Aaron Hernandez officially charged with the murder of his friend

Former New England Patriot Hernandez charged with murder - CNN.com (http://www.cnn.com/2013/06/26/justice/nfl-hernandez/index.html?hpt=hp_t2)

North Attleborough, Massachusetts (CNN) -- Authorities charged former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez with first-degree murder on Wednesday, hours after police arrested him and the NFL team that once gave him a $40 million contract dropped him from their roster.
Hernandez is accused in last week's shooting death of Odin Lloyd, whose body was found in an industrial park area less than a mile from Hernandez's home.
Hernandez "drove the victim to the remote spot, and then he orchestrated his execution," First Assistant District Attorney Bill McCauley said in court Wednesday.
"He orchestrated the crime from the beginning, he took steps to conceal and destroy evidence and he took steps to prevent the police from speaking to ... an important witness," the prosecutor said.
A judge ordered that Hernandez be held without bail.

Defense attorney Michael Fee had said that the evidence is circumstantial and that bail should be granted so that Hernandez can return home to spend time with his fiancee and 8-month-old child.
"It is a circumstantial case. It is not a strong case," Fee said, arguing that Hernandez was not a flight risk and had cooperated with authorities.
Lloyd's family tearfully watched during Wednesday's hearing. They did not speak to reporters after leaving the courthouse.
Hernandez, 23, wore a white T-shirt when he appeared in court. He stood beside his attorney, his hands cuffed.
After the court hearing, Fee said Hernandez is "doing fine."
A gag order issued during the hearing stopped attorneys from providing additional details afterward.
The Patriots released Hernandez Wednesday after he was arrested and booked at a police station in North Attleborough.
Prosecutor: Surveillance footage shows Hernandez with gun
After days of secrecy in the closely watched investigation, the prosecutor's comments in court provided the first detailed account of Lloyd's killing and the evidence detectives have uncovered.
A jogger found Lloyd's body, riddled with gunshot wounds, in a secluded area of an industrial park near Hernandez's house June 17, McCauley said.
Investigators later found five shell casings at the scene. Inside his pocket, McCauley said, they found a wallet and keys to a car that Hernandez had rented.
Around 2:30 a.m. that same day, the prosecutor said, Lloyd was last seen leaving his Boston home with Hernandez in a silver Nissan Altima.
Less than an hour later, surveillance cameras at the North Attleborough industrial park showed the vehicle heading toward the remote area where Lloyd's body was later found, McCauley said.
"The car goes down there at 3:22," McCauley said. "Four minutes later, the car is visible again. During the interval between 3:23 and 3:27, people who were working the overnight shift hear gunshots."
Minutes later, surveillance video from Hernandez's home security system shows the former NFL player arriving back at his house with two other people, according to the district attorney. Hernandez appears to be holding a firearm, McCauley said.
"The defendant goes walking through the house with the gun in his hand. That is captured in the video. ... And they all go down to the basement," McCauley said. "Once in the basement, the surveillance gets shut off."
McCauley said the gun Hernandez was carrying in the surveillance video has not been found.
Investigation continues
For the past several days, investigators have been searching the area near Hernandez's home as they have investigated Lloyd's death. Authorities Wednesday said the investigation was ongoing.
In addition to the first-degree murder charge, Hernandez faces five weapons-related charges, including carrying a firearm without a license.
It was unclear whether there had been any additional arrests in the case.
"One critical part of this case that we don't know anything about at this point is the two other men (Hernandez is) accused of being with," CNN senior legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin said. "Were they shooters? Were they involved? Will they flip against Hernandez? They are obviously key figures in this, and we'll watch how that unfolds."
In court on Wednesday, the prosecutor described what he alleged was a tense conversation between Hernandez and Lloyd inside the Nissan Altima and described what Hernandez and his associates had done at the scene of the shooting. He did not reveal how investigators had learned that information.
Inside the car, according to McCauley, Hernandez told Lloyd he was mad because of Lloyd's behavior at a Boston club they had gone to together several days earlier.
"There were certain things that had happened during the night that he was upset about and now didn't trust the victim," McCauley said. "He told him one of the things he was made about. ... At the club the victim had spoken to a couple of people, and the defendant told him that he was upset about that because he had some troubles with those people."
Victim's family reacts
Lloyd's sister, Olivia Thibou, told CNN last week that her brother and Hernandez went to a Boston nightclub together a few days before Lloyd's death.
Her brother was dating the sister of Hernandez's fiancee, she said.
She said she didn't know of any problems between Hernandez and her brother, who worked for a landscaping company.
Before Wednesday's hearing, Thibou said she was glad to hear about Hernandez's arrest.
"God is great," she said. "It's the best news I've had since my brother was killed last week."
House searched again
Patriots drop Hernandez
The Patriots -- who gave Hernandez a five-year, $40 million contract last year -- released Hernandez from the team before the charges against him were made public Wednesday.
"Words cannot express the disappointment we feel knowing that one of our players was arrested as a result of this investigation," the team said in a statement.
The NFL released its own statement, calling the involvement of a player in the case "deeply troubling."
Both the NFL and Patriots expressed sympathy for the victim's family.
Hernandez's lawyer broke his silence Monday, saying his client has been subjected to "a relentless flood of rumors, misinformation and false reports," including unsubstantiated accounts in some media outlets late last week that an arrest warrant had been issued in connection with the investigation.
On Wednesday, about a half-dozen plainclothes police officers went to Hernandez's house and then led him out in handcuffs. He was wearing a white T-shirt and shorts.
Death inquiry, silence from player and cops
Sheriff: Gang unit will investigate Hernandez's tattoos
Bristol County Sheriff Tom Hodgson said he expects life behind bars will be a major adjustment for the former NFL star.
Wednesday night's dinner at the Dartmouth House of Correction was chop suey green beans and a slice of bread, the sheriff said. Hernandez will only be allowed out of his one-person cell for showers and phone calls. Authorities will perform background checks on any visitors.
Hodgson said he met with Hernandez "as soon as he came in" to the facility and told him he'd receive no special treatment.
Asked how Hernandez responded, Hodgson said, "he did not seem nervous," adding he was "polite and respectful."
Hernandez is currently being held in the jail's medical unit while he undergoes further screening, including mental health, physical and security tests.
As part of the security screening, authorities will determine whether he has any gang affiliations.
"He had tattoos that our gang unit would be looking at ... to see if he's involved in any kind of gang," Hodgson said. "Doesn't mean he is."
The tattoos raise suspicion, the sheriff said, and investigators will follow up with interviews to further determine the significance of what they saw.
"He'll be treated no better and no worse than any other inmate," the sheriff said.

