Has anyone had experience going somewhere on a one-way flight?

I am going to Korea on a one-way flight as I am not sure how long I plan to stay. I was going to get my visa sorted when I arrived as Canadians can stay up to six months by default on a tourist visa. Right now I am not sure if I'm going to be applying for a student visa or obtaining a work visa.

Visitors are required to hold proof of sufficient funds to cover their stay and documents required for their next destination.

From what I've researched, the worst case scenario is that they make me purchase a return ticket home, otherwise I'm denied boarding access.

If I need sufficient proof of funds, I assume a bank statement is more than sufficient? What about a credit card?

Graeme S
11-20-2012, 12:09 AM
They wouldn't deny you boarding access, they'd simply reject you and you'd end up on a flight back to Canada.

When I went to Korea, they didn't ask me for my return ticket (even though I had one), they just asked for the card with my deets (where I was staying, etc etc), and then gave me the stamp and waved me through.

The customs lady didn't speak English, and seemed to be somewhat sketched out by me and just waved me through (though if you check Movember thread, you might understand why).

Korea's pretty chill about Canadians, since it's not really a big deal. Expect to be talked to in Korea though (I'm assuming you're asian) even when you go through the foreign passport line.

im curious as to what ur purpose is in korea? if you plan to apply for a student visa, i believe u need to be accepted to a accredited college or university obtaining a bachelors or higher. work visa's for korea like any other country require sponsorship's which usually are obtained before entering the country.

I'm not sure if I want to dick around for a few months and return, or apply to an accredited school there for a language course, or obtain a worl vosa via my friend's company. I figured if I go on a tourist visa, I would be able to change it afterwards.

Just picked up a Reebok Ai9 Pro stock stick from SportsCheck for $119. They over ordered or something like that, so Reebok painted them straight black so they could sell them at a lower price without competitors getting mad. They're listed as Ai pro stock sticks but I can confirm they're Ai9s.

That's a $270 stick for over 50% off. Stock is limited so I would grab one while they're still around.

Yup, that Costco is less than five minutes from the border. If the border lineups are long, it becomes my plan B. 20 cents a litre savings only five minutes away, plus the 80 plus litre gas tank on the vehicle, a small lineup is worth the wait. Lately, I have been crossing the border at 6:00 am. No lineup whatsoever at that time. The 20 cent savings is the difference betwen gas prices in Sumas and Abby. The difference is even greater if one had to fill up in Vancouver.

BBC News - New York City celebrates day without violent crime (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-20536201)

For the first time in living memory, New York has spent a day entirely without violent crime.

The city police department's chief spokesman said that Monday was the most bloodshed-free 24-hour period in recent history.

Not a single murder, shooting, stabbing or other incident of violent crime was reported for a whole day.

Despite a July spike in homicides, the city's murder rate is on target to hit its lowest point since 1960.

Just a few months ago, residents were living through what one tabloid newspaper called the "summer of blood".

Despite the fall in homicides, statistics point to a 3% overall rise in crime.

There has also been a 9% increase in larceny, which police blame on a surge in smartphone thefts.

But killings are now down 23% compared with last year, which represents a 50-year low.

There have been 366 murders so far this year in New York City, compared with 472 at this time last year.

Experts say such a low number of homicides is highly unusual for a US city of eight million people.

Gang-plagued Chicago, Illinois, has chalked up 462 murders this year, despite having a population of about 2.7 million people.

There have been 301 murders in 2012 in the city of Philadelphia, which has 1.5 million people.

Some experts are praising the New York police department's aggressive crime-prevention tactics, notably the so-called Stop And Frisk policy, which has rooted out dozens of illegal guns.

But critics argue that it has led to hundreds of thousands of young blacks and Latinos being stopped without cause.

I wonder how often that happens in Vancouver. My guess is pretty much never.

