So keep an eye out for a class action lawsuit for some free money

VANCOUVER — A lawyer for a group of iPhone owners says a British Columbia judge has approved a countrywide multimillion-dollar settlement with tech giant Apple over software updates that allegedly slowed down older devices.

Lawyer K.S. Garcha says class members who make claims on the $14.4-million settlement can expect to receive between $17.50 and $150 each, depending on how many people submit a claim for the settlement money

he settlement covers eligible residents of Canada except those in Quebec, which Garcha says could reach nine million people.

He says the settlement process took a couple of years, with Apple agreeing to a "compromise" without admitting any wrongdoing.

Garcha says the class-action lawsuit was a "complex matter" involving novel legal theories about the company putting software on devices without the owners' consent.
The B.C. lawsuit was originally filed in 2018, and Apple settled a similar case in the United States involving so-called throttling of iPhone 6 and 7 models, and Garcha says American class members ended up with US$92 payouts.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published March 4, 2024.

Don't know which thread we were talking about this but an interesting article (link is free) about what's happening in the US for homes that only have a 100amp service - there's companies springing up to build "Smart" electrical panels so people can avoid paying to upgrade to 200amp service.

^ that’s already happening here, you can get a smart switch which diverts the entirety of your 240v to your EV charger

100 amps will never be able to support the faster chargers though

I know exactly what you mean by "grainy", because that's sort of how I find it as well. I have previously described it as "loose" and "not pastey", and "pastey" is how I would normally expect the XLB meat paste to be.

Yes, but that’s how it’s suppose to be. Not a lump of pork. Because it’s basically just chopped pork shoulder instead of cheapy ass cuts of ground pork.

Well either way, I still think it’s the best XLB in Richmond.

Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama dies at 68

so sad when i read this. I still remember the days of buying comics.
Before the days in infitity scroll on my cell, i would read on the pooper with a few books in hand.

I remember when we were poor and i only had # 7, 8,9 then 13,14,15 and never had the chance to read the entire series... Just recently got dragon ball 1- 20 reading it all over again. the nostalgic feeling

did you know he made #2 of income as an animator last year, #1 was actually ONe Piece... crazy.

Surpsied he was only 68. I remember kids with dragon ball cards and watching dragon ball on YTV back in like.. 94?

And that’s obviously after it was dubbed and came over here

My first experience with Akira Toriyama was back in what must have been the early 80's with his Dr. Slump series. And then it was the whole Dragon Ball saga from the early beginnings all the way through to university.

I was just chatting with another HS friend about how we used to read the Dragon Ball volumes -- it was probably around the Android arc -- back in highschool.

Yes, the plot became self repeating, and Dragon Ball turned into Drag-on Ball. But there was no denying that he literally grew up with me all the way from childhood to adulthood.

RIP Toriyama sensei.

Quick question ... didn't happen to me but just wondering. Lots of stories of people using bank drafts for big interpersonal purchases on CL/FB, draft turned out to be fake.

So if someone scams you in a used car sale, gives you a counterfeit bank draft and it bounced, can you technically claim from ICBC that your car was 'stolen'? Cuz it kind of was. I mean for big purchases like over $5K ... what form of payment is safe? Anything under $5K ... ok, cash, count the red bills but over $5K, it gets sketch cuz you have to worry about counterfeit 100's.

Yeah, they took your car and didn't pay for it so it's stolen. You'd report it to the RCMP and ICBC. Theft over $5000 too so the dude just picked up a felony.

Bank drafts are safe as long as you're with the person at the bank and the teller hands it to you directly.

SSM_DC5
03-09-2024, 02:38 PM
no form is 100% safe. Best you can do is mitigate problems.
Learn to find counterfeit cash
Follow the person getting the bank draft all the way to the bank and be there when obtaining the bank draft. Deposit it asap to your own bank.

It gets a little messy when it comes to transfer of title for a car purchase, but there needs to be a minimum level of trust between both parties. How can you transfer funds and transfer the car ownership at the exact same time? One needs to be first since you can't be at a bank and an autobroker at the same time.

6793026
03-10-2024, 04:35 AM
Do a lien search and that would be one.
Even bank draft they hold it for 3 days when i said.. DUDE it's a bank draft it's not a check. But they still won't verify.
Ideal thing to do is deposit into their bank which the draft came from.

