Wow, Angelina Jolie recently underwent a double mastectomy.

Full article from http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/14/opinion/my-medical-choice.html?smid=tw-share&_r=1& behind spoiler tag.

MY MOTHER fought cancer for almost a decade and died at 56. She held out long enough to meet the first of her grandchildren and to hold them in her arms. But my other children will never have the chance to know her and experience how loving and gracious she was.

We often speak of “Mommy’s mommy,” and I find myself trying to explain the illness that took her away from us. They have asked if the same could happen to me. I have always told them not to worry, but the truth is I carry a “faulty” gene, BRCA1, which sharply increases my risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer.

My doctors estimated that I had an 87 percent risk of breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer, although the risk is different in the case of each woman.

Only a fraction of breast cancers result from an inherited gene mutation. Those with a defect in BRCA1 have a 65 percent risk of getting it, on average.

Once I knew that this was my reality, I decided to be proactive and to minimize the risk as much I could. I made a decision to have a preventive double mastectomy. I started with the breasts, as my risk of breast cancer is higher than my risk of ovarian cancer, and the surgery is more complex.

On April 27, I finished the three months of medical procedures that the mastectomies involved. During that time I have been able to keep this private and to carry on with my work.

But I am writing about it now because I hope that other women can benefit from my experience. Cancer is still a word that strikes fear into people’s hearts, producing a deep sense of powerlessness. But today it is possible to find out through a blood test whether you are highly susceptible to breast and ovarian cancer, and then take action.

My own process began on Feb. 2 with a procedure known as a “nipple delay,” which rules out disease in the breast ducts behind the nipple and draws extra blood flow to the area. This causes some pain and a lot of bruising, but it increases the chance of saving the nipple.

Two weeks later I had the major surgery, where the breast tissue is removed and temporary fillers are put in place. The operation can take eight hours. You wake up with drain tubes and expanders in your breasts. It does feel like a scene out of a science-fiction film. But days after surgery you can be back to a normal life.

Nine weeks later, the final surgery is completed with the reconstruction of the breasts with an implant. There have been many advances in this procedure in the last few years, and the results can be beautiful.

I wanted to write this to tell other women that the decision to have a mastectomy was not easy. But it is one I am very happy that I made. My chances of developing breast cancer have dropped from 87 percent to under 5 percent. I can tell my children that they don’t need to fear they will lose me to breast cancer.

It is reassuring that they see nothing that makes them uncomfortable. They can see my small scars and that’s it. Everything else is just Mommy, the same as she always was. And they know that I love them and will do anything to be with them as long as I can. On a personal note, I do not feel any less of a woman. I feel empowered that I made a strong choice that in no way diminishes my femininity.

I am fortunate to have a partner, Brad Pitt, who is so loving and supportive. So to anyone who has a wife or girlfriend going through this, know that you are a very important part of the transition. Brad was at the Pink Lotus Breast Center, where I was treated, for every minute of the surgeries. We managed to find moments to laugh together. We knew this was the right thing to do for our family and that it would bring us closer. And it has.

For any woman reading this, I hope it helps you to know you have options. I want to encourage every woman, especially if you have a family history of breast or ovarian cancer, to seek out the information and medical experts who can help you through this aspect of your life, and to make your own informed choices.

I acknowledge that there are many wonderful holistic doctors working on alternatives to surgery. My own regimen will be posted in due course on the Web site of the Pink Lotus Breast Center. I hope that this will be helpful to other women.

Breast cancer alone kills some 458,000 people each year, according to the World Health Organization, mainly in low- and middle-income countries. It has got to be a priority to ensure that more women can access gene testing and lifesaving preventive treatment, whatever their means and background, wherever they live. The cost of testing for BRCA1 and BRCA2, at more than $3,000 in the United States, remains an obstacle for many women.

I choose not to keep my story private because there are many women who do not know that they might be living under the shadow of cancer. It is my hope that they, too, will be able to get gene tested, and that if they have a high risk they, too, will know that they have strong options.