Lions Gate Bridge re-opened after deadly overnight crash - News1130 (http://www.news1130.com/traffic/article/426673--lions-gate-bridge-re-opened-after-deadly-overnight-crash)

West Vancouver Police Sergeant Ed Pearce says witnesses have told them a car was speeding northbound on the bridge at about 11:45 p.m.

"We have reports of the vehicle spinning, for some unknown reason, out of control; [then it] crossed into the southbound lane and struck a westbound transit bus head-on," he explains.

Both men inside the car died in hospital.

"At this time, we're not releasing very much information on the two deceased, other than to say they are two young males in their early twenties in the Lower Mainland. We're presently working on next of kin notifications," says Pearce.

There were 15 people on-board the bus; four were hurt, including the driver. They are expected to be okay.

difference between city population size and metropolitan size is a little confusing and kind of dumb at times. Vancouver is a pretty small city, but it brings in all of the Lower Mainland which is actually pretty big

city ------- pop --- metro

NY---------8m------19m
Chicago----2.5m----9.5m
LA---------3.8m----12.8m
Toronto----2.6m----6m
Van--------0.6m----2.3m

but then you have places like calgary that are stand alone

Calgary----1.1m----1.2m

In a lot of cases, it's difficult to separate the City from the Metro. I mean, I've lived in Burnaby my whole life, but whenever I meet new people from abroad or I'm travelling I'm from Vancouver.

In this case, though, it's for tracking crime statistics, so it'd be like the VPD announcing a drug-bust-free day. ...Actually that's a pretty good analogy. Just about as likely as a violence free day in NY. There is hope after all.

RRxtar
11-29-2012, 09:50 AM
its almost pointless to separate city from metro in most cases and i think most people refer to metro areas when they talk about a city, just as graeme S said.

most 'statistics' about a city, are affected by the rest of the metro area. like, if someone kills someone in downtown vancouver, vancouver gets a +1 on the murder rate. but the guy killed and the killer both live in surrey, one works in richmond, and the other in burnaby. and it was over a drug deal they did in coquitlam from a grow op in west van.

RIP to the deceased, but something really infuriates me...

Was watching the news today, and CHEK TV made reference to Revscene while covering this story. Essentially said "the speeders were affiliated with a local car club 'Revscene'" while showing the thread where members were writing their "RIP"s. They almost made it sound like RS is a street racing forum and bullshit like that... got me so fucking mad hearing media put their own spin on news like that. Can't believe they'd put RS in a bad light when members are just posting condolences.

" Shell Canada is coming under criticism over its handling of a glitch that resulted in people getting overcharged for gas last week.

If you gassed up at Shell last Thursday and Friday, you may want to look at your bank statement.

For instance, one woman who shared her story says she pre-paid for 50 dollars but ended up filling her vehicle with 47 dollars worth of gas. When she looked at her bank statement, she saw she had been charged the full 50 dollars."

Police Stop Leads To Bizzare Arrest « (http://thedailycricket.com/2008/06/23/bizzare-arrest-on-rt-95/)

Three people remain in custody after being arrested on Saturday morning following a traffic stop in Canton. In what was described by Lt. Paul Sullivan as “the most bizarre traffic stop” that he has seen in his 23 years on the force, Canton police responded to a report of a disabled vehicle traveling on Route 95. They came across the vehicle shortly after 2 a.m. traveling in the high-speed lane on the southbound side.

Former male model Francis Fasher of Foxboro was arrested and charged with DUI.

“We spotted the green Hyundai Elantra traveling at approximately five miles-per-hour in the passing lane with a huge shower of sparks coming from the rear of the vehicle. As we got closer we noticed that the rear end of the vehicle was dragging on the ground due to the fact that there were no rear tires or axle on the vehicle,” said Lt. Sullivan of the Canton Police. “After the vehicle pulled over, we approached it and found that the driver was not only drinking a can of beer, but that he was not wearing any pants and that he had urinated on himself.”

After not one, but two, brief foot chases, Francis Fasher, 45, of Foxboro, was placed under arrest.

