Depends on if their teacher forces them to be trans or not.
Not if you send them off to a Catholic school. Nothing bad has ever happened when the Catholic Church is in charge of kids.

You cannot talk about individuals who want to transition back ... that's a no no. That might imply some sort of personal choice of gender preference and that flies against conventional wisdom.

My mom was Protestant. Then she went catholic because they seem to be having a better time with the drinking and the fancy hats. So she was like one of the few Chinese Catholics and her and the old Italians ladies have a great time Bonding over cooking and food. Also their mutual disappointment with their sons.

I’ll sign an oath to take care of the kid if I really had to, but same shit the pastor at this church is a “young” “hip” guy and he was giving off madddd pedo vibes.
Imo anyone in a position of power like that, especially in an influential church like west van etc. has blood on their hands.
My wife’s family had this one pastor who was essentially a family friend to the parents, he would come to dinners and shit. The hard pressed pastor had a brand new X5 and designer clothes. Dollars to donuts this guy had his hand in a fair share of abuse and pedopheila.

I feel that's a bit on the excessive side in terms of hours. Surely, a trained experienced mech can do it quicker. 5 hrs .. that's over an hour a corner ??!! Assuming it's a shop with lift and power tools. Sometimes shops go with a standard 'book' rate and just go by that whether it takes them 3 or 5 ... which I don't agree with. They should just charge you the real time. (Disclosure, not a mechanic so I could be blowing smoke out of my arse.)

We set ours around 23-24. I've noticed that getting down to 22 or lower runs the AC significantly longer especially on warmer days like today such that it's not worth the trouble (23 is comfy anyways). I'd like to be lower during sleeping hours as lower temps result in better sleep quality but I also don't want to be running the AC a lot when I'm sleeping so I just live with 23 most of the day.
at my old place it would be 23.5 year round and honestly it usually felt too cold.
idk how ppl would set theirs to 17C or even 20C.

I've been 20 - 21C this entire time but I'm worried that it'd be bad for the A/C to be on and working for almost 20 hours a day. 22 - 23C feels luke warm but the A/C actually turns off every hour or so. Y'all leave it on to maintain the temperature when you leave during the day? Otherwise you come home and it's 27-30C inside and it takes 2-3 hours to cool.

I've been too busy / lazy to set up the AC at home so far, but I am very much surprised by how quickly the bedrooms cool down in the evening when I use a window fan to blow outside air in.
It is probably still 26 - 27ºC indoors by the time we finish dinner at ~8pm. But by 9pm with the window fans blowing in outside air, the rooms would cool right down to something in the 23 - 24ºC range, and we're fairly comfortable with that.
The only problem is -- running just the fan doesn't work until the outdoor temperatures drop.

I adjusted my vents this spring so that both floors are within about a degree of each other but now that we have tenants downstairs who generate a fair bit of heat it's actually warmer downstairs than upstairs - it's often 25-26 downstairs when it's 22-23 upstairs - but my tenants don't mind at all and seem to like it that warm (they've declined our offers to open up the vents). They're Brits from the coast so maybe they've been so cold that it's nice to have some warmth for a change.

No, my office is typically 26C but I have a ceiling fan. The kids' rooms are set to 24/25C and the living room is set to 24C. We typically don't turn on the living room AC until something like 2pm when it gets up to like 26/27C in the house. I don't think an AC's setting always corresponds directly to the air temperature... Like if it takes a setting of 24 to be comfortable, maybe the air where you are is more around 22. Simple machines don't even have temp settings, just a scale of 1-10.. I find a setting just below 6 to be the best overnight.
I see neighbours who just keep their windows open and use fans all summer.. Yeah it saves money but holy shit that must suck :fulloffuck:

12/2 doesn't hurt because newer machines are starting to demand it? Or it's new code? I have enough 14/2 on hand but not 12/2, so if 95% of the machines that I might buy can use 14/2, then I'd rather use that.

Second this.
We just don't have a market here in BC or even Canada as a whole. We are not exactly known for being an electronics powerhouse that can support a retail PCB shop. Even if you could find one, they are going to charge an arm and leg because they probably have a quasi-monopoly market here.
If you were in Taiwan/Korea/Japan, then that's another topic. They have many small/unknown companies/startups that form the supply chain to many other large electronic companies and you'd be able to find whatever you need at a highly competitive price.