Rant.

Dumbass city planners. Do you seriously need greenspace for these medians?
Oh yeah, "let's not maintain it regularly, let it overgrow, then finally do it"

Dumbest idea ever thought of. This is not only hazard for drivers but a nusiance when the city gardeners have to block off both left lanes, to cut it down.

So this involves...more city employees ($$$), more accidents ($$$) - to add some green space between opposing traffic? Dumbass.

The idiot behind this should get a boot in the ass.

And now the viaduct might be gone....added unnecessary expense. To add insult, isn't the burrard street bridge going to be reduced by a lane each for cyclists/walking traffic?

So you just want to wander around Costco to see whats there and prices? Just tell the front gate person, you are going to the pharmacy, then just wander around. You don't need a membership for their pharmacy. IMO Costco membership is totally worth it, but I buy quite a bit of food in bulk, even living alone, I eat a lot, especially with my crazy gym schedule. They also have a lot of interesting products I won't find at save-on/safeway/etc...

I get all my meat there and freeze it. Ziplock bags in bulk too.

Also: Today I was downtown to pick up my kilt for a wedding (House of McLaren, $220 for the whole kilt and kaboodle, $30 off if you have your own shoes, same for the shirt) and I parked at the easypark just across the street. Went to pay after coming out of the kilt shop and discovered that since I'd only been there for like...15 minutes, they didn't charge me.

Score! +1 for easypark!

Yea I believe its something to do with how pharmacists aren't allowed to discriminate based on membership who they provide services to, so thats why you don't need a membership to use their pharmacy for prescriptions, apparently a lot of people do this because Costco has really low dispensing fees and generic drugs.

A 2 person household should be able to make a membership worth it, unless you two eat like rabbits and provided you have the cabinet/storage space for bulk stuff at home. Besides food, I also buy household cleaning supplies, toliet paper, vitamins, contact solution in bulk.

Another way you can do it is to have someone with a membership buy you a $5 Costco gift card, then you'd be able to enter no problem.

Costco isn't only good for bulk food, theres tons of things for around the house, garden, even clothing. It's just me and my wife, and we make plenty good use out of our membership.

Yes. Double time. Ask them about it.

At first they will play hard to get, but that is part of the game. You have to work for it keep asking and insisting....eventually they will laugh, high-5, and teach you the hand shake. It is not until you master the hand shake that they will tell you how much extra they will pay you.

POLICE REMINDING EVERYONE TO LOCK DOORS AND WINDOWS AFTER BIZARRE BREAK-IN

July 3, 2013
One man is in custody after a bizarre break-in to a home in east Vancouver prompting police to remind residents to lock their doors and windows.

At about 7:00 last night, the resident of a home in east Vancouver found a naked stranger in his kitchen, cooking eggs. When confronted, the stranger fled from the home.

Police were called, and a 30 year-old Burnaby man was arrested a short distance away.

It is believed the suspect was in the home for 20 to 25 minutes, and had even taken a shower before being discovered in the kitchen.

Charges of being unlawfully in a dwelling house have been requested.

There have been 1157 residential break-and-enters in Vancouver so far this year, and the Vancouver Police Department is hoping that homeowners stay vigilant, particularly since 400 of these break-ins show no signs of forced entry.

Warmer weather is here and more people will be spending time outdoors, and leaving windows and doors open to stay cool.

“Ensuring your doors and windows are locked is a simple deterrent,” says Constable Brian Montague. “Don’t make it easy for someone to break-in to your house.”

Real estate developers using heavy machinery tore down a 20ft (6m) tall pyramid at one of Peru's oldest archaeological sites, cultural officials have said.

Rafael Varon, deputy minister of cultural patrimony, told reporters on Wednesday that the destruction occurred over the weekend at the ruins of El Paraiso, a few miles north of Peru's capital, Lima.

He said his agency has lodged criminal complaints against two companies for the damage – identified as Alisol and Provelanz – and has moved to seize the equipment used. People who answered the telephone at both companies said no one was available to comment.

Peru's tourism ministry says El Paraiso was built some 4,000 years ago and was a religious and administrative centre, long before the rise of the Inca culture encountered by the Spanish conquerors.

Marco Guilen, director of an excavation project at El Paraiso, said the people who tore down the pyramid "have committed irreparable damage to a page of Peruvian history".

"We are not going to be able to know in what ways it was constructed, what materials were used in it and how the society in that part of the pyramid behaved," said Guilen.

Varon said people apparently working for the two companies tore down one pyramid and tried to destroy three others, but were stopped by witnesses.

Mayor Freddy Ternero of San Martin de Porres, the town where the ruins are located, said the pyramids were sited in agricultural fields and were not guarded, though he said the minister of the interior sent police to protect it after the incident.