Have you gotten your frame checked? 1st gen R8 is also known for frame cracking as well. I thought the V8 would have been relatively reliable as it's in quite a lot of cars, don't think melting a piston is a common issue.

The V10 on the other hand, it's reliable for an exotic engine, but I don't think they typically last more than 100 without some major work required.

I caught a scumbag sneaking into our building last night through the parking gate. He was on an electric scooter and rode past me while I was waiting in my car for the gate to close. Talk about brazen.

He went past and looked very suspicious so I followed him and he started swearing at me. I asked if he lived here and if he had keys. He said yes but coulldnt find them. So then he scurried out and I followed him out.

I immediately recognized him as the same guy who stole packages from the lobby a few months ago. Exact same guy. I remember his face from when I pulled the footage from our cameras at the time.

So I called 911 and followed him out but he rode through the park. By the time rcmp came he was long gone. The officer who talked to me was totally useless and apathetic.

I think we got lucky and hopefully avoided some thefts last night.

Yes, my wife wasn't happy with me, and the cop lectured me.

I'm on the strata and we hand out fines all the time for people who don't wait at the gate. We've had enough break-ins where thousands of dollars of property and bikes have been stolen, so we take security seriously.

So when I saw the guy fly by me, my initial thought was hey that person didn't wait, and then when he started swearing back, I realized he was a sketchy dude so I backed off a bit, but still hung around him such that he couldn't actually steal anything without me watching. Then he got frustrated/mad and took off.

I've dealt with the RCMP here on quite a few occasions and honestly all of their members have been really good. The last time we had a break-in, they even came and took fingerprints. I was always impressed. This guy however gave zero fucks.

I guess I thought the fact that I was saying "there's a guy trespassing on our property and we recognize him as a guy who previously broke in and committed thefts, for which we have him in video doing" would have been more of a bigger deal for him but YMMV.

Tax return time!

Is there a way to figure out what your RRSP contribution limit number is without a Notice of Assessment from last year?

Long version of the story is my wifes CRA account for the 3rd year in a row got revoked. I'm sure some people on Revscene has experienced this nonsense, I know if you read online it's super common. Anyway its annoying as fuck because there's no way to access your account or even create a new one without calling the CRA. That's fine except trying to call them during this time typically results in hours and hours of being on hold. If you're lucky you may wait 1-2 hours and get them on the first try and if you're not you may be spending upwards of 15+ hours on hold over multiple days to try and get through. Personally I rather deal with this nonsense after tax season is over the only problem is I can't access her Notice of assessment and the only thing I need is her RRSP contribution limit. Is there an easy way to figure this out? What if I put a random number similar to her limit last year, file her taxes, deal with her account after, then once I get access get her real number and refile her return saying oops I put in the wrong number? For the record, she has not contributed anywhere remotely close to whatever her limit would be so definitely no chance of her being over.

Any help would be appreciated.

had cops come in and do prints and of course my mom was like "can't you go arrest them"... Cop bluntly said "no." Got ed-u-matcated on a) you watch too much CSI b) there ain't no database of everyone in the world c) he/she has to be caught in the act.

my mom learned quick how her knowledge is all untrue from TVB lol...and got ko-ed.

would never advise anyone doing this but if firearms were every identified, then things flip 180 with sirens and boat load of people coming.

The only ways I can think of are:

- Call CRA and push 2 for French, the wait might be shorter?

- Is there a CRA office in Vancouver you can visit in person? Waiting in line might be preferable than waiting on hold?

- Maybe an accountant has access to a database with those records and you can hire someone to get that info for you?

- Post this question on reddit under /personalfinancecanada. There are smart people there who will likely have some advice.

Trying to wait online is one thing what make it extra harder is my wife does shift work and she's usually working during the hours they're open. Going in person is almost entirely out of the question too but yea I may need to ask some experts for some opinion the last couple years we got lucky because for reasons I forget I logged into her account way before the tax season and saw she couldn't access it so we managed to call them before tax season and didn't have to wait long at all but now that we're in the thick of things good luck.

Is there any particular reason why you need to know limit before filing your taxes? After all, putting some RRSP in for 2023 has passed (Feb 29th). Nothing will affect anything until you file and you'll get the number in your NOA. You indicated that she has lots of room. There is no real advantage of putting RRSP in today vs. after April when you get your return back.

