(Semi)-retirement is certainly possible - we could maintain our current pretty comfortable lifestyle with me only making $50-60k/yr. That could be as little as a couple consulting gigs a year or some desk job somewhere. I ultimately just have a short term cash flow problem b/c I'm sitting on a future payout (high 6 figures) in a few years that will pay off the house completely and leave me sitting pretty.

What's a normal amount to pay for gas? We have two gas fireplaces we use occasionally, gas furnace and gas hot water tank. The furnace is quite old and I'm guessing not very efficient, but the house seems decently insulated and our windows were updated.

Yeah your heat exchanger is probably clogged up, and the flame is not going through and instead coming around the outside. When we tried to restart the furnace it "backfired" as well and the flame blew out all around the outside of the unit and then it turned off.

I'll look for the contact, it's on a card taped to the furnace.

How are you toasting them?

We used to eat a LOT of Eggo waffles bcos my kid loved that stuff (but not anymore), and I found that the way we toasted them made a HUGE difference in terms of how they come out.

We don't actually have a toaster -- only a small table top oven for this kind of thing. And to really make it tasty, I needed to toast it at ~350ºC on one side for 6 - 7 min when it comes straight out of the freezer. Then flip it over to the other side, and toast it for another 6 - 7 min. And then after that's done, I need to take it out and let it air out for a short while. And then it'll be nice and crispy.

If I didn't toast it long enough, there'd still be moisture from the freezing, and the waffle will be soft or maybe even soggy. And if I didn't let it air out, it'd still be too moist for my likings. But if I leave it airing out too long, it gets cold and it isn't as good anymore.

But man... 15 min of toasting / waiting for 2 lousy waffles... It just doesn't make any sense... FailFish

It's been a while, but your first bill may have a one-time connection fee, so it may not be "normal".

If not, then $135 does sound pretty high as my TH was $52 for my last bill (Oct 19).

Although as the weather gets colder and colder, your next bill may not be much better lol. I think mine tops out at around ~$140-$160 during the winter

iPhone is pretty crazy you basically just place new phone beside old and it will sync up everything. Put a brand new out of the box phone next to old phone and it automatically turned the physical sim in old phone to new E-sim on the new phone without any interaction with Telus other than verifying the carrier. Devices have never needed to talk with the carrier side for set up, save for the network protocol programming needed to use the carrier.

We've come a long way from iPhones needing a Mac/PC and iTunes to activate. Lots of clients still blame the carrier when they don't have their appleID passwords though.

teachers do a lot of work outside their typical hours as well. my friend who is a teacher and loves to teach would often spend a lot of his free time making lessons and that sort of thing, not to mention grading and all sorts of extra hours doing other things. i would only teach if it was a passion, definitely not for the money and time off.

I'm a teacher on the weekends for Chinese school at a school district in Toronto.

Kids are tough to deal with now. NO one does their homework. I am lucky they are grade 5 and 6; without cell phones is ok but I can see some kids just don't give an F.

1) Kids don't know what manners are
2) They don't do homework and don't care
3) They are so messy.
4) I am dealing with a kid who needs special attention whcih I'm lucky I have dealt / learned how to handle these situations.

I'm only a class of 21 kids and don't even get me started for homework, marking and curriculum.

I don't do it for the money. I also have to come up with my own material which does make it harder.

A buddy of mine was working on my dads old BMW (2004), he did the following for him:
valve covers, oil filter housing, oil pipe, and oil change and coolant flush.

He's only charging my dad for the parts. I think my dad said something like $300 for the parts.

He doesn't want anything for his time. I don't know exactly how many hours but he did it over the weekend and came in multiple trips, so it was a number of hours. He was in my dads garage, so no hoist, tight space, cold, didn't have all his usual tools, etc.

What would a service like that charge typically? Can anyone ball park that for us. We want to pay him fairly but have no idea what the cost of something like this would be, he's being super nice/annoying and doesn't want to give us a price.

Usually at the (new car) dealerships nowadays, the total labour costs tend to be a bit more than the total costs of parts. So if your dad's repairs needed around $300 for parts, I figure something in the $200 - $300 range would be an appropriate amount to pay your friend.