So i says to Mable (my secretary) i says,

When i was your age (back in the great depression era or some shit) that was even more rare. I guess its because Asian men lacks that big dick energy that white women are attracted to. I blew an asian guy once and all he did was repeatedly thank me. it was such a turn off.

So that got me thinking (after readily thanking her); are we Asian males slapped with this stereotype that we aren't "alpha" enough? Is that why there seems to be this disconnect? Im an old fucking man so i dont know how dem kids do it nowadays, but walking around downtown you hardly see asian dude + white girl. You see A LOT of 68style types... I MEAN A LOT.... like fuck you guy.... its getting outta hand kind of lot.
https://www.thewrap.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/simpsons-memes-no-its-the-children-who-are-wrong.jpg
Isn't being "alpha" just one step away from being toxic? I look around at the male leaders that are well regarded now (Buffett, Satya Nadella, Jeff Bezos, Tim Cook etc) and most are not known for being alpha. Most are kind and empathetic if anything.
FWIW, I dated a (nerdy) white girl in high school (early 90s) and I remember the immigrant dudes would stop me and ask me how I did it and what they had to do to get with a white girl. Some of the immigrant girls would be extra nice to me as well despite me being a total awkward nerd - it wasn't alpha-ness that got me the white girl (or my brother who married a white girl).

I dont know what being Alpha even means nowadays. I tried fort night? fortnite? fork knife? and some kids called me a boomer and told me to suck bags of dicks. The kids all sounded like mice being pushed through a sausage maker, but i guess they are pretty alpha.

12/2 doesn't hurt because newer machines are starting to demand it? Or it's new code? I have enough 14/2 on hand but not 12/2, so if 95% of the machines that I might buy can use 14/2, then I'd rather use that.
No, it's not code to require a 20A 12/2 circuit for a washing machine. I don't know of any washing machines that use the full 20A.
I just mentioned that if you had the capability to install it, more headroom is always a bit better for minimal extra cost. But if you already have the 14/2 wire you'll be just fine with that.

I ended up finding some 12/2, but I should save it for 20A kitchen plugs. Pretty sure I don't have enough for kitchen + washer, especially considering I need 2 separate circuits for the kitchen plugs.

If blue car arrived at the stop sign first and then both the blue and orange car ends up waiting a long time for traffic to clear, which car has the right of way?

Should be the orange car in this case, because the car going straight has right of way over someone turning left at the same intersection.

Our old RCMP friend Skidmark who used to mod the RCMP forum ran this blog, and this scenario is described in here:
https://www.drivesmartbc.ca/intersections/qa-right-way-two-way-stop
This is the actual answer out of the ICBC driving book:
two-way stops — if two streets intersect and only one of the streets has stop signs, then the other street is a through street. Traffic on the through street has the right-of-way. If you are stopped at one of these types of intersections, wait until there is a safe gap before going through or turning. If two vehicles are stopped at a two-way stop and one of the drivers wants to turn left, this driver must yield the right-of-way to the other vehicle. The only exception is if the left-turning vehicle is already in the intersection and has started to make the turn. In this case, the other vehicle must yield.
Radeonboy is correct... unless... Blue car manages to boot it out into the middle of the intersection before orange car moves, in which case orange car must yield.

Wait is irrelevant. Car going straight always has priority over something making a left turn.

I was taught that if you were stopped first you could make a left before someone who had arrived across the street afterward. Guess pops was wrong. Woops.
That is kinda f’ed though. Someone could be waiting forever to make a left if there was a mass exodus of vehicles leaving a neighborhood during the morning rush, for example.

Your pops is right tho. If you arrive first, you can make the left since the person going straight should be stopping before proceeding through the intersection.
The situation in the picture is if they both stop at the same time.
EDIT: Oops, got posts mixed up. Left turn arrives first, straight arrives second, they wait. Yeah, I still stand by straight having right of way and should always go first - that's how I've always done it. Only exception is all way stops.