Live with the ambiguity?

The tax software forces you to put what your RRSP Contribution limit as stated on your 2023 Notice of assessment otherwise you can't file your taxes. I guess CRA needs to confirm you didn't over contribute. My wife only contributes like a couple hundred every months so I know it won't be an issue. Based on a couple quick conversations I had with a couple ex accountant friends it looks like I'm just going to lean on putting in a fake number and filing it. I'll just take her number from last years return and put something similar to that. Even if the number is wrong I doubt CRA would put up a stink because it would result in no advantage to my wife it isn't like I'm going to manipulate her return to get a much larger return or anything.

The tax software forces you to put what your RRSP Contribution limit as stated on your 2023 Notice of assessment otherwise you can't file your taxes. I guess CRA needs to confirm you didn't over contribute. My wife only contributes like a couple hundred every months so I know it won't be an issue. Goddamn, Lincolns are expensive. Spec'd a lightly equipped Nautilus and it's more money (76k before taxes) than a comparable Lexus RX which seems nuts.

A nicely equipped Cosair is $65k!!! That's a nicely equipped Q5 money.

Their carts get replaced on a regular cadence, their shit gets destroyed fairly regularly. This is probably just the latest model of it.

When it went from the single deep bucket carts to the two tray carts it was all weird for a bit too.

I'm pretty sure that when you sign on for a IUD, you sign off on the fact that it is rated as 99% effective and that you will not sue the doctor or company in the event that you get pregnant. No one or nothing can guarantee 100% effectiveness ... except for abstinence and even then, pregnancy happened once in history.

During covid when the GOV invited the Super Market CEO's Galon seemed to get shitted on the most too or at least it looked like it. So just from your avg consumer here isn't Superstore the cheapest of all the Super Markets? I shop at TnT, Superstore, Save On, Safeway, and Sun Given all on the regular. I got to each place for certain things. Meat, Veggies, and Fruits I do not buy at Superstore except for the odd thing that I don't find make a big difference like mushrooms or potatoes. That said, for all the other shit they're the cheapest by far even their regular prices sometimes beat other places sale prices. I'm not disputing potential terrible practices but the lowest price is still the lowest price. Shouldn't we be shitting on the rest for having their prices so much higher because at the end of the day isn't all what most people care about how much the bill is?

The story I used to hear -- like 15+ years ago -- was that at least Safeway and Save-On-Foods paid decent wages, whereas Superstore was just paying min wage. I knew for a fact that at one point, Safeway employees were really earning quite a decent wage. So potentially because of that, people don't shxt on Sobeys nearly as much? (And Overwaitea is "just" a regional player.)
Shouldn't we be shitting on the rest for having their prices so much higher because at the end of the day isn't all what most people care about how much the bill is?

I think IUD is the preferred method because it's a relatively simpler procedure. It's not that invasive from what I hear.

Well, after this news he told me he's going to Call Dr. Polluck, apparently he's the guy to get the procedure done...

^ give your friend a few more days to get over the shock. Its not the worst thing that could have happened, he may even warm up to the idea of 3.

I'm sure he'll warm up to it, it's just shocking news. I'm also sure he'll love the new one just as much, it just adds a new level of complexity and strain, but I'm sure they'll persevere. He's a good dad and person, I'm not worried about the baby, it's just a tough pill to swallow.

My brother just had it done a couple months ago and it seemed to be fine - I saw him that weekend and he was walking around just fine. I think he had to go jerk off into a cup a couple weeks ago to see if it worked. I'm told it's a very clinical experience as the procedure is really short (15 mins) - it's not like some hot nurse shows up and fluffs you to get you all set. You don't even get a tickle.

I actually just got it done 2 weeks ago at Willow. 2 kids is where I am good and I don't plan on a third. We talked with some friends who didn't do it because "what if something happens *knock on wood* they need to have another one"

That's not happening with us we are 37 this year. I know some of you had kids later but we just can't do it again when we are in our 40s. If knock on wood something happens to either of the kids we aren't replacing the lost one, neither are we interested in having a HUGE gap between kids. Just handling the grieve would be bad enough.

I read enough about accidents with ppl in their mid to late 40s and pop one out, that I am gonna nip it.

