It's the BT stack on the laptop - most laptop BT stacks are not meant for high fidelity audio and more for peripherals like mice or keyboards. Phone BT stacks are meant to be used for headphones, so they have better codec support for higher fidelity audio streams.

There are very few I’d say after being there, we paid top dollar for the best seats possible and when I looked around, the seats you could get for $80 USD instead of $200 didn’t seem like that big of a difference

It may change if you were to go to a concert like that though where it seems like your seating position may come into play a little more given the perspective, but I think anywhere would still be incredible. It’s so all-encompassing that unless you actively have a balcony in your line of sight I think it would be fine

I quickly checked on-line and there was a Canadian On-line store that had it for $49.99. Got the price match. Damn!!

I'm sure westopher can agree being a kitchen guy. You should always run your burners at high not only before cooking, but post-cooking to clear all that crap on the grills/burners.

I'll usually run the grill high heat for 5 minutes (top down) after everything is cooked and off the grill to ensure it's totally clean.

I do this, plus use a spray bottle and spray grill with water. Like a steam cleaning, lol. Wooden scraper to get the now moist gunk off and then use pumice thing to get it nearly spotless. I then saturate paper towels with water via spray bottle and use the same pumice thing to wipe off any left over pumice. Being wet, the paper towel doesn't catch on fire, lol

Works for me.

So guys who own older Porsches (say worth less than $40k) what's the ownership experience like especially compared to a newer Porsche?

I've got an opportunity to get my almost F U money out now but I'm inclined to only take a little bit out and let the rest ride for a few more years. The reality is that I don't really have the time right now to enjoy a new Porsche and I've also seen how painful luxury car taxes are so I think I'd just rather buy used anyways. My wife is also pretty incredulous that I would consider spending $180k on a car

So my thinking now is to just take $25-60k out, buy an older Porsche for the next few years and let the F U money grow bigger to the point where wifey doesn't care what I do with our money.

So what's like a 2006 Boxster like (like this one: https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/988428509533799?ref=category_feed&referral_code=undefined&referral_story_type=listing&tracking=%7B%22qid%22%3A%22-1945555585119920138%22%2C%22mf_story_key%22%3A%227 522025664555039%22%2C%22commerce_rank_obj%22%3A%22 %7B%5C%22target_id%5C%22%3A7522025664555039%2C%5C% 22target_type%5C%22%3A0%2C%5C%22primary_position%5 C%22%3A18%2C%5C%22ranking_signature%5C%22%3A726552 9711267782277%2C%5C%22commerce_channel%5C%22%3A504 %2C%5C%22value%5C%22%3A5.1755214819925e-5%2C%5C%22candidate_retrieval_source_map%5C%22%3A% 7B%5C%227522025664555039%5C%22%3A111%7D%7D%22%7D) or something a bit newer like an early base model 981?

Traum

Personally, I would not recommend the first gen Boxsters (986) unless you specifically have a thing for them. They are really quite old now, and while their engines are more reliable than the 987 engines, they will require a lot of TLC and upkeep.

Between the 987 and 981, I'd say the biggest differences are:

- driving feel
- drivetrain reliability
- looks
- age (of vehicle)

This may sound a little cliche, but the 987 feels more raw and direct, while the 981 feels more capable and solid. I'm sure this is both a function of vehicle age as well as engineering.

As far as reliability is concerned, 987.1 cars (2006 - 2008) are supposedly prone to engine bore scoring in addition to the overblown IMS worries. The engine bore scoring issue seems to be a matter of when, not a matter of if. But how the car has been driven and cared for will determine how soon it'll develop.

I'll leave this here for you to assess for yourself how serious the issue is. After all, these guys are the real experts on the subject, and everything I can write would just be 2nd hand info.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7idZe6qAtg

A friend with a 987.2 tells me that his maintenance services at Weissach typically costs at least $1k, and goes up from there if more work is needed. On the other hand, I have another 987.1 friend who does all the servicing on his car. AFAIK, starting with the 981 generation, DIY maintenance becomes a little more tricky, and there are certain things that specifically require a Porsche-specific (OBD2) computer to help you do the job.