In that situation if there was a line of cars going straight and you're the blue car trying to go left there's no way I'm waiting for the whole line to clear before I go. Chances are once your out there with your signal on the next car will let you go anyways.

If the cars arrive at the same time, then left turn waits. If I’m turning left and I get there first, I’m going first.

I think if a collision would happen, ICBC would look at the damage and judge it like this:
Orange car has damage on driver's side (frontal damage on blue car): Blue car fault (should have waited for orange car to clear intersection)
Blue car has impact damage on passenger's side (frontal damage on orange car): Orange car fault (should have yielded to blue car to clear intersection)

but you wouldnt need to wait for the entire line to clear. if traffic is clear and safe for both orange and blue car to proceed, orange goes straight, while blue enters the intersection waiting for orange to pass by before turning left. the second car behind orange would not be entitled to blow through their stop sign to go straight, they still need to stop first. since you are already in the intersection, you have right of way over the 2nd car behind orange.

Shared AirBNBs can be really fun, especially since you can get a really nice huge place if 6 or more people are chipping in
That being said I can't imagine adults having issues picking rooms. I like the idea of "whoever booked it can pick the nicest room" but after that, whatevs
Speaking of which, just have to thank OP for bringing back memories of the place we stayed at in Thailand for a week. 6 people shared this place right by the beach, personal chef, backyard pool, amazing rooms that nobody had to fight for... Wish I could go back right now

I guess we can only speak from experience, and I've only ever had really good experiences with my AirBNB trips. They've either been amazing places I could never afford to live in otherwise, or really nice condos in great locations for 1/6th the cost of a hotel.

We stayed in airbnbs in Japan , Australia and Europe.
Japan = quite the experience. You get a whole building to yourself. 6 bedrooms. 3 levels. And you even get parking. Gives you a taste of how a life in Japan would feel like. Pricing wise it was still cheaper than a Hilton / Marriott
Australia = about the same as Japan, entire house in Sydney. In an urban setting close to their downtown core and still cheaper than a hotel.
Europe = sucks. Pretty much all the places are attached to some guys house or just a bedroom. Ended up cancelling most of those and staying at hotels proper.
I think these airbnbs are generally quite fun. You gain a cool experience that you wouldn’t get if you stayed in a hotel

I went all over Europe in 2017 staying in airbnbs and I really enjoyed interacting with all the hosts... I remember those conversations more than I remember some of the places I went. Sometimes I spent an entire evening just talking about their life and how they came to live in X country.
I stayed at a guy's house in Geneva who worked at the UN... and when he came to Canada with his father last year (5 years later!) he came to my office and they had lunch with me, his dad was so excited about the idea that we had met from such a service and how small the world had become and turned out he lived in a town in Belgium one of my family member died in during WW2... and 2 weeks later his dad passed away and I was like the 2nd person he messaged about it.
I was in Zurich and stayed with a gay couple and they took me all around Zurich and we had dinner together at a restaurant and went to a nightclub hahaha it was great.
It wasn't trouble-free of course, some places are better than others and recently Airbnb fucked me over really bad in Austin, Texas but those times were a lot of fun.

Can't really generalize that all AirBnBs in Europe are shit. I find that great value lies in staying in the outskirts. Was able to rent full farm houses in the South of France for like $150/night. Big cities yeah you'll get a shared room in a flat above a busy street.
Same with NZ just this past spring, got entire houses for the price of a hotel room. But these were in places that didn't really have many hotels to begin with.
In North America though, holy shit, seems like hosts are really milking it with exorbitant prices and extra fees. Value is just not there.

I recently went to Victoria for a short trip -- ya, I know it ain't anything fancy or exciting -- and was looking at AirBnB. Holy shxt they were expensive! Easily 25 - 30% more expensive than your typical 3-star hotel (Best Western / la Quinta / Super 8 that sort of thing) after all the extra fees were factored in. And they were no closer to the DT core than the 3-star hotels that were still available.
In the end, I went with a run-of-the-mill 3-star hotel. Not really sure how or why someone would find the AirBnB attractive at the prices they were asking for...