Life comes with many challenges. The ones that should not scare us are the ones we can take on and take control of.

So I've never really cared much about Metrotowns parking authority until yesterday.

I received a "Warning Ticket" yesterday while parked there. Its great though as Metrotown has a 4 hour max, and I wasn't even there for 3 hours. Best part?: There is no reason why I received the ticket, just some stupid code in the additional comments. (I looked at all the tires, and none had chalk which most likely means some asshat just came by and decided I've been there "too long")

Going to go back to Metro today or tomorrow and go ask the manager at Concord Parking what the code means, and why the FUCK I got a warning for parking there PLUS I want that warning voided and taken out of their system as like I said before, next time I'll probably get a nice hefty FINE for legally parking. to the system.

If me and my GF went down Friday after work and came back Sunday night we would be under the exemption of the $450 each or whatever amount

If neither of us bought anything and I bought a set of $800 tires would we be able to use both our total value towards the tires or should I get her to buy two of them and I buy two of them?

Speaking of Transit Police...they are RUTHLESS at fare checks. I always double check that I have my college ID on me because I'm not interested in fighting a ticket in court. They even check if you signed the back of the UPass.

I was short 50 cents to get on a late night bus ride home in a remote part of town and transit police officers happened to be on the bus when it approached my stop, removing other unruly riders and they denied me from getting on the bus and also denied other passengers from giving me the change I needed to get on. I have no idea why they did this. The bus left and so did the officers and I was left to walk down the Barnett highway in the middle of the night. The officers said it wasn't their problem and I should have brought the right amount of change. I called the next day to speak to a liaison and was directed to BC Police Act Website. I submitted a complaint and never heard anything. Placing the importance of collecting an additional 50 cents well above protecting me from having to walk for several hours down a highway at night seems like a poor directive for policing our transit and the systems in place to have some feedback from the force for their actions were useless. I have little faith or support for the department after that night.

I've only had one experience with TP where they weren't such hardasses. I was caught without a fare at Royal Oak and they pulled me off at Metrotown, but since I didn't BS the officer he ripped up my ticket.

Since then I always pay my fare, I pay Addfare even if it's close to 6:30pm. Bus drivers are lenient (like on the #135) but I think I'd probably get a ticket at 6:29pm for not paying Addfare.

Anyone know what happened with the Kandoo Restaurant/Bakery/Market in Poco? it's beside the Treehouse Pub in that little apartment/market complex

Normally go there to buy some cow tongues, went today and they were closed down, was wondering if they moved or are renovating or went bust? there's no sign posted :/

Anyone know of any other places I can grab some cow tongues? :)

I'm a little confused about this, can someone shed some light?

If my parents were born in Asia, immigrated to Vancouver and got their Canadian citizenship (does citizenship matter?), and then had me here in Vancouver, does that make me first generation Canadian or second generation?

First generation Canadian is you are the first person in your family being born in Canada and So on.

My dad is the only one in the family born in Canada out of 9 bros/sisters so that would make me 2nd generation on my dads side.

There is some debate over this. I believe the first generation is reserved for those who came to this country for the first time.

Kid born here would be second generation.

Like I said, people debate this all the time.

Was in Bellingham yesterday for Memorial Day deals at Harbor Freight. Got hungry and needed gas, so headed out to Costco. Of course, being a holiday, the place was closed. I ended up going to McDonalds. Damn, that high fructose corn syrup ketchup is nasty. I nearly choked on the shit. Luckily, I found some really old Canadian ketchup packets stuck between the seat and the console. I think it was like a few years old, but it was like heaven compared to that other shit. How do the Amuricans do it? Everything is high fructose corn syrup.

Please, sweet jesus of nazareth, don't let that shit anywhere here in Canada. BTW, I noticed a ketchup bottle at home that I bought at Shoppers Drug Mart in the fridge. It says Made in the US of A. Out in the garbage it goes if it has that shit in it. Fructose and glucose are mentioned in the ingredients list, so it may not be that bad.

