My sister in law was diagnosed with stage 2 cervical cancer early last year. Cancer does not run in my family so when we heard stage 2, we thought it was already spreading. It's a big restaurant with a massive patio, the most I've ever seen is maybe 6-7 tables full on a given evening.

I think the rule applies to any car (especially European.) If it's cheap to buy, you'll pay for it later in different ways, and for a variety of reasons.

E46 aint cheap nowadays. You've seen my maintenance spreadsheet and while not everyone has the same needs as mine, most of the maintenance there was pretty general for a 15 year old car at the time of purchase.

If that's what they're looking for why specifically an E46/E90? Up the mountain for normal people would suggest a need for AWD, but BMW xDrive isn't the greatest. If I wanted BMW xDrive, I would go with F chassis models.

Driving around Vancouver, an E46 will get you around 12-15L/100KM. Not worth imo. You'd have to do a bit of maintenance to get it to around 10L/100km. I'm willing to bet that not many E46s on the market have had the VANOS and DISA valve rebuilt.

3-5K over a 5 year ownership period -> go buy something else. Per our previous conversations, some people count tires as maintenance. A set of tires will run you 2K already.

If the debate is between E90 328i or 320i, I'd go with the 328i any day. The motor in the 320i is questionable in both E46/E90. In terms of "reliable" E chassis motors - M54 or N55.

They will run the 18" china tires for $600 summer and $400 for winters. Assuming the car didn't already come with 60-70% + tires.

Once the maintenance costs > $5K purchase price, they'd scrap the car. Ideally they want it to run for 1-2 years. Treat it as a $200/month lease for 2 years with a $1,000 cash-back when you sell it!

I saw a bunch of guys not used to high power cars being very ginger with GT4RS/GT3, and I smoked their times on the mini-autocross course that they have. My instructor and I also ended up getting a point by from a guy in a 911 Turbo lol. The kick plate skidpad exercise was my nemesis - I had no problems with the other portions haha.

Completely amazing experience, I learned so much from having the instructor there and basically giving me instant feedback. The road course is a little small, I don't think a GT3 could stretch its legs there properly. PEC Atlanta uses part of the Atlanta Speedway, that would be so awesome. For the time that you get, I think it is a great way to get to learn a car and also improve your driving skills.

I parked the wife at the restaurant on the second floor, it's really nice, plus the butter is shaped like Porsches.

All E46s in this range these days are mostly neglected and will probably need $5K-10K+ in basic catch up maintenance if your friend can't turn a wrench and doesn't have a space to work on the car.

E46s are great hobby cars for people like me who have a garage with the necessary tools, other daily drivers in the fleet, and a lot of patience and time.

If budget allows, consider the GT4 vs GT3 experience ; AFAIK it's double the price of the GT4 experience alone.

I recommend this because driving a GT3 Cup kicked my ass - it takes a LOT of adjustment to driving style and was very very humbling.

It's at Area 27 this year but only the higher level courses - you have to go to Mosport for the 1 day entry level one. Including travel it's about $3500-4k to do it. Probably better value to drive a E90 to death, or spend $6.5-8K for a well sorted civic.

I've lived the Modo / Evo life; was pretty sweet when the FR-S was around the corner from my spot in Yaletown.

Ultimately, car availability is spotty, you have to think ahead of time, and you're thinking about the cost of where you're going.

Until parking/congestion costs rocket, there's a benefit to having something of your own.

Yeah, if you can qualify for the full rebate, Model 3 RWD is currently the best deal IMO as well.

The car has just been completely redesigned and drives much better than the previous gen. Assuming it's possible to get a charger at home, you pay maybe 60bucks in electricity a month, 0 maintenance and even the superchargers in Richmond is only like 14cts per kw. A normal 10-90% charge would run you something like $7 and it's good for 200km+ in the absolute coldest days in our winter. With gas at $2+, $7 would hardly give you 50km even in some of the most efficient ICE cars out there.

Many are stuck in the old idea that EV is $$$, but as my Indian friend would say "if you see a lot of Indians DD-ing Tesla, you know that thing is cheap to run". :fuckthatshit:

They currently take EVO but it limits them to Vancouver, so no Burnaby / Richmond where leagues/golfing/friends houses may take place. I suggested Modo too.

Biggest downside to EVO is the day-rate, makes you stingy to pay $110 to take it up to Whistler/Richmond/Burnaby. But everyone also has a car these days, easier to bum a ride.

I'd feel stingy paying $70-80 for a roundtrip uber to DT / Suburbs despite saving $500-600+/month not having a car.