From my own observation, I've actually come across a lot of people who have been a (car) enthusiast at some level, but have since moved on to one thing or another for whatever reason.
Using myself as an example, in my younger days when responsibilities were few and time aplenty, I was obviously doing a lot more fun stuff that I am doing now. Different sports, motorsports, socializing, chasing chicks, eating out, gaming, etc. But as responsibilities pile on, the fun stuff inevitably have to be cut back. Nowadays, I'd say I've pretty much pared everything down to just doing the occasional motorsport thing, and even then, I am only doing it 1/3 to 1/4 as often as I would like.
And then when it comes to gaming, I find that not only have my tastes changed, I am also a lot less willing to try new things, potentially because time has become more of a luxury now, and I don't want to invest time (& money) into a game that I am not sure whether I'd enjoy.

Airbnb has always provided a good alternative for us. We lean towards Airbnb still nowadays because it allows us to rent a whole unit with kitchen and separate rooms for the price of a bigger hotel room. With kids the kitchen and separated space really makes a difference.
We met a really nice host in Melbourne and she took us out for dinner. Lots of hosts will go the extra mile for you if you are nice. Other than an odd one in Munich where the plumbing broke the day when were checking in, no fault of the host and she found us alternative arrangements. I think the only below average experience was in Osaka where I think the unit was vacant for a long time and the drains dried, and the unit smelled like the sewer. Once we filled up the u bends with water and let the smell dissipate it was fine.

Probably all 3 and more. The price point to drive something fun for sub $10k-20K has gone. I remember $2-5K was enough to get you a RSX-S / Civic SiR, GSRs, 240sx. Now they are $8-15K+ for 200-300,000KM+ examples.
New cars cost almost $40-50K out the door + financing for a new GR86, Miata, Elantra N, Civic SI. People are too worried about affording to move out, eat, travel, short-term entertainment, that the thought of buying a $10-15K shitbox is not desirable. The $30-50K car are probably never attainable for 80% of the Gen Z's out there without help.

I don't think the car scene locally is dead. But, the scene has moved onto new ways of organizing and discussing cars. I decided to check out the local cars and coffee last week. Pretty good turnout and there are lots of people, young and old, who can still afford (or racking up credit lines) the hobby.
What's probably changed is that I don't think a lot of people under the age of 40 turn wrenches anymore given the lack of detached home ownership and the complexity of newer cars.

The scene is also more fragmented. There's less big homogeneous meets like RS where everything goes and everyone comes out to a big event, more little groups here and there. A lot of meets are under 10 cars to get coffee or whatever.
There's also one more medium that's not mentioned, whatsapp (or insert your choice of IM app) groups. I'm part of 3 different car groups on whatsapp for completely different ppl, purpose, and audience. There's probably more that I can join, but message overload.

Facebook started it, but other social media as well, mostly reddit
And yeah, being a niche forum also limits new interest, especially regional. Anyone interested in cars will find a subreddit to go to. Vancouver people will go to the Vancouver subreddit. I guess there's Whatsapp groups too but I never used Whatsapp for group messaging before.. it seems like it would be awful for that

I don't know about this. Sure, there are many people who are struggling, but there are so many newer cars on the road these days. People aren't buying traditional sport compacts anymore - they're buying F150s, luxury SUVS, or Teslas. Now that you mention it, it's no longer about modifying civics and all about "Adventure!" with #vanlife and overlanding by buying a $4k tent you use twice a summer.
The backcountry scene is huge, based on the price of older Jeep models and 4Runners.
Speaking of #vanlife, when I take my family to public campgrounds, the amount of RVs nowadays is ridiculous. Even though we have a few more creature comforts these days, like inflatable mattresses that run on powered inflators, at least we still go camping in a tent.
Whenever I hear people complaining about the cost of living, look at the things that people sink their money into.

