (and cheaper) once we drove inland. The people can mostly only speak Spanish for the most part but were so curious and friendly it was like being back in SE Asia.

99% of Mexico isn't like that. Go outside of the resorts but to tourist places like Mexico City, Puebla, Oaxaca, Merida, Campeche it's chill as fuck and not scammy at all. Mexico is one of my favorite countries to visit and it's a shame most people only experience it through the tourist beach resorts.

Agreed. Went to Mexico City before covid and never felt unsafe walking around the city. Had some of the best tacos as well. Would love to go back at some point.

After dark is the worst time to do it. If someone is going to drive down, its best to have a mini caravan of a few vehicles with them and travel only during daylight hours.
The border cities aren't really that great either. Think of Port Kells. Just warehouses and strip malls. And a lot of fucking dogs.

A lot of people I watch on YouTube, some who are essentially life long Travellers who do nothing else all seem to love Mexico and have it right up there with their favourite countries

I’ve been 4 times all to resorts and I just don’t think I care enough to discover the “real” Mexico. I have very little interest in that or South America etc. unfortunately with these North American vacation schedules, if I’m going to be taking 3/4/5 weeks off for sonthing, I’m going to go to Europe. Never been to South East Asia but that will likely come after I tire of Europe which may be never lol..

One thing I’d say I know I’d enjoy is the cost of travelling those countries and even Mexico. There is definitely an aspect of increasing enjoyment when you’re literally never thinking about what things cost. That’s why I very much dislike travelling the UK because things cost so fucking much without the reward of those sky high prices you get in a place like Switzerland.

I know people loveeeee London, but for me, $13-$15 for a beer to suck back exhaust fumes all day? Ehh I’ve had my fill

Swimming in the ocean is the best part, anytime I'm in Mexico we barely use the pool, pretty much beach hopping daily.

I've never had problems driving in Mexico. Driven through the Mayan Riviera, all the way down from Cancun to Bacarlar numerous times. It's all safe, if anything I've felt more sketched out in cities in the States TBH.

Also driven throughout the state of Jalisco, to Tequila, Boca De Tomatlan, Manzanillo, Sayulita, etc. Driving is a little different on the Mayan Riviera side, as there are frequent police road check points, just drive through, you're fine.

I'll never understand why people have this misunderstanding of the dangers (or lack there of) of Mexico.

Next trip down there might try driving from Mexico City > Acapulco. Haven't been there yet.

We're going to Cabo in May for a quick week trip for my birthday, first time heading to that area of Mexico. I have a feeling it won't be my vibe (the Vegas of Mexico), but the GF has never done an all-inclusive before, so alas.

For anyone looking to get their hands on an Arcade1Up scaled arcade cabinet, this is a hot deal. Reviews seem like it's the right product, so hoping it ships.

https://www.wayfair.ca/furniture/pdp/arcade-1up-mortal-kombat-midway-legacy-ljhy1107.html

These can be modded with a Raspberry Pi (and some other stuff) to run MAME, CPS2/CPS3, NeoGeo, etc.

The control deck on this has a non-traditional layout unlike in Japanese cabinets, so you will likely want to replace it with something custom and then throw in some Sanwa or HAPP buttons/sticks.

EDIT: Sold out

Would you guys feel liable or guilty, if you sold a local cash deal item to a buyer, and it turns out not compatible or defective doesn't work. I sold a brand new sealed item, buyer complains it's not working afterwards. Is it my fault? I'm not a store, nor did I mislead the buyer in any way shape or form. Literally a grab and jet deal transaction. He could have tested before buying, which I would been fine with. My perspective is, all private cash sale deals are final sale once we walk away. Now if I said it's new perfectly working and it ends up not, then that's on me, but it's brand new sealed in box, I wouldn't know. Just one of those situations.....

You don't know what he did with it after he opened it or if he swapped yours with one he had that was defective. In this case I don't think you should feel bad, just bad luck for him. If you're really feeling bad you could provide him a receipt at most so he can have help to return it or something similar to that, but that's about it.

