I had to go to Kamloops late Monday night as a long time friend of mine messaged and told me he has very high brain pressure and wasn't going to make it, take care of his shit after and then he went radio silent.

I called his sister and we booked it up after I put my kids to sleep. We arrived to him just barely conscious in Kamloops ER. The CT returned a big brain bleed on the left side and a small one on the right.

The neurosurgeon operated on him and he now has a tube coming out of his head to relieve any continued bleeding, but he was mostly back to normal. We called his parents and they arrived and take over from me and I had to come back to my family and kids. The neurologists said he'll make a full recovery by a week and walking talking jumping like before, just with a suture in his head and minus some hair.

My friend is 36. He's had a troubling migraine for the last 2-3 weeks and he was given a checklist by his sister (nurse) and he followed through with it in his limited cognitive ability and went to the hospital. If he went a day later the prognosis would have been much worse. This was not a stroke as he didn't lose oxygen to his brain, but it could have developed into one if he waited any longer.

Just a PSA for everyone out there, age doesn't mean anything, there's no tough guy acts when it comes to health.

I can attest to this. Having personally seen a young father come into emergency with a brain bleed was tough on everyone here. Wife was left behind with their young children. Your friend is incredibly lucky to have come out of this alive and well. Vast majority of people don't make it. Liam Neeson's late wife is an example of this too.

Speaking of health - here's an illness that's more common than people realise and which many of you (in your 40's and 50's) are prime targets for (and roughly 1 in a 1,000 get it each year): Sudden Onset Hearing Loss: https://www.nidcd.nih.gov/health/sudden-deafness

This happened to me about a month ago - I got a bout of food poisoning and next thing I know I've lost most of my hearing in my left ear. I already have hearing loss and this has left my left ear in pretty bad shape - I can barely hear out of it now without my hearing aids. I have to get my hearing aids adjusted before I know what my new quality of life is but so far it's made life considerably worse and has me looking to accelerate retirement (and I've shelved any plans to buy a sports car for now).

Hearing loss is irreversible (unless it's conductive loss where there's some hope) and 38% of Canadians have some kind of loss and half of those people don't realise it so take care of what you've got. If you think you might have hearing loss you can get your hearing tested for free at Costco or any private clinic. You can even download an app (Mimi) that lets you do an at home test.

Personal PC's should not be affected, it's only a risk if your computer uses crowdstrike which is an enterprise level security software run by companies.

And it sounds like it's no longer an issue if you did not update your work PC's crowdstrike software since last Friday.

LOL, after 15+ years of always asking for a pack of salt for my order I would have hoped they got the message to salt their fries. And they ALWAYS have packs of salt to give out too - more so than ketchup packs so it's not like no one else asks.

The owners are such odd people - I imagine they are printing money with that place considering they haven't invested a single cent into the space ever (they might have replaced their chairs at one point), the place is always busy and they've only ever had a single other employee there (some old Chinese guy in the back).

There's a silver lining here in that you're conscious of it and making the most of it!

For years, my dad wouldn't admit there was anything going on with his hearing, and would pretend to himself that he could perfectly hear what we were saying. He would fill in the gaps and insist it's what we'd said, when it wasn't. This got really confusing for my 8 year old niece, when increasingly his responses to her didn't make any sense. Eventually she just stopped talking to him. This was hard on him because he and my mom had basically raised my niece in her younger years. After a ton of painstaking convincing that this was really no different to getting glasses, last year we got him -reluctantly - to try new hearing aids.

We got our dad back, and he got his granddaughter back.

My mother in law isn't far behind. She has it bad enough that if her right ear is turned to someone, she doesn't know when they're speaking, even if they're talking loudly in the same room. She also doesn't think she needs hearing aids, because she "still hears perfectly in the other ear" (she doesn't: she just pretends she does and makes stuff up as we talk).

My wife's insurance has some amount of hearing aid coverage and I'm sure my hearing isn't great anyway after years of power tool use without hearing protection: I figure I'll wear them a while and kinda normalize it around her so she'll have an easier time accepting these glasses for her ears.