This might be the only strike I didn't support. Maybe if it was a job people could get without it being gifted to them. These guys make more than nurses and firefighters.
As someone who recently joined the port as a side gig yeah it's a sweet ride for the guys that are in membership but for everyone else you're looking at possibly 10+ years before you'd ever get full time consistent work year round. It took 4 years just from submitting my application to getting trained to work there lol

It's because the work is based on how many ships they get and whatnot, so one day they might need 1000 guys the next day it could be 4000. Members get first pick and then it goes down the spare boards after that etc.
Honestly the most annoying part is you have to go to the hall to try and get work and when you're on the lower boards you can go there day after day for nothing which means you're actually losing money with gas prices these days.
It would be so much nicer if you could put your name down online and then just go for work if it's available, but these guys are very old school mentality and if they had to grind back in their day then everyone else after them has to suffer through it too
You want a good job? join this supply chain on the port side or the rail side and you'll be making a killing.
Get your red seal certificate in heavy-duty mechanic and apply to the BCMEA. they will get you a longshoremen ticket and you too can be a xmas ham!

If you're a filthy casual (their words, not mine) its grind grind grind and eat a lot of shit before you are a member. Trades is a tad bit easier to get work as they often run short (heavy duty mechanical/eletrician for example)
But if you just have a regular ole casual that means youre either driving to east van (if youre local 500) or close to fraser surrey dock (if youre local 502) for dispatch and often walk away empty-handed for years on end. Its such an old school and bullshit system but hey, THATS TRADITION!!!!.

You'll never make it in the union. The only way to truly become a successful longshoreman is to grab a ticket when you are 18 and then wait.... and wait... and wait... until you're almost 30+ before you can hold a steady job on the waterfront. Till then, prepare to go to the hall every day, live with mom and dad, and eat a lot of shit from foremen/management/members.
The easiest way to get a job on the waterfront is to start working for the terminals/port authority in any capacity possible. Whether in customer service or just some low-end, paper-pushing front desk job, it'll open doors to something more lucrative. Or do what i always wanted to do and join a tug boat as a deck hand. The money is shit at the beginning and you'll never see your family, but when you make mate or captain its big bucks. Eventually, you can go do your Marine Pilots test and those fuckers make 500k+ a year easily. Some are pulling in closer to a million. Marine pilots make airline pilots look like a bunch of hobos on east hastings.

Pilots are in their own union. Different than longshore.
For longshore the best position / king of the job board are the linesmen.
These guys are the dudes who tie up the ships / release the mooring lines.
Why? Because each tie up or release only takes 40 minutes and it counts as a shift. If there’s a lot of vessels that day you can get in 2 shifts a day for less than 2 hours of work.
Worst job is lashers. They are the manual labor that binds/unbind those metal bars to the containers. It’s physical, it’s dangerous, and it’s quite stressful. Everyone starts as lashers and then afterwards go into mechanized equipment.

What kind of automation will help the port but the union is opposed to?
Any and all kinds.
For example Deltaport had some new cantilever rail mounted gantry cranes. That was key part of their Deltaport densification project (drep). Union fought them tooth and nail until they promised that all existing crane drivers jobs will be protected and it won’t lead to any job cuts.
With this new system it’s pretty much automatic. The computer does 99 percent of the work and the operator sits inside a air conditioned room press a single button to confirm the move. They can go into manual mode but why bother. Of course the next step is to remove the human element.
If you look at other international port terminals they are also fully automated. There’s no longshore on the berth almost. The union fears this of course but how long can they strangle hold progress is up to the politicians.
Average North American moves per hour are at 27-30. Average Asia moves are well exceeding 35+. Automation and lack of these unions yields much bigger productivity gains. Deltaport barely can crack 24 so even below North American standards.

Logic and common sense has no place on the waterfront.
But that’s the hands we are dealt. The only thing that’ll change mindsets is if it turns into a situation like Portland where they used to have a thriving container terminal but due to how militant their union was, it drove away all the business. Eventually they just shut it down.

The difference between the US west coast vs the Canadian west coast is though -- the US west coast stretches from Blaine, WA all the way to Imperial Beach, CA, and any given city with a big enough port can take the business of another port. But here in BC, we pretty much only have Vancouver that can meaningfully serve as the gateway to the rest of Canada on the West Coast.
(Or we can just have our ports shut down, and have stuff shipped up from the US~ yay~)

So all the stuff that goes through our gateway, 70% is USA destined anyways (Canada isn’t a huge import market vs the USA). Besides Vancouver there’s also prince rupert (same ILWU) but longer travel times to east coast than Vancouver traditionally.
The only thing keeping our asses in game is the dollar advantage. That’s the only reason why people are shipping through Canada instead of going through the USA directly. Recently with the bullshit China vs Canada crap, Asian companies are instead going through their belt and road countries to Europe and then finally to east coast of USA instead of west coast. The east coast longshoremen union ILA is way easier to deal with.
Only port worse performing than Vancouver is LA Longbeach and people are sick of dealing with these restrictions.