Ultrafast internet service launched by Vancouver startup - Technology & Science - CBC News (http://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/story/2013/07/03/technology-one-gigabit-internet.html)

A new Vancouver-based internet provider says it will be offering fibre internet at a speed of one gigabit per second — 60 times faster than the Canadian average — for a comparable price to that lumbering average connection.
http://www.cbc.ca/gfx/images/news/photos/2013/02/13/promo-broadband-2col.jpg Broadband costs Compare internet services across Canada (http://www.cbc.ca/news/interactives/broadband/)

OneGigabit, a small start-up launched by computer networking and telecommunications specialist Eric Kuhnke, says that for $45 to $65 a month, he will be offering speeds comparable to those offered by Google Fiber, and also with no bandwidth caps. Google's blazing-fast internet service caused a buzz in the U.S. when it first launched last summer in Kansas City, Kan., and Kansas City, Mo., for a modest $70 a month.
A recent report from internet metrics company Ookla (https://fiber.google.com/about/) showed the average monthly Canadian internet bill is $54 for an average download speed of just 16.6 megabits per second. A gigabit per second is the equivalent of 1000 megabits per second.
According to Google, with its gigabit connection speed:

You can stream at least five high-definition videos at the same time (allowing multiple people to watch different things in different rooms of a house or download).
You can download an entire 14-gigabyte digital movie in less than two minutes.
You can transfer data over the internet faster than you can write it to a thumb drive.

But ultra-fast internet speeds are typically only possible if the "last mile" — the wiring that connects a building to the rest of a telecommunications network — is made of fibre optic cable. That is only the case if the traditional copper wiring has been recently upgraded to fibre technology.
'We could not have done this two years ago or even 18 months ago. The radio equipment was half the speed and double the cost.'—Eric Kuhnke, OneGigabitBecause of that, the availability of fibre internet is limited in Canada, mainly to certain buildings and neighbourhoods in urban centres, and it isn't cheap.
Advertised fibre internet packages from major internet providers such as Bell, Rogers and Shaw top out at 175 to 250 megabits per second and cost $115 to $226 a month.
In Vancouver, Shaw offers one gigabit per second internet service (http://http//www.cbc.ca/news/technology/story/2010/02/18/shaw-gigabit-broadband-internet.html) in small pockets and 250 megabit service in other areas for $115 per month. Novus, a Vancouver-based internet provider launched by the Concord Pacific Real Estate Group, offers 300 megabit per second service for $113 a month in certain buildings in B.C.'s lower mainland, mostly highrises, including many built by Concord Pacific, which put fibre optic cable in them when they were constructed.
However, Kuhnke estimates that 98 per cent of Vancouver buildings don't have fibre, and most buildings that do are large office towers.
Real estate clients targeted

OneGigabit's plan is to negotiate with real estate owners, managers and developers and hook up entire small- and medium-sized apartment, condominium and office buildings that don't currently have a fibre connection.
http://www.cbc.ca/gfx/images/news/photos/2013/07/03/sm-250-eric-kuhnke-afghanistan_img_5738.jpgComputer networking and telecommunications specialist Eric Kunkhe launched OneGigabit in Vancouver last week. (Courtesy Eric Kuhnke)"To be frank, it's uneconomical to serve a single client, with the construction costs that are involved to run fibre to one particular tenant to the building," Kuhnke explained in a phone interview.
That's why he is targeting as clients the owners and managers of both existing buildings and those that are about to be built — in fact, he said, costs are significantly reduced if plans to run fibre to the building are made during pre-construction planning.
Building owners and OneGigabit would share the cost of running the fibre to the building, which is cheap if it's strung on telephone poles and more expensive if it is run underground using a technique called microtrenching. The fibre inside the building, connecting directly to each unit, would be paid for and owned by the building itself.

Read why Canadian broadband rates vary so much (http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/story/2013/02/19/f-business-broadband-internet-bandwidth-costs.html)

In cases where the building's location makes fibre installation problematic, Kuhnke has a backup strategy — he is installing rooftop microwave transmitters similar to those used by mobile phone carriers to beam the data from building to building.
According to OneGigabit, the technology can transmit data at up to two gigabits per second over distances of up to eight kilometres.
OneGigabit would cover the cost of the networking equipment, and building owners would commit to a monthly fee per unit for internet service for a fixed length of time, such as three years, with the option to continue the service after the contract is up.
That fee, which would vary between $45 and $65 per month depending on the cost of connecting that particular building, could be passed on to residents in their maintenance fees. Residents would have the option of subscribing to competing services if they wish, but the building would still have to pay the contracted fee to OneGigabit for its service.
http://www.cbc.ca/gfx/images/news/photos/2013/07/03/sm-250-ptp_antenna_540x447.jpgIn cases where it is too difficult to lay fibre, OneGigabit provides a gigabit-speed connection using rooftop microwave transmitters. (OneGigabit)Kuhnke, whose start-up is backed by two private investors, said advances in technology are what has made his business model viable.
"We could not have done this two years ago or even 18 months ago," he said. "The radio equipment was half the speed and double the cost."
The cost of fibre has also fallen dramatically in recent years, thanks to the economies of scale provided by its large-scale installation in Taiwan and China, said Kuhnke, who spent many years working in Asia as a network and telecom contractor.
"Those cities are so far ahead of us."

