hey guys, can anyone point me in the direction of a set of speakers? My gf's parents got a new TV and the speakers on it are on the back of the tv but the cabinet that it is on is very small and enclosing so the sound is very muffled and soft. Anyone know any good speakers we can buy to connect to it? Apparently we also need a splitter? since this tv doesnt have it, according to get guy at Best Buy

What's the TV model? A lot of TV's don't have audio out, except for Optical output.
Problem is a lot of speakers don't have optical in. My Logitech z5500's have it, (discontinued now, replaced with something else), but those were about $400 lol

You'll need something that is self-powered; I think the sound-bar type speakers would do well in this situation, where you just need it to be louder/clearer not so much a full-blown surround sound speaker system with a receiver. Plus they are fairly inexpensive.
Your new TV should have Optical out, these speaker bars will often have optical in; something like this:
If just need basic stereo: LG 40Watt Stereo Soundbar for Home Theatre : Home Theater & Audio | Dell Canada (http://accessories.dell.com/sna/products/Accessories/productdetail.aspx?c=ca&l=en&s=dhs&cs=cadhs1&sku=A6445019)
Add a sub if they don't live in an apartment: Sharp HT-SL50 100-Watt 2.1 Channel Super Slim Sound Bar with Active Subwoofer System : Home Theater & Audio | Dell Canada (http://accessories.dell.com/sna/products/Accessories/productdetail.aspx?c=ca&l=en&s=dhs&cs=cadhs1&sku=A6844909)

I've always wanted to ask this, but never bothered..........until now. Who/what's with the short Asian guy who's holding a mic, singing and dancing on the corner of Commercial Drive and Broadway? I first noticed him about a year ago. He used to hang out on the southeast corner for a few months, then moved southwest. The last dozen or so times, he's been on the northeast corner. I'm just curious - he certainly seems to be really happy. I just drive by, so don't know if he's any good. Does he sing like Asian songs or rock n roll?
Too bad Mike McCardell is no longer working. He'd be doing a segment on this guy, for sure.

If space is limited get a sound bar... they are the best investment you can make for the situation, amp and speakers in one... and get one with a wireless subwoofer for better sound.

Happy International Bacon Day, RS!
Bring home the bacon.........
The phrase “bring home the bacon” comes from the 12th century when a church in Dunmow, England offered a side of bacon to any man who could swear before God and the congregation that he had not fought or quarreled with his wife for a year and a day. Any man that could "bring home the bacon" was highly respected in his community.
In which case, I could never "bring home the bacon".

100-km Chinese traffic jam enters Day 9
February 25, 2013 by ajfloyd
http://p.twimg.com/AmstZz2CMAApYJl.jpg
http://www.cbc.ca/gfx/images/news/photos/2010/08/23/w-china-traffic-cp-rtr2hfva.jpg
A nine-day traffic jam in China is now more than 100 kilometres long and could last for weeks, state media reported Monday.
Thousands of trucks en route to Beijing from Huai’an in the southeast have been backed up since Aug. 14, making the National Expressway 100 impassable, Xinhua News reported.
A spokesman for the Beijing Traffic Management Bureau reportedly told China’s Global Times newspaper that the backup was due to “insufficient traffic capacity … caused by maintenance construction.”
The construction is scheduled to last until Sept. 13.
Stranded drivers appear to have few options when it comes to dealing with the jam.
At least some drivers have complained that roadside vendors have increased their prices to take advantage of the traffic jam. One truck driver said he bought instant noodles from one vendor for four times the original price.
Another driver, Wang, told Xinhua he’d been stuck in the traffic jam for three days and two nights.
“We are advised to take detours, but I would rather stay here since I will travel more distance and increase my costs,” Wang said.
This is not the first time the highway has faced such congestion.
A similar backup in July kept traffic to a crawl for nearly a month, Xinhua reported.