I still think the cheapest shit to lease nowadays is a Tesla. It just works out cheaper than even my beloved ratrolla LE and you get more safety / features than a cloth seat ratrolla.

Went to the Sphere on Wednesday, fuck legitimately one of the craziest things I’ve ever seen. Really hard to comprehend the scale but a venue like this has limitless possibilities. The resolution and scale of the screen is such that I’m not sure they could even do a top gun type movie on it for the sake of everyone getting motion sickness.

The inside has a bunch of “future” stuff with robots and AI which seemed kind of hokey but the actual inside of the sphere is totally amazing and really feels like a ground breaking, next level type of thing.

For concerts it’s not the entirely all encompassing thing like the movie they play there is apparently. The people I talked to who went said the screen is only totally on for about half the time and the rest the stage is illuminated like a regular concert so it isn’t this total sensory overload for the entirety of the concert.

all this talk about leasing cars. i've only ever driven used cars my entire adult life lol. i proudly drive my '90 civic si. i've owned this current one for almost 8 years now and my maintenance has been pretty minimal despite the car's age. let's ball park it at approximately $1000 per year. this would have been even less had i actually done some wrenching on my own.

car was cheap to acquire, still decent on gas, has actually gained in market value (could likely list anywhere between 6-10K), and still turns heads. most importantly, the car is and always will be enjoyable to drive. i love how it looks and the more i do to it, the more i love it! really can't name too many new cars that would give me the same experience over time.

and if that ain't enough, i still own my EK hatch :D

I've done used cars + 1 new. All owned for 5+ years. A concern I have is when it comes time for me to buy another car, will buying used electric vehicles be like it was when everything was ICE? When buying a used ice, it might be couple thousand in fluids, spark plugs, worn bushings and worn bearings. When buying a used electric, is it going to be a gamble every time you start up the car because the battery will work or it won't with nothing in between. And once it doesn't work, it's a 10k+ repair bill.

Continuing with old ice cars like 20+ year one, we risk junkyards not having the parts, and not being able to obtain new parts whether it's OEM or aftermarket. Or if you can obtain it new then is it a long wait that renders your car undriveable for months? Last back ordered part I had to deal with was a OEM motor mount. Took like 3 months to show up.

Anyone else with similar concerns about buying used electric when your history of cars is filled with used cars only.

Forgot to post here but on Monday I found another stray dog lol. I just seem to have a knack for this (hence Dog whisperer nickname). Anyways, here's the story:

I was outside for a walk during my coffee break. I spotted a dog walking around without a leash and figured maybe it was someone's dog just exploring. As I kept walking though, I could tell this dog was just by itself. Happy as a clam, just peeing on everything and sniffing everything else. I tried to get close to the dog but he kept walking further away from me.

Eventually, the stray saw another dog and started to approach it. From a distance, the other dog's owner yelled "Can you control your dog please??". I had to walk closer in order to tell her it's not actually my dog and that I'm just trying to catch it. Luckily both dogs were friendly and just ended up playing with each other. The other dog, Huxley, actually played a key role in me catching the stray. I deliberately played with Huxley to show the other dog I can be trusted. Once the stray saw it was ok and got close enough, I took hold of his collar.

After finally catching him, we put Huxley's leash onto the stray and the lady called SPCA. Btw, the dog's collar had no name or owner's information. Just a license number and SPCA's ph# on. So she calls, and immediately they tell her they know the dog. They go on to tell us the owner is notorious for being difficult to contact and that the dog gets out all the time. They also said that they were actually already responding to a call about the dog before we called.

Now, as I said, I was actually on a coffee break. Funny thing too, I was actually training a new person lol. So at this point I had already disappeared for like 45 mins :lol Anyways, Huxley was put into his human's car and the lady waited for SPCA to pick up the stray. I went back to work. I'm really hoping the owner will be more responsible but it doesn't sound like that's likely... really feel bad for the dog, he's a good boy. Friendly, cute and didn't cause any fights or chase any of the wild animals. Wish I could have stuck around to learn more about the dog...

The pricing for the seats varies a lot, but it’s hard to tell where you’re going to be if you’ve never been inside.

For us ours were almost $250 USD a peice whereas some of the seats on the wings which provide the full experience as well, just off to the side, were $70 or so. We wanted to make sure we really got the full experience so we got the first row on the 4th floor balcony which are probably some of the best for this movie. However if I was ever to go again I certainly wouldn’t pay that much

I was in Salem, Oregon for the total eclipse. No words to describe it. I posted my experience on RS back then (August 21, 2017). People who've never experienced it, won't get it.

