Isn't basic autopilot just adaptive cruise control + lane keep assist/lane centering? Which you can find in almost every car. Chevy SuperCruise/Ford BlueCruise/Nissan ProPilot Assist is pretty good, Hyundai/Kia/Genesis lane centering is really good, Toyota lane keep ping-pongs (last tried in 2020), and VWs you can euro mod lane keep to lane centering and get stop-and-go traffic assist (aka it goes to 0).

I didn't like the Mercedes style shifter when I first got mine... but after using it for a couple days it's pretty intuitive, not all that different from the old column shifters and more... elegant? to use compared to a column shifter. It's nice to have the console area free for other stuff too.

Is it a twist-type, column mounted? Imo that's the best possible outcome. I like it on our i3. Doesn't take your hands away from the controls, and doesn't take up real estate in the console area.

Let's face it, this forum are full of people locked into the way cars are designed in the 90's - round steering wheel, turn signal stalk on the left, physical shifter on the right, 2 or 3 pedals, physical buttons for heat/AC, side mirrors. With the exception of a button here or there changed, or screen sharper and bigger, every 'innovation' will be seen as unnecessary ... :lol.

I mean you're generally right... but some of this stuff was truly thoughtlessly designed.

E.g. moving to touch-based controls (whether that's a touchscreen or capacitive touch buttons): the driver of a vehicle has limited pools of cognitive & visual perceptual resource, and the more that can be spent on actually keeping their car on the road, the safer and better the driving experience.

Since neither touchscreen nor capacitive touch input methods provide any tactile reference, you have to draw from the visual perceptual resource.

The touchscreen is probably the worst, where it's a whole contextual UI that pulls hard cognitive cycles: you have to now even think about what wtf is on that screen and how to interact with it, before you can even carry out your intent.

Haptic feedback is completely unhelpful because that's just superficial feedback to confirm you touched something, after the fact. It doesn't help you aim, it only gives you a sense of satisfaction that yeah "you did a thing".

Ergonomically, there's not even a way to stabilize your gross motor system before you try to do the fine-honing of your fingers to the tiny ass icon in the UI, to do what you wanted to do. Operating little touchscreen buttons was already a pretty intense cognitive / visual perceptual feedback loop, even before adding that your fingers' local coordinate system is shifting as your whole damn arm wobbles in the air!

Compare that to a tactile input system (e.g. mechanical switches and buttons) which:
a) provide the physical references for your fingers so they can freely fumble and grope for the controls: you can eventually commit that to "muscle memory" and carry out your intent with your cognitive and visual perceptual system cut completely out of the loop. You've now
b) provide you a way to for you to stabilize your gross motor system before engaging fine motor actuation, because the controls have a non-zero actuation force threshold.

Just imagine your computer keyboard was a touchscreen. You'd have to go back to staring at it, and slowing down to 2-thumb input.

E.g. electronically actuated doors: one issue with this architecture is that the sensing system's prone to false positives, while simultaneously it isn't capable of higher reasoning... but you can't even help it out because you've been totally locked out of the decision making process: it is overriding you. It's a tripple-whammy of shittification.

The paradigm typically used for Lane Keep Assist is a better match for this scenario, imo. You basically want this thing to be primarily a warning system, and instead of preventing you from opening the door, it should just be some sort of tactile friction or nudge. Maybe add some damping to the door hinge, or vibration / pulsing to the door handle, along with beeps and light flashes.

The other issue is that you've introduced more points of failure to a safety-critical mechanism (getting the heck out of your car during a fire). It's totally ridiculous that a catastrophic event of a vehicle fire results in a single point of failure that causes risk of injury and prevention of escape.

And if there's a backup mechanical override, it's now going to be:
a) something you have to look for*, wasting seconds to minutes of time to escape**, and
b) not often being tested. I.e. at least if a standard mechanical door latch mechanism were to fail, you'd have detected that failure before you had to depend on it when a catastrophic event (like a car fire) occurred. Because you wouldn't have even been able to get into your car in the first place.
*I had no idea how to manually open the doors in the Mustang Mach-E, and google says there's a release somewhere inside the door armrest. Just the fact that there is no standardization to this across different vehicles is an issue, and it's not even consistent within a vehicle like in the case of the Model Y where the front and rear doors have different kinds of emergency releases.
**What about from the outside?? Even with the doors unlocked, how is anyone supposed to open the door and pull you out of the burning vehicle?

The MB one is like a wiper stalk, go down for D go up for R and the P is a button at the end. It's not bad but definitely doesn't feel manly or chunky which is why the AMG GT used buttons and then eventually a console mounted shifter in the 2019 and up version.

For this, a good designer mitigates the stabilization issue by leaving space for your other fingers to rest around the screen while you press the software button on the screen. Still not as good as buttons but better than nothing.

Think there’s a couple things after following it for a bit

Almost certainly there’s aspects of the hockey bro culture, I’d say certainly she came back willingly to fuck the first guy etc.

The testimony and how the judge outlined how her own story wasn’t consistent etc. and aspects of the story that were made public seem like she was intentionally egging people on, maybe it turned into more than she expected. The stories also say there is video of her around the time of the incident and she isn’t completely hammered etc. like she tried to claim

On the flip side almost certainly she was taken advantage of given the situation.