Compare internet rates across Canada (http://www.cbc.ca/news/interactives/broadband/)

Kuhnke said that, following OneGigabit's launch last week, the company quickly signed up a condo developer who wants to get fibre in before the concrete for the foundation is poured as well as another real estate company that is renovating a building in Vancouver's Gastown neighbourhood in order to attract tenants at a higher lease rate.
He added that if OneGigabit does well in Vancouver, he would like to expand it to other urban centres in Canada.
'There's no reason why it can't work'

Catherine Middleton, a professor at Ryerson University who holds a Canada Research Chair in Communication Technologies, told CBCNews.ca in an email that she expects Kuhnke's business model to be successful, since it allows for financing of the network and provides a high-quality service to residents.
http://www.cbc.ca/gfx/images/news/photos/2013/07/03/sm-250-surface-fiber-bricks-540wide.jpgOne OneGigabit uses a technique called microtrenching to connect buildings with fibre optic cable. In this photo, the paler grouting shows where the fibre was laid, 20 centimetres below the surface, without digging up the street. (OneGigabit)Len Waverman, Dean of the DeGroote School of Business at McMaster University in Hamilton, and a researcher whose specialties include the telecommunications business, said he thinks the microwave technology that Kuhnke is taking advantage of is "very exciting."
"There's no reason why it can't work," he said, although he cautioned that microwave transmission is less reliable than fibre, especially in bad weather.
Waverman said he could see a demand for gigabit speeds among smaller businesses, but he questioned whether many people would want it in their homes.
"I just don't see what a gig to the home would do," he said. "It's nice to say you have it available, but if you're using it just to download lots of movies, I don't see what the business proposition behind that [would be]."
Middleton said affordability is the key to consumer demand. She noted that a 2012 CRTC report showed 75 per cent of Canadian households had access to download speeds of 50 megabits per second or higher in 2011, but at that time only 0.3 per cent of households subscribed to those speeds.
She added, "If the price were comparable to lower speed services, as it is in Kansas City [with Google Fiber], I expect that demand would be high."

I've no problem with sites being developed over as long as they're not deemed extremely significant and a proper application process is done
especially if the sites had already been researched/documented in some form or another i realize researchers will deem all sites highly significant and find reasons to always research said sites but i don't think its fair or necessary to go that far if it gets in the way with growth/development

the issue i have with the story i posted is that it was a significant site and the developers had torn it down without permission

dinosaur
07-05-2013, 03:32 PM
how would you define significance?

StylinRed
07-05-2013, 05:10 PM
my view of whats significant and say what the government would deem significant is very different and when i speak of being "deemed extremely significant" i leave that up to the government to decide and hopefully they'll have consulted universities/museums/et al. in deciding the value of a site and weigh it against what the proposed development would provide

dinosaur
07-05-2013, 05:50 PM
Funny enough, it is not up to the universities, museums, and even the gov't to determine what is significant enough to protect. TBH, there is NO sure-fire significance ratings in BC that can and will protect any archaeological site. The BC Archaeology Branch has a set of guidelines in regards to site significance, but it is up to the archaeologist hired to determine. And even then, it doesn't mean much.

Recommendations can be made (which was actually one of my jobs as an archaeologist) as to how a site is mitigated, but the only time a site is left alone is because of money.

Example: Walmart in Pitt Meadows was scheduled to be built on a piece of untouched land which meant an Impact Assessment needed to be conducted. They found it to be a human burial site. There is no law that says they can not built over it....however, the mitigation plan was very expensive and walmart declined.

Horticultural Hate: The Mystery of the Forest Swastikas

http://a.abcnews.com/images/International/nc_swastika_forest_ll_130705_16x9_992.jpg

Over 20 years ago, a landscaper in eastern Germany discovered a formation of trees in a forest in the shape of a swastika. Since then, a number of other forest swastikas have been found in Germany and beyond, but the mystery of their origins persist.

Blame it on the larches. Brandenburg native Gnter Reschke was the first one to notice their unique formation, according to a 2002 article in the Sddeutsche Zeitung newspaper. To be more precise, however, it was the new intern at Reschke's landscaping company, koland Dederow, who discovered the trees in 1992 as he was completing a typically thankless intern task: searching aerial photographs for irrigation lines.

Instead, he found a small group of 140 larches standing in the middle of dense forest, surrounded by hundreds of other trees. But there was a crucial difference: all the others were pine trees. The larches, unlike the pines, changed color in the fall, first to yellow, then brown. And when they were seen from a certain height, it wasn't difficult to recognize the pattern they formed. It was quite striking, in fact.

As he was dutifully accomplishing the task he had been given, the intern suddenly stopped and stared, dumbfounded, at the picture in his hand. It was an aerial view of Kutzerower Heath at Zernikow -- photo number 106/88. He showed it to Reschke: "Do you see what this is?" But the 60-by-60 meter (200-by-200 foot) design that stood out sharply from the forest was obvious to all: a swastika.

Reschke is actually a fan of his native Uckermark region of northeastern Germany, extolling its gently rolling hills, lakes and woods, as the "Tuscany of the north." But what the two men discovered in 1992 in that aerial photograph thrust this natural idyll into the center of a scandal.

A Swastika as a Birthday Gift?

Reschke chartered a plane to fly over the area, and indeed, a neatly delineated swastika was clearly visible. The local forester, Klaus Gricke, set out to uncover the origin of the troubling larch formation, and he found out that the trees had been there for a long time. By measuring the trees, he came to the conclusion they had been planted in the late 1930s. That means that for decades, during every spring and autumn, a massive swastika took shape in the Kutzerower Heath -- surviving the Russian occupation, Communist rule in East Germany and the fall of the Berlin Wall without ever attracting notice.

The fact that it went undiscovered for so long was in part due to the short period of time each year that it was visible. Furthermore, it could only be seen from a certain altitude, and the airplanes that headed north out of Berlin were already much too high for passengers to see the swastika in the forest. Private planes, on the other hand, were forbidden in East Germany.

It didn't take long for rumors to spread about how the swastika got there in the first place. A local farmer claimed that he had planted the trees as a child, with a forester paying him a few cents for each seedling he put in the ground. Others reported that it was put there as a sign of loyalty after a nearby villager had been taken to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp by the Nazis because he had secretly been listening to the BBC. Still another version holds that a local Nazi leader ordered the trees planted on the occasion of Hitler's birthday. Finally, the Berliner Zeitung newspaper reported that it was planted in gratitude to the Reich Labor Service for building a street in Zernikow.