^ there are studies that connect loss of hearing with accelerated dementia, if hearing is not corrected. Makes exact sense as you described in social settings. Hearing loss leads to lost of comprehension -> which leads to frustration of family -> less social interaction -> less stimulation ->social withdrawal / isolation ... increased deterioration of cognitive function.

Yeah, it's tough. A lot of folks have stigma attached to hearing aids (I did for sure before I got them when I was around 35y.o. - 13 years ago) but I've learned that pretty no one notices them and it's much more noticeable when you don't understand what people say (they think you're dumb or out of it or rude). People just end up not talking to you b/c it's too hard for them (like your niece). My FIL needs hearing aids as well but insists he doesn't want them and it leads to needless fights with his wife when he misunderstands her.

I also don't think a lot of people realise how much energy they get back by getting hearing aids (in the same way that glasses help you see). I work in a job that requires a lot of listening so not being able to hear well is exhausting - I have to spend so much more of my energy concentrating so I can make out what they're saying. I'm fairly certain that I couldn't do my job without hearing aids (also thank goodness for WFH).

Yeah, it's as much a 5x increase in the chance that you'll get dementia if you have severe hearing loss (which is me). The science is early days but it does make sense - the loss of stimuli leads to deterioration of the brain which is why they encourage seniors to be active.

I'm still kinda in my grieving period with this recent loss - I'm not sure how much longer I'm going to be able to work the job I have and I realise that I'm much closer to becoming deaf than I expected (hearing loss gradually gets worse over time). On the bright side at least I'm in a position financially where I likely could semi-retire if I needed to - I'm semi-serious about getting a job at Costco - and semi-retirement means more time with my family.

Oh yah, you mentioned that other factor, it can drive your spouse nuts if you can't hear. I mean in one sense we selectively hear our spouses anyhow .. :lol. But it would make me go nuts.

Surprisingly, I'm seeing younger adults <50 (or so) much more receptive to wearing hearing aids than grannies and grandpas. They have this 'vain' ness about them not being seen or pride but nowadays, they are tiny and all you see is like a thick thread sticking out, if you don't look, you won't even realize the in ear ones (vs. the over hanging ear ones).

I should get them early and be like the Bionic woman.

I'm not sure if the current generation will have it worse than past generations - in the past no one talked about protecting your hearing and most people would do stuff that would be considered unsafe. Like my dad use to take me and my brother to the airshow every year as kids and we never wore any hearing protection. Back in the day the guys operating the leaf blowers weren't wearing anything hearing protection.

Nowadays there's a lot more discussion about hearing health - my watch warns me anytime I'm in a place over 90dbs, there's noise cancellation in a lot of earbuds/headphones, hearing loss is covered as a workplace injury in a lot of jobs, and there's much more education about hearing loss in general.

Because loss is cumulative it can take a long time to realise it's happened so the construction workers, heavy equipment folks etc may not know they've got big problems coming their way. Last week my Uber driver noticed my hearing aids as he also wears them - 35 years old who worked in construction in Abu Dhabi for 10 years and he has bad tinnitus (ringing in his ears) so he needs hearing aids to suppress it.

There's a lot less stigma about protection with the recent generation. The toughguy image isn't nearly as prevalent as for the boomer generation.

I recently read an article about the reason why the millennials are looking so much younger than the generation before it and there are apparently a ton of reasons. The millennials are the first group of adults where smoking was no longer "cool". Heavy drinking was still common for the older set but it drops off considerably as you get to the younger end of the group. Everyone is much more health conscious in that working out, drinking enough water, not going to a tanning salon to give yourself skin cancer, wearing sun protection, are all much the norm.

It will lead to hopefully a healthier cohort as they get older, and a group that's much more receptive to aids, mechanical or otherwise. The stigma of hearing aids will be much much less.

Speaking of hearing aids, anyone have a decently priced suggestion on something that's more place in the ear, bud-like?

My dad is in his 70s and his hearing is garbage, and he has too much pride to wear a hearing aid. I've been trying to convince him to purchase one, but I need an option for him that is more discreet and can be placed in and out easily, something similar to an earbud.

A mid-step we took with my dad, was actually to get him AirPod Pro 2's, which integrate hearing aid -like function via Transparency Mode.

