I think it's more at Futureshop cuz the employees are commission based. Best buy they just get straight hourly wages.
I also have good experiences going into futureshop and negotiating like half an hour before closing. They throw in a bunch of goodies if you just nudge a little, they will try to get you to pay for it but just tell them its all or nothing. lol. worked for me more than a few times.

Vancouver Public Library Named Number One Library in the World | Vancity Buzz | Vancouver Events, News, Food, Lifestyle and More (http://www.vancitybuzz.com/2013/12/vancouver-public-library-number-one-library-world/)
The Vancouver Public Library (VPL) has been ranked the number one public library in the world. The VPL shares the top spot with Montreal’s Bibliothèques.
The survey was conducted by scholars from Germany’s Heinrich Heine University Dusseldorf. They surveyed libraries in 31 cities around the world and our fair city came out on top.
“Vancouver is a world-class city and we’re extremely pleased and humbled to be recognized as a top world-class library,” said Sandra Singh, VPL’s chief librarian.
Libraries were judged on services, physical space, and online resources. They were also judged on how well they supported their respective cities.
Chicago, San Francisco, Shanghai, and Toronto were also in the top five. At the bottom of the list were the public libraries in Frankfurt, London, and Dubai.

Mikhail Kalashnikov, Creator of AK-47, Dies at 94
By C. J. CHIVERS
Lt. Gen. Mikhail T. Kalashnikov, the arms designer credited by the Soviet Union with creating the AK-47, the first in a series of rifles and machine guns that would indelibly associate his name with modern war and become the most abundant firearms ever made, died on Monday in Izhevsk, the capital of the Udmurtia republic, where he lived. He was 94.

Lt. Gen. Mikhail T. Kalashnikov, the inventor of the AK-47, holding a prototype of his famous assault rifle in 2007.
Born a peasant on the southern Siberian steppe, General Kalashnikov had little formal education and claimed to be a self-taught tinkerer who combined innate mechanical skills with the study of weapons to conceive of a rifle that achieved battlefield ubiquity.
His role in the rifle’s creation, and the attention showered on him by the Kremlin’s propaganda machine, carried him from conscription in the Red Army to senior positions in the Soviet arms-manufacturing bureaucracy and ultimately to six terms on the Supreme Soviet.
Tens of millions of Kalashnikov rifles have been manufactured. Their short barrels, steep front-sight posts and curved magazines made them a marker of conflict that has endured for decades. The weapons also became both Soviet and revolutionary symbols and widespread instruments of terrorism, child-soldiering and crime.
The general, who sometimes lamented the weapons’ unchecked distribution but took pride in having invented them and in their reputation for reliability, weathered the collapse of the Soviet Union to assume a public role as a folk hero and unequivocal Russian patriot.
A Soviet nostalgist, he also served as the unofficial arms ambassador of the revived Russian state. He used public appearances to try to cast the AK-47’s checkered legacy in a positive way and to complain that knockoffs were being manufactured illegally by former Soviet allies and cutting into Russian sales.
The weapon, he said, was designed to protect his motherland, not to be used by terrorists or thugs. “This is a weapon of defense,” he said. “It is not a weapon for offense.”
General Kalashnikov’s public life resulted from a secret competition to develop the Soviet infantry rifle for the Cold War. The result was the AK-47 — an abbreviation for “the automatic by Kalashnikov” followed by the year the competition ended.
General Kalashnikov, a senior sergeant at the time who had been injured in battle against German tanks, was credited with leading the design bureau that produced the AK-47 prototype. The Soviet Union began issuing a mass-produced version to soldiers in 1949.
The true AK-47 was short-lived. It was followed in the 1950s by a modernized version, the A.K.M., which retained its predecessor’s underlying design while reducing its weight and manufacturing time.
Shorter than traditional infantry rifles and firing a cartridge midway between the power of a pistol and the standard rifle cartridges of the day, the Kalashnikov line was initially dismissed by American ordnance experts as a weapon of small consequence. It was not particularly accurate or well made, they said, and it lacked range and stopping power.
It cemented its place in martial history in the 1960s in Vietnam, where a new American rifle, the M-16, experienced problems with corrosion and jamming in the jungles, while Kalashnikovs, carried by Vietcong guerrillas and North Vietnamese soldiers, worked almost flawlessly.
By this time, in an effort to standardize infantry weapons among potential allies, the Soviet Union had exported the rifle’s specifications and its manufacturing technology to China, Egypt, North Korea and Warsaw Pact nations. Communist engineers would eventually share the manufacturing technology with other countries, including Iraq.
The weapon’s design was also incorporated into arms manufactured in Finland, Israel, South Africa and other nations. The result was a long line of derivatives and copies. Almost all are referred to as AK-47s by colloquial, if inaccurate, shorthand