On my way home from Abbotsford, I took Hwy 1 instead of the cheaper (no toll) Lougheed route. When I get to the 208th overpass, I see these two kids on their bikes sitting mid span. They looked like they were up to something, so I was totally prepared to duck out of the way of something. They were just above the right lane and I was in the left. There was a large spot of water on the road, so I figured the bastards were throwing water bombs at cars. As I get just under the overpass, I see dude in a jeep behind me swerve like he was gonna get shot by a missle or something. He loses control of the jeep and shoots across three lanes of traffic and ends up in the median/ditch. Looked like something right out of a movie. He didn't flip the jeep but it was one helluva rough ride for him.

Not 100% sure if the kids did anything, because they were sitting on their bikes, but I did see something odd on one of the bikes - something shiny. I had my dashcam on, but not sure if anything will show up as the sun was right in front of me. Damn windshield of mine has so many pits in it, it looks like a disco ball with all the sparkles that show up from the sunlight.

I saw a couple of other cars, through my rearview mirror, immediately pull over, so I left it at that. Hopefully the dash cam shows something.

Did you call the cops to investigate?

Nope. The dude in jeep was OK. Didn't flip the car. The kids would have been long gone by the time any cops get to the overpass. I was going to get off at 200th and head over there, but at 17:43, traffic is shitty.

I just looked at the footage. I thought it was three lanes, but it was two. It was a cream colour Jeep Sahara that got involved. The two boys were moving over to the right lane as I got to the overpass and sure enough, there was a puddle of water in my lane. It looked like a plastic water bottle they were about to throw over.

Fricken dumb ass kids.

I will call it in. It might help prevent this kind of thing from happening again. They should cover the overpass with a fence or something.

^ Had to take my door panel off to do some other work and realized its easy access to the rubber seal that the window glides on, plus the bottom of the glass window where most of the buildup is. Its a good idea to lube the channel with some silicone spray and also vaccumm any crap that's sitting at the bottom of the door that may rattle.

You know that if the pump doesn't print off a receipt - you can go inside and ask for one?

I had a pump at Petro Canada where after I swiped my card, it gave back some weird error. The guy came out and told me to use another pump. I asked for a receipt, since my card was swiped - and they said the pump did say authorizing - I wanted to make sure my card wasn't going to be charged. He tried to assure me that I won't get charged. I asked again for a receipt - and the guy finally printed one off for me - he was just too lazy to go to his terminal to do it.

Their computer, whenever a card is swiped - it all goes through their system. If they don't provide you with a receipt - ask for one.

VANCOUVER -- Language barriers may be putting the sexual health of some new Canadians at risk.
That's the concern raised in a study by University of British Columbia School of Nursing researcher Yuko Homma.
She says the majority of East Asian-Canadian adolescents have not had sex, but among those who are sexually active, one in four admit to using alcohol or drugs before a relationship, while nearly half of girls did not use a condom.

Homma says about half of the study group were new to Canada and spoke a language other than English at home.
She says she wonders if they may be missing key information in sexual health classes because of language barriers.
The study was published recently in the Canadian Journal of Human Sexuality.

For all the electrical pros out there:

Got a new dashcam that runs on USB 5V and i want to hardwire it into the fusebox. But as everyone knows cars put out 12V from the battery.

What i've done is taken a USB to Mini USB cable and chopped off the USB end.

I attached the add-a-fuse to the power input of a 7805 12v-5v resistor thingy

The system will include a network of bicycle stations aimed at encouraging short trips. Users will be able to rent bikes at one location and return to another as part of a 24-hour system. Eventually, the program is slated to include 1,500 bikes at 125 stations, in an area that will include downtown and stretch to 12th Avenue, between Main and Arbutus streets.
....
The proposed fees for using the public bike-share program are $95 for an annual membership, $20 for a weekly membership, and $5 for a daily membership. Under all memberships, the first 30 minutes will be free, and cyclists will pay $1.50 to $2 for between 30 to 60 minutes of use, and $5 to $6 for 60 to 90 minutes.

I ponder this every work day so I have to ask...

At Waterfront station sometimes I catch a ride on the arriving train so I get a seat. It does a u-turn and comes back onto the platform on the other side.

About half the time the arriving train says NOT IN SERVICE but it always goes back to the other platform. Being the rebel I am I always jump on.

Why does it say NOT IN SERVICE when it is and is there a chance it will take itself out of service locking me in?

She didn't feel as though the lap bar was secure, employee says if it clicked you're good... RIP.

Family: Roller coaster ride became 'nightmare' - CNN.com (http://www.cnn.com/2013/07/21/us/texas-roller-coaster-death/index.html?hpt=hp_t1)

It was Rosy Esparza's first trip to Six Flags.

She sat beside her son on the Texas Giant -- a 14-story-high roller coaster that boasts what the amusement park calls "the world's steepest drop." And before the ride's cars started moving, CNN affiliate KTVT reported, Esparza was worried.

To her, the lap bar that holds passengers in their seats didn't seem secure, witnesses told the CNN affiliate.

Minutes later, one of the roller coaster's seats came back empty.

Now Esparza is dead, family members told CNN affiliates KTVT and WFAA. A spokeswoman for Six Flags Over Texas says the theme park is committed to finding out what led to the woman's death on Friday. And authorities are investigating.

CNN has not been able to reach the family for comment.

In Facebook posts on Saturday, her sons described the experience as a nightmare.

A flood of condolences and prayers poured in.

"Only God knows Mama," Amado Esparza posted in Spanish along with a photo showing a group of people praying at the amusement park, "something that I will always have as a memory of you is that you loved adventures."

Later, he described his mother as his best friend.

"It is sad to lose my mom," he wrote, "but I am happy that when she was alive she enjoyed it to the fullest. I always took her to explore new places."

On Saturday, authorities said an initial investigation showed no sign of foul play in the woman's death.

"At this point of the investigation, it does not appear there was any foul play or criminality associated with this tragic incident," the Arlington Police Department said in a statement.