You can use a hearing test app like Mimi to generate an audiogram (they play a series of tones across frequency range, checking to how low a volume you can still hear it, and the audiogram is a graph of the hearing loss across frequency), and then you load that into the AirPod Pro in Accessibility Mode. I tried it on myself and it was really cool: it was like getting super-powers, I was able to hear conversations from really far away and through windows and stuff lolol.

It's not as effective as real hearing aids but they did help my dad enough that he saw the value. Like whereas before I would say numbers at him from across the room and he couldn't make them out. Afterwards he got most numbers right. And AirPod Pros are a fraction of the price. It eased my dad into the idea of having something in his ears and helping him hear incrementally better, before going all the way.

Most modern hearing aids do come in an "in canal" form factor that usually comes in skin colours that make it largely invisible.

For example: https://www.jabra.com/en-ca/hearing/enhance-pro-20

https://www.jabra.com/en-ca/hearing/-/media/82A2C244378144CBBE30BC791C849144.ashx?w=700

If that doesn't work then the AirPods Pro can be a decent substitute if his hearing loss isn't too bad (it wouldn't do the job for someone with severe loss but should be usable if you have mild or moderate loss). For reference:

My wife’s grandma was 98 and couldn’t hear shit, she couldn’t even hear the TV cranked, we said we’d take her to Costco and pay for everything take her there etc. and it was always no no no like this huge resistance to it, you don’t even leave your home! The least you can do is fucking hear lol

PRE-COVID, I think they had some fillipino's working at the back. I'm not joking.

I'm using plural because I distinctly remember there were 2 younger dudes at one time when I was there

Tbh not sure what flights you're seeing but I've NEVER seen a flight price on a third party site that I couldn't get booking directly from the airline.

I worked a bit in travel years ago although not as an agent but based on my understanding there's really no way to get a better price than the airline, they all book thru the same booking engines and same source of pricing and availability.

I booked through the sketchiest Chinese portal for a flight from Vancouver to Regina. It was half the price of what WestJet was offering on the website, and it was linked via Google Flights.

Had no issues with the actual company delivering me my tickets. Everything worked properly on the WestJet portal.

WestJet cancelled my flight tho. Fuck WestJet.

Back when I was a student I rolled the dice many a time booking through 3rd party sites. I've done quite a few of the big ones, Expedia, Cheapoair, Flighthub, Priceline etc. I think the major ones are really owned by one company anyway (Expedia?).

Luckily I've never been burned and never had an issue before but you do hear of horror stories here and there. I'd still consider if your travel isn't super time-critical like having to attend an event or wedding etc. That way, if there are issues you still have time to sort things out. Its the wait times having to contact the agency, then sorting out new flights if something goes awry. Ultimately, I think everyone gets where they need to go but the airlines can and do say "don't talk to us, talk to your agency" if you need assistance.

Not much you can do however when 100 foot flames sweep in at 15 meters a minute I think they said. Kinda scary to think that even a place like Kamloops etc. which is more dessert than forest could very well go up if embers and shit start falling on homes and you can’t control the structure fires

Usually with other companies I’ve worked for there was an option to opt out completely at the beggining of the calendar year and they would tell you the difference you’d realize in terms of pay by opting out

It depends if it's a flex plan or modular. Do you know?

If not, and it's simply an employer TRAD plan paid without credits or cost sharing, then no.

If it's flex, you can move those employer paid amounts to HSA/PSA or taxable cash.

If it's fully employer paid mandatory plan for EHC/Dental, with no employee cost sharing, you might as well stay in the plan for travel insurance purposes, and paramedical amounts, you're not losing anything by staying in the plan.

lol sorry man.

FWIW on that trip we stayed at the Lake Louise and had dinner at the Jasper. Jasper is actually a 4* hotel and LL is 5* so it makes sense that it's cheaper. Even then the LL is very overpriced (much more so now) but the view is pretty much what you're paying for. Worth it though, at least in 2020:

How much 3rd party liability with ICBC do folks here carry? I'm at $2m and noticed my brother carries $3m and it got me thinking if I've got enough or not.