For this one, it might be more than just the avg naughty kid under bad parenting ... I dunno. Sounds like he might have some serious mental, psychological, behaviour, or personality challenges or issues. Sometimes it's not all on the parenting and parents can be desperate and at their wits end. Not equating this kid's behaviour with autism but I've seen families with autistic kids and it's really really really hard. They deserve empathy more than judgment. Again I dunno ...

We are now eating this oyster ramen and incomes this old man. He must be like At least 55ish I think. He said he dropped off his wife and sogo and he already ate so he’s not hungry. They proceed to finally order (without his portion of course) and the mom is trying very hard to push her daughters virtues all the while this little bitch is slurring up noodles in a provocative way. Like very slowly… one strand at a time and making sure she’s using her tongue to lick her lips after each noodle.

HKers aren't known as being super courteous, but they definitely have no problem queueing up for things. That's the main way Mainland visitors will stand out. If there's a line for something, and if there's an inch available near the front, they will try to take it. And then others try to fit in, and it ends up being a huge jam, with pushing and shoving. Happens for EVERYTHING.

I read a study that standing desk are just as bad as sitting if you stand all day. A walking mat will mitigate that but as evofire said, depends how distracting it can be for you.

I mean it makes sense that standing can cause other problems but still beats sitting though the fundamental problem is people not being active enough.

Today is Starbucks' Red Cup Day. Nothing really special. I stopped doing this because for the longest time, the cups were basically just red and pretty boring. This year the design is a bit better. I have a grand total of three different ones in my collection (yes, I collect things). The 50th Anniversary one and some other ribbony one and this year's.

They're reusable plastic cups and free with purchase. I went at 5:00 am. Usually gone by about 10:00 am. FOMO, lol.

I went there and maybe five people in the line up. No big deal, right? BCAA truck is in the parking lot. Driver comes out and picks up about 8 drinks. The counter is full of mobile orders. I'm thinking they'll be gone by 8:00 am.

Oh, I never buy coffee from Starbucks, but I always order ice fraps when I do. I was about to order one when a little old lady ordered and got her coffee. I let her know about the free red cup. That's when I found out from the manager that the red cups are only given out for Holiday drink orders.

You get your coffee in a festive looking paper cup and the collectible red cup is given out separately. I got my Caramel Brulé and it's not half bad.................... expensive as all hell, though. I used one of my many gift cards I've gotten from people over the past few decades, so not a biggie. The only other time I go is to purchase something one or two months before my birthday, so I can receive my birthday freebie (any drink or food item for free).

My 5 year old intel system that I bought purposely for flight sim 2020 was getting a bit too noisy inside the office. so I opted for a silent setup now.

Having a completely integrated apple solution also makes a more or sense as I can literally do something on the phone, copy and paste it into the mac, or vice versa. Also I can pickup calls on it, facetime, etc etc.

It should be much more handy if I ever decide to actually work. I can still game a bit, of course not flight sim, but that's okay as I'm moving the gaming PC into the media room. This M4 chip is powerful enough that it can even sideload cyberpunk 2044 and get reasonable FPS.

Those new ones have excellent reviews, albeit I can’t stand apple computers after having a MacBook Air and MacBook Pro in the last decade. I’ve never been able to get used to their OS even being a iPhone user for almost 20 years

it takes a bit to get used to, but I find it quite good vs Windows nowadays.

Bloatware is easy to remove, the widgets are better. The system performance is quite snappy. Only downside is how it handles DPI scaling settings. I want my 4k desktop, but I want the icons to scale to something visible. Apple still doesn't do this as well as windows. So now I'm forced to run at a lower resolution just so my old ass eyes can see all the tiny excel icons.

I used it for flight simulator and its pretty epic. Also great for FPS games as it really boosts emersion.

im just setting up a new desk in one of my rooms and also planning to buy the mac mini.
since they switched away from intel chips, is having windows on it as well not as good as it used to be? i'd only use windows when i have to bring my work home with me which is once in a blue moon.

i havent had a desktop in ages. i've been using a 12" surface and 14" laptop for over a decade at home, so it should be quite nice. at work i use dual 24" monitors but i just want a more minimal setup at home.