Probably old news by now, but Heinz is closing down its Canadian plant. I really hope we are not going to get Ketchup made with that high fructose corn syrup shit the Americans get. Sauce, you say? Too lazy to look it up............besides ketchup is a condiment.

Most of the people who got in that I know went through Kaplan (but that's a decade or so ago). The advantage of that is it helps you to focus on what you need to learn, also if you get high marks, you usually get hired next year if you want to tutor. On the flip side if you screw up I think follow up classes are free.

Might be a bit extreme - but it's almost like asking what if you have a legit driver licence....but you left it at home (or Africa.)
- Drives around town with gf's DL instead.
- Get pull over for speeding. Ticketed for speeding + failure to produce DL
- Can I dispute it?? But I have a legit DL at home!
- But it's issued by the same institution - BC/ICBC!
:rukidding:
Yes, nothing will happen if you don't get check. Yes, you'll more likely to get away with it if you use gf's U-Pass + your own legit school ID + both from the same post-secondary. But is it disputable if you do get check? Heck no. It's fraud.

I'm more curious how they'll prevent the device from falling over and snapping off the connector. A phone might be OK for it but an iPad (like the 1st-4th gen ones) are almost >1lb. If you accidentally push it, I'd almost be certain there's enough weight/force to snap off the connector.

The student's name must be printed on the reverse of the U-Pass for it to be valid. If he is caught with a card with no name, Razor will likely have to print his name on the card while in the presence of the person checking fares. That then puts his girlfriend at risk when she needs to use the card.

If Translink want, there are ways to track them.
If the company who developed the issuing system wanted to add an additional layer of fraud prevention while still using the present card design, they should have designed the vending kiosks to assign that unique serial to the student ID swiped to obtain the card. From that they could generate a simple database which could be referenced with ease.
Maybe that is already in place; I can't find any documentation to confirm it.
Lyndsey Scott - Computer Programming Model (http://www.refinery29.com/2014/01/60081/lyndsey-scott?utm_source=facebook.com&utm_medium=post)
http://static1.refinery29.com/bin/entry/7e0/x,80/1147957/rexusa-597924w.jpg
One look at Lyndsey Scott's résumé will have you concluding that she's made it big as far as the modeling industry goes. Her CV is brimming with appearances on some of the industry's most esteemed runways, including Gucci, Prada, Calvin Klein, and, yes, the pinkest of all, Victoria's Secret. She's also booked campaigns with MAC and DKNY, as well as a plethora of other glossy spreads. But, the five-foot-nine American beauty has another trick up her sleeve, and it doesn't have a thing to do with posing. When Scott isn't killing it on the runway, she's a certified computer programmer.
After graduating from Amherst in 2006 with degrees in computer science and theater, the model taught herself Python, Objective C, and iOS, and she's been building apps on the side ever since. But, she wasn't spending time on just any projects. The first app she released to the public benefited a charity called Educate!, which sponsors Ugandan scholars. And, for her second, Scott created a method for models to keep a digital version of their portfolio on hand to take to castings. We can imagine that's a lot of coding to do in between Fashion Weeks and go-sees.
In an industry where youth and physical appearance are so highly valued and celebrated, it's wonderful and refreshing to see Scott stand as a symbol of beauty, heart, and serious brain power in both the tech and fashion worlds. Want to read more of this mega-star model/coder's story? Click the link ahead. (PandoDaily)
This is why I love Victoria's Secret models, there is always something more to them than what meets the eye, they have brains. They always seem so approachable and just like your every day normal girl next door type, so sexy. She is so much hotter after learning this information.