There are also things to consider like she had previously settled out of court with Hockey Canada, so was she after money? Did this initial settlement make her feel like she could squeeze more out of it? I’d say overall there was essentially assault, however the intent can’t be proven and there’s enough evidence that she was a willing participant to some degree. My buddy did his at 4 years, but he started tracking last year so he redid all his brakes, lines and fluids.

Otherwise I've just been bringing it in for yearly oil changes and door/hinge lubrications.

I've never really heard of proactively disassembling the brakes just to clean & lubricate them. I only do this when I'm actually changing the rotors & pads, or there's otherwise an issue (sticking caliper, pulling to one side etc).
My Speed 3 is still on it's 16 year old rear pads & rotors (117,000kms), I've never touched them and they're fine.

My Mazdaspeed 3 had it's original rear pads from 2009 up until 2015 when I hit the track for the first time and swapped for something more aggressive for the rear. Kept the original rear rotor as it was still mint.

I think it's enough just to monitor your pad wear (you might just ask them to do it, since even though it's a visual inspection without disassembly, it's kinda hard to stick your head behind the wheel to look at the rear pad yourself). That'll straight up tell you if your calipers are sticking or anything. Which totally could happen. But if you're just street driving this, maybe it's even fine to just rely on the squealing you'd start to get from them if there was premature wear.

Pads aren't *that* expensive that you'd be sad if they got ground down early (as opposed to tires: screwed up alignment that wipes out all your tread is expensive!), and it's not like you're going to suddenly lose your braking all of a sudden like you would on the track.

Hijacking this question how often do you all follow the manufacturers recommended intervals for things outside of oil changes i.e. Transmission, brake, rear differential fluids etc

I follow the schedule for coolant, because coolant can lose it's properties and become more corrosive over time.
My Mazda doesn't even show a replacement interval for transmission fluid (just gear oil) I just did it for the first time last year at 115k.
Brake fluid: I use a tester, if it fails (shows high moisture content) then I'll replace it.
My Mazda blew it's clutch slave back in 2013 at 60k, and since it shares the fluid reservoir with the brakes I effectively got my brake fluid flushed at that time lol, but even 12 years later it's testing clean.
For the F150 I had the dealership do a fluid replacement on the transmission at 95k when it went in for that programming recall where the 6R80's were apparently moneyshifting. Perfect timing.

Never trust any of those lifetime fluids or even modern day dealership intervals. I would say 7000km for oil or every 6 months. Brake fluid i do every 2 years and transmission/diff fluid i do every 5 years.

Most important is the oil. Modern day intervals are utterly horseshit especially when almost everything is turbo charged and thus even more susceptible to oil breaking down. Especially those German brands that advertise yearly oil change. Lawl, fuck you vw and your 25,000km oil changes.

Yeah the entire thing. We bought it used so it's just under 4 years old with 53k on it now.

I've heard a few different takes on it, the clutches are sticking, or the fluid gets dirty and there's premature wear. Either ways seems to be happening on the higher power and heavier cars. Not hearing it a lot on the smaller 4 cylinder cars

On just grab a coffee and slightly different than JJ Bean/SB, try Pure Bread, Breka, Paris Baguette. Daan Go is interesting but then you have one in Toronto. Nothing quite hits like a pineapple bun & HK milk tea like Lido.

Yep, they bought it in 2018 and their father is the owner/founder of Armando's Finest Meat's on Granville Island which has been around for 40 years. They may not be white but they're pretty much local considering their roots.

Oh, I forgot another one - Dumpling King is a restaurant on Kingsway near the Joyce Safeway (and in Richmond too). They sell their dumplings frozen and I think their pan fried King dumplings might just be the best dumplings in town - they're like a combination of soup dumplings and potstickers. My wife immediately could tell that I went to my happy place when I had my first bite.

I haven't bought them b/c I'm not sure I can pan fry them as well as them.

Looked at the worksheet, same part number, no revision. My advisor said it's so far been luck of draw. If you are lucky it'll last the life of the vehicle.

Also spoke with a friend who is a service advisor at PCR. Cayennes have the exact same issue and he said it's luck as well.

It's hit and miss with these cars, there's a percentage chance you get an absolutely lemon with Toyota or Honda as well, your chances are just much lower than with a BMW or Merc.

My SA has done over 10 for the G05 generation of X5. X7 are typically rarer cars so I'm guessing it doesn't come up as much. For a vehicle that sells about 5000 units a year in Canada, it's a pretty high incidence rate.

I'v been to Olympia on Denman, pizza there is decent, tried that but most of the time when I'm at a Greek restaurant, I'm there for the calamari, Moussaka, or roast lamb ... rarely do I order pizza.

yeah tbh i love all pizzas... even frozen pizza, won't catch me complaining.

last weekend i finally used my ooni koda 16 after being in the box for 2 years lol.

despite having a bit of trouble controlling the super hot temps, cooked 4 pizzas and they were all great. crazy how fast they cook.. under 2 minutes for sure.

Honestly, brown buddy Indian pizza joints are da best, they make the best dough, it's almost like Naan. Eg. Papa Dave's on Knight Street, Pizza Factory, etc.