Willow is covered by MSP so it was $0 out of pocket, Willow has a huge wait list though and you need a referral from your family doctor now whereas last year you can just apply. The procedure is done with local anesthetic and tbh it was terrifying for me. I'm not great with surgeries or blood and even though I didn't watch it was still scary.

The actual procedure was done in 15 mins. There was really no pain but a lot pressure. You will have to wear a "athletic supporter" for the next 2 days which is really a cup to support and protect you area afterwards.
The forms make it sound a little scary but I had almost zero after effects except for being sore for a few days. I avoided lifting my kids for a few days but couldn't 100% get away with it. I had to bathe the little one and outstretched loud was the most challenging.

I'm mostly normal now after 2 weeks. There's still occasionally some discomfort and itchiness but overall it's fine. They ask you to go get your sperm tested after 12 weeks

I just had it done about 3 weeks ago at Pollack. My work benefits covered the cost.

Super professional and convenient process, book online, in and out in an hour. The process itself takes 15 mins. I looked into doing it public and have it covered by msp but apparently that procedures more invasive and longer recovery. Also booking an appointment was a pain in the ass with very few time slots. Because it's done at the hospital, would've taken half a day or so with waiting and preparation and whatnot.

Did it at New West by Jack Chan, young Asian guy. Friendly and talkative. Apparently Pollack himself has zero bedside manner.

No pain, just feels like somebody's flicking your scrotum. Was tender about the first 3 days but did not impact day to day activities much.

Was back to jerking off after a week.

Results: Overall, 26 238 cases of prostate cancer occurred among 2 150 162 Danish men during 53.4 million person-years of follow-up. Overall, vasectomized men had an increased risk of prostate cancer compared with nonvasectomized men (relative risk = 1.15, 95% confidence interval = 1.10 to 1.20). The increased risk of prostate cancer following vasectomy persisted for at least 30 years after the procedure and was observed regardless of age at vasectomy and cancer stage at diagnosis.

Turns out some something along the lines of estates and joint accounts, and all sorts of stuff that's way over my head (and I am just too poor to ever have a trust of any kind.)

Any experts on what this is and how bad it can be if the CRA finds out you're a bad boy and slaps you with a fine?

A simple one, is if you have a chequing/savings account (not RESP) in your kids' name but you control, that's a bare trust you have to report.

Penalties for knowingly or under circumstances amounting to gross negligence fail to file a return, make a false statement or omit required information in the return are the greater of:

$2,500 or 5% of the maximum fair market value of the property held in the trust at any time in the year

This new penalty is in addition to the existing penalties (maximum $2,500) for failing to file a T3 return, which continue to apply.

Thank you sir.

I don't know the full details of his situation, as he was quite frantic explaining the situation to me. Something to do with the mortgage, and taking out some money from the bare trust, or something along those lines. The form for the return is quite complicated as he says, but coincidentally, there was an article in The Globe & Mail by Rob Carrick who talks about the Bare Trust complexities, and that it can be simple, if your situation is simple (like in your example) but can get complicated depending on the situation.

In the end, I threw in the towel and told him to see a professional accountant.

SOOO how about that superstore.

I know i'm paying 20% more at Save On but the store/experience is superior.

superstore is the worst.

Their produce seems to be horrible and the milk always expires before the expiry date. Save On is top quality (it's $1.49 day today) I have been shopping at Fresco more and they seem to be decent and way better then Stupid store.

haha truly one of the great inventions on the modern era. We have 3 sqeeze bottle options in Vancouver for condensed milk but not for this brand yet.

Speaking of I saw a post yesterday about people talking about the squeeze bottle for the glass bottle of oyster sauce and that in the US some places have the squeeze bottle version but I've never seen it in my life here yet.

This is my challenge. The closest shop by far is a save on foods and it's such a timesaver.

Pricing is obnoxious, but the store itself is quite large/nice, and parking is easy.

We chalk it up to paying more for convenience and a nicer store.

Superstore: Parking is hard. Lineups to pay are very long. The clientele is different. The produce is never as good. Meat is never as good. And it never fails that no matter what I end up going in to buy, they are almost always sold out of it. Just the worst.