We are furniture shopping right now and looking at the prices at restoration hardware/paramount i see that a good 30%-50% of the overall cost is due to inflated shipping charges during the pandemic. The manufacturers had to pay these exorbitant shipping charges and of course they pass it on to the consumer.
Their stock inventory all carry this surcharge, but its not like if i were to order the same item today they will discount it. The prices are already reflect the elevated rates and it wont be for months / maybe years until they reflect the more nominal shipping rates of today (when all existing stock is cleared out).
Ive talked to shippers and manufactures that refused to spend money on R&D this year due to the overwhelming amount of covid inventory they still have in their warehouses. Canadian airline industry on the verge of collapse?
Been out galavanting the last 2 weeks with friends from Toronto, so their parents have a place up the Sunshine Coast. Their relatives who have every resource in the world coming to BC had first flight cancelled, then second flight cancelled, then returning home last week the air traffic control was so shit in TO that they had to land in Hamilton to refuel and then wait 3 hours to get back to Toronto
Fast forward a week my friends from to, two seperate couples come, again first flight completely cancelled, rebooked for the following day, because of this they missed a connection, no refund
The following week the sibling of the first guy and his wife and 2 kids have a Toronto to YVR flight cancelled and scheduled for 5pm the next day after originally being 6am Toronto time, they miss a float plane connection and lose $900 and have to pay another $700 to fly with a different airline up the coast
THEN returning to Toronto, the first guy has 2 flights cancelled, him and his wife split up between 2 flights, hers gets cancelled AGAIN and they scramble and get on a booking 12 hours after the original
Now yesterday my wife was suppose to fly to Philly for work, YVR - Newark - Philly
The night before she gets notification the Newark - Philly route is cancelled, ok so they will get to Newark and then find a different flight. She gets to YVR yesterday morning at 4 am, waits till 7am, YVR - Newark cancelled, entire trip cancelled.

Definitely get travel insurance, preferably a decent one if possible if whatever CC used for the ticket booking doesn't already have one.
When I went to France last year, it was originally a one-stop flight from YVR to YUL and then to LYS (Lyon). It ended up being a Can-Euro-Tour of YVR-YYZ-FRA-AMS-LYS.
To top it off, my luggage was delayed at AMS, so it only arrived more than 24hrs later. My CC ended up reimbursing me like 1400 CAD (cloth I needed for meeting, and flight delay comps) in total between all the coverages.

I went to Japan for a buddies wedding, plus an extra 9 days to do other shit
Yeah I burned 5k for the trip, and gifted him a 800$ portable AC instead of cash. (He said they got almost 40k back, from gifts, of their 40k wedding cost....)
Then again, he did ball out on us.... Kimono rentals, several fancy all paid for dinners, sumo tickets, team labs event......
I would say if depends if your close with the person or not.
If you an "extra" and only talk once or twice a year, then nope to the gift money. If your close, then the 500$ gift helps offset the "day of entertainment" that they provide to you
Again, find the thread, lots of opinion in there

All these flights I mentioned are with AC or operated by AC, so imo it’s a staffing issue which like most things isn’t going to be resolved overnight and a typical result of profits over service?
There’s not one reason a morning Toronto - YVR flight should get cancelled, it’s the busiest leg, on the busiest route, with an airline with what, 200 planes? And virtually every plane in their fleet can serve that route, so it’s total BS.
In terms of the above questions regarding reimbursement there may be something there but it’s going to be a huge headache to get any money even out of the top tier insurance imo. The couple with the kids the leg they do from Pearson to the south terminal float plane has to be aligned almost perfect, it’s a small float plane operation the guy is straight business he doesn’t care period about writing you any sort of itinerary etc. to forward to your CC. As well, the way AC is wording these cancellations they are blaming it on mechanical issues which I believe are not covered under some insurance instances? Which is totally BS obviously
So then after eating the float plane they fly pacific coastal to Powell River essentially to make it the most time saving scenario, that’s another $700 one way and I have a feeling any insurance company is going to hella grind you over this “bougie” or whatever unnecessary connection reimbursement when the whole thing arose from a “mechanical” issue
This really isn’t like some sort of thing where I’m sure the Reddit crowd would he like “omgggg stfu at least you’re travelling!!!” This is more like hey your internet bill just went up 40% in the last year and your service is worse and more intermittent than ever.