A brilliant essay (http://www.nytimes.com/2014/01/04/opinion/mike-tyson-fighting-to-kick-the-habit.html) on addiction by Mike Tyson.

Fighting to Kick the Habit
By MIKE TYSON
LAS VEGAS — IT’S the time of year for resolutions. Lose 20 pounds, get to the gym, eat healthier, be more productive, whatever. But in a few months, many people will let these goals fall by the wayside, to be revived next year. I belong to a group who can’t afford to make pledges we don’t keep. I’m an addict.
For addicts, discipline isn’t something to strive for each new year; it’s necessary for every moment. Though it might be surprising — considering all the craziness associated with the Mike Tyson persona — one of my best qualities is my unerring discipline, which my mentor and first trainer, Cus D’Amato, instilled in me. Cus and I worked hard so I could become the youngest heavyweight champ in history; I sacrificed most of my social life as a teenager and for years pushed my body to extremes every day, just to repeat the brutal regimen the next day.
Cus died a year before I won my first belt, in 1986. With him gone, I had less of an incentive to stay disciplined, and I started drinking heavily and taking drugs. I finally retired from boxing in 2005. I didn’t want to insult the sport by coming in out of shape, just fighting for a payday. That’s when I became a full-on raging addict. Since then, I have struggled for sobriety, sometimes successfully, at other times not.
Even though I possessed incredible discipline when it came to boxing, I didn’t have the tools to stop my slide into addiction. When I got a chance to get high — boom, I’d get high. I wouldn’t call my sponsor, wouldn’t call my therapist, wouldn’t call my sober companions.
No, in order to kick it, I had to replace the cravings for drugs or alcohol with a craving to be a better person.
I’ve learned that being sober is more than just avoiding drugs or alcohol. It’s a lifestyle focused on making moral choices and elevating the things that make life worth living to the forefront. Don’t get me wrong. If I craved drugs or alcohol, I’d still give in. I could never fight those cravings. But when I am focused on doing good and being good, and practice the day-to-day mechanics of a sober, healthy life, I don’t get those urges to do bad things to myself.
Of course, I needed a developed conscience to back it up. Over the years, my conscience has saved me from descending into a life of total, selfish hedonistic abuse. Even when I was just an antisocial kid, stealing and jostling in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn, my friends and I would question our behavior. At my lowest points, I’d still be somewhat outside myself, thinking of the effect my actions had on other people.
Even with your conscience nagging at you, it’s extremely difficult to develop a sober and moral consciousness without a good support system. When I was in the prime of my career, I had a lousy support system. Greedy vultures were all around me, putting their hands in my pockets, using my status for their own self-aggrandizement. There was no way I could win with people like that in my corner. I am now very fortunate to have a wonderful wife and children surrounding me.
In 2009, I vowed to get sober after the accidental death of my 4-year-old girl, Exodus. I was determined to live a better life for the sake of my family, but the pain was so bad that I went back on drugs. Recovery is a drawn-out process, and without the continued encouragement of my support system, it would be close to impossible.
Strangely, times of success are most dangerous for me. When people tell me, “You’re great” or “Your comeback is amazing” or “You’re a god,” I could feed right into it and go get high. Hey, if my life is so good, how could smoking a joint be bad? How could a shot of Hennessy or a line of coke be so bad when everything else I’ve been doing is great — especially when there are beautiful, successful people feeding my ego and supplying the drugs? So I’ve learned that when people congratulate me, that’s when I focus on my flaws. That way I don’t allow my narcissism to fly sky-high and allow me to think that I can act out without any consequences.
I had been sober for five years when I had a slip and started drinking again last August. I had just finished the manuscript of my book, my one-man show was about to air on HBO, and we had a reality series in the can for Fox Sports. I was not accustomed to all that success in an arena other than boxing.
I have such a negative self-image that I just expect bad things to happen to me. And even though I hadn’t been using for five years, all that time I just didn’t feel comfortable in my skin. I was holding secrets from my loved ones, things that I had to get off my chest because I was dying inside. That’s the worst feeling in the world, keeping things to yourself. When I resolved those issues, through therapy and by talking honestly with my family, I felt like a new man. When I relapsed in the past, I would keep getting high until I was in a car accident or got arrested. But this time, after drinking for two or three days, I came back. I didn’t wait for an intervention. I just got right back on the wagon. After years of therapy, I had learned not to beat up on myself. I remembered that relapse is a part of recovery.
This is the best I’ve ever felt. I’m on the pathway to humility, fully aware that you can’t rule until you’ve served. I’m looking forward to a glorious 2014, when all of our best-intentioned resolutions become realities.
Mike Tyson, a retired heavyweight champion, is the author, with Larry Sloman, of the memoir “Undisputed Truth.”