Actually, Glucose-Fructose is HFCS. It is used a lot more in the US because of massive corn subsidies and an embargo on Cuban sugar. In fact, the corn lobby wanted to change the name of HFCS to "corn sugar" but the government said that would be deceptive.

But I agree with you. I was in Point Roberts picking up a package and I told the lady at the Letter Carrier how expensive groceries were in Canada. She told me that even though groceries are cheaper in the US, the overall quality of the product is higher in Canada. For example, the barbeque chicken at a Canadian Costco is better than at an American Costco, because Canadian farms have higher safety and quality standards-they use younger chickens with juicier meat. In America, land of deregulation, you get really, really good products at the high end and terrible stuff at the low end. Combined with the broken health care system and skyrocketing college tuition and I'm glad I don't live in America. I'll stick to crossborder shopping.

On a side note: American fast food chains give you a LOT of condiments, especially Jack in the Box. Not like here in Canada where they charge you 15 cents for every ketchup packet after the first one. But, I have rarely had a bad experience at a Canadian fast-food restaurant. In the US? There's a reason I only eat at Jack in the Box.

SoNaRWaVe
05-29-2013, 01:10 AM
just call the police non emergency phone number and leave your report. and ask to be remained anonymous.

Contact the VPD | Vancouver Police Department (http://vancouver.ca/police/contact/911.html)

Examples of Emergency & Non-Emergency Calls

Emergency Examples

Examples of calls to 911 for police:

an event that involves an immediate threat to person or property (e.g. screams or shots fired)
a substantive in-progress crime (e.g. fight, break and enter or impaired driving; this includes drug dealing if the suspect is on scene)
a serious crime that has just occurred (e.g. sexual assault or robbery)
a suspicious circumstance that may indicate an immediate criminal act (e.g. prowler, door-to-door salesperson who doesn't have proper identification, vehicle "casing" the neighbourhood)

911 calls within the Greater Vancouver Regional District go directly to the ECOMM (http://www.ecomm.bc.ca) central call taking centre.
The use of (604) 717-3321 for all non-emergency reporting helps to keep the 911 lines available for people reporting an emergency situation.
If you are unsure how serious an incident is, call 911 and they will advise whether or not to call the non-emergency number (604) 717-3321.

I prefer gunk's liquid wrench over WD40. Remember with liquid lubricants you have to tap the bolts or at least apply some torque / vibration so that the lubricants will work itself into the metal to metal areas. Use a wrench and hold the back hex bolt head too.

If you are really frustrated, I suggest going to your nearest Air Liquide dealer and get some liquid nitrogen and just pour it on the bolt head, a few seconds then a tap at the bolt head, it should fall off.. it makes a heck less mess than fire especially in tight spaces. (but remember to wear safety goggles and thick gloves!)

Was posted on my FB newsfeed this morning.

Meatless Monday Vancouver | Vancity Buzz | Vancouver Blog (http://www.vancitybuzz.com/2013/06/meatless-monday-vancouver-on-june-10-2013/)

The City of Vancouver has proclaimed that Monday June 10th, 2013 will be known as Meatless Monday.Vancouver is the first Canadian city to endorse Meatless Monday, a growing movement that encourages citizens to eat less meat for environmental and health reason. On that day people will be urged to go meatless.

Don’t worry carnivores, you can still eat meat before and afterwards, even during. However, one day without bacon wouldn’t hurt you.

From their website:

It’s not about going vegetarian. (Though that is a great choice.)

It’s about healthy, sustainable eating. It’s about reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It’s about doing what we can to slow down global warming. And it starts with you.

But why is this initiative so important?

Animal agriculture is responsible for a whopping 18% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global warming. That’s more than all forms of transportation combined – on the entire planet!

The emissions come from methane in animal manure, nitrous oxide from fertilizer used to grow animal feed, and the cutting down of forests for grazing land.

Are there health benefits from going meatless?

Reducing your meat intake can lessen your own risk for developing chronic conditions like obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and even cancer.