TL;DR: Buy the best one you can find in your local market. You have a lot of options given your budget.

Long version:

It boils down to "it depends." Do you wrench on your own cars? Do you prefer taking it to the dealer or an independent shop to take care of it for you? Or a combination of both?

I've owned two Porsches, previously a 996 C2, and now a 986.1 Boxster S. I can do basic maintenance and stuff and they are easy to work on, and lots of parts available, both factory, original parts, and aftermarket. Porsche is awesome for supporting their cars for a very long time. Both my cars have been trouble free. They will all have their weird quirks, but nothing that should leave you stranded, unlike an Alfa Romeo. :D

For $25k - $60K, you have some options, but ultimately, you need to ask yourself, what are you hoping to achieve out of the car? You can have a lot of fun in a base model Boxster, or a 987 Boxster like in your example. Buy the best model you can buy, but more importantly, when it comes to Porsches, buy the seller, and buy a car with a stack full of maintenance logs.

A lot of people give me a huge WTF look when I say this, but when I had my 996, it was hard to enjoy in the city. You're stopping every block in traffic and you're never really getting out of second or third gear.

Shop around and find a good example. If it's a short term commitment, find one that you can re-sell. $180K is a lot to throw towards a car, but if you have the means to do it, go for it. They are fun cars, and even more fun on the track. (Remember - only track a car you can afford to lose in a crash.)

I'm on the hunt for my third Porsche (not trying to flex or anything.) But I'm looking to get into a more competitive class with my local PCA club, and eventually get my race license to participate in club racing. My 986 Boxster is dual duty for track and street. I would like a 996 again, or a 997, but the prices are getting close to one another these days, but of course, there are a variety of factors that play into the prices. 997.2 prices are still demanding a pretty penny, and going back to my rule, it's a car I can't afford, or don't want to lose in a crash. Hard for me to boot around town in a 997 to get groceries and whatnot. It'd be a pretty boring drive and likely any wrong move will result in jail time or whatever.

Edit: IMS and Bore scoring - I'm not a big subscriber of these two items. My 996 was ok. And so was my 986. Bore scoring - most cars will have them, so it's a matter of when, like Traum said. I'd happily buy a 997.1 with bore scoring within limits, but that's just me, so buyer beware. Also, as Traum mentioned, newer cars will require that stupid PIWIS computer to work on. They are not cheap to come by, so you need to take it to a shop.

Edit 2: A lot of guys I go to the track with have over 180,000km on their 987 and 997 original engines, and all are original Canadian cars. Is there bore scoring? Yes, but these guys are wringing their engines to red line and over revving it like crazy. So far, so good. But take that with a grain of salt.

I was close to getting a Panamera as I had a really good experience with one a while back, and still really enjoy them, but insurance is a bitch, and they are total money pits. Porsches are the worst. Be prepared to be poor. Hope that helps. :D

After taking a 991.2 C4S out on a long-ish test drive, I am not terribly sure a Porsche or a 911 is in my future. The car makes 340hp and I never lacked power, but it was so composed that I echo what dukes said about it being a boring drive.

What exactly are you trying to achieve with the car?

If you want a track car, a more recent BMW M car or Zupra, or dare I say Mustang Dark Horse might give you better bang for your buck.
If you want a visceral, alive, an event every time you take it out kind of experience, something from the 90's might tickle your fancy more.
If you are looking for noise, get a V8.

The Porsche argument is a hard one. I know I just made a bunch of points against it, but deep inside I want to try owning one. If that's your case right now, then go find one based on Duke's points and make it happen.

I was told that the C4S might just be too civilized for me, and my entry really needs to be GTS and up. But like you, at 150k+, is it really worth it? The one thing with the C4S is, it reminds me of my F80 M3. The F80 M3 is tip top of what BMW could achieve for that generation, which Porsche meets with their basic car, so there's always that consideration that the Porsche chassis is just that much more competent.