“There were also two female passengers in the back seat,” stated Lt. Sullivan. “One of the females was asleep, partially clad. The other was extremely hysterical. At that time, we believed that she might have been under the influence of PCP, due to the fact that she claimed there were mice biting at her and climbing on her.”

Because of the size of the two women, police were unable to pull the women out of the rear doors of the vehicle. After members of the Canton Rescue Squad cut the roof off the vehicle, and with the help of a crane supplied by Shaugnessy Crane, the women were lifted out of the car. Police estimate the weight of each woman was between 300 and 450 pounds.

Shortly after being extracted from the vehicle, the two women began arguing with each other and blows were thrown. At that point, police arrested 17-year-old Tina “Pebbles” Zonfrelli of Foxboro and 56-year-old Donna Dyers of Lynn.
“We followed the drag marks and found that the axle and tires had separated from the vehicle some four miles back. The axle, wheels and tires were found in the parking lot of the Ancient Mariner Lounge located in Foxboro,” stated Canton police officer James C. West. “At this time we believe that the three individuals had patronized the Mariner Lounge for the better part of the day, and that at closing time, they decided to continue the party at Mr. Fasher’s apartment.”
Upon entering the vehicle, the combined weight of the occupants caused the axle and wheels to separate from the vehicle.
“It is unbelievable that an individual could drive over four miles and not realize that there were no rear tires on the car,” says West.
During the search of the vehicle, police came up with an unexpected find.
“The interior of the vehicle was very messy. There were beer cans, food wrappers, rib bones, and other rubbish in the car. Under the driver’s seat we found a nest of mice. I guess she did see a mouse,” West chuckled.
Police charged Fasher with driving while intoxicated, indecent exposure, urinating in public, disturbing the peace, failure to stay in marked lanes, destruction of public property, assaulting a police officer, driving an unregistered motor vehicle, driving an uninsured motor vehicle, non-payment of child support, public intoxication, evading police, passengers not wearing seat belts, transporting lab animals without proper permits and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

“We’ve been after this guy for quite some time,” said West. “Mr. Fasher is well known to us. He is a renowned transvestite, and he’s been arrested a number of times for prostitution. In June of 1998, he was arrested six times in one week. In fact, three of those arrests occurred on one day.”

Fasher faces a number of complaints from business owners in Canton and charges have been filed against him by a number of citizens in the community. Four people have filed civil-damage lawsuits against him after their private property was damaged by Fasher. One person has alleged that he had sex with her prize-winning French poodle in her backyard.

Jimmy Chan, owner of Golden China restaurant claims that he assaulted an employee and caused damages to his establishment.

“He drink all morning,” said Chan. “He get crazy. I tell him no more beer for you and he throw Pu-Pu platter at waitress. He a very bad man. He broke very expensive mirror!”

James Marathos, owner of Marathos Carpets, alleges that he found Fasher sleeping in his store when he opened up for business one morning three weeks ago.
“He broke in through the back door and passed out right here,” pointing out the spot, said Marathos. “I threw him out but later I discovered that he had urinated all over our entire Persian rug collection, and I ended up with a cleaning bill for $2,600.

Fisher is scheduled to appear in Norfolk County District Court on Monday morning.

To give you an idea I pay about $55/month for my 5x10x10 stacked unit in East Vancouver.

For the ground units they are a tad smaller and start anywhere between $75-100.

Also, some places may have a free months rent when you pay for one month or pay 2 months and get one free month.

Bottles of hard liquor though, I couldn't tell you.

Probably wouldn't risk it with liquor. Generally, if you bring a 6 pack of beer or a bottle of wine, they don't care though. I bring a 6 pack of beer back every time I go over the border.

LOL We bought groceries and a 24 case and hid the cans in the bags of groceries but kept the 24 case on a separate receipt. At the border they asked us what we bought, we said just groceries and they searched our grocery bags and found the cans of beer and started laughing at us saying we were allowed to bring the beer over and not to do that again and to declare it. There's a few ways you can look at it though.

