Alzheimer’s sucks for both the person and everyone around them. I frequented a dementia ward for years and it was a very humbling experience seeing how people from all walks of life can end up in the same spot to live out what's left of their life.

I never watched Deb Hope when she was an anchor, but I hope she gets a regular stream of visitors even if she can't remember who they are. Even without their memory, people with dementia can still enjoy the feeling from having company and social interaction.

If you have the time to spare and feel compelled enough, you could volunteer at a care home to do social visits with the residents.

^ Lisa Raitt, Cons MP's husband also has early onset of dementia. Stats show 1/9 will experience some form or degree of cognitive loss, dementia, or alzheimer. Devastating for sure, hopefully, they will have a treatment before I get to that age or stage.

...

Making yourself a Do Not Resuscitate status might help with not getting old enough to get dementia.

Not rough overall except theres one section about 45 mins out from the intersection between ucluelet and Tofino they are doing work on that is pretty rough on a steep slope and single lane one way traffic only alternating. Depending on how low it is it may scrape.

I drove it in my e36 many times in the last few years and definitely had to be careful in the construction sections, but luckily that area you can really only go like 40 anyways. No damage or any real issues. Just attention. That said though I haven’t been since last summer.

Being Canada Day, I got out the Canadian flag side mirror covers. Put them on and merrily rolled along Lougheed Hwy. Was going a bit too fast and the driver side cover came off........ I did a 180 and went back to get it. Daughter who was in the car went out to get it. What kind of father does that? Make daughter play Frogger on Lougheed Hwy, gulolol.

I drove out there 3 weeks ago and the roads are mostly smooth. Construction is still happening in that section that sonick mentioned and it's still a one-way gravel road along the cliff's edge that goes up and down. I wouldn't take anything lowered through it, but for reference, there was NA Miata with stock ride height that had no problems clearing the section.

I think this is where people just need to get out to meets regardless of what they drive.

El Bastardo and I used to host stock and noob meets to welcome those who had pedestrian cars like their parents' Corolla or were completely new to RS and wanted to check out the scene.

In my opinion, they were very successful and a few group of people made a new set of friends. There were no burnouts, no fights, no tickets, and RCMP officers even attended to show their support and to promote a safe environment (This was just down the street from the RCMP office near Ironwood Plaza.)

All in all, those were good times. Leave the online personas and egos at home. Get out, socialize, meet people, and enjoy.

This is big news in Japan now.

A shooter assassinated former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Apparently, the guy brought a home made gun to shoot Abe while he was making a speech.

-very rare to see this happen in a country with very strict gun control laws.

Abe was 67 years old. RIP.

The CBC news video shows the home made gun as being made of wood, tape, and pipes.

US cruise ships using Canada as a ‘toilet bowl’ for polluted waste
Lax Canadian regulations create ‘perverse incentive’ for US cruise ships en route to Alaska to discharge toxic mix of chemicals and wastewater off British Columbia, report says

From the comfort of cruise ships, a typical trip to Alaska offers magnificent views of glaciers and untamed national parks, and visits to quaint seaside towns. For years, these draws have made cruises to Alaska the most booked US holiday.

But the journey to those pristine areas, which involves sailing along Canada’s west coast for two or three days, is leaving behind a trail of toxic waste, including within marine protected areas (MPAs), according to new research.

More than 31bn litres (8.5bn US gallons) a year of pollution is estimated to be discharged off the west coast of Canada by cruise ships on their way to and from Alaska, according to a report by the environmental organisations Stand.earth and West Coast Environmental Law (WCEL).

“There’s this perverse incentive to treat Canada like a toilet bowl,” says Anna Barford, Canada shipping campaigner at Stand.earth. “They’re just using us like a highway and tossing stuff left, right and centre.”

...

In Washington, more than 6,000 sq km (2,300 sq miles) of ocean habitat is protected in the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Puget Sound, near the Canadian border, and now classified as a no-discharge zone. Alaska requires cruise ships to apply for and receive permission to discharge sewage and greywater.

These regulations encourage ships “to hold on to their waste when they’re in American waters and then to dump it when they’re in Canadian waters”, Bissonnette says.

In Canadian waters, untreated sewage from cruise ships can legally be dumped outside a 12-nautical mile limit under vessel pollution regulations, which can often overlap into critical habitats. Meanwhile, treated sewage – which includes the waste from toilets and greywater from sinks and laundries – can be discharged three nautical miles from shore.

...