Depends. What ruleset? What's competent, and how well rounded is the girl? What's the weight difference? Does the male have any training? Somebody with zero combat sport training but in decent athletic shape against a girl that's competent will probably get choked out if they're using bjj rules. If the girl only pulls guard, doesn't have good wrestling or takedowns, and hasn't trained any striking might lose against a fit male with some amount of combat sport training in an MMA match.

So what's like a 2006 Boxster like (like this one: https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/988428509533799?ref=category_feed&referral_code=undefined&referral_story_type=listing&tracking=%7B%22qid%22%3A%22-1945555585119920138%22%2C%22mf_story_key%22%3A%227 522025664555039%22%2C%22commerce_rank_obj%22%3A%22 %7B%5C%22target_id%5C%22%3A7522025664555039%2C%5C% 22target_type%5C%22%3A0%2C%5C%22primary_position%5 C%22%3A18%2C%5C%22ranking_signature%5C%22%3A726552 9711267782277%2C%5C%22commerce_channel%5C%22%3A504 %2C%5C%22value%5C%22%3A5.1755214819925e-5%2C%5C%22candidate_retrieval_source_map%5C%22%3A% 7B%5C%227522025664555039%5C%22%3A111%7D%7D%22%7D) or something a bit newer like an early base model 981?

If you can stretch the budget a tad, get a 997.2 C2S. Or 987.2 Cayman S if not.

Both have the traditional porsche charm, but with the modernity that you can still bag on and enjoy daily without worry.

Delaying for another few years only to buy a vacuum powered 992.2 whatever for 200k+ makes no sense to me. Life's short and the depreciation hit of that would easily cover a few 987s in the meantime.

The interview was about what sports you should put your children into and Dana said BJJ is the only sport that will have a life long impact for children. Especially for girls as this will help protect them against men growing up.

Then he said any 16 year old girl who is competent in BJJ would be able to defend herself against a man.

To me this means that in a street fight a 16 year old girl would be able to choke out a grown man and get away.

I know in BJJ weight and strength are usually trumped by technique, but i'm having a hard time thinking a 16 y.o girl could take on a grown man in the street. Maybe if she's a black belt in BJJ, but I have no experience with BJJ at all, so i'm curious. Maybe Dana was just being hyperbolic?

EvoFire
05-24-2024, 09:57 AM
I don't think he means that she'll be able to choke a man out, but given a chance where she's not completely knocked out or hurt on the encounter, she'll be a stickler enough that the assaulting side may find it not worthwhile.

It's a good defense against crimes of opportunity. If it's targeted though it will probably be a lot harder.

Eh, the original question was a sport for life long impact, not about street fights. I don't think BJJ is a bad answer.

A lot of grown men w/ fragile egos are going to overthink his comment.

He said that he's wrestled her before and she can totally take him to the ground. He said she would hook his leg and throw him to the ground. She doesn't know any BJJ, but he said it's not easy to wrestle with her. He did say he can out muscle her on the ground, but he thinks if she knew submissions he would be out of luck.

Not like a fight is anything you’d ever want to actively engage in, but in highschool there were a couple groups that always had beef, and specifically with one or two guys

One of the guys in question was a boxer, I’m sure totally amateur nothing even competitive but he definitely knew how to fight. Watched this guy beat the shit out of guys twice his size with some basic fighting experience.

Definitely an asset either way, and especially for women unfortunately these days

What exactly are you trying to achieve with the car?

I want a fun, nice weekend car that the wife or the kid can enjoy and which I can get away on my own for drives into the interior, the island or down the coast. Ideally, it's a drop top but I'd be down with a 911 coupe since that means I can take the whole family (wife and daughter are both petite). I can see myself trying my hand at AutoX but if I'm going tracking I'd either take it pretty easy or just buy myself a Miata/BRZ for that purpose.

I also prefer my sports cars fairly liveable so I don't mind the GT-ness of a 911 and I want my wife to feel comfortable riding along for a long trip (she did not like my NB Miata but could take a nice nap in a 992)

The Porsche argument is a hard one. I know I just made a bunch of points against it, but deep inside I want to try owning one. If that's your case right now, then go find one based on Duke's points and make it happen.