I think the issue is, Rodman was just pissed the guy would ask a question like that. Rodman knows Kim, and if he said anything dumb, him and his men would get executed or whatever.
I thought it was a dumb question as well, what else can you say? "Yeah, I'll talk to my crazy friend and plead for a guy I don't know for his release. And essentially jeopardize my and my entourage's life."
You can't simply tell a person raised with different cultural values and mindset to simply have some empathy. The guy will go nuts and think you're disrespecting him in front of his nation.

He's got a few Children. In fact at his Hall of Fame inductee, he said in his speech that he wished he was a better father and husband.
On another note, for all you RS'ers that know your insurance stuff, I've got a question.
My insurance expired two days and and I chose not to renew. Is there anything I have to do now that it has expired? Was I supposed to let them know I wasn't re-insuring? Or return my plates?
I'm thinking I will probably end up re-insuring in a month or two, already hate transiting 1.25hr each way to class. Do I keep my plates then?
Thanks in advance.

You don't have to do anything but you are subject to risk now.
Since you do not have storage insurance, and if anything happens to your car, its tough luck.

Depending on your parking situation, you can get storage insurance. Other than that, no, your policy just expired and you don't have to do anything.

Might not be getting storage, sisters in town and I offered her the car until I decide to renew, so she might be putting on temp.
Oh ya another question I wanted to ask lol. She has an Ontario license; can she get temp insurance without getting a BC license? It will only be a month of insurance

You should call an agent.
Ideally, you could insure it but put her down as the principle operator. However, if she fucks up, it'll probably go against your premium.
On the other hand, if you put the car in her name, she'd have to pay for reg, plates, etc. and you'd have to do the same to put the car back in your name.

Simply because of the shortage of trades, you don't only earn more but you advance quicker in Calgary.

The GVRD has nothing to do with styrofoam recycling, that is strictly done n a volunteer basis from cities or private sector. Many recycling depots accept styrofoam, and soon many Encorp locations may as well.

They started it last year as a pilot project. For years, they used to do styrofoam and XMas wrapping paper, but only during the Xmas holidays.
I don't do the blue box thing anymore. In fact, since I moved to Burnaby, I've been taking the shit myself to Still Creek once every two weeks. I love going there to see the stupid things people do. They also take batteries, old expired propane tanks, paint, appliances, etc.
How's Abbotsford's recycling these days? They used to be the worst municipality for recycling in the Lower Fraser Valley and Lower Mainland. The Ozarks of BC when it came to recycling. Don't know where their tax dollars go......... oh wait...... it goes into their hockey team. LOLOLOLOLOLOL

MEDICAL SERVICES PLAN (MSP)
The Medical Services Plan pays for medically required services
of physicians and surgeons and for dental or oral surgery when
medically required to be performed in a hospital. MSP also
provides coverage for other health benefits – see Additional
Benefits section of brochure for details. MSP is administered
by Health Insurance BC (HIBC). For more information, visit
Health Insurance - Ministry of Health (http://www.hibc.gov.bc.ca)
Compare the monthly fees for MSP to a hospital stay in the US sans insurance. You'll gladly pay MSP fees after that comparison. Think of MSP as a fee that you have to pay in order to access the free hospital stays you're entitled to. Small price to pay if you ask me.
Here's the rest of the MSP brochure:

Ending school is a usual one. If you were covered under your parents, then some plans will cover to something like 26. You can check your school plan to see if it's covered. Though I think if you're a FT student you just call them to tell them that you are one and they waive it. But I might be wrong with that, so double check.