Regardless if the item was sealed or not, if I'm buying something from a private seller I ask to verify that works (if that means unsealing it, so be it). If he didn't ask you to do that, that's kind of on him. But I agree with 68Style, karma matters. Unless the guy was a total dick, and you could tell that it wasn't broken from abuse by him, I'd probably try to help him out.

I've never been ID in my entire life shopping at the liquor store. Today first I went with Fiance to liquor store to pick up some wine, they asked for our ID. My Fiance didn't bring her wallet with her today (no ID), so I told them she's helping me carry the wine and that I'm the one buying. They insisted that's the rule, both need to show ID.

Then I said what difference does it make that if both of us leave the store, I come back in myself, and buy those exact bottles myself alone. They said they still wouldn't sell to me because there is presumption I'm buying for someone underage.

I literally bitched at the manager, fucking idiot. It makes no difference I leave the store, come back an hour later "ALONE" and buy those wine myself. I asked how I can purchase the wine, he told me I need to leave and go shopping, then come back. Like WTF? I ripped him and called this is bullshit, then he told me to leave LOL. I'm wearing a fucking mask, how can anyone tell that ID is that person truly. It's literally stupid.

It's bullshit because 3 different employees tried to help us when we were browsing the store, even the manager himself. Then when we got to cashier it was ID rule in place. If we didn't look of age, then why even start offering service to us to get sales?

The stupid part was the cashier said once we buy more than one bottle of wine, we ask for ID (we had 4 bottles). So if we had one, that's okay you don't ask for ID? None of their words align as well, the supervisor came over and he said in theory I could walk out, and come back in alone to buy these if I wanted. Manager then says ID or no alcohol.

You're right, the underaged or shady person stays outside the store waiting and not go in (if they aren't of age). So why would I bring my fiance into the store if she's not of age. We've come to age where need ID this and that, it's rather annoying when you can't even go out without ID.

They helped you because they hadn't ask for ID yet, which doesn't happen until you get to the cashier.

What the cashier is saying is maybe their general rule/personal rule for when to ask for ID, they have the right to ask for ID no matter how few or many bottles you buy.

We don't know the age of your fiance, so maybe provide some proof here?

It sounds like you should start a protest about removing IDing when purchasing alcohol. Ottawa is a good place to start for that.

They will charge, some of them were like 17% or something. Crazy.

I used it once. It was shit, granted my car is on the bigger side (Hyundai Palisade). The back was dirtier than when it went in, and there was a line of soap. Which is weird, because it's the exact system as the Shell on Mcbride/8th, and that one cleans my car rather well. Also the attendant working there looked like he couldn't graduate kindergarten, when i went back in to complain he stood there and nodded, and after like 10 seconds of silence he's like sorry there's nothing I can do.

Also
Now at Shell, CAA, BCAA and AMA Members save 3 cents per litre on fuel*, 10% off car wash†*, and 10% off in-store purchases†*.

So I'm looking to get in on that Shell wash when my Husky runs out. But McBride is a bit of a trek from Richmond lol

It's a YMMV, it's the same system, and like I said, my car is on the bigger side of things so probably plays a big role. I tried the wash on Lougheed/North Road the other day and the entire thing was covered in soap when it ended. Had to pay more to rinse it off after.

I guess next question would be, you guys also use capital cost alliance claims? I had no idea what this was, and still don't understand the calculations. But story cut short, this saved me 4500$ last year on a single property alone.

You either use it today, or you can use it in the future. Money today > money tomorrow.

Not sure if DIY is for me, there's way too much shit going on. On BPforums everyone seems to be on the page of using a CPA without question

Thanks for replies regardless

Capital Cost Allowance is simply CRA’s predetermined rate of depreciation for certain asset types.

Outside of the tax purposes, people may depreciate an asset using their own calculations. CRA has set predetermined rates to mitigate abuse of depreciation rates by taxpayers.