I think it's time for me to try out a few different cars like a Supra, an M2 (used, the new one is hideous) etc. I love the precision, lightness and build quality of a Porsche - I'm not sure the alternatives will speak to me the same way. When I drove a Lotus Emira I found it to be a bit of a flat experience and most people love it.

If you can stretch the budget a tad, get a 997.2 C2S. Or 987.2 Cayman S if not.

If I really wanted to (and the right car came along) I can stretch the budget quite a bit - just a matter of how much rope I want to ask the wife for. Mercedes Vancouver has a Boxster GTS that's almost EXACTLY what I've put a deposit down and it'd be $45k cheaper than I had planned to spend (https://www.mercedes-benz-vancouver.ca/en/used-inventory/porsche/718-boxster/2022-porsche-718-boxster-id32987201).

Or something like the 991T I shared in good buys: https://www.autotrader.ca/a/porsche/911/candiac/quebec/19_12820485_/?showcpo=ShowCpo&ncse=no&orup=9_38_38&pc=V5H%202N7&sprx=-1&modalXS=1

The more modern Porsche will be comfortable for long drives, and what I would expect to be liveable. But don't expect it to handle like it's prepped for an IMSA race. These cars are way more car than most of us can handle on the street.

If you are looking to do the long drives and be able to enjoy it with the family, I'd say a PDK is more desirable. PDK itself makes the car liveable and you just get to enjoy the car. Rowing through gears on the 10 Freeway in NorCal and SoCal is not fun.

I think you'll really enjoy a more modern Boxster or Cayman, but the drawback as you already know, is it's a 2-seater. The price point is not bad, but you can't fit your family in there.

I'm in town tomorrow. Come take a look at my rat rod Boxster before it heads back east. :)

Having said all that, I'm looking forward to a RS Porsche photo shoot soon. :troll:

Oh damn... that Boxster GTS looks good!

With this particular one, since it is still under the original factory warranty, I think there is a good chance you can get Porsche Vancouver (which is right next door, and also under the Dilawri umbrella) to certify it so that you can purchase a 2 or 3 yrs Porsche extended warranty on it.

Just want to mention this as a possibility LOL~

I think a manual is a must-have - the PDK is incredible and is the first autobox that makes me consider giving up a manual but I still enjoy rowing my own even when it's in shitty rush hour traffic.

As for Boxster vs 911 - I love the mid-engine dynamics of the Boxster over the 911 but the practicality of the 911 is pretty great in my use case. I've told the wife that there are going to be trips where it's daddy/daughter and no mom if it's the Boxster I get and she's just going to have to live with that.

As for seeing your car - that'll have to wait, still at Disneyland.

Does anyone here practice jiu jitsu?

I just heard a Dana White interview saying that a 16 year old girl who's competent in jiu jitsu could choke you the f*ck out and you wouldn't stand a chance.

Is that really the case? Like against a 30 year old man who is in decent shape, is that possible?

That's not necessarily true at all.

I boxed for 4 years, and have a bunch of friends in BJJ, some run schools here in Vancouver.

If you were talking a street fight, you'd never want to utilize guard, you'll get lifted and dropped on your head on concrete, or kicked in the face by whoever else is involved, you never want to be on the ground.

An athletic guy would likely be able to overpower a 16 year old in a standard fight, if that girl goes flying, picked up or dropped onto something, it's game over.

I think the overall thought process is that BJJ for girls is excellent in an environment of someone attempting sexual assault, not to be morbid. You try that with someone trained in BJJ, and you'll either be choked out or screaming with a broken arm in no time.

So I'd agree with that assessment from that perspective, but in a "street fight", no.

If you come to the noob meet, and if I can make it out, we can go for a drive in my M3. Keep in mind my car is not entirely stock. I've put about 10k worth of stuff on it, but no power mods.

You sound like you need a 4 seater minimum. Also depending on how old your daughter is, the 911 may only work for a limited time for the whole family anyways.