Not related but mentioned before, Alaskan fisheries are overfishing salmon stocks. Salmon that come from and spawn in BC rivers. They are ignoring conservation rulings. Our government is doing very little. Americans take, take, and keep taking. Where's the real Trudeau when we need him.......... not his pathetic excuse for an offspring?

Pierre Elliot wouldn't let the US get away with shit (pun intended) like this. The US are terrible, terrible neighbors (US spelling on purpose). BTW, we Canadians know how to spell. The English language comes from England, ffs. /rant.

So I’m not going to be driving our car for 3+ months or so. Insurance is under the wife’s name and she pays about $240 a month for insurance I think. So over those 3 months it’s almost $700

Would it be an idea to cancel the insurance and just put storage insurance on it? We’d have to put it at my parents place to get it off the street etc. just not sure about cancelling the current policy etc. we do the auto plan 12 currently with the automatic withdrawals

When does your insurance expire?

Cancel and put it in storage is the safest route. And yes, make sure it is storage in a garage and not on the street.

You'll get a prorated refund from when you cancel. Once it's cancelled, they won't deduct the monthly amount from your bank account.

The downside to full out cancelling your existing policy is that you'll have to return your plates, and then pay the plate fee when you do put insurance back on (storage insurance does not follow license plate). Not a huge fee, and you'll probably save more cancelling, but it's still a hassle.

Yep, I've had vehicles on storage policies outside for years. It just can't be on a public street at all unless being towed by a professional or towed with no wheels on the ground (ie flat deck). Irrelevant to the above:

My buddy lives in a newer townhouse complex in Langley. The parking infront of the garage can only fit smaller cars, anyone with a truck / van / bigger SUV has the bumper hanging 6" - 12" on the complex "road".

Some dickhead keeps complaining to strata, and everyone keeps getting letters that the car must be on their "driveway".
There's like 60 units, and about 15 of those get letters.

The actual road, infront of the complex, already has parking maxed out, so now theres 15 more cars that need to fit in somewhere, or walk 3-4 blocks to find parking

I would go on strata just to find out who it is, and make their life hell. Mind your own shit fuck face

The guy told me he honestly wasn't entirely sure but for liability reasons it'd be best not to have it overhanging at all. It wasn't a huge deal to move it, it just made it a little tighter walking around the front of the car, so I didn't bother checking.

From an owner's/resident's perspective, it sucks.

But, look at it from the strata's perspective - that car overhanging their driveway and onto the road (e.g. common property which is the responsibility of the strata) creates a liability for the strata. What happens if someone injures themselves from a car that's partly on common property? Particularly if it's not an actual resident, but some sort of third party like a visitor or a contractor? All of the owners suffer because that would result in an insurance claim for the strata.

Honestly in those scenarios the developer should have thought the design out better rather than with greed top of mind.

We built sooooo many townhomes where the concrete slab going into your garage was JUST big enough for a compact car. But then people fill their garage with garbage and then you move a sedan out onto thay slab, then the neighbours see and move an SUV out there. Next thing you know the end unit has a truck half on the road half on the slab.

The designs should be very clear in terms of whether you can park a vehicle on that slab or not. It shouldn’t be left up to strata law or some ambiguous interpretation of common property as to what can park there and what can’t

Municipalities set the parking requirements. In townhouse zones, that typically means 2 cars within a strata lot. So, the developer will build a tandem garage that's long enough to accommodate two cars. The driveway is usually an afterthought and only constructed as part of some mandatory setback from the common driveway.

Sure, it's developer 'greed'. They build to the minimum or design the property with marketability in mind. I haven't seen many sales brochures with long driveways to accommodate a full-size pickup with a hitch as a feature. Most customers don't care enough to demand long driveways, at least not yet.

Bought this recently on sale and hooked it up. Agreed seems to mostly catch moths and random flies, not so much mosquitoes.

Also annoying that it doesn't kill them, simply traps them. You'd have to wait it out for them to die before disposing, otherwise they'll simply escape if you open it up to clean out the bin.

They should, but at the same time if you're driving a vehicle that doesn't fit in a parking space that's a you problem. A little overhang isn't a big deal but I hate the nut sacks in crew cabs who park in the front row of a parking lot and block half the roadway so people can't get past their shitbox because their 2 brain cells can't be bothered to go double park in the back where they fit.