i think m3thods is correct. while in post secondary you're still covered under parents.
until 26 years of age, right?
While you guys are under your parents' extended health plan, take advantage of it. Go get your teeth looked after/fixed, go for regular checkups, etc. Your parents are paying for it, so you might as well get their money's worth. My children neglected to do this. Now that they are on their own, they are screwed. Except for one, who has coverage from work.
When I say your parents are paying for it, it depends on your parents' extended health coverage - what percentage your parents pay and what percentage their employer pays. In the end it's all part of negotiated wages and benefits.
The government takes care of basic health in this country, but it's not enough. Extended health coverage does the rest. I feel for those who either don't have a shared plan through work, or cannot afford individual extended coverage.
The Canadian health care system is not perfect, but compare it to the US and we're in pretty good shape. If you have a loved one living with cancer or a permanent condition, you will be thanking your lucky stars you live in Canada.
Having said that, there are so many people out there ripping off our health care system. When I went to get my new Care Card, I was told there are three times the number of care cards out there as there are people living in this province. People are using multiple cards by using aliases. After hearing that, I didn't mind answering all the security questions and going through the extra steps. I don't mind paying taxes for health care, as long as it goes to pay for the treatment of people who are legit, live here, and pay taxes.

The lens is being developed specifically to help track blood glucose levels for diabetics, as an alternative to the painful pricking-of-the-finger that diabetics must endure today.
And yes, Google is talking to the FDA about these lenses.
The lens has "chips and sensors so small they look like bits of glitter, and an antenna thinner than a human hair." Google is hoping to add tiny LED lights to it that could flash if glucose levels aren't what they should be.

So I went into kal tire today to get my truck tires rotated (which I bought from them at this location)
Everything went fine until the sales guy I was dealing with came out with a lug bolt and a lug nut off my passenger side front wheel
He tells me they torqued them to spec and this one bolt basically sheared in half, he then says it will probably run me $80 to fix
I was in a hurry and knew I had extra bolts at home but when I think about it I'm kinda like wtf..u guys fix it
He pointed out on the threads that they were slightly stretched and showed fatigue which I could agree with
Thoughts?

Too many unsafe drivers on the road nowadays. The road test is 99% about safety on the road I don't see how some people have a drivers license when they don't have sense of whats going on around them. But I'm glad there are honest testers out there.

Kal Tire was just being nice.
Broken wheel studs happen all the time and when parts break when doing regular maintenance / repairs most shops wouldn't eat the full cost of fixing it.
$80 = 1 hour labour = your car relatively easy.
My truck is 2 hours to re/re front hub and rotor to get at the wheel studs.

the thing is that that fix would have taken 5 minutes with my wheel off and the truck on a hoist
after spending $1400 on Tires and a rotation 4 months ago i just found it pretty chincy to nickel and dime me over a quick fix, i know it's quick i did it myself before for 5 of them

Probably discussed elsewhere, but I keep noticing that Chrysler cars' headlights go off when turn signal is turned on.
I researched it, and it's only on Chrysler cars built for Canadian domestic market. I started noticing it a few years back and thought nothing of it, but now I see it all the time.
Apparently other manufacturers have this feature, too.
It's bad enough with drivers not turning on their headlights at night.........

Some of the Audis do this as well, I think it's annoying to look at. And I agree with the Chevy tail lights as well - I'm always thinking the person put it in reverse. I always seem to get behind a Chevy truck on the ferries, too

I think the auto-turn off is only for DRL. (LED strips on Audis)
Yes, when I researched the topic, that's what it said. However, there are a lot of drivers out there who don't put their headlights on at night or just as bad, during dense fog. Newer Chrysler cars do this, but I wAnder if it's just DRL's.
The most recent vehicle I spotted with the headlight off during signal operation was a late model Jeep.