Only thing I use that's separate is Meguiar's Ultimate Leather Detailer for the seats.

I also do this - ONR is the Frank's Red Hot Sauce of the car cleaning world, that shit goes on everything (works great inside the house too). Pair it with CarPro PERL diluted to whatever ratio you need and you're all set for everything except the paintwork.

CNN reports that a 12 person jury (7 men, 5 women) reached a verdict in the Trump hush money trial.

Jury needs to fill out forms before announcing the verdict, for each 34 counts of felony of falsifying business documents.

A verdict will be announced within an hour. Thirty minutes needed to fill out the forms.

I think it depends on the jail. I've heard stories that some jails are super chill, guys cook their own food, play games, etc. It's not as bad as one would think.

Death is definitely the easiest way out I would suspect.

Some people deserve to sit in a box alone for the rest of their lives. That’s infinitely worse than the release of death is imo. Some of the worst criminals where their death sentences were fast tracked like Timothy Mcveigh etc. obviously got off incredibly easy in just dieing as opposed to rotting away forever.

But I guess in the states with a large religious population, people probably perceive death as the worse fate.

Honestly if I was gonna go rot in jail for 15+ years, I’d probably just kill my self anyways lol

They don't really have a choice, the Republican (or Democratic for that matter) nominee is determined by their own party through the primary process... so the voters have almost no say in it. Trump being the Republican candidate is based on him having the large amount of support from the Republican party itself.

People can be swayed. I used to vote Right (I would say I was "fiscally conservative, socially liberal" which is bullshit but I was too young and dumb to realize it). That was before the right became complete self satire though. After 2016 things just went off the rails, and if you're willing to stick to that side now? You're right, I don't think many people will be like me and consider things at a higher level than "me and my team".

It became acceptable to outwardly hate groups of people after 2016, and that drives a LOT of voting power. That's what they're counting on now, not just the non-idiots who are looking out for their own self interests at the expense of others. Hate gives them even more power.

To me, these are the possible switches.

NDP <-> Liberal <-> Conservative

It's pretty rare to go from NDP <-> Conservative or vice versa, ideologically they're too far apart.

The only time NDP can go to Conservative is if you're young/college and you're NDP then you because older and make more money, you tend to become more conservative, in my experience anyway.

This literally happened with an old friend I had dinner with. He was a staunch socialist in college and voted NDP through college, now he's a successful lawyer and he's literally volunteering with the new BC conservative party, lol.. I found that hilarious.

imo i think anyone can go from ndp to conservative very easily. if you hate the liberals you might vote conservative just to force a change of gov and not split the left vote. it doesnt happen very often but i think in next years election it will happen a lot. tons of people were obama voters and then voted for trump, and that idealogical spread is even further than what we have here with the libs and cons.

I have a Kinetico unit at my place. I have the RO system in my main kitchen and we have their KUBE unit in our home office kitchenette.

The RO system is a bit intrusive as it needs space to hold the tanks, but I never found it slow. The system refills itself efficiently, and you'd have to use a hell of a lot of water for it to be "slow."

The KUBE is more simple. You have two cartridges and it doesn't take up a lot of space and runs on demand. It isn't an RO system, but does filter certain things like chlorine etc. but it wont' correct any hard water situations. We've been happy with the KUBE since we move to Toronto 7 years ago.

my gf likes alkaline water which is basically just a pitcher of water with some sort of sachet in there that increases the ph. idk why... not do i care. i just drink from the tap even if her water pitcher is just sitting there next to it.

Why do you need to do this in BC?

Tap water is great here.

There’s nothing to filter out of our water.

The tap water in my 100 year old home (albeit portions of my water lines have been replaced) tested almost perfect PH for the 15ppm I was getting directly
Out of the tap.

15ppm for tap water is basically unheard of. I doubt that filter setup can even filter out whatever is remaining

Growing up in Vancouver, I've heard comments from "Oh the water here is gross" to "I won't even give my dog tap water." Vancouver water is excellent in comparison to where I am now. The water is hard, it definitely tastes awful, and it leaves hard water deposits in your appliances. You guys have it good in Vancouver.