They said they had no pilots available.
Then the following weekend, I heard that 200+ flights had been cancelled in Canada?? I know their pilots are doing some kind of rotating strike action or something? But this seems like a situation where the airline is at risk of folding.

The airplane thing, one significant delay or cancelled flight cascades down the chain until eventually everything blows up, typically a plane gets something like an hour to 3 hours of turnaround time on the ground, and if it's a significant delay it's hard to recover until everything winds down for a few hours on a continent.
Delays can be on the airline, on the airport, on another airline altogether, or just an act of god.
The airline has a staff shortage - delay
The other airline can't leave their spot on time - delay
Airport doesn't have a tug available - delay
A mouse was coughing on the runway - delay
Granted airlines do lie through their teeth to try and avoid paying any compensation.
i've been to a few destination weddings, but they were always in the home countries of the bride/groom so i didn't really see it as the same thing as picking some random tropical country for a week, blowing 5k, etc.. the wedding was not for some big dreamt up destination, it was more out of practicality so their families could attend. i went to 3 of them and they were all close friends, and yes i gave a gift every time as well.

OMG...why so many delays???
Go in April, May, Sept, Oct. Fuck Summer and FUCK Christmastime. But but I have..Kids! Well, pull them out of school save yourself some headaches and a few grand. None of that shit they learn in Elementary matters anyways.
This time last year everyone's baggage was being lost. Remember that? Shit always happens in the summer.

Pulling out of school is no small feat tho... I seen what my sister goes through with that. Missing a week when they're in elementary age is a pretty big deal depending when.
In my Dad's case he goes to an accordion camp and doesn't have a choice when it's put on. He went last year and it wasn't an issue...
Airlines are charging and arm and a leg for tickets now but they don't pay their staff properly, just reaping the profits. There's plenty of people willing to work.

Never once have I ever heard/seen this type of cancellation/delays
Also it’s very much a Canada/north American thing. I watch numerous AV geeks on YouTube who fly all over the world including Europe, Asia, etc. people who have no interest in the airlines other than to review and would destroy any airline with these types of cancellations and they just aren’t happening to them, this is 4-5 different people I watch, sure maybe a delay here and there all travelling currently and non-stop for the most part.
But 10 different flights between 8 people in a 3 week span? Lol nah man like this shit ain’t normal even for the summer. And not for airlines in general.

There isn't really anywhere to go in July/August anyways that's worthwhile IMO.
East Coast USA/Canada - Hot and Expensive, full of kids out of school.
Rest of BC, California - On FIRE
Europe - Hot AF, crowded and stupidly expensive. Full of annoying American college kids.
E Asia - Hot and Humid AF
SE Asia - Rainy Season, also hot and humid AF. Full of annoying Euro Backpackers.
Australia/NZ/S.America - It's winter time duh
South (Mexico, CentralAm, Hawaii) - Why go now when you can escape when it's our crappy weather season instead). Plus hurricane season starts earlier and earlier you're rolling the dice.
Just sit at home and chill, hope for no smoke and plan your vacations for the Fall. Or not, keep going now and keep my flights cheaper :troll:

Going to Montreal in August as well but company said no to flights and I have to drive from Toronto. I went to Calgary and Vancouver last month and my flights on AC got cancelled a total of 8 times. :D
They are on a looming pilot's strike due to their agreement coming up for renewal hence all the cancellations.