This lawyer back in 2016 recommended $5m from ICBC and then even more privately: https://pushormitchell.com/2016/11/icbc-third-party-liability-coverage-how-much-is-enough/

Do your own research, don't take my word for it, but liability does not work the same anymore. Here's my understanding of it:

You can't be sued under the no fault insurance system, so the liability amount is no longer to cover running over a doctor, the only thing it's for now is if you hit a business, your liability is there to cover their operating losses while they're closed. You need this in Richmond, where you are bound to drive through the front window of a shop at some point.

So basically it's useless now unless you're totally incompetent. I don't even think you need $1M anymore.

Devil's Advocate: If you look at your breakdown of costs, $2M coverage is like about $30 if you're at full discount... so why not just leave it there at that price. It's not saving you anything to get rid of it. It used to be WAY more expensive when it was for personal injury coverage.

speaking of benefits, does anyone else find that benefits are shit now that practitioners are asking like $180/hr for physio, $135/hr for RMT, etc..?

back when these things were like $90-100/hr, a $500 or $1000 allowance was plenty, but now that they have gone up so much the benefits cover far fewer sessions.
if these things were not covered under benefits the prices would absolutely plummet. only because they are billed to insurance they just charge whatever they want.

My understanding is with the new system, there's a lot less need for higher TPL as it was with the previous system.

Essentially TPL was to insure you in case you hit someone and they sue you for lost wages, etc. Now since most of the time they can't sue, there isn't much use for TPL other than if you damage property. Even ICBC admits this on their page for TPL.

I guess if you drive into someone's house or a business, maybe? Do correct me if I'm wrong though. I carry 2 million.

+1

Getting out of control. RMT / Physio etc. Some practitioners can still be reasonable, but more often than not, the ones who bill directly often charge whatever they want, and you are out of pocket. I am careful on telling practitioners if I have insurance or not, just to test the waters.

Daaamn son what physio are you seeing for $180/hr? Or maybe I'm just out of the loop, started seeing a physio recently for the first time in like 20 years and it's $100 for 45 mins so about $130/hr same as RMT really. $180 sounds wild not that $130 doesn't sound crazy already. At least RMTs don't have the tip option anymore like before unless some of you are still seeing it. Once prices started creeping a few years ago the place I go to stopped the tip option all together.

Only if it has a direct ferry, otherwise it's a pain. My in-laws have a place on Saltspring and you go from there to Swartz Bay and then from there to Tsawwassen. It's a 30 min drive + wait + 25 min ferry + 30 min wait + 90 min ferry = minimum 3 hours to get to the mainland.

They look so quaint and picturesque. Plus if you wanted to come to the mainland it’s just a ferry ride over. Doesn’t seem so bad.

Pre COVID Bowen Island was a hidden gem for a easy getaway.

20 min ferry ride that operates every 45 mins, no reservations needed.

Once there it feels like any other island, completely away from the city

Nowadays prices for Airbnb's have skyrocketed like any other. We used to stay at these beautiful 1br loft cabins there for $99 a night before fees, now they're up to $225/nt during summer and they're booked fully the entire summer.

I'm very impressed with Sydney. As close to the ferry as you can get, beautiful quiet seaside town, 20-25 mins drive to Victoria as well if you need things in a city. Beautiful landscape. At one time, there was a ferry to take you to Anacortes/San Juan Islands area but Covid shut that down, but there have been talks of reviving it.

London, ON used to be quite nice small town, English flavour, half the city works for the University but I heard it's gotten bad in the core, poverty, homelessness, addiction, etc. They have good healthcare there though ... cuz UWO has a med school who is always looking for willing guinea pigs for new procedures and trials ... :lol.

Is Kingston any good? I heard they have water, islands, etc. But I saw a doc from CBC where all these small towns in Ontario are just filled with drug addicts ... it's the opioid thing.

To be fair, it's not as bad as I make it out to be. If anything, it's a sad state of affairs with increased homelessness and a few vagrants roaming about, but nothing like the Downtown Eastside in Vancouver or Skid Row.

But please, if you are ever visiting London, ON, understand it is nothing like London, UK. :lol

Speaking of short getaways, I have some vacation days to burn by myself since I have more days than my wife's work.