Sometimes it's just easier to pay someone to do it for you. At the end of the day, people can learn how to do a lot of things, it's whether you have the time and patience to do it.

I do my taxes every year and I hate it, but i'm too cheap to let someone else do it for me. I have rental income, a couple small businesses, and it's just mundane work that I hate doing. It's relatively easy, but I still dread it every year..

I fly planes and that's incredibly unlikely, planes don't just leak fuel for obvious fire safety reasons. Could more likely be a psychological association with engine noises?

That said, my sense of smell is weak as shit too so can't say definitively lol

While walking my dog on our daily route, we came across brand new car parts for a 5th gen Celica, and a torn open box from RockAuto. First a radiator hose was found, then another several metres away, and finally a thermostat another several metres away. I'm guessing FedEx dropped the box off at the door step of the appropriate location, but someone decided to steal the box thinking there could be something of value inside? Then just ditched the items while leaving the area? Must have happen last night as everything was a bit damp from the rain. So, I decided to do a good deed for the day!

I looked up the address stated on the FedEx waybill sticker and while walking to the house, I also found the packing slip. I then returned the package to a female relative of the parts owner who answered the door. I also called the phone number listed on the waybill and notified the rightful owner via voicemail as the owner did not answer my call. Nevertheless, if you are on Revscene, I hope you enjoy your newly found parts!

Sweet car by the way.

Depending on the value, might not even be worth doing all the manual work yourself. I buy from Alibaba, I normally tell the supplier to declare a low value on the shipment so I pay less duties/taxes. Physical size the biggest is a size of printer paper box I've gotten, although in terms of value, I've done over $1K spending.

Has anyone of you guys done a wedding without a DJ? Or gone to a wedding without one? I'm not even sure how I would coordinate music at my wedding, as I haven't decided if I want to drop money on a DJ. I would need to find a friend to just play the music off a laptop during the wedding if I choose not to spend money on one; however, I feel that strips away their attention to enjoying the wedding.

I just put on a 90s rap playlist and we were good. You should make a playlist beforehand or get a friend to make one for you. Once the music starts, after at least the first dance, there's no real reason to turn it off, unless you do speeches, so it's not like it would be constant attention, just a few minutes on the hour to turn off and on.

Depends on how much DJs cost nowadays, i would consider it. My wedding was destination so i didnt have a choice, i had to make pre make my playlist and tell my buddy who was mc what playlists/songs to put on at which times. Had a song/s for the bridal party entering the reception and maybe another song for the bride and groom. Dinner music playlist, song for the first dance, garter toss, bouquet toss, playlist for dancing. I remember i made the playlist for that and i screwed up cause the transition between songs wasnt smooth so the people dancing would kinda stop when songs would change

My friends wedding had no DJ and it worked fine, it all depends on how you want your wedding to go. Sometimes it's nice to have an experienced MC/DJ running around coordinating stuff, but if your wedding isn't overly complicated that's less of an issue.

The main thing is to test/run through everything beforehand (fading in/out etc) and leading up to the ceremony have some kind of background music playing. My friends had a big bluetooth speaker that went into sleep mode right before the brides music was about to start. Overall just a minor hiccup that didn't matter but for other people that might be a big deal.

Don't do a wedding without a DJ. You are going to spend all that money on a wedding and skip the $1000 or so on a DJ?

Who is going to do the announcements? Who is going to be able to run the mics without feed back? Who is going to find that one track your wife and her maid of honor listened to a 1000 times when they where 14? What if the father changes his mind last minute and wants to do a father daughter dance. The maid of honor says they will just dance to the next song is. What she does not know is the next song is Sexual Healing by Marvin Gaye.

Know one is going to care if you have one less appetizer or you sent a little less on decorations but if the musics sucks guests will leave early.

We did a wedding without a DJ. We curated a bunch of songs for the banquet, and hired a harpist for the ceremony. The venue had the mic and speakers setup already so we asked one of the groomsmen to deal with the AV stuff.

Wife had minor regrets not having a dancefloor, but we would have all of 10 ppl dancing and we had a hard cap on end time.