It's crazy that the thing that people would sacrifice for cost is the quality of food they put in their body.
Buy cheaper clothes or cancel cable or something.
I understand some people don't have the choice and they are already there, but when someone's wandering around a superstore in a $2500 outfit looking for cheap beef and canned vegetables it's a big what the fuck.

There are 3 “Asian grocers” around me and I refuse to shop at them. All their goods are garbage. I’ve never seen peppers or onions go bad as fast as theirs.

We do 90% of our shopping at Costco and I’m happy for it, consistently great produce, protein is about as good as you can get etc.

Superstore protein is on par with Walmart when I look at it, chicken breasts and drumsticks look fucking disgusting there.

As I’ve said before, we have the last Donald’s market right by us which we use to supplement our groceries and I feel like even it, a tiny independent grocery store shits on the big box places in both price and quality, which I have no clue how they do it but kinda underlines how bad we’re all getting ripped off.

Apparently this is a trend with a lot of processed food now -- instead of using the actual ingredients, simulated flavours are being substituted into the food to lower the processing/produciton costs. Whether this is done to keep prices from increasing too much, or whether the food processors are trying to turn a bigger profit is another topic to discuss, but at the end of the day, keep an eye on that list of ingredients when you are buying any processed food.

Apparently cocoa prices are skyrocketing, and some large volume chocolatiers are already using chocolate flavours instead of chocolate in their chocolates.

At this rate, I might have to start learning how to make chocolate on my own...

Pretty easy to tell which will be better just by comparing the ingredients:

LKK Panda: Water, Sugar, Oyster Extract (Oysters, Water, Salt), Salt, Modified Corn Starch, Flavour Enhancer (E621), Wheat Flour, Colour (E150a).

LKK Boat Lady: Oyster Extract (Oysters, Water, Salt), Sugar, Water, Flavour Enhancer (E621), Salt, Modified Corn Starch, Wheat Flour, Colour (E150a).

LKK Choi Sun: Water, Sugar, Salt, Oyster Extract (Oysters, Water, Salt), Modified Corn Starch, Wheat Flour, Colour (E150a).

Cheap oyster sauce (Healthy Boy): Water, Sugar, Salt, Fructose Syrup, Modified Tapioca Starch (E1442), Citric Acid (E330), Flavour Enhancer (E621), Oyster Extract, Caramel Colour (E150c), Xanthan Gum (E415), Oyster Flavour, Sodium Benzoate (E211)

The cheap stuff has 0.1% oyster extract in it. It has more MSG than oyster... It has more citric acid than oyster! lol. If you like it, that's great. Save money!

The LKK products all have the same ingredients, but in different order. "Premium" boat lady lists oyster first, and more MSG, so it'll have the most oyster flavour. Panda has a bit less oyster, and Choi Sun a bit less than that, and no MSG.

Prices here are $19 HKD for Panda ($3.30 CAD) for 500g, and $40 for Boat Lady ($7 CAD).Choi Sun seems like a decent product for $10 (1.20 CAD). Healthy Boy and stuff like that is probably like $5-10 at cheap markets. It's not worth buying that over Choi Sun if you want to buy cheap stuff.

I usually buy Boat Lady when it's on sale, but I may start using Panda now. I use a lot of this shit, it's an amazing umami bomb.

We checked with our accountant, and simple bare trusts like a bank account for your kids, you don't have to report if meets some basic conditions. Like it's all simple stuff like cash only and under $50k you don't need to report. Unless you had over $50k in Red Envelope money and deposited it. You're fucked.

am I really the outlier here? lol

I enjoy getting the bulk of my stuff from Superstore. Granted, when it comes to veggies and fruits, I usually go to T&T/Osaka etc. But when it comes to the basic necessities I keep at home, it's usually cheapest to get it all from Superstore. I will occasionally go to Walmart if I find they offer something I need for significantly less. For example, potatoes were $2.49/lb at Superstore vs $0.99/lb at Walmart. Ridiculous difference in price for the exact same product.

Anytime I go to independent or smaller places like Freshco for example, I feel like it's all worse quality, off brand shit that I have no interest in buying. There's also factoring in how much time I invest in going around to places just to save a buck or two. I value my time more than the savings. I absolutely refuse to buy things from Safeway/Save-On because they are so much more expensive than Superstore for a lot of the same products. They're also all further away from my home.

unit

We do go to Superstore a lot, but we also shop a few other places to make up our weekly groceries.