You see video's of it but nothing can replace actually being there. Wildlife going crazy just before the event, shadows of leaves in the shape of crescent on the ground, then total silence, as all wildlife are gone into hiding (no birds, coyotes, rabbits - not that they make any sounds), etc. Total, and I mean total, darkness in the middle of the day. Then, the diamond ring as the sun peaks through..........

Yeah, definitely once a lifetime thing. Even then, you're running the chance of cloud cover. I was really, really fortunate to experience it. Felt like I was touched by god......... I shit you not. Makes you feel so insignificant - the power of nature and all things celestial.

It was well worth the drive down, which was decent, and the drive back (11 hours, lol). I went down with my two boys. They'll never forget it.

I was in Salem, Oregon for the total eclipse. No words to describe it. I posted my experience on RS back then (August 21, 2017). People who've never experienced it, won't get it.

You see video's of it but nothing can replace actually being there. Wildlife going crazy just before the event, shadows of leaves in the shape of crescent on the ground, then total silence, as all wildlife are gone into hiding (no birds, coyotes, rabbits - not that they make any sounds), etc. Total, and I mean total, darkness in the middle of the day. Then, the diamond ring as the sun peaks through..........

Yeah, definitely once a lifetime thing. Even then, you're running the chance of cloud cover. I was really, really fortunate to experience it. Felt like I was touched by god......... I shit you not. Makes you feel so insignificant - the power of nature and all things celestial.

It was well worth the drive down, which was decent, and the drive back (11 hours, lol). I went down with my two boys. They'll never forget it.

I remember the post you made and how jealous I was at the time. I'm still jealous and forgot all about it until now.

The whole office building went outside to see it back when it happened in 2017. The directors and managers just didn't care and they joined in themselves.

I would agree with MG1 it was an experience. But at the same time, I got a little bit of "that's it? from it. It felt like it happened so quickly.

Well we didn't get totality so that's why it was kinda like a "thats it!?" reaction from people in Vancouver.

But what do I know, I"m just a rube who's never experienced full totality either. I think I still have those glasses they gave out at work back in 2017 too. Wonder if these things expire?

When the eclipse reaches totality, you can look up without glasses on. The one I witnessed was slightly different. The moon covered the sun exactly. Very thin ring around the moon's shadow. Then the sun quickly shines on the very edge and it looks exactly like a bright diamond ring. Within a split second, the sun will blind the hell out of you, so you have to close the eyes quickly and look away, unless you're a Vulcan with a second eyelid.

The people (lots of them in the Lowes Parking Lot), were noisy, but during totality, it was so quiet, because everybody was in awe. Once the diamond showed, people started cheering - some crying. Really can't describe it. People next to us were in a camper - they were eclipse chasers. They mentioned it was, by far, the best one they've seen. Not a cloud in the sky. No wind and warm.

I saw on the news that there were small towns further along in the path, that had 100% eclipse, and people sitting on lawn chair with lots of space, like Belleview, ON. Why not plan to go there instead?

I think Niagara got noticed bcos some US TV show coined it to be the best location in N.America to see the solar eclipse, and then the hype just started building on top of itself.

I'm sure the local businesses appreciated the exposure though.

I heard an airline had an eclipse viewing flight this year. Don't know what the specifics were, but that would be kind of cool. No worries of cloud cover, but the experience may not be that good. Flight path issues? I have no idea how that works, but I heard tickets were very expensive.

Right after Salem 2017, I promised myself I would go to Halifax in 2024. Wow, time went by waaaay too fast. I've seen the perfect total eclipse. Some people never see one in their lifetime, so I'm kind of good with that. Thanking my lucky stars.

Yup.............. when I went to Oregon, I had lots of choices. Was going to go to the coast. Saw tonnes of cars parked on the side of the roads and freeway. I switched plans and went to a Lowes parking lot just outside Salem. Went in the Ridgeline packed with snacks and drinks. Lawn chairs came in handy. It was like a Woodstock thing.......... okay, exaggerating a bit.

Oh, went to the local post office, where I got a few Eclipse postage stamp First Day Covers with cancellation on the day. Special cancellation, too.

BTW, Canada Post has a stamp commemorating the eclipse in Canada. It's available in post offices now.

Happens all the time. People are idiots, they don’t take the train seriously. Especially in areas where we cannot whistle. Not all crossings are whistle crossings (Richmond for example) so idiots always try and run the crossings. White rock too… that entire promenade area is no whistle…