Brother had a wedding during covid. No DJ. Loaded songs on a phone, made a playlist. Plugged into the venue audio system through aux. It was perfect. Switched to a light playlist during dinner time. Played their first dance song from it etc. Venue gave me the mic and showed me where volume controls where. I ran it no problemo. Why waste 1k if it's unnecessary. Load up some good tracks and let Er rip. It will be fine.

Since weddings are the topic in the past few posts I got a question of my own.

wedding day + limo's

Just about every company I've talked to so far says that their limo's are rented on a 4 hour minimum charge. I don't need a limo for 4 hours or can't think of any reason why anyone would need one for that long. All the weddings I've been to in the past where I've been part of the wedding party only involved a ride from the hotel/house to venue with maybe a pit stop somewhere in between to slam a beer. An hour tops.

Is there a company that any of you know of or have used in the past that went per hour without a 4 hour minimum?

68style
03-16-2022, 12:44 PM
^ I can't speak for the weddings you've been to, but most the ones I have been to the wedding party or just bride/bridesmaids arrives at the ceremony in a limo... and then departs to go take photos somewhere in said limo and it becomes the base of operations during photos... then they get dropped off at the reception.

So 4+ hours is pretty norm I think?

stewie
03-16-2022, 01:09 PM
All the ones I've been part of the party were at locations such as stanley park rose garden, queen elizabeth, at lakes, and up in semi remote locations where there's a background that's overlooking mountains or the ocean. All of them were pick up and drop off, photos were all taken at the location where the ceremony is since they've picked that venue for a specific reason.

It's pretty easy to fill up 4 hours especially if your home or hotel is far from the venue and you want to drop by places to take pictures. Having a limo for taking pictures in DT would be great cause you don't waste time finding parking for 2 cars, or more if you have a largish wedding party with you.

In hindsight we would probably have benefitted from a limo because we lived in Burnaby (didn't book a hotel), venue was at UBC, and we took pictures in DT. Also stopped for a quick bite in between. Yeah it was a few hundred more but we probably could have gotten more done.

Check out this story from NEWS 1130: https://vancouver.citynews.ca/2022/03/17/b-c-youth-in-care-homelessness/

Some good news from our BC government in terms of helping youth at risk of being homeless.

My tax dollars are being put to good use to help people. :considered:

B.C. is detailing exactly where $633 million in funding for former youth in care will go, as part of a cross-government approach to target the root causes of homelessness.

Several cabinet ministers gathered for a news conference to share details of money first announced in Budget 2022 for supports over three years for people experiencing homelessness.

Mitzi Dean, minister of children and family development, says $35 million over three years will help former youth in care, almost half of whom experience homelessness at some point in their lives.

That includes one year unconditional income supplements of $1,250 a month plus a no limit earnings exemption for young people so that they have an incentive to work into build that independence themselves, and expanded medical and health benefits,” Dean said Thursday.,

Other funds to help the homeless outlined by the ministers include $164 million to expand the government’s complex-care housing program and $264 million for a permanent housing plan to support about 3,000 people who were temporarily housed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Maybe my math sucks and it's Friday LOL but how did you get $80K commission?

$700K per 3 months. That's $2.8M per year, seller & buyer each would get $40K a pop per seller agent & buyer agent, isn't that the math?

westopher
03-18-2022, 09:41 AM

It's 7% on the first $100k and 2.5% on every $100k after that... and they split it with the other agent if there is one or keep it all if there's not. Sometimes they don't split it 50/50 but it's close.

So yes, a $700k condo would pay out $22,000 in commission... so ~$11,000 each agent.

Condos you need to sell more... but I mean... how many $3-4M houses are changing hands in the lower mainland each day? Does someone throwing up a listing and photos and then picking from a group of 10 bidders the day it goes up for sale deserve half of a $92,000 pay day (assuming a $3.5M sale)? You could literally make 6 figures just selling or repping the buyers of 2-3 pretty average homes in Vancouver a year.