I don’t even think it’s “greed” per say but just poor design

Instead of leaving a 5-6’ concrete pad in front of the garage that appears to be a parking spot, just make the common road wider or design the layout in a different way that it’s impossible to park a vehicle on the concrete leading into your garage

First time going to the United Boulevard Transfer Station. After seeing it being built over the last two or so years, they opened up in March of this year. I was expecting all kinds of new technology and stuff. It's basically just a bigger version of every other transfer station out there. They open at 5:30 in the morning, so I went at around 6:00. Three vehicles there, including this small station wagon - young couple. Female was pretty darn hot. Couldn't help but notice the skinny jeans. Anyway, I hitched up the aluminum trailer and loaded it up with about 8 rotted out fence panels and other pieces of wood last night.

Grand total came out to 19 bucks. I was predicting 40 bucks, so big bonus. Nothing but super dried out mold and bug infested wood. Definitely going non-peak hours from now on. Saved me time and some bucks. I was expecting huge lineups. They have lineup cams on their site. At 5:30, the place was empty, so I thought they were closed.

Did I mention I love my all aluminum 14 foot trailer? Grated aluminum ramp is so handy. No wind resistance when up. Trailer is so light, too. Hardly notice it. Electric brakes hooked up to a Tekonsha controller. I used to tow a car hauler filled with racing gear and car up to Ashcroft with no issues. Ridgeline - the little truck that could.

What does everyone do for BBQ's these days? My co-worker is an older east indian lady ~45 who was ranting to me about going to a bbq and it sucked because there was barely any food and there was no alcohol. When she hosts a bbq everything is taken care of by her, food and drink.

I think that's a pretty old school way of doing a BBQ and it's quite a bit financially for the host. I told her that these days most people just BYOB at the very least and it's common to have a potluck bbq now.

What do you guys do?

Depends on the menu and size of the crowd but definitely BYOBeers and I’ll have a couple of bottles around for drinks if people want to mix one up.

If it’s just burgs and dogs then I’ll take care of everything. If it’s another couple or two, I’ll take care of steaks or whatever but I’m not feeding 20+ people a t-bone unless it’s a special event or something.

When I host, assuming it is about 6-12 ppl, I typically manage the 'main' dishes and maybe a side that will leave the group not hungry. And then ask people to bring any additional sides/dessert/drinks they want to have themselves. Most ppl like to bring desserts/sweets and so I don't tend to prepare that.

A few weeks ago I did 2 lbs of wings, and burger bar where I laid out all the fixins and let ppl build their own burgers, both with meat and impossible for the vegan folks. This was for about 9 adults and 5 young kids.

I will be doing DIY taco night for 6 adults this coming weekend, where I'll grill up a nice flank or skirt steak for carne asada, some beyond meat with taco seasoning, and grilled eggplant. Along with the fixins of tortillas, grilled bell peppers, salsa/guac/sour cream, and cheese.

In my circle, I think its assumed ppl will not show up empty handed, and will have drinks enough for themselves at the very least, supplemented by additional options by the host. And then any drinks leftover is left for the host.

And then additional food is upon request as a favor from the host.

Summer we usually do burgers and dogs and provide like potato salad and chips along with a few cases of beer. Typically I can guzzle back 8-15 beers on my own so if I’m going to be providing I should have quite a few lol.

I think going to a BBQ where absolutely nothing is provided kind of defeats the purpose of hosting a bbq? Lol

This is kinda how I think.

It's situation dependent, I treat a small dinner party differently than an informal "invite everyone you know to a bbq" The former will get fancy cooking, the latter will get costco frozen burger patties but as the host I'll always provide something (I've also found that through experience, for the bigger parties it's better to keep it simple anyways.)

I've been to a "bring your own meat" bbq before, I dunno, I find that very awkward. Everyone waiting their turn to cook their shit on the grill, and eating different stuff (I'm also pretty OCD about my grills so, I could never do that). Though it could probably work if everyone brought something that the host then cooked up and made a giant "sampler plate" that everyone could share.

Also maybe it's the way I've been raised, but leftover booze is always left to the host. Taking leftover booze home with you just feels so rude, regardless if the host provided any food or not, they still provided their home to have the party at.

It's a different culture. With Indians if you go to someones house they will stuff you with food and drinks. Things are changing with the newer generations by being exposed to western traditions like a pot luck.

Did a few BBQs this summer already with the new grill and house.

We prepped all the meats, sides, and non-alcohol drinks. We did a bring your own booze because everyone has a different preference to beers, and more than half the girls are pregnant/breastfeeding.

$250 covering for 10 ppl isn't too bad imo, we had leftovers too for the next day with enough food for 4 people.

Has anyone had to talk to a friend about not contributing to group outings? Like many of you, I never show up to an event empty handed. My go to for a BBQ is bringing tandoori chicken to fire up (which I don't mind grilling myself) and I bring beer or wine for the host.