Park visitors told CNN affiliate WFAA they saw the woman fall.

"She goes up like this," Carmen Brown told the affiliate, raising her hand up in the air. "Then when it drops to come down, that's when it released and she just tumbled."

Brown told the Dallas Morning News that the woman had expressed concern to a park employee that she was not properly secured in her seat.

"He was basically nonchalant," Brown said. "He was, like, 'As long as you heard it click, you're fine.' Hers was the only one that went down once, and she didn't feel safe. But they let her still get on the ride."

Six Flags confirmed that a woman died Friday while riding the Texas Giant roller coaster, but did not provide further details.

"Since the safety of our guests and employees in our number one priority, the ride has been closed pending further investigation," the theme park said in a statement.

Six Flags Over Texas spokeswoman Sharon Parker said the park is committed to determining exactly what happened.

"It would be a disservice to the family to speculate regarding what transpired," she said. "When we have new information to provide, we will do so."

The Texas Giant was originally designed in 1990 as an all-wooden roller coaster. It was redesigned with a steel track and reopened in April 2011 to mark the theme park's 50th anniversary.

At its highest point, the roller coaster is 153 feet and has a drop of 147 feet, according to the theme park.

British Prime Minister David Cameron today will announce an aggressive plan to crack down on online pornography, as part of an ongoing campaign to protect children from its "corroding" influence. Under Cameron's plan, online porn will be blocked by default for all new UK household internet connections, meaning consumers will have to tell their internet service providers (ISPs) whether they want to disable the filters. The plan will also make it a crime to possess "extreme pornography," such as images or video of simulated rape, the Daily Mail reports.

And FBI flawed hair sample analysis drawing reexamination of thousands of cases
national academy of sciences also say bite mark, burn mark, etc analysis are also flawed

Flawed Evidence Under a Microscope
Disputed Forensic Techniques Draw Fresh Scrutiny; FBI Says It Is Reviewing Thousands of Convictions

The National Academy of Sciences said bite-mark evidence is unreliable. Above, dental molds used in an experiment to show bite marks on skin.

A series of recent court decisions and policy changes is starting to reshape how the U.S. justice system handles disputed or debunked forensic techniques used in thousands of criminal convictions.

The changes affect crime-show staples like identifications made using hair samples, burn patterns, bite marks, ballistics evidence and handwriting analysis, among others. Over the past two decades, many scientists have said these disciplines are unreliable and subject to bias, but courts and law-enforcement authorities had until recently done little to address them.

On Thursday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said that a sweeping review found its experts used microscopic hair comparison to help identify suspects in at least 2,100 convictions from 1985 through 1999, including 27 death-penalty cases. Before the adoption of DNA testing around 2000, investigators routinely relied on visually matching hairs from suspects with those at crime scenes, but recent exonerations have cast doubt on the practice. The FBI said it would now review the 2,100 cases to see if its experts exceeded the bounds of science in their lab reports or testimony. The number under review could increase as the FBI studies more cases.

The Justice Department also said, in a rare move, that it wouldn't raise procedural objections if the defendants in these cases seek to have their convictions overturned, and that it would notify defendants—rather than just prosecutors, as is typical—of any errors found in the cases.

"This is, one, a huge acknowledgment that in thousands of cases, invalid scientific testimony was proffered," said Peter Neufeld, co-founder of the Innocence Project, a nonprofit that is aiding the FBI in its review. "And, two, it's a whole loosening of the rigid rules [of the postconviction process]…as people realize that the system isn't as perfect as we thought."

The FBI review accelerates a shift toward greater scrutiny of questioned forensic techniques—and raises difficult questions about how to address thousands of convictions that relied on potentially flawed evidence.

After decades of inaction in addressing criticized forensics, the past year has marked a sea change. The Justice Department established a National Commission on Forensic Science to set guidelines for forensic disciplines. The Texas state fire marshal launched a review of arson convictions, while the Mississippi Supreme Court stayed an execution hours before it was scheduled after the Justice Department sent letters admitting that FBI experts erred in their testimony.

And in April, responding to the FBI's hair-comparison review, the national organization that accredits state and local crime labs urged them to determine if they need to conduct their own audits of cases that used similar hair analysis. "We have an ethical obligation to take appropriate action if there is potential for, or there has been, a miscarriage of justice," the Laboratory Accreditation Board at the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors wrote to the crime labs.

Meanwhile, legal experts are watching several trials that involve criticized forensic disciplines, including a Manhattan murder trial in which a judge is set to rule soon on whether identifications using bite marks can be used as evidence. The decision is expected to be one of the biggest test cases for the justice system's response to claims of flawed forensics.

The developments are "a wonderful start" toward addressing cases that relied on flawed forensics, said former federal prosecutor Kenneth Melson, the past president of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences. But, he cautions, "there's a long way to go and many bridges to cross."

Some prosecutors and forensic scientists have lamented that the criticisms of forensic techniques go too far and that many are still useful. Dr. Peter Loomis, president-elect of the American Board of Forensic Odontology, said that although bite-mark analysis shouldn't be used to identify a suspect, "it's not junk science.…It can be used to either include or exclude a suspect."

Pressure from activists and media exposs of flawed forensic practices led Congress in 2005 to commission a report by the National Academy of Sciences. Published in 2009, it concluded that besides DNA analysis, "no forensic method has been rigorously shown to have the capacity to consistently, and with a high degree of certainty, demonstrate a connection between evidence and a specific individual or source." Expert witnesses, the report said, have consistently overstated to juries the value of forensic techniques and "the courts have been utterly ineffective in addressing this problem."

Still, many courts have continued to admit evidence based on such practices, and some appeals judges have been reluctant to reconsider convictions. That's in part because, unlike with DNA evidence, the doubts raised about forensic evidence generally can't prove a person's innocence. Indeed, in cases without DNA evidence, exonerations remain rare.