Thinking in a few weeks of doing a 1 night solo roadtrip to do Duffy Lake Loop since I have never done it before, maybe overnight in Lilooet. It would be mid-week to hopefully avoid traffic.

Any suggestions on cool places to stop at along the way and to see or places to stop at for coffee/snacks? It will be a very chill and easy going drive rather than trying to burn the entire loop in a day.

Lilloet - walk over "the old bridge", not exactly thrilling but then again its lilooet......if you want to 1up the thrill level, walk on the edge of it

Bring some swim shorts and a towel, hop into lower joffre lake. If its 30C outside, the water will still be 1C.

11 years ago, before we had distractions like kids and wives, me and my buds did a Top Gear-esque convoy road trip down the Washington and Oregon coast. We stopped over in Forks (setting of Twilight), got a nice beach house at Rockaway Beach, then over to Portland for Beer Festival and strippers, and back up the I5. It was fantastic.

But yeah that was several nights and with a few buds. They're all losers now who have to "take care of their kids" and would never be able to line up a few nights where all of us would be able to do such a trip again.

You gotta go at like 4am. That way you’ll get past Seattle and Tacoma and then you can head towards ocean shore with no traffic.

If you’re okay sleeping a night somewhere, start driving at 11pm and then rest when you past Tacoma. Then you’re ready to go for the day.

When you come back, As long as you return back to Tacoma/seattle before 2pm you won’t get stuck.

You don't have to go to Tofino if you want beaches. We just came back from Parksville a month ago, which is only 30mins from Nanaimo and they have great beaches there. I also heard Courtney/Comox has white sand beaches there. So if you don't want a three hour drive to Tofino, check that out.

We also did a trip to Cancun in April. 7 nights. Two adults, One four-year-old, One one-year-old (sat in our laps) at Sensira Resort in Cancun with Air Canada Vacations. $4,300 CAD Total, direct flight with air Canada, includes transfers, and one checked bag each. We used a site called Escapes.ca to book, it's pretty good because once you find a resort you like, you can check the entire calendar to see when the cheapest week to book is, so if you're flexible, it's a great way to get a good deal.

We just booked Honolulu for October and it was about $4,500 CAD for the flight and the hotel at Hilton Hawaiin Village. Mexico is definitely the best value for family vacations, but we like Hawaii more. It's more expensive, but Hawaii feels safer and more western.

Not really considering other places. I've done the Tofino/Wolf and Fog trip before. Washington coast too far for just one night; if I'm gonna stay overnight I would do it at the beach and not past Tacoma just so I can skip traffic.

I did the 4am drive before to catch a flight out of SeaTac when I did my solo Chicago trip, I still ran into traffic then.

No kidding. The older I get, the more I realize you have to experience life a long the way. Our vacation expenses have definitely ticket up in the past couple of years though. We're looking at Disneyland, but it's so expensive. A three night trip to Disneyland costs more than a seven night all inclusive in Mexico.

Ok, my dumbass just looked up what a tide pool is... My bad. What i'm thinking of was not that.

We were right on Parksville beach. and when the tide went out there were tons of areas with pockets of water. I guess this is not the same thing as a tide pool. There were tons of crabs all over the beach though (small ones) and sand dollars were around.

We just came back from Seattle for the Chris Brown concert and fuck, with the exchange rate and the price increases on everything, it's insane. You're adding 25%+ on top of already above Vancouver/BC prices.

Stupid example -- I love donuts, even hitting up a donut shop in Seattle ended up costing me $16 for 2 donuts. With the exchange rate that's effectively $8 per donut, when already the highest prices donuts in Vancouver are around $3.50-$4. It's a small example, but the same applies for eating out, drinks, etc.

What's the point in visiting a climate/topography almost exactly like BC, but for 25% more in costs? Pointless.

I had the exact opposite experience. I just did a roadtrip, graciously planned by Skunkworks, to East/South WA state (Kettle Falls -> Yakima) and OR (up to Bridgeside).

Aside from Red Lobster, which was a horrible mistake, every other food establishment we went to were small family owned resturants or (the only) diner in town. The portions were HUGE and even when taking exchange rate into consideration, it's still cheaper than local options. (ie. US $4.95/taco) Shockingly, again aside from Red Lobster (good thing they're going out of business), all the small town food was delicious and all Mexican food LOL. This is a stark contrast from the small town food I've tried in the Okanagan/Kootneys.

