They are only now getting towards the end of bringing in some of the later draws, so you technically could have spent 40k in 2018 to just start getting trained now, and it'll be another few years of getting basically no work and then maybe by year 10 you're hopefully high enough to get somewhat consistent work.

Actually becoming a member is projected to take up to 20+ years there now. Vancouver may be different but I'm sure it's a long ass time as well.

I think Dayshift is like $55 an hour, afternoons like $70, and graveyard like $86... So is that worth putting up $120k for a chance to one day get work? Keep in mind automation is coming eventually and labor jobs will dwindle. Tell your buddy his kid better get a red seal trade, they'll hire HD mechanics, millwrights, and electricians off the street when they need them, no application needed. You'll get more consistent work that way too.

The majority of these kids are recruited at 18 or 19 years old. they wont see stable work till they are probably 30. That means these kids will be going to the union hall twice a day, every day hoping to get a job for 10+ years before they are able to hold something steady.

Does this sound great to anyone!? no? thats exactly why we are having a labor issue. As much as we want more longshoremen, their own "traditions" and practices are the ones limiting their options. Plus our ports are just not competitive compared to global standards. We do about 20-24gross moves per hour per crane around here.

Asia and Europe does 30-40 GMPH. thats double our productivity per crane. While halving our labor costs.

Keep in mind he's going to have to drive to the hall to try and get work and needs to get a certain amount of hours every board move to keep moving up. This could mean weeks of driving to the hall everyday and getting jack shit, essentially losing money with the cost of gas plus the hours of your life wasted sitting there. If he's not diligent enough to do this then he's just going to fall off the boards and get deregistered as well.

Hobz probably has more insight on automation, but if the RBT2 ever gets built im sure there will be lots of automation there, forcing automation on the other terminals to compete. The union may be able to slow it down, but other terminals in the world are basically fully automated so it's only a matter of time, you can't stop progress.

If this guys dad has the cash to put down $120k on an application he should be able to get his kid an apprenticeship somewhere for a trade and then he can make $150k+ and not have to wait 10+ years to get it.

Deltaport semi automated the CRMG (rail gantries) and they didnt fire a single operator. They instead put them in an air-conditioned room where they just press a button now.

Ideally thats what we want for all the intensive jobs like the vessel cranes and the yard equipment. That'll boost productivity and safety. Of course the writing on the wall is eventually the system works so well you can take the human element out of it, but thats what the union will fight for to keep its members employed.

Rob bank terminal 2 is a pipe dream. i gottta fight too many chugs groups and fucking eco fags to get it off the ground. They all want a piece and we are already 20 years behind what we need for capacity. For most applications yes unless you are trying to eke out that last 1 degree of heat transfer efficiency. The main difference would be whether if you need just a regular paste to fill the gaps, or a thermal glue, or thermal tape.

You have a few types of thermal pastes (metal, ceramic, silicone and some others). Some are better at thermal conductivity, some are better at electric insulation... etc

The short answer was no, they aren't the same. It wasn't not about performance as it was for a kettle. It was mainly about the actual application. I don't see anything that a kettle would need specifically, but I'd double-check as if you need it to be non-conductive, you probably want to avoid any metal based one.

Re thermal paste I would just look up the temperature operating range spec for the stuff to make sure it was intended to be happy doing kettle duty + some comfortable margin of error.

Try googling for thermal paste intended for espresso machines? That might be a fit for your application.

Oh I didn't pay anywhere close to the listed price. It was on kickstarter and I paid $250 IIRC. I have a fossil too but that one stopped winding so it's just sitting.

It's not worth $799. The finishing is nice but the movement isn't the most accurate and I would have forgone the dual time as it's annoying to have to set it when the reserve is so low so you have to set it all the time.

I don't have a winder, and I left my regular go to watch at a friend's house.

I used to hate the smart watch when I had it in the past due to limited functions and annoying notifications I couldn't seem to turn off. But this was way, way back when it was the second gen watch. This new one is actually quite good. Customization of the watch face is excellent and plenty of free options to choose from.

Prior to all of this, I hadn't worn a watch since high school days. Back then I had a pretty neat stainless steel Timex with a face that could light up. Got stolen unfortunately but I still remember it fondly!

They get it for publicity/TV shots when they're not actively competing. Like when they're doing TV interviews after a stage, they'll get handed the watch by a PR person who's responsible for the watch. Once the interview is done they give the watch back to the PR person who puts it in a safe. During the interview, the athlete will raise their hand to brush their hair back or something to show off the watch.

Just like F1, you'll see the podium finishers put on a watch as they take off their helmet and comms gear etc. It's with the towels and water bottles on those little portable podiums.

It has been discontinued. You can still get them if you are willing to import from UK or check out some specific UK import stores locally like the Brit Store or Black Pudding Import. But you won't find them in regular shops.

The raging fire sent up a column of flames and thick smoke as it spread quickly on bamboo scaffolding and construction netting that had been set up around the exterior of the housing complex in Tai Po district, in the New Territories. Records show the housing complex consisted of eight blocks with almost 2,000 apartments housing about 4,800 people.

Video from the scene showed multiple buildings close to each other ablaze, with bright flames and smoke shooting out of many of the apartments’ windows as night fell. Authorities said hundreds of firefighters, police officers and paramedics were deployed, and video showed firefighters aiming water at the intense flames from high up on ladder trucks.

The blaze started mid afternoon and after nightfall authorities upgraded it to a level 5 alarm, the highest level of severity, the Fire Services Department said. The fire was still raging late into the night, and authorities said conditions remained very challenging for firefighters.

“Debris and scaffolding of the affected buildings are falling down,” said Derek Armstrong Chan, deputy director of Fire Services (Operations). “The temperature inside the buildings concerned (is) very high. It’s difficult for us to enter the building and go upstairs to conduct firefighting and rescue operations.”

It was not immediately known what caused the fire. Officials said the fire started at the external scaffolding of one of the buildings and later spread to inside the building and also to nearby blocks, likely aided by windy conditions. The department said it received “numerous” calls requesting assistance and some residents remained trapped as of Wednesday night local time.

I replaced mine the same way you are looking to replace yours, nothing to it, take off 2 screws, swap wiring, off you go.

Keep the lumens the same if you want same output, otherwise increase / decrease as wanted.

Changing a light fixture is just a matter of:
1. Turning off the breaker
2. Verifying that there is indeed no power going to the circuit
3. Removing the existing fixture (unscrewing the fixture and untwisting a few wires)
4. Repeat in reverse with new fixture

Watch a video, it's very straight forward.

It's not a bad option per se, but your fixture will still be dependent on the old fluorescent ballast which still is a point of failure.

Plus modern LED fixtures can do a better job at directing the light patterns, giving you better light performance.

It has been a slow trickle in my social ciricles, but over the years, there have been a few passings for one reason or another.

What I am having a difficult time coming to terms with is how many people have developed / are developing some sort of common chronic middle age illnesses. It is not at all surprising at my age (late 40's), and I have been affected by different ailments here and there as well. Overall, I'd still say I have been very lucky bcos I have generally been pretty healthy. But enough of my friends seem to be require medication to manage their health conditions, and it just goes to show that we are no longer the spring chickens that we were...

latest news reports mention that polystyrene boards were used to cover some of the windows of these particular apartments in Tai Po. -extremely flammable boards.

Hong Kong in general has a very good safety record when it comes to apartments from what I hear from my god parents in Sai Kung.
The last major fire in a Hong Kong apartment was back in 1996.