Do you have valid reason demand for the higher price? ie Maintenance / part upgrades don't count. What kind of car? You can go to arbitration but unless you have a good leg to stand on (documented limited production, or it was apraised) etc. You usually don't have much to go on.

Yeah, that comparable vehicles in the area are higher than the offered. The vehicle used in their report is over 5hrs of driving. They seriously expect one to drive that far? for a comparable replacement? Unreasonable.

It's cause June & July are when the kids leave the nest and learn to fly :D. So if you're ever wondering why crows are squawking and dive-bombing you, there's probably a nestling or fledgling nearby.

You can tell that they're nestlings by the blue eyes (versus brown for adult). Even though they're close to full size, they're clumsy and can barely fly. The crows circling above are probably adults trying to stop you from kidnapping their kid.

Sounds like a shitload of wax finally clogged your hearing.
And the suction thing...of course it hurts.....

If you haven't been to a walk in yet, just put some baby oil in your ears, let it soak for 5 minutes-10, let it dribble out

This. Just hit up a walk-in clinic and get a flush. I did it yesterday because I had to get my ears looked at for an unrelated reason and they found some buildup. Takes like five minutes. Makes you feel like you have superhuman hearing.

While it can be wax or whatever else, it can also be an ear infection (something that often plagued me as a child) which can lead to deafness if not treated properly. If it lasts more than a day, go see a doctor to make sure it gets treated properly, whatever it is.

i have a question... regarding high school marks

long story short:

- i get 80% first term, 82% second term in Strength & Conditioning class
- during first & second term, i attend classes and perform well. i miss class sometimes, but barely
- i skipped like 3-4 of his classes to prepare for commencement & prom during last few weeks of school
- i go back to class this week and he drops me from 82% to 46% third term and coach threatens to fail me and not give me the credit for the course
- i am also a working student, so i apologized & told him straight up that i skipped his class in order to prepare. he doesn't seem to have a sense of understanding, and instead proceeds to give me attitude & bitch at me

final grades are calculated by adding the percentages of all three terms and dividing by 3, but is he allowed to do this (fail me)?
since i have 80% + 82%, am i in the safe? even if he decides to be a fucking whore and gives me like 5% for third term

any insight would be appreciated, thanks in advance

random question. Roundtable Pizza in Richmond, why are there two completely seperate Rountable Pizza franchises with identical menu items and nearly identical pricing?

Better question, why do they call the pizza place near DT roundtable, yet the only table in the place is rectangular ..... conspiracy

This just came to me today.

In Robert Greene's The 48 Laws of Power, he talks about Edison and Tesla. For those of you who have read the book, it's Law 7.

Even though Tesla was the innovator, he did not protect his inventions. Edison was shrewd enough to take credit for the work. Fast forward to 2013 and the story has turned into "corporations stifle innovation".

It's not enough to be intelligent. You have to be a good businessman as well. Tesla was a crappy businessman. He thought he would change the world on the virtue of science alone. The real world gave him a hearty LOL instead.

When I read here on RS about how it's hard to make money in Vancouver, I think about why they say that. And I came to a conclusion in related to my field that I think partially answers the question.

-If you can code, there are hundreds of thousands of Indians who can do your job offshore for half the pay you're asking. Or unpaid interns can pick up the slack.
-If you can be given an abstract problem, formulate a solution and code it efficiently, you can make good money.
-If you can do the above, but are also a good businessman and can lead a team, then there is no limit to your earning power.

My two cents.

I love the latest Playland radio ad where kid is like, "I want to get off, I want to get off....please, I wanna get off!"

**Not related to another thread here on RS, LOL, but it did cross my mind.

Anyway, the kid cannot "get off", but at the end of the ride, he says something in a deep, manly voice. Playland, making men out of little boys for over a hundred years, LOLOLOL.

I did the wooden coaster for Physics 12, and in the mid-ride photograph I was seen gripping the chair for dear life and my teeth clenched. That was the first and last time I rode the coaster. I did not turn into a man.

But I would like RS's opinion of my thoughts because it might be totally wrong and misguided. I hope I'm not shouting to an empty room.