We use Waterdrop from amazon. It's only one stage though. It comes out fast and it's an easy install. I've been meaning to get a three stage one, as it's supposed to be better?

I came from the water industry, but yes, one stage is great as long as it's not super fine micron it should never get clogged. 1or 2 is fine, I do want to ensure the fine stage is a Carbon Filter = removed all the taste.

RO - is pure and clean but it takes time and pressure to push it thru the membrane + reservior.

Chinese places sells it at 900 + 100 for 2 filters + install... but i can't see a difference when you order any amazon online.

25 years without parole doesn't mean he gets guaranteed parole. Just means he gets a hearing in 25 years. Plus in he's a Syrian National and (should) get deported.

People holding Canadian PR that commit a crime that is considered serious criminality will be deported after serving their time.

Serious criminality is when:
A) the crime has a possible sentence of ten or more years
B) their jail sentence is longer than six months

Latest example is the guy that caused the Humboldt Broncos crash back in 2018.

I don't think they get special privileges. The board that looked over the deportation of the truck driver above is called the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada.

"I can't consider humanitarian and compassionate factors," Trent Cook from the immigration division of the board, who oversaw the hearing, told Sidhu.

"My sole role today is to make a finding on whether the minister has established the facts that support their allegation that you're inadmissible for serious criminality.

Depending on the circumstances, even people who came to Canada as refugees may be deported.

Yeah that's why I'm wondering if it's different for refugees. You can't really deport someone if the entire reason you allowed them in is to get away from where you'd be deporting them to. So you take them under your law.

Other non citizens would be under a standard where they can just be booted out if they commit crimes

I don't know if that's true, but it would make sense to me

Hmm, I was thinking the opposite. You're a refugee, but still a guest. You should be on better behavior since you've basically been given a second chance in life.

Doing a search, it does seem that refugees in the past have been allowed to stay, but it depends on how much risk they pose to Canadians vs. how much risk they face if they were to return back home.

Honduran faced deportation after armed robbery charge although he had previous run-ins with the law. Was acquitted of his armed robbery charge because police acted out of procedure. Was allowed to stay afterwards.

technically the boat has the right of way. It goes by what method of transportation was invented first

FAA rules

(a) General. Each person operating an aircraft on the water shall, insofar as possible, keep clear
of all vessels and avoid impeding their navigation, and shall give way to any vessel or other
aircraft that is given the right-of-way by any rule of this section.

=======

Funny enough if a train vs plane situation, the plane would have to yield to the train too. The only thing the plane doesn't have to yield to is cars

I wonder if a dude with a row boat vs that motorboat vs that plane. Then the row boat guy can sue everyone else as technically they are supposed to yield

Seems there's some debate on this - as you said, technically the rule is the the boat has the right of way but not just by the book but whoever is on the starboard side has the right of way and the plane is considered a boat while it's taking off.

OTOH, I've heard that the area is considered restricted space that the boat isn't allowed to enter into and therefore the boat is in error. (Some has said this only applies when the plane is landing).

As well, there's also a rule/guideline that the vessel that is more capable of moving out of the way is responsible for doing so (eg. can't expect an oil tanker to move out of the way b/c they move so slowly).

In either case there's no way the pilot of the plane could have seen that boat - the plane is pitched up during takeoff and the sightlines means you're blind to whatever is in front of you.

That boat pilot is a huge idiot even if they are not deemed at fault.

Passengers don't wear life jackets - they're under the very small seats if you need them. Having flown float planes quite a bit it would have been really scary and probably a bit chaotic in the cramped cabin when they all went down - the pontoons were knocked off the plane so I would expect water to enter the cabin fairly quickly. You'd definitely would not have the same amount of time that you would on a commercial airliner to get to safety.

Try wearing a life jacket in an enclosed capsule in the water, and trying to get out the exit. Never mind if the exit is a few feet under water. Most people would likely inflate them before they get out. Lol!