Yesterday, I took a wrong turn on Lougheed and ended up in Riverview. Got curious, so I drove around the property. Damn, the place is totally creepy and big. Abandoned buildings and houses look like something straight out of a horror movie. I was totally scared when I got up to the large brick building with broken, boarded up windows. I was expecting the girl from Ring to creep up the passenger window. I shit you not, it was scary. I think we should have a Revscene mini meet there just before dusk on a rainy day.
Funny thing was up higher, there was a daycare centre of some kind. WTF? I wouldn't send my kids there. I'm down for some haunted meets.
Edit: NVM this was not the thread but still worth reading if bricks need to be shat. Wonder whatever happened to that thread...

Great, I'm in. We get jtrinh to come along, too. We abduct him and tie him up in one of those electric chairs overnight. I imagine they performed lobotomy at Riverview.
Actually, I just looked up Riverview. It was called Essondale at one point. I remember that now. It was an asylum - state of the art (if there's such a thing).
About 80 buildings were eventually built at Riverview, which reached a peak population of 4,726 patients and about 2,200 staff in 1955.
Riverview was a small, self-sufficient city then, with its own fire hall, post office, bus station, bowling alley, cinema, cemetery, bakery, chapel, boiler house and soccer and baseball fields.
There were parades and picnics and sports days held on the grounds — all attended by large crowds.
The era also saw the use of the first psychiatric drug, chlorpromazine, used at Riverview in 1954, which replaced shock treatment therapy for severe depression and lobotomies for schizophrenia, mania and psychotic disorders. The use of anti-psychotic and tranquillizing drugs transformed therapies, allowing patients and doctors to realize mental illness was not untreatable.

So, I've been doing a lot of research on the Balkan wars of the 90s and was shocked to see how much ill will there is between Bosnians and Croats, Croats and Serbs, Serbs and Albanians, Serbs and Bosnians...even today, fuelled by centuries-old arguments.
I know there's a sizeable Balkan community here in Metro Vancouver, and I'm wondering if that same hatred and those same divisions exist here. I know there were Croatians and Serbs living in Canada who moved back to Europe to enlist in the military, out of nationalism.

There is an excellent documentary from the ESPN 30 for 30 on two basketball players who made the NBA one from Croatia and one from Serbia, from my understanding the majority of the modern day hatred was from the collapse of the former Yugoslavia and the civil war that followed, under the united Yugoslavia people were still neighborly and even friends in many cases but as soon as it fell apart friends were killing friends etc
And yea I've ran into Croats here etc so still have a hatred on for Serbs and they don't really have a direct connection to it

That's very sad. There were some Balkanites in my grade (2 Serbs, a Croat and a Bosnian) and they seemed to get along just fine.
We will have evolved as a society only when we can see each other as human beings. And yes, that includes the Mainlanders vs. Hongers horse that has been beaten to death on RS.

what i dont understand from places like yugoslavia, africa is how people who have lived thousands of years next to each other, intermarried, share common cultural traits and languages, and resemble each other can STILL hate each other enough to kill each other.
i guess in yugoslavia's case, tito's death really fucked the country up whereas in africa they are still dealing with tribalism and a post colonial society but still.

In Kelowna we have 2 main cab companies. Yellow Cabs (all non-english-speaking brown guys), and White Checkmate Cabs. I only take Checkmate Cabs and 80% of their drivers are former eastern europeans. Many of them are from the former Yugoslavia. It is pretty interesting listening to them talk about the war, how things used to be, and those fucking Serbians. Some of the guys get pretty fired up. They all say that Yugoslavia was the most beautiful place in the world prior to the war.
And on a related note, Sid Vicious, just look at Ireland. Massive guerrilla civil war not between people from africa or a lesser country, but in a modern first world country very closely related to England -> Canada.

With all these high density neighbourhood bullshit (i.e// building a shit ton of homes on 2 lots), traffic is becoming ridiculous in many areas of Vancouver.
You'll have to literally look down the block to see an oncoming car, with parked cars on either side, leaving only one car passing through.
Anyways, I never thought or was the guy to rage at someone. But almost exploded today. I could see how road rage happens now. It can happen too easy. I can forsee many more road rage incidents with more high density & backyard homes being built.

you build row homes and townhouses with no parking, or a 1 car garage, then people rent out the basement and the coach home, 5+ cars for a house that might have one non-street spot? its stupid

Agreed, maybe these councillors signed off on all these developments because in their evil scheme of things, they are pushing people to bike?
Yeah...I noticed one area had 10 homes being built on 2 above average lots..in East Van. You factor in 2 cars on average for home, people are going to be fighting for spots.
Those rice buckets that people use? haha, maybe 100lb blocks of cement will be used  - That ought to save a spot...