But, there are always the usual suspects that don't seem to contribute with either booze or some form of snack/appy/dessert. It really irks me that every time they go to an event they don't contribute.

I had a buddy who would always bring cash to dinner outings at restaurants. Say he’d order a $7 drink and an $18 plate he’d toss in $25 like tax and tips don’t exist. I let it slide the first handful of times I noticed but one day after he pulled his stunt I had enough and called him out in front of the whole table.

As a youngster, I had the opportunity to be out in the waters around Uculet, Tofino, and Spring Cove, where my father moored his little commercial fishing boat. Back then, Tofino was a lesser known community with pristine waters with little to no tourists.

Try to get out on the water. The view of water from land is great, but the view from the water looking back at land is downright gorgeous.

I can just imagine how amazing it must have been for the sailors in a tall ship sailing those waters for the first time back when the white man explored the West Coast. That didn’t come out right. Anyway, you get the idea………..

I’m not sure the cops would request footage for this type of crime and even if they did, it could be overwritten by the time they do.

Does anybody know of Amazon sometimes hires third party delivery drivers, perhaps for prime day due to increased demand?

My delivery person today drove a U-Haul van and no Amazon uniform. After they dropped off my package my security camera caught him suspiciously walking to my walkway that leads to my backyard, they even looked straight into the camera.

A bit sketchy without an Amazon van, uniform, and seemingly snooping around my place.

Nothing close to what they do at depots and airports. That’s why all the bubble wraps and air bags.

Hate Amazon all you want, but their shipping is Uber fast. It’s only when Canada Post is involved shit gets weird. I have a Flex Delivery address, but I use it only if the item is expensive or I’m not in any hurry. Three to four days difference. I love Amazon Prime. Especially free overnight shipping items.

My whole family refuses to get anything from Amazon due to their treatment of workers. Me, not so much. Nobody putting a gun to their heads. They can work somewhere else. Like Canada Post, or, UPS, Fed Ex, or See it Later Purolator.

Intelcom is the worse. I'm not sure when Amazon started using them, but whenever you try to make a return on an item, Amazon will send Intelcom to pick up your item for you so that you don't need to do the legwork in returning the item at the post office.

While it's supposed to be the next business day, it's not always the case. Then they may randomly contact you via email when they're coming. It's sometimes on the same day of so you can't prepare if you're not home. Then majority of the time, they don't even show up. You can reschedule a new pick up day, but when you do, there's no acknowledgement whether it was confirmed or not. And of course, when the day comes, they don't show up.

A couple times, I complained about them to Amazon and they just told me to keep the item and they refunded me my money, lol!

Seriously, look at Intelcom's google reviews. https://www.google.com/search?q=intelcom++reviews
It's like a ton of 1/5 stars over the span of 6~ months. All legit, lengthy negative reviews.

Here in Vancouver, they use numerous couriers. They seem to be organized by region.

In North Vancouver they used a company called Wyngit among many. In Burnaby they had a company that used primarily unmarked white Dodge Cargo Caravans (they set up temporarily next to us, probably Intelcom). No uniforms for either.

Anyone have experience dealing with carpet moths? They started springing up in a small bedroom the other day.

Gave the room a thorough inspection and vacuuming today. Left for a few hours, came back in and found like 4-5, killed them, walked back into the room a few minutes later and found another 4-5.

I'll often see some flying around in front of a closet, but I can't seem to find any area that indicates a ground zero or eggs.

Thinking about getting something like this sticky thing and some sort of lavendar spray.

If you ever want to wonder where these types of morons are headed... take a gander at the /fuckcars subreddit one day... it's... uh... enlightening? There's an awful lot of people out there who think the answer to societal issues is to hurt their neighbours.

Perfect spot to entertain some finery of the 150euro variety

my buddy told me prices went up on the reeperbahn due to the lack of eastern european women (Ukrainian and Russian). apparently they are too busy doing something or another....

Finished the dash cam install today at this MJ dashcam. Chris was great! he did the job under an hour and everything was well put together again. no issues so far. I watched him and he was very meticulous in his work.

MJ dashcam is actually inside Vancity Vinyl's shop (chris works for these guys) so we shot the shit and talked about my wrap etc. All really really nice guys. They can do 4 caliper painting for 500 bucks! i might just go get that done too. Would only take them 1 day to do it.

I hate mosquito fucks. The only things I’ve found to work are massive amounts of deet and this thermacell stuff. We have a small can of thermacell in the yard and it blankets the area with enough anti mosqutio stuff that we can actually sit outside and enjoy this weather.

