A friend of mine had one (totally bussy) and it was constantly in the shop for little things. Took a huge haircut when he finally sold it.

Never owned, but did rent an S40 in Los Angeles which I did not opt for but was offered it because Enterprise ran out of cars. I can't speak to overall ownership but I felt that it was okay. Story cut short theres an orange S40 on FB for 4500$, test drove it, nice car, except for the obvious shaking on acceleration (low to mid concern) due to what seems to be a needed axle swap

I literally know nothing about these cars, dont know anyone who has owned one, etc.

Googlez says they can be expensive to maintain, but axles are 80$ on rockauto + 1-2hr labour per side for DIY.....

From personal experience on my newer car, parts are affordable for a "premium" brand but accessing parts can be a challenge (which translates to higher labor costs at a shop/dealer if you go that route for repairs). For example, my fuse box is located under the passenger floor carpet (which requires lifting the carpet up after removing some door trim), and the air cabin filter is only accessible from the passenger footwell which requires removing a few mounts (not accessible from the glove box). Neither task is difficult, but it's a lot more work than looking under the dashboard for the fuse box or opening the glove box to access the filter with my other cars.

It's just a platform thing. I can't imagine it would have been terribly cost effective for Volvo to design their own bespoke HVAC unit which will only fit in their S40's.

It's not even that bad, like I did mine in 2 hours just because I was learning exactly what to do.

I love my Swedish shitboxes. They're safe and don't feel like tin cans while on the highway. I felt that my SAAB felt sturdier than my Volvo.

yray and Matsuda have owned Volvos too.

The 5 speed and 6 speed on the S40/V50/C30/C70 feel like Mazda shifters - surprisingly good, direct but not notchy. Very easy to drive stick or teach someone stick.

They drive about what you expect of a compact executive car from the mid 00s.

The 2.4 non turbo is slow but torquey. T5 engine has meaty, girthy torque.

Seats aren't the best on these P1 Volvos, but the other models have really comfy seats - good for a road trip and my back.

If you want to mod your Volvo, ipd and FCP Euro have aftermarket parts.

IMO it's not really worth getting the S40, unless it's a T5 or manual. These came in FWD and AWD. If you find an AWD T5 with manual, those are actually worth putting money into.

That Shell is perpetually cheaper than others. I thought they were just competing with Super Save across the street, but some one in the M chats mentioned that's one of a handful of gas stations in the lower mainland that aren't always selling what they advertised, ie their 94 isn't always 94. He said he's seen knock from that one, the Shell on Garden City and Lansdowne, and one in White Rock.

Take it with a grain of salt. Most cars will be fine, but a highly tuned car would knock like crazy.

They served their XLB in a plastic takeout box, and even though I started eating them as soon as it was served to me, the XLB were already lukewarm -- probably because of the transferring from the steam basket to the takeout box. According to some foodie FB group post I saw, the Richmond place seems to be staffed by the same people as before though when it was still Long's Noodle House. I haven't been there yet since the ownership changed, so I can't speak to how good or bad it is now.

I'm pretty sure I've shared the story here before -- back when we were looking for an engagement ring, I asked my gf at the time whether she wanted me to buy her a nice rock, or put the money towards the wedding and our apartment's down payment instead. She thought about it for a bit, and decided that we should spend the money on the wedding and down payment instead. (It ended up mostly going to the down payment.)

I got her a ring with a 1.25 or 1.5C moissanite for ~$800. An equivalently sized (natural) diamond was in the $8k - $12k range. I think the one from Tiffany was close to $18k (or maybe $20k). Back then I think lab grown rocks were just starting to become a thing. But if it was available for $2500, I probably would have gone for it instead of the moissanite ring.

I think I spent around 7k on a diamond from Blue Nile years back and I can honestly say if I could do it again getting a lab grown diamond might have been the way to go. My wife doesn't really care too much about these things as long as it looks nice, and our circle of friends aren't rich enough to judge or even ask about if the diamond is real or not.

My wife’s diamond is from northern Canada, it’s also appraised at almost double what I paid for insurance purposes, so felt like a win even though neither of us are too big on jewelry.

Thanks for the recommendation. Out of curiosity, I'll get a quote from BBQ B Clean (they steam clean) but my Weber only cost around $1000 new, so $400 does seem a bit high. The Vancouver BBQ Boys website says $175 which seems pretty reasonable given the work they do.