ATC is going to have no control over pleasurecraft traffic. Rather just the aircraft flying in.

Who’s right in the situation? I have no idea, I think it may be a bit murky. Either way the boater is an idiot.

The issue I have with this argument is that there's no markings on any Transport Canada Maine charts that state this, not are there any markers or buoys out on the water that indicate this. The idea that it's forbidden for boats to be in this area also kind of falls apart when there's a gas dock that would be impossible to access without traveling through this zone.

Vancouver Harbour Air Control Tower

Built in 1973 it remains the highest air traffic control tower in the world, in the city with one of the world's highest levels of seaplane activity.

In 2009 the tower handled 54,741 aircraft movements, the 32nd busiest control tower in Canada. It is also the 8th busiest airport in BC and the busiest water aerodrome in Canada.

Check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IR5WEXsB6PI

from reddit:

There is indeed a restricted area in Coal Harbour ("Area Alpha") for seaplanes, but the restriction in question is that it is the only area in the BurrardInlet/EnglishBay/FalseCreek area in which seaplanes are allowed to land.

Although the boater may indeed be a moron, from a right-of-way standpoint, an airplane on floats in the water is to be treated exactly like any other powerboat.

And the onus is upon any power vessel maneuvering around or passing another vessel to avoid collisions.

Part of the shit side of being a float pilot is waiting endlessly to avoid oblivious boats that wander into your takeoff area - because they have every right to be there.

Just listen in to the harbour area air traffic control on a busy summer day and hear the quiet exasperation in the voices of the pilots as they are repeatedly warned by the tower about boat after boat after boat that gets in their way.

Sadly, in this case - there is a greater chance that the pilot and possibly Harbour ATC will get in more trouble than the boat operator.

It sounds like they do need to be cleared for takeoff. And if ATC is monitoring activity for takeoff, they should also be able to warn if a boat is suddenly entering the take off path. Not saying that would've saved anybody, but there's a chance.

I think all parties played a part here, but officially who gets blamed? who knows?

hud 91gt

Aren't float planes just visually self controlled by the pilots? That's why they don't fly in heavy cloud I thought.

An air traffic controller will give verbal (and in this day and age, CPDLC aka texts messages to those A/C which are equipped, along with ATC agencies that are equipped) direction to try and maintain efficiency within their airspace. In an IFR environment (instrument, aka clouds) a controller needs to give a certain amount of clearance between aircraft. If the aircraft is operating under visual rules, it’s the aircraft’s responsibility to keep visual separation from other traffic, but the controller will still direct. The separation required is much less for VFR aircraft, as the pilots are taking more responsibility.

Coal harbour is busy so they have a controller. They will direct aircraft left right up down to line them all up so they have adequate space between take offs and landings.

I never flew floats, my intuition is they may give some awareness to boats around but that’s about it. It’s a big area to land, the plane will pick a spot and go for it. I could be wrong but….

… but back to your comment. It all depends on the airspace the plane is in. A VFR airplane is self controlled in an uncontrolled environment, most of the lower mainland is controlled no matter the rules you’re operating under. In the high north a VFR airplane can do whatever they want.

Hondaracer
06-09-2024, 02:03 PM
Every flight I’ve ever flown on float planes, from the large harbour air planes to 6 seaters has had the GPS way points you follow to your destination. Not sure how much that effects your visual flying if any or if that is considered a controlled environment because you are flying a set itinerary?

Float plane landings in smaller planes are super cool, hand pumping the hydraulics to adjust the flaps etc.

hud 91gt
06-09-2024, 02:18 PM
Set way points are used in controlled (well all environments) VFR environments for point of reference. It use to be “Fly over UBC, join a long final” or something along those lines. UBC is a big place and for people not familiar not easy to navigate. GPS waypoints anyone can use, and are more specific.

It’s been 20 years since I’ve flown VFR in this part of the world. I’m so out to lunch with the rules I wouldn’t dare go fly in a little plane. Last time I flew VFR was 2008 in Nunavut, where you make up your own rules. Lol.