Advocates for an overhaul are now focused on a New York murder case in which the judge has called one of the first-ever hearings on the admissibility of bite marks. In the case, Clarence Dean is charged with killing a woman in a Times Square hotel. For the prosecution, a forensic dentist matched a bite mark on the victim's body to Mr. Dean's teeth.

The National Academy of Sciences has said bite-mark evidence is unreliable and not based on objective science. Bite marks can be distorted by the elasticity of skin, scientists say, and controlled studies have shown different experts produce widely different results, with high rates of false positives.

Mr. Dean's attorneys argued the evidence didn't meet the court's scientific standards. In a rare move, Justice Maxwell Wiley called a hearing to decide.

Challenges to the scientific admissibility of evidence—called Daubert or Frye challenges after past court decisions—are relatively common. But judges have almost always admitted evidence based on the discredited forensic disciplines, citing precedent in past cases, said Nancy Gertner, a retired federal judge who issued several landmark rulings that labeled ballistics, handwriting and arson testimony as invalidated science.

In May, the Justice Department acknowledged the limitations of ballistics evidence in a Mississippi murder case. In Willie Manning's 1994 conviction for killing two college students, an FBI agent used analysis of bullet markings, called toolmarks, to connect him to the bullets used in the murder. In three letters to the prosecutor, a Justice Department lawyer said FBI experts overstated the value of their analyses of toolmarks and hair in the case. "In some cases, FBI Laboratory examiners exceeded the limits of science," the lawyer said.

Judge Gertner said it is imperative the justice system resolves any questions around potentially flawed forensic sciences. "There are two issues: People in jail on the basis of flawed evidence and the people who are being tried tomorrow on the basis of flawed evidence."

Gators football player arrested, for barking at a police dog and resisting arrest

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Florida Gators linebacker Antonio Morrison has been arrested for the second time in five weeks, this time for allegedly barking at a police dog and resisting arrest, and will miss at least the first two games of the season after being suspended from the team Sunday.

Morrison's defense was the dog barked first, according to a police report.

According to an Alachua County Sheriff Office's report, police responded to a suspicious incident and disturbance call at 3:43 a.m. Sunday at a Gainesville hotel adjacent to a nightclub. While officer William A. Arnold was investigating the vehicle that was the subject of the call, a group of several men were walking along SW 13th Street.

One of the men reportedly approached the patrol car and began barking at his police dog through the open window. The report said that caused the dog, named Bear, to bark back at the man, which Arnold says in his report diverted his attention from investigating the vehicle.

The report says Arnold told the man -- later identified by his driver's license as Morrison -- to wait in front of his patrol car and the man resisted when Arnold tried to handcuff him. Two other officers arrived and helped detain Morrison, according to the report.

"I'm extremely disappointed in Antonio Morrison's decision making," Florida coach Will Muschamp said in a statement. "He has been suspended from the team and will miss at least two games to begin the season."

Alachua County Sheriff's spokesman Art Forgey said it's rare for someone to harass a canine officer.

"We don't see that very often at all," he said. "Gainesville Police Department has horses and they see it sometimes. Usually everybody steers clear of the dogs."

Morrison -- a 6-foot-1, 230-pound sophomore expected to be the Gators' starting middle linebacker this season -- told the officers he barked at the dog because the dog barked at him first.

He was booked into the Alachua County Jail at 4:15 a.m. ET.

Muschamp had previously said he hadn't decided whether to suspend Morrison as a result of a June 16 arrest for battery after he punched a nightclub bouncer because he was not given a discounted rate for admission. Muschamp said last Tuesday that Morrison was being punished inside the program for that transgression.

For that arrest, Morrison entered into a deferred prosecution, which stated he must pay $100 in prosecution costs and either an additional $150 or perform 12 hours of community service. He must also complete a University of Florida drug-and-alcohol abuse course, attend an anger-management course and participate in two eight-hour ride-alongs with the University of Florida Police Department.

If Morrison met those conditions within six months, the battery charge would be dismissed.

You can get charged for barking at a police dog? :lol
Posted via RS Mobile

From another Football site

Officer Arnold stated Morrisons actions prevented police from do their job properly so he asked Morrison to step to the front of the vehicle. When the officer tried to detain Morrison with handcuffs, he resisted, the report states.

Morrison was officially charged with interfering with police by harassing a police animal.

So he was interfering with a police officer and resisted arrest lol

Anyone recommend a decent ram dealer in Vancouver?

I went to one in coquitlam and the salesman/atmosphere was so sleazy

PS, they made me sign a worksheet before the finance manager can talk to me about rates. Is it legally binding?

That's frigging bullshit. That's setting you up 4 corners style. Old school auto sales.

When Dino bought her VW, they had the rate right there...better than we could get at the bank. No final round at making money off your ass on the interest rate if you get too out of line on negotiating.

I don't know why but domestic dealers still live in the past and still believe in their old tricks. They didnt even have computers. wrote everything (price, discount) on paper. Plus they keep calling me non stop now from the salesperson to the "senior" manager.

Plus I dont get why a $32,000 Ram costs $738/month to lease for 2 years while a F150 costs $450/month. I guess chrysler products still depreciate like a rock

yeah dude...domestic dealers really are the worst. however, nissan in surrey (152nd and fraser) was the same. old guy in a bad suit sitting a cubicle with no computer scribbling on paper.

i asked, "what are your interest rates?"

"umm...i don't know. you need to talk to finance"

me: "well, before i consider buy a car from you, i'd like to know the break down"

"oh...well, just sign here and you move to the next stage"

I grabbed my purse and walked out. Went to the VW dealership and walked out with a new vehicle.

(I was at nissan because they had a pre-owned tiguan...which was the vehicle i was looking to buy)

Why not get the F150 then? Fords actually have great value when you compare them spec for spec.. especially during their family sales event.