1. He was pissed. They trash talked him, spit on his face and came after him. Once he got the upper hand it was, "fuck you, you're dead, motherfucker"

2. He was scared and lost control.

3. Having just got out of prison, he's kind of mentally fucked and has a kill or be killed mentality.

Did he go too far? Sure, but who put him in that situation?

He says he got slapped in the face as well when he got spit on, that's enough to make anyone react the way he did. I think it's far too easy to say "he went too far", until you've been in a similar scenario, who's to say we wouldn't react in the same manner.

really? if you got slapped by a chick you could see yourself fracturing her skull? :suspicious:

No, not from a slap, but put yourself in the entire scenario he was in. Out of prison, verbally threatened, spit on, slapped, 2 people jump the counter towards you. And like Durrann said, i'm sure at the time he wasn't thinking "i'm gonna fracture her skull"

^try CAA? If you have a Platinum Visa you should be covered for travel insurance, I know the TD infinite covers around 8 days for travel insurance for just having the card. Check your Visa/mastercard.

Anyone know of a good image uploader?
I use photobucket, but they resize the image to a tiny thumbnail and when I post pictures they are too small to see.

I figured they used some sort of technology.. So I guess this wasn't filmed live?

I know i was just being a dick :)

do you guys know where to buy a cheap travel insurance for a short trip?

you should check your credit cards some come with travel insurance

or check your health insurance plan (if you have any) they come with travel insurance as well (limited number of days per year)

other than that purchase it through where you paid for tickets (if this is a trip where you purchase tickets)

go to a travel agent or even to your bank it's only around $30 like so https://www.rbcroyalbank.com/cgi-bin/travel/travel-insurance.cgi

For anyone who likes or wants some instant coffee: Starbucks (today only) has a buy one get one free on their VIA instant coffee Christmas blend. It's black coffee, makes about a tall size, and tastes damn good. It works out to about fifty cents a cup now that it's on sale, which makes it a great deal. I picked up 4 packs.

Once it reaches Canada, it can take up to two weeks to get your package. It's held at customs. I order a lot of electronics parts from HK and China. Sometimes items arrive within a few days of placing order, while others take a long time. As for updates, there are usually none, even after item has been delivered - at least I don't check anymore. It used to be very frustrating, but I got used to it, LOL.

The stuff I get from China/HK comes with free shipping and I've never had one go missing - tracking or not. Again, it's not the time it takes to get here, it's the extra time it takes to get past customs. Then there's Canada Post..... nuff said.

it's from singapore, and supposedly it's Xpresspost. i'm assuming they would have shipped it directly to somewhere in Canada, with no stops in between, so I was thinking that it would show that it's at least in Canada by now..

yeah i was thinking it might be in customs, but every time i've ordered something internationally, and it's shipped through canada post, they've updated the tracking to show that it's arrived in Canada and is in customs.

Hopefully it is in Canada by now, and they just didn't update the status lol

Keep in mind that just because something's been assigned a tracking number doesn't mean it's actually been shipped. When I get stuff sent from DX, it can sometimes be up to a full week after I get the tracking number for it to list as shipped. In order to save on shipping, many companies will only do full-load ships; they'll buy bulk rather than sending it piece by piece.

Yeah, the status on the 5th was originally just "INFORMATION RECEIVED" on the SingPost site and it wasn't until the 9th that it changed to "Despatched to overseas (Country code: CA)" and that's when it was registered with Canada post and I was able to check for the status on their site.

but anyway, i'll just wait it out for another week or two before i'll start to worry. I was just a bit confused because usually when I see that it's been dispatched, it normally shows that it's arrived in Canada a day or two later and it's getting reviewed by customs

Go to Sleep Country and take your time. Salesmen may provide info on bed materials and offer suggestions on ones that may work for you.