I bought some more LED bulbs off Ebay, i looked up the tracking number on canada post website and it says Delivered at 10:12 AM today. When i look that up on USPS website it says still in transit.
Problem is there was someone at home at that time and nobody rang the doorbell. I got home at noon picked up all my other mail and there was no parcel anywhere. No mail slip either to tell me to pick up at post office.
Did someone jack my bulbs? :lawl:
EDIT: Nevermind someone just threw it on my doorstep an hour ago. No clue what happened maybe delivered to wrong house and someone gave it back?

how well do you think this mall will do in the GVRD?
for those of you that have been to Cross Iron Mills, this will be the same concept...Cross Iron is quite a site to see....super packed, always busy, and located about 40 min outside of Calgary....just like how this mall will be 40 min outside of downtown Vancouver
The Bass Pro in Calgary is a huge draw...not sure how well it will do in BC
melloman

^^ I doubt it will take off but I also don't think it'll flop. Alot of people keep coming to the GVRD and more people means more business.
Yet you have alot of development going around. Brentwood Town Centre in Burnaby is being completely redone. You have the Templeton Outlet Mall (YVR) that is starting construction.
Compared to old projects such as: Queensborough Landing (outlet-type mall) or Ironwood/Byrne & Marine. You will always have people there, yet being as packed as Metrotown on a weeknight/weekend will probably be hard to match.

Health Canada's studies of food likely to contain acrylamide found wide-ranging concentrations in potato chips, french fries, cookies, breakfast cereals, bread, as well as other foods that are also processed at high temperatures such as coffee, roasted almonds, and grain-based coffee substitutes. Of the foods tested by Health Canada, potato chips and french fries tended to contain the most acrylamide, while lower levels were found in soft breads and cereals. Acrylamide was not found in boiled potatoes because the temperature during boiling is not high enough to cause acrylamide to be formed.
Acrylamide in not intentionally added to food. Rather, acrylamide forms from naturally occurring components in certain foods when cooked at sufficiently high temperatures.

Province endorses sweeping changes to liquor laws | News1130 (http://www.news1130.com/2014/01/31/province-endorses-sweeping-changes-to-liquor-laws/)
* Eliminate beer garden fencing at community festivals and entertainment events, simplify the Special Occasion Licence (SOL) process, move applications online
* Allow sale of mixed-spirit drinks at public SOL events and enable hosts to serve UBrew/UVin at events, such as weddings
* Allow spirit-based liquor sales in stands at stadiums and arenas throughout the province. More flexibility around licensing.
* Extend room service hours at hotels and allow guests to move more freely with alcoholic beverages
* Private/public liquor stores to be allowed to sell "growlers" ie big refillable bottles of beer & operate refilling stations.

On that note, have you guys thought of running the hose to the laundry sink?

Hong Kong: US bomb from World War Two defused by police
Hong Kong police have successfully defused a 2,000 pound (900kg) bomb from World War Two, described as the biggest wartime bomb to be found in the city.
More than 2,200 people were evacuated when the bomb was found in a construction site in the city's Happy Valley district on Thursday afternoon.
The AN-M66 bomb contained 1,000 pounds (450kg) of explosives.
The device is believed to have been dropped by the US Navy during WW2, when Japan occupied the then British colony.
Senior bomb disposal officer Jimmy Yuen said the disposal had taken a long time because of "technical problems when drilling holes into the bomb and because of the large amount of explosives inside it".
"Because the explosive inside was very sensitive, we had to cut the shell in a low-temperature environment, so the process took longer than expected," he added.

Where can I go to get art appraised and possibly sold, locally?
Specifically, watercolour paintings of Westcoast First Nations images.
Thanks.

I would suggest contacting a gallery specializing in the genre.
Do you know who is the artist?
The description sounds similar to Sue Coleman's work.

It is, yes. Limited edition and numbered.
Damn.....you're good.
It's on this list (Orca) but I doubt it's sell for anything close:

Coleman's value estimates are definitely not realistic. The size and number of the editions she runs and her strictly aesthetic style leaves her outside the realm of fine art. This essentially negates the possibility of her work appreciating in value. I hesitate to say it, but a professional appraisal could very likely cost more than the prints value. You could look into which galleries she has a relationship and ask for an opinion, though.
Take a look on Craigslist and Ebay, I would suggest scale (ie. 5"x7") may be more important than year of printing for her work.

I looked up the same ones and yes, the discrepancy in her valuation and actual selling prices is huge.
Although, mine is a bit larger at 16"x21" not including the mat/frame.

That will definitely raise the value. Best of luck with selling it, Flip! :)