I agree that Seattle isn't worth it, but exploring WA/OR state is easily one of the best road trip experiences I've had.

I just looked up pricing. $6k for business class YVR to Hong Kong.

Got damn... I couldn't justify that. I feel like my stock portfolio would have to be at least $1M to justify that cost, so I still have a ways to go.

Yes we booked 3 business class tickets to HK for October and it was 18k almost 19k!! Stupid air Canada is nuts.

It was almost $6K one-way, 55,000 aeroplan. Fortunately got 400K points left.

My wife told me one of the oldest Michelin rated dim sum places closed down. We were suppose to go last year. We got a table but it was a shared table and then she gagged in her mouth and had to leave after seeing how disgusting the tea was…. Now I didn’t get to try it.

It’s that place upstairs close to dong ping gai… white building… uhh there’s a ding ding station right infront of it.

Does anyone know if my local MLA will help me out with an issue with the city of Vancouver trying to implement traffic calming measures on my street? A few KM away from me is a major issue with volume so they're trying to reduce that, but they're putting in one ways and diverters in my area that has almost no volume at all.

I've been talking to the city that's dealing with it and they're so dense. I've pointed out that the traffic study they did, showed no increase in volume in our street at all, but they still want to make it a one way and put two diverters in on the street and street over. I've asked for explanations and they give me this political BS answer that doesn't provide any explanation.

Will my local MLA help me with this?

Traum
08-02-2024, 05:00 PM
Unfortunately, I'm afraid it is a munipal affair, and you MLA is unlikely to step in to help.

I've dealt with a similar issue many years ago with the city installing speed bumps in a nearby side street. It was clear to me that the city staffer responding to the requests is just a pawn meant to act like the city would listen to residents feedback, when their real goal is to dissuade you from doing anything that goes against city plans. It is also her job to prevent you from reaching her superior to lodge the complain when you know she was clearly not the decision maker, or even the one making useful suggestions.

With it being a municipal matter, I suspect you might have a better chance of getting in touch with a city councilor. But don't get your hopes up with that either, because that sort of work is being done by city staff. All that the city councilor can do is to follow up with the relevant department on your behalf for a bit. Unless your complain align with his political goal, or something that is already on his agenda, you are not going to get very far.

IMO the only way you'd have a chance to make the needle move is if you can mobilize a sizable number of people to all file the same complain as you do to counter the issue at hand (implementing traffic calming measures). In my experience though, far too many idiots think these traffic calming measures are good when all they do is make things worst. And by the time stuff has been built, it is often too late / too costly to reverse course. And then some of the idiots will start complaining too, all the while totally forgetting that they supported this BS in the first place. FailFish

The stupidity that was the 45th and Elliot intersection comes to mind. They tried to throw everything at that intersection and just ended up going back to a 4 way stop.

For fuks sake. I guess I'll have to go door to door now and get signatures. What a waste of time.

I just can't comprehend why they need these measures on our streets when it's so far away from the volume. They sent me the traffic study and you can clearly see there is no measurable increase in volume in our area, no one cuts through our streets either. We're literally at the border of their designated zone.

The patronizing part is they have this other document that says how much community feedback they've gotten and how much input they have gotten from the community, as to say their decision is community informed.

It's just annoying when you ask them direct questions and they literally don't answer them or they say something irrevelant.

I guess that's not surprising though.

Traum

Did you find Clarendon not that busy until it was connected to 33rd? To me, while there are certainly more cars on Clarendon now, the additional traffic volume just seems like it scaled up along with all other traffic in the city, and the increase wasn't due to Clarendon being connected to 33rd.

Back in the day when there was still a house there (where Clarendon connects to 33rd now), I thought people just turned on Clarendon to 34th, and then turn again on Nanaimo to get to Kingsway.

Killarney Market also attracts multiple groups of older Asian uncles to just chill, chat, and smoke there outside Starbucks and at the Chevron station tire pump. It never fails to amaze me that those Asian uncles are smoking right next to the gas station like it's the most normal thing to do LOL~