When I went the guy noticed I have broad shoulders, so recommended a medium firmness mattress but with a pillow top so has more 'give' to relieve pressure on shoulders but also have enough support for the rest of the body.

Also I found them very low-pressure so it was nice to really take your time and go back and forth between mattresses.

Bad back? Try foam mattress. If you have any allergies, natural foam is the best. Very expensive, but worth every penny.

Healthier all around. No insects (bed bugs, microscopic critters, etc.), and most important of all, no off gassing.

I couldn't afford the best 100% pure natural foam mattress, so settled for a blend.

Must research, though, because there are a lot of shysters out there. If you find a cheap 100% natural foam mattress, it's most likely not the real thing.

Latex Mattress Vancouver - Organic Mattresses - Memory Foam Vancouver (http://www.myessentia.com/locations/vancouver)

One of the more reputable companies out there.

When you spend close to a third of your entire life sleeping, it's important to get something that is comfortable. Spend a minimum of 15 minutes in a bed to get a feel of how it conforms to your body. If you have significant other, bring that person along, as well.

I second sleep-country - for a "big box" store, their service is actually quite good, low pressure as mentioned, and they are surprisingly quite knowledgeable.

They also have payment plans w/ no interest if you're into that thing.

Bought the firmest mattress they had 2 years ago or so and no complaints with the experience of the mattress itself.

Lol, funny guy;

Google exec proves his identity on car forum in most hilarious way possible

Benjamin Sloss Treynor is the Vice President of Engineering at Google. He's smart. He's rich. And he loves cars.

He's also very active on car forums, where he has garnered equal amounts of reverence for and doubt of his wealth. So when a forum member asked him to prove he owns a Raptor, a 458 Italia, and a McLaren 12C Spyder by taking pictures of them with pieces of bread, Treynor was more than happy to oblige.

We were told the Treynor has been called into question in the past, and has responded by posting a picture of his kid holding a sign that has the name of the SVT Performance forum where he posts under the username Treynor. Ford_racer's call for proof by putting bread in the photos was more of a joke than serious.

http://l.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/i9cCzTvxyWQZjvJzm2nO_w--/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3M7cT04NTt3PTYzMA--/http://l.yimg.com/os/290/2012/12/17/forum-post-jpg_213153.jpg

hankfully, Treynor has a sense of humor about himself and complied to the request... and then some.

On his Ford Raptor, he out a nice hearty loaf of New York Rye Bread.

http://l2.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/CtRMoCo8GqCZwM0LToJfTw--/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3M7cT04NTt3PTYzMA--/http://l.yimg.com/os/290/2012/12/17/ford-f150-bread-jpg_213153.jpg

On the Ferrari 458, he went Italian bread to complement the Italian leather.

http://l1.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/xsH89swYIJrVbWNjaH3ZRg--/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3M7cT04NTt3PTYzMA--/http://l.yimg.com/os/290/2012/12/17/ferrari-bread-jpg_213153.jpg

And finally, on the McLaren 12C Spyder, nothing goes with an English car like English crumpets.

http://l3.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/KLldoMNHG06ghbMzYZdszA--/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3M7cT04NTt3PTYzMA--/http://l.yimg.com/os/290/2012/12/17/mclaren-brea-jpg_213153.jpg

This is so much win in so many ways. First, Treynor has awesome taste in cars. Secondly, he obviously has a sense of humor about himself because he's posting pictures of bread on supercars. More evidence of that humor is available in his Google+ profile picture.

Treynor is also the same Google exec who won the auction for a Ferrari 599XX Evo that was being sold to benefit victims of the Italian earthquake.

OH SHIT there’s a spider out there that builds bigger spiders

http://media.tumblr.com/ef4a9d2ddf1771b13742606ea77fd851/tumblr_inline_mfawi3rY1b1qzozj1.jpg

A spider that builds elaborate, fake spiders and hangs them in its web has been discovered in the Peruvian Amazon.