+1 on the Thermacell stuff - typically I get bit like crazy, but I can actually enjoy the patio / backyard in peace with one of these things around.

THERMACELL YO. they even have clip on's for clothing/pants

https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/thermacell-patio-shield-metal-edition-halo-mosquito-repeller-1591161p.html#plp
^this is the one i bought and its good enough to stop them around the deck. But it does have a weird, kind of musky scent that smells a bit like natural gas. They do not recommend you have your pets around it, so i keep my little guys inside.

Ive sent city of richmond numerous complaints about how they spend money on flowers and crap around city hall but wont do mosquito control when we literally live in a marsh.

just to add to the list of thermacell support, bought one of the packs after reading these comments n haven't noticed a mosquito, or moth, or any bugs for that matter

The refills are expensive though, might try to get some lavender to plant in a pot again, that used to work too, but I hate watering plants :lol

Inflation ... standard is $4.99 for now. That's what I'm seeing but I doubt it will get to pre-Covid prices of $2/lb. My guess is that $4/lb might be lowest.

Government - food has gone up 8%
Me - flat irons up 200%
Cherries 100%
Potatoes 130%
Onions 90%
Chicken wings 400%
Canola oil 170%
Flour 30%
Milk 30%
Eggs 35%

Add them all together and it gets to 8%
Sweet ass math

Safeway is supposed to have cherries on sale for $4.44/lb this week. But I am finding that a lot of times, Safeway's fruits suppliers are not at all reliable in delivering the goods. Sales start on Thursdays, and it could be Tuesday, and they still don't have the advertised fruits in stock.

Apparently the heat dome last year as well as the extra cold+wet season we got this year are hurting the local fruit growers a lot. Strawberries, cherries, blueberries, peaches harvests are all much poorer than usual.

^ I heard the same, but then I went to Emma Lea last weekend in Ladner for their "last chance" to u-pick strawberries and there were literally hundreds of people in the field and my giant bucket was full in like 30 minutes, every leaf lifted up had like 20 good berries under it... was starting to just get choosy about only taking the biggest ones lol

Best I ever seen for strawberry picking!

Funniest Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (Princess Auto)..........

I put the 09 Fit back on the road. Listening to Sirius XM, I heard a lot of buzzing coming from the back. Shit like this drives me nuts, so I pull into the parking lot at Lake City. I switched to FM, no buzz.......... I haven't listened to a CD in quite some time, so decided to give it a shot. To my surprise, it was a Powder Blues CD. I had the volume up high. This car pulls up next to me and older couple get out. They were dropping off their daughter (I think?). Anyway, they hear the music and they start to dance to it (Swing). Other people show up and they start to groove to the music. Weird, but enjoyable. The power of music, eh?

The song playing at the time was this one.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7zZa6O5IOak

I guess it was a burned copy (compilation) of their hits. 'cause it's not on the Uncut album, which I listen to often. It was kind of neat to see the smiles on the couple's faces.

No response from Reformed Design just yet

But so far

Vancity Vinyl - 4 calipers 500 bucks cash. They do not disconnect from brake line and its done at a bodyshop. They'll mask everything, spray it, and then bake it with IR

I was hoping to see if somebody will do a properly as in a full disassembly, remove the brake lines, mask all the gaskets, etc. But i think the cost will go up significantly if they do that.

^ well, we wouldn't show up all at once, right? By appointment time. Takes 1/2 day at least?

Wouldn't hurt to ask, if I can bring a group of 4 other friends, could we have a discount of 10%?

Just DIY the thing. Clean/prep. Mask the pistons/seals and anything that contacts the pad. 2 coats caliper paint, 2 coats of 2K glamour clear

Generally, how long is the warranty on paint work at autobody shops?

I noticed some paint is starting to flake off. It's clear coat underneath though, so most likely they didn't bother sanding down the oem surface during prep and just sprayed a new coat on top.

I think it depends whether it's an ICBC claim or not... they have their own standard for repairs that they hold shops to.

If not related to a claim... then you'd have to phone the shop you got it done at to see, they'd have their own policy.

I could probably see if Jason could do a group buy for us. If not maybe I could ask Jordan @ TheDipDr. I need my calipers repainted too, after track. I wonder how yellow brake calipers look on a red car.

Anyone have any suggestions on the best place to buy a shotgun at a decent price?

Cabela's, Reliable Gun, etc.?

I'm out the loop on this stuff, are trade shows any good in Canada for used firearms?