They are pushing people to ride transit and walk everywhere.
This is why every development is plopped next to a grocer/pharm/subway/mcdonalds/walmart/starbucks/winners/homedepot/ANYWHEREELSEWHITEPEOPLESHOP.
stuff people into project-style housing nobody can afford, make them ride over-priced transit to a job that doesn't pay enough, have everyone shop at the same 10 stores that are generic and boring, wash....rinse....repeat. Every neighbourhood is the same. Everyone takes comfort in the status quo.

I noticed that driving around in east van. every side street is basically 3 cars wide. one on each side for parking, and one down the middle for single lane traffic, no bike lane, and no sidewalks. In kelowna we call those alleys lol.
In Kelowna, I believe there is a bylaw requiring all dwellings built to have a minimum of like 3 parking spots, and +1 for every suite.

At this moment i have 103,000 points and within their guidelines 65,000 is considered good for "long haul europe" with a maximum ticket price of $1300
so i found two basically in the same price range as they all are for "117,000" proceed to checkout and the flights themselves are valued at a total of 114 800 then "taxes and surchages" were an additional $1,192 or 119,000 points...
So the amount of points advertised doesnt even pay for half the ticket because of the additional fees?...

This isn't going to be a preachy rant, but I just want to say if you are planning on getting a new dog as a pet, DO NOT BUY FROM A PET STORE. If you DO buy a breeder, do NOT do so without visiting the place first. Most likely though, there are thousands of dogs of all ages and types who already need a home. Take one of them first. Let someone else buy an expensive breed.
These 9 breeding bitches came into my wife's work yesterday, and they spent literally the entire day cleaning them, as they were living in their own piss and shit for years, constantly birthing pups:

That cute little yorkie or poodle or shiba inu you see in the pet store, these are their parents. Dirty, sad, often filled with tumors (if they give birth too many times, they get tumors in their mammary glands).
Note: I am not shitting on people who want to get a particular breed. Just saying.. don't support this, especially anywhere that doesn't let you visit the mothers (don't trust pictures). There is no reason why a mixed breed can't provide you amazing companionship.
And BTW the 'shiba inu' being used was most likely a mixed breed herself. If the pups looked close enough, off they went to the pet store. So often, you're not even getting what you're paying for.

Anyone whos looking for a dog, the first thing they should do is go meet dogs at the SPCA over a couple of weekends. Within 2 or 3 visits they will find the dog for them. Unless you absolutely need to spend $3k on a pure bread documented lineage specific breed, say if you wanted a GSD and want to ensure good hips, which most people dont.

Growing up or something. I own a small business and usually work 6 days a week, and have a boat and a big jeep, and a good lookin gf as well. One of the toys had to go and the boat is way too nice in the summer in paradise here, the jeep gets used all year round and for camping, and the gf is good at sammiches and S-ing-D, so that kind of narrowed it down. I've only been riding half a dozen times a year for the last few years, and it was making me sad seeing the bike not being ridden much.

I don't know people of Craigslist, like let's use our minds. If you are:
1. sending a check to Nigeria, Ghana or Africa in general for
a. rent
b. love
c. car
d. some type of cash back deal
Then you are getting screwed.
2. If you go to view a place and the person can't show the place to you, but has some real fancy photos for you to look at, and needs a cash deposit right there on the spot?
Then you are getting screwed
3. No one wants your Toyota Corolla bad enough to ship it anywhere but down the block. It's a global car, they have them at home.
You are getting screwed.
That should cover the basics. Now we can just have people getting screwed in creative ways

One creative motorist was pulled over by a traffic officer who was curious about why the man was talking into his coffee cup. It turned out the cup had an opening cut out of it and his cell phone was inside.
And the winner has to be the driver observed wearing full headphones, holding a sandwich in one hand and watching a dash-level television screen, all while driving down a major Vancouver street.