So my moms apartment in east van had a leaky sink in one of the bathroom. I go there and found out that my stupid old man been dumping acid down the drain to clear up the slow running drains for the past few years. Everything is corroded and leaking now.
I called a plumber and he replaced the entire drain assembly for both sinks, two new faucets, new cut off valves, 2x toliet fill valves and gaskets for $1800. Took the guy less than 3 hours to do all this and I’m glad I called a professional. Last time I fucked with plumbing I almost half flooded her suite trying to change a toliet fill valve (her place has a faulty main water shut off valve so it could never be fully shut).
Now that’s a good trade to be in. Plumbers / electricians / anything and everything that people need to use on a day to day basis is guaranteed food in your mouth.

Given the relatively short distance, it’s probably easier to just bus there and drive it back yourself. I’ve heard many horror stories shipping cars unless you spend some big bucks for big names.

Go to crappy tire, buy a bunch of these
https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/air-sponge-environmental-odour-absorber-227-g-0530162p.0530162.html?&&gclid=Cj0KCQjw8NilBhDOARIsAHzpbLBe3mC7pEOtXQpX19lE D9ItSKQMQDh4a2lZFxh__P1Snu4c1RoIrdcaArzIEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds#store=389
Leave them in the car for a month, should reduce smell by 50% at minimum.
That's how we get the smell out of our trucks at work when a smoker is in them for years
If the car was smoked in all its life...... Then there may be no solution....

Granted airlines do lie through their teeth to try and avoid paying any compensation.
This happened the night of the WestJet/pilots strike deadline.
WestJet cancelled wife's flight for the next morning at 9pm. WJ and the pilots reach a deal 2 hrs later. We take a refund as the wife booked a refundable back up flight on AC.
Filed the delay/cancel complaint as you're supposed to get $400 on top for compensation. WestJet denied it claiming "labor dispute /strike.”
Filed a CTA complaint and now we wait.
Fuck you WJ. You cancelled it before the pilots took the job action, and you got a deal done before the legal strike deadline so no labour action happened.

This would probably belong better in the Canadian politics thread, but if I were Turdeau, I'd totally see this as an opportunity to regain some popularity and voter support.
1) start the offensive off by emphasizing the importance of import / export / trade
2) then demonize those union bastards
3) threaten to legislate the bastards back to work
4) if they still don't in a day or two, demonize Singh and the NDP for hurting Canadians and the Canadian economy
5) table back-to-work legislation, and make it a vote-of-confidence issue
6) if the Cons don't support it, lambast them too
6a) parliament would have dissolved at that point, and the campaign rhetoric would be -- only the Liberals is willing to protect Canadians and the Canadian economy
6b) if the Cons support it, take all the credit for themselves
Personally, at this point, I don't see what Turdeau would have to lose if they go ahead with back-to-work legislation. In fact, they have everything to gain from it.
But if they still don't act on the negotiation breakdown, they'd have to bear all the blame for it, and it will be very damaging for the next (federal) election where things are already not looking so hot for Turd/Libs.

we basically have a bunch of commy fucks in government. i seriously doubt they will do anything here with any sort of expediency.
Legislation should have been drafted the 2nd day of their strike as technically ports are considered an essential service
"Services that facilitate the transportation of essential supplies, personnel and services, including port/waterfront operations, road, air and rail operations;"
how the fuck can you allow an essential services to shut down for 2 weeks!?

Don't get me wrong, i'm not on the side of the union one bit.
I also think gov't has to be very careful when it comes to back to work legislation. Free market negotiating is a cornerstone of labour relations and if the gov't is seen as being too heavy-handed, all the other unions will cry foul and then we'll have much, much bigger problem to deal with. There are a lot of union workers in Canada who the gov't relies on for votes.
I guess it's like dealing with a toddler, you wanna be seen as a the parent/authority figure, but you also don't want to say the wrong thing and cause a full blown tantrum.
So with that in mind, I think the gov't handled this one pretty well. It gave both parties ample opportunity to negotiate at the table, and they couldn't figure it out, so now it's time to come in and force them to shake hands.

It seems like the ILWU screwed up -- being caught illegal on a "did not provide 72hrs strike notice" seems entirely like a rookie mistake on the ILWU's part. Personally, I'm surprised to hear a big union messing up on little details like this, and I'd say the fed gov got lucky to be able to catch them on this technicality.