Believed to be a new species in the genus Cyclosa, the arachnid crafts the larger spider from leaves, debris and dead insects. Though Cyclosa includes other sculpting arachnids, this is the first one observed to build a replica with multiple, spidery legs.

Scientists suspect the fake spiders serve as decoys, part of a defense mechanism meant to confuse or distract predators. “It seems like a really well evolved and very specialized behavior,” said Phil Torres, who described the find in a blog entry written for Rainforest Expeditions. Torres, a biologist and science educator, divides his time between Southern California and Peru, where he’s involved in research and education projects.

“Considering that spiders can already make really impressive geometric designs with their webs, it’s no surprise that they can take that leap to make an impressive design with debris and other things,” he said.

For anyone with Telus optik tv (i have no idea if this for any other Telus tv service)

Oasis 643 HD, HIFI 644 HD, Radx 645 HD and EQhd 646 HD are on a free trial right now through December I think. They are pretty decent, after watching a bit of the Oasis channel I will probably sign up for it when the trials over.

just a warning for anyone who isn't into or ok with this stuff the Oasis channel had some pretty graphic stuff on it when they had to surgeries on animals and when they feed and watch the animals hunt

anyone know of a good place to play pool in tri cities and in east van? Billiards in port Moody on St John is garbage.

If so do you know their rates.

Thanks

You can also try Q1 in Richmond. Dedicated billiards facility. House cues are fiberglass Cuetecs. Rates are standard.

Yeah, god bless america..........just remember to take good ol' Canadian ketchup with you. No shit, I take a bag of ketchup with me when I go south of the border, because I cannot stand their "premium" ketchup that's made with high fructose corn syrup. I'm no ketchup connoisseur, but that stuff is nasty. You can give me your pink slime, America, but don't give me no high fructose corn crap. Amen.

Washington, DC Metro Station on a cold January morning in 2007

The man with a violin played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time approx. 2 thousand people went through the station, most of them on their way to work. After 3 minutes a middle aged man noticed there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried to meet his schedule.

4 minutes later:
The violinist received his first dollar: a woman threw the money in the hat and, without stopping, continued to walk.

6 minutes:
A young man leaned against the wall to listen to him, then looked at his watch and started to walk again.

10 minutes:
A 3-year old boy stopped but his mother tugged him along hurriedly. The kid stopped to look at the violinist again, but the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. Every parent, without exception, forced their children to move on quickly.

45 minutes:
The musician played continuously. Only 6 people stopped and listened for a short while. About 20 gave money but continued to walk at their normal pace. The man collected a total of $32

1 hour:
He finished playing and silence took over. No one noticed. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition.

No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the greatest musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with a violin worth $3.5 million dollars. Two days prior, Joshua Bell sold out a theater in Boston where the seats averaged $100.

This is a true story. Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and people's priorities.

The questions raised:
*In a common place environment at an inappropriate hour, do we perceive beauty?
*Do we stop to appreciate it?
*Do we recognize talent in an unexpected context?

One possible conclusion reached from this experiment could be this:
If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world, playing some of the finest music ever written, with one of the most beautiful instruments ever made...how many other things are we missing?

Kids know best...................

just a product review:
South Beach Smoke (e-cig)

Not a fan of it at all. Really wanted to trim down the tar and other shit so I decided to try this. It has a nicotine kick, but that's about it, no throat hit. The smoke is significant unlike other ecigs, but I stopped using it after 20 puffs. Might just convert it to a vape if I have time...

School Shooter's DNA to Be Studied - Yahoo! (http://gma.yahoo.com/school-shooters-dna-studied-214930321--abc-news-topstories.html)

Geneticists have been asked to study the DNA of Adam Lanza, the Connecticut man whose shooting rampage killed 27 people, including an entire first grade class.

The study, which experts believe may be the first of its kind, is expected to be looking for abnormalities or mutations in Lanza's DNA.