Kind of a long shot, but when I was younger - think 20 years ago, I remember going to a restaurant or diner on the way to either calgary or osoyoos. Anyway I remember that they were famous for their mushroom burgers. The burger itself was ok, but the crazy thing was that they gave an absurd amount of mushrooms. Like literally half the plate was mushrooms and the other the burger. Any clue if this place actually existed?

Yes, this was the Fresgo Inn on Davie St and they were infamous for their Mushroom Burgers. The plate was piled high with sauted mushrooms and man on man was it good.
I was brought to the attention that this may be their newer location in Surrey. Hope this helps!

Fresgo Inn got my love affair with Daft Punk going.
In the late 90s/early 00s, my dad used to take me there when it was in the West End. We always had turkey clubs (with little plastic swords for toothpicks) and onion rings. And I remember this one catchy song they played that had "one more time" in the lyrics. I always wondered what that song was.
Years pass and I finally decide to look it up. Boom, Daft Punk! And from there, Technologic, Robot Rock and Da Funk.
So, thanks, Fresgo Inn, for expanding my music tastes!

^It's good to know there are still good people around. I just got back from shopping. I was about to parallel park in front of Donald's Market on Hastings. I just passed this cyclist and was deciding on whether to go for it or wait for her. She wasn't about to take a chance, so she slowed down and stopped to let me park. As I was looking back through my driver's side mirror, I noticed the woman lean over to pick up what looked like a wallet. Without hesitating, she slid the wallet through the car's slightly opened moonroof. As she rode past me, I gave her the thumbs up and thanked her for what she had done - she smiled. I got out and wrote a note to the driver how this cyclist found the wallet and how she managed to slip it through the moonroof. I left it on the windshield. The last sentence I wrote on the note....... there are still good people left on this planet, please pay it forward.

Alright.
So. I watch a lot of US media at home. Not a day goes by that I don't hear about some horror story related to employment rights, or the cost of education or health care. Heartbreaking poverty and gun crime, huge gaps between the rich and poor. (Think killing fields of Oakland vs. Stanford/Palo Alto)
I know we all like to hop across the border to save money, but living there permanently is a different matter. I thank my lucky stars every day that I live in Canada. I'm grateful for the peace and stability, for the safety net, for our mosaic society.
Gee, I guess I should have saved this for Canada Day or something.

MG1, do you know if Costco still have those 1:18 model cars for < $20 lately?

Xmas stuff is already out at Costco.
Over the weekend, I was at the Brighton Ave. Costco. Went to get the regular hot dog and drink combo for $1.60. That's when I noticed the PEPSI cup!!!! Like their American locations, they are all Pepsi products. Dang......... where am I going to get my Diet Coke fix? McDonald's, I guess. Free samples with Pepsi......... never thought I'd see the day.
Fountain drinks aren't as bad as 2L bottles, but still enough of a difference. I guess 7 Up vs Sprite is a bit more of a difference for those who are into the clear stuff.
Someone over at Coca Cola dropped the ball. Although in the greater scheme of things, the Costco account isn't as big a deal as losing the McDonald's account........ now that will never happen as one owns the other, yes?
Oh inb4 someone mentions the Pepsi taste challenge. I've done plenty of those...... and when you're batting 1000, pretty sure I got the taste thing down.
I get the Pepsi people so upset when I say, "This one is Coke, because it tastes a helluva lot better," LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL.

Yeah I was there the day before Costco switched over to Pepsi. They lady taking the orders was asking if the order's "for here" or "to go" and was giving out red dixie cups instead of the regular white and red cups for coke for orders that were "for here".
I asked her why and she said they're swtiching over to Pepsi so they need to manage the left over coke cups to last the whole day as they're the ones that the lids would fit.
would be hilarious if they had some coke stuff still hooked up after the switch over. "Hey, this Pepsi stuff isn't half bad!"