I was trying to talk my dad into buying a Tundra because Toyota and he ended up with the F150. Can't remember exact savings, but spec wise he got a little more truck for a LOT less money.. Of course it will depreciate more, but the extra dough for the Toyota likely wouldn't have been justified in the end.

When I went into my local Ford dealer kicking tires on a new Superduty and sat down with the sales guy, he pulled out the entire interest rate chart and walked me thru it explaining where Id be. Its not a "domestic dealer" thing, its a shitty dealership thing. Go somewhere else.

Oh! Bonus points for a car salesman that uses the term, "well, we gotta pay to keep the lights on"

You know you are getting hosed when they need to appeal to your sense of corporate welfare. No one is asking for the car for free, or less than they paid for it, but if I negotiate a good price on the trade, a good price on the new one and you turn around and say well, its 14.9% interest...its not such a good deal is it?

I have a F350 powerstroke and downsizing because I dont use it for what it was meant for, plus its too big for Vancouver! Was thinking of trying another manufacturer but rams are horrible for lease, shame cause I like the look and the interior blows away any ford trucks.

Mine was "I have twins and I'm one sale away from a bonus" "this employee pricing event means we're barely making money on cars" "you have a mercedes, a little extra payment wont hurt you"

god I hate car salesman. Can't wait for the day you can buy straight from the manufacturer. domestic dealers are literally more stressful than when I bought a house. European dealers are much more professional.

This shit is fucking lame, "Mine was "I have twins and I'm one sale away from a bonus" "this employee pricing event means we're barely making money on cars" "you have a mercedes, a little extra payment wont hurt you""

He's begging you for money. I would seriously and literally say, "that is lame" and walk.

Here's how you buy a car from these guys. First, you make sure that every number is reasonable. Then you go in, channel some Vince Vaughn circa wedding crashers or something, and say, "nope, no need for that paper yet. Here's the deal, I'm going to make it simple. I want to buy a car today. I'm not dicking you around on that, so I hope I'm talking to a guy that doesn't want to do the same to me. So, I need to see x dollars on the trade. I need to see y dollars on the F150 that we looked at. We need to add tax to that, and $150 in documentation fees. Nope, I know you want to get in on that and you're going to tell me that the fee isn't negotiable, but you and know that everything is negotiable. And the interest needs to be 4% on the balance. Now, I know you need to go and talk to people, but I have to tell you that I am not above going to other dealers. Hell, I'll drive to Kelowna shopping this deal to every Ford dealership I find. I think its reasonable, so I just need to know if we're good, or if you are holding the door open for me"

Boom. If your numbers are reasonable, its alright...if you try to rip them off, they'll just FO you.

As they did to me at the Nissan dealership. At least you don't get that awkward follow up phone call asking if you have found a car.

These dicks get trained to sell cars in 1955. In the internet world, no one wants to go in and get the Hank Hill special.

Their main problem these days is they fucking hate, fu-cking hate being in competition with themselves. There is a choice of several of every dealership in Greater Van. I can think of 4 or 5 Ford dealerships without even having to search for the rest.

Instinctively, they think the solution to that problem is getting you to sign up that you agree to buy from there or any variation on that theme. They tried to do that to my sister once...she had fucking none of it. Then they sit a salesmen in a cube with no information and no authority. Can't even take a shit without permission. Why am I negotiating with a human terminal, with some dude I can't see in an office I'm not in?

The answer to all of this is honesty. Here's the deal...here's the car, the payment, the interest and the offer on trade. Yes, we'll do this, no we won't do this. If you like it, let's sell it. If you don't, then don't buy it. You may not make every sale that day, but you'll build capital over time, through referrals and repeat business. They can go to another dealership, and they'll find the same thing....so go and waste time and gas if you feel you must.

used cars easy enough, but will that work on new? How about richmond? I find they are so used to mainlanders to just come in and buy that they dont even care...

Do you know anything about negotiating on used/new motorcycles? I would imagine it be easier, but I can see the numbers not change much at all since the cost of bikes are not that high to begin with.

Never used one before, but how good are car brokers?

I love to haggle and harrass salespeople, but next time, I might look into using a car broker.

For mortgage, I use a broker and it's been good. A car, on the other hand, may be different.

^ don't car brokers go out and find the best deal they can for the particular model of car you want?

Saves you from dealing with sales people........ at least that's how I thought it works. The point is not to do any work. Phone up broker, tell them what you want, then wait for a call back with details. Anyone on RS purchase a car via a broker before?

Gentlemen can this discussion on car buying be turned into its own thread?! I know most of you on this forum are car gurus but this page is pure gold...pure gold for those of us looking to buy a new car.

I have been wanting to upgrade my vehicle for the last year. Got the cash but two things are holding me back one of which is the nightmare of my last purchase still haunts me.

It should not take 5 fu(king hours to buy a car. I should not be talked down to as a woman purchasing alone, you should not hold my drivers license hostage, you shouldn't suggest I bring 'my decision maker' in with me next time, you should not tell me it is too much truck for me, you should not bend me over and try to screw me (figuratively only) in the middle of the show room and bloody most of all I shouldn't have to use some useless go-between to talk to the sales manager.

a Car broker would be great....then again I need to decided exactly what vehicle I want first...rdx, grand Cherokee, X3, XC60, touareg

The only dealership that I have been treated with respect in is VW. Was the same 13 years ago when I bought one and was the same in April when I bought one. I don't know why I ever strayed...

I have been to them all Langley Auto Mall, Surrey Auto Mall, Richmond Auto Mall, and everything in between including used lots. As I said before...they shake my partners hand only, stare at my tits, and won't discuss the purchase with me. "Don't pitch the bitch" is still alive and well!

Go for the Touareg....beautiful vehicle, but a bitch on gas.