We are fortunate to have one of the very few remaining wooden roller coasters in the world right here in our backyard, so to speak. You can tell your grandchildren about your experience.

Like losing your virginity, you'll learn to like it and like it a lot........... you'll start to miss that feeling of wanting to get off.

I was freaked out my first time on the coaster as well but the pirate ship was scarier

I don't think coasters are as bad as some other rides like StylinRed mentioned. Cause for coasters after the first drop it's pretty relaxing to just feel the breeze as you fly threw the course doing loops and whatnot. But for the other rides, pirate ship being one of them and crazy beach party the other you gotta endure like a whole 1-3 minutes of butterflies. A friend of mine went on crazy beach party and threw up near the end of the ride... Yeah it got pretty messy.

Not really racist!

Wooden Coaster is awesome cause you can actually fly out at any given time (or at least feel like you're going to)

I shouldn't have made that thread. Unfortunately, on RS, if you own up to your mistakes you still get pounced on. I have already said in multiple threads that I am going to take out loans and work through school.

'Sesame Street' creates first Muppet to have a parent in jail - NBC News.com (http://www.nbcnews.com/health/sesame-street-creates-first-muppet-have-parent-jail-6C10345061)

Those friendly, fuzzy Muppets from “Sesame Street” have helped kids open up about all sorts of serious subjects, from hunger and divorce to military deployment.

But they’re now tackling a much more unexpected issue: incarceration.

Meet Alex, the first Muppet to have a dad in jail. According to a Pew Charitable Trusts report, one in 28 children in the United States now has a parent behind bars -- more than the number of kids with a parent who is deployed -- so it’s a real issue, but it’s talked about far less because of the stigma.

That’s why the Sesame Workshop says it created the “Little Children, Big Challenges: Incarceration” initiative, an online tool kit intended to help kids with a parent in prison find support and comfort, and provide families with strategies and tips to talk to their children about incarceration.

Alex is blue-haired and green-nosed and he wears a hoodie – you might think he’s just another carefree inhabitant of Sesame Street. But there’s sorrow in Alex’s voice when he talks about his father.

“I just miss him so much,” he tells a friend. “I usually don’t want people to know about my Dad.”

It’s easier for kids to hear such things from a Muppet than an adult, creators of the initiative noted.

“Coming from a Muppet, it’s almost another child telling their story to the children,” said Jeanette Betancourt, vice president of outreach and educational practices at the Sesame Workshop.

Alex will not be part of the regular cast on “Sesame Street,” but he’s playing a central role in the online tool kit.

Children of parents behind bars often feel sadness, shame and guilt about the situation, so they need to know they are loved and that the incarceration is not their fault, said Carol Burton, executive director of Centerforce, a non-profit dedicated to supporting families impacted by incarceration.

“There are several million children impacted by incarceration in this country,” Burton said. “No one is paying attention to them.”

The project and its unusual subject matter have garnered a lot of attention, with some observers calling it a sign of the times.

"Congratulations, America, on making it almost normal to have a parent in prison or jail," wrote a columnist on Reason.com.

Although I definitely don't think the person should have hit the pedestrian, it's annoying as hell when assholes pull this shit.

Pedestrian injured in parking spot row - British Columbia - CBC News (http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/story/2013/06/18/bc-west-vancouver-park-royal-parking-spot-row.html)

West Vancouver police are hunting for witnesses to an argument over a parking spot at Park Royal shopping mall, after a person was hit by a car while holding the spot for a friend.

Police say they've identified the driver who bumped the pedestrian on May 30, but are now trying to determine if charges are warranted.

Const. Jeff Palmer said standing in a spot to hold it might be irritating, but it's not illegal.

"We certainly don't recommend people take on vehicles personally. But on the other hand, if somebody's standing there lawfully, a driver has a responsibility not to strike a pedestrian with their vehicle," he said.

"There are certainly much better ways to resolve a dispute over a parking space "

The incident happened in an area north of Whole Foods and the Cactus Club Restaurant.

Police say the pedestrian suffered minor injuries.