Yea bad vibrations in the wheel and I can almost feel it in the pedal it seems
Thought it was the rear rotors as they were fairly old, changed em out with the pads, no difference
The fronts were changed within a year but with Lordco's "premium performance" slotted/cross drilled rotors, the sales guy told me he could give me these "performance" rotors at the cost of the regular ones as they were "changing" Their performance ones...so I don't know I'm tempted to just change those out but also don't want to burn another $150

Oil is cheaper in bulk up here than going south and buying by the bottle or even case. Especially the good stuff. Check out prices at Mopac, for example. I get 20L jugs of Royal Purple for pretty cheap. Get together with someone and buy the jugs. I keep old litre/quart bottles and pour the oil into them. Once I'm done with the jugs, they are good for storing old oil, until I have time to take it to reclycling.
You can buy jugs of oil on line in the US, but the shipping is nuts. It's not worth it.
as for your generic oils, yeah, probably cheaper in the US.

need some advice...
I need to get my old optical prescription from a clinic that I no longer go to, as my new optometrist wants to see my history and monitor the progressions as it goes along. I called my old clinic (Dr. Herman Shen & associates by T&T at metro..) and they told me that because the prescription is older than 2 years and is now expired they have a store policy not to release my information even to me.
I find this absurd as I paid for the last exam, I feel like I am entitled to that information as it could be potentially medically relevant. Even after explaining that, they kept me on hold for 20 minutes on the phone after I asked for the manager. I called back, they basically told me they put me on hold to get me to hang up and proceeded to insist that an expired prescription cannot be given out - I said go ahead and stamp expired on it, write that it is 3 years old I don't give a shit I just want my numbers. They wouldn't budge, and when I asked for the manager she said the manager doesn't want to speak to you... I left a number and said if I didn't get a call back I'll be making a personal visit.
Anyway.. I could walk in there and rant and cause a scene, but any other ideas as to how to get this information that.. is mine? Having worked in a pharmacy, we're legally obligated to keep existing prescriptions up to 5 years in case of medical history check. And upon proper identification we HAVE to give the information out... Are there legalities like that with respect to optometry?
SoNaRWaVe
09-30-2013, 07:21 PM
The optometrist that I go to also said the exact same thing when a patient asked for her numbers so she can get new glasses. Could be a liability thing maybe? Or just get your optometrist to get a requisition for your records?

09-30-2013, 08:46 PM
My optometrist is located inside metrotown as well and something quite similar happened to me and just like you, they were not allowed to release my prescription or any other information over the phone. The easiest way to resolve this was just to walk into the store and ask for a copy and they printed one for me and I was out the door within 2 minutes. I hope the same can be done for you.

Yeah, that range supposed to be replaced with condos. Lets go anyways and try to hit the silo. :troll:
Any ETA on those condos?
FWIW, Apple is now number one and Coca Cola, once number one, drops to third place (most valuable brand).

Well she said I prob hate her now(fuck that I just want dat pussy) so I told her of course I don't hate her thanks for being honest about it right away and not "leading me on" said I'm not a jerk and totally get it.. I then said I wish I hit it more(it's only been two weeks and I have fucked her 7x and got a wicked BJ) She then came out and said well we can still chill and hang out if you want and the sex doesn't have to stop since it's so good...
I played the cool don't give a fuck nice guy and now I told her she has to get that vibrating tongue ring she was telling me about and I have already lined up to go over to her place on Thursday after work for some fun :)

It's far from dead.... the only reason why I'm in this position is the way I was romancing her from the get go!! ;)

I don't know anything about flying or aviation, but the flight display video of this new Russian fighter jet is pretty crazy. Especially at 1:11 :ahwow:

Lamborghini Diablo gets smoked by the GT-R
I just had to thank your post.
That's one of the rarest post Timpo ever made and did not start a new thread for it

I think that GTR would have beaten the Diablo in reverse. Thanks for that definitive video Timpo. I will now thank all of your GTR post's!
Amazing when a car that runs 11.8 vs 13.8 "smokes" him. Sorta makes sense.