Dry goods typically I get from Superstore, their prices are hard to beat. Definitely the lineups are annoying, and they aren't always well stocked.

Produce I get from Crystal Mall, cause I am a C lai that way. Fresh produce and pork are usually from CM.

Very Asian specific things and seafood I would get from T&T. Superstore just doesn't carry the variety and selection I want. Also supplementing produce that I can't get from CM. T&T carries more variety but typically for a higher price if it's not a sale item.

I've been buying less produce from Costco than before because we just can't finish it. Too much waste. Costco is mainly for diapers when they are on sale, cat food, children's books, and other misc packaged goods. We still spend enough to make Executive membership every year.

Richmond doesn't have good options save for the veggie and fruit place at 5 and Westminster, sometimes I go there... but I agree with Eff-1, even though I'm a regular at Superstore... I find every time I go there I get angry, but it's hard to justify going to like 3 places for things when almost everything is there every time.

The ramp in and out of the Richmond one alone is enough to induce violence in a person on a busy day, a true lesson in how complete oblivious most people are.

The first and only time I've ever shopped at Superstore here in Victoria was after my company gave out PC Gift Cards in lieu of our annual Christmas Party during COVID in 2020 & 2021.

Can concur, made me angry, the "savings" (which IMO were not spectacular) didn't outweigh the inconvenience in the special trip needed to get there (our only superstore is in Langford, on the south side of the highway), the shitty shopping experience, the horde of people and the shitty parking lot.

Also, fuck loblaws and the westons.

Decades ago, Safeway employees were earning more than University professors and had all sorts of nice benefits such as birthdays off with pay. Not to mention the stores were fully staffed. The company model focused on service as priority. The prices were higher but, at the time, people would pay more for a better shopping experience.

Then along came Superstore which wasn't the bottom of the barrel but rather, it was the grime puddle the barrel sat on.

But to be fair, Superstore emphasized low prices in exchange for a shitty shopping experience. As the economic climate changed and basically got worse, Safeway and the other major stores had to change and follow Superstore's ways while trying to maintain their 'heritage'. It didn't go well. Save-On has been doing better lately, thanks to their marketing such as $1.49 days but they also absorbed a lot of Sobey's locations (Safeway & Thrifty alike) which did not seem to phase the competition bureau, fucking Jimmy.

Traditionally, all grocery stores would be closed on days like Boxing Day, New Year's day etc. but I remember Superstore being the first one to open up those days. Every other grocery player opened up the following year.

I still shop at Safeway but mostly because it's in walking distance from me so I go late at night and can get out quickly.

Superstore, like Walmart, is one of those companies that would permanently lower the bar for quality and contribute to that 'race-to-the-bottom' methodology in the name of 'saving money'.

I worked as Supervisors in both Safeway & Thrifty Foods but exited that industry almost 10 years ago. I witnessed the transitions from pretty decent companies to toxic hellholes. I'll never look back at retail with a smile...

This is as good as a regular who used to come in to the McDonald's I worked at in high school ordering a cheeseburger but no cheese. We would tell him, why not just order a hamburger? He always insisted on the cheeseburger with no cheese.

I had the same experience working at McD's when some middle aged white lady ordered the cheeseburger with no cheese. I replied "so you mean a hamburger?" and she said very rudely "NO, I said a CHEESEBURGER with NO CHEESE". So I was like, ok whatever bitch. Punched in the order and my buddy who was in the kitchen poked his head out and blurted "is this a joke?" :lol

That dumbass paid $0.30 extra for yellow paper rather than white paper. But hey, kudos to you if you like wasting money for no reason.

I know everyone on reddit complains about loblaws price gouging, but are they not literally the cheapest place for most stuff (on sale)? I swear my local chinese market is hella expensive and all the other retail ones are 25% more for most items.

It's probably related to the oligopoly that we have in Canada for groceries. Loblaws, Sobeys, Walmart, and Costco (in the West). We're lucky that we live in a port city, so there's a decent sized market of independent grocers that have access to lesser quality produce that the other stores won't take. Most places in Canada do not. Reddit is also largely made up of people who probably wouldn't dare step their foot into places like Fruiticana or Red Apple Market.

Loblaws is, on average, cheaper than the others (and Pattison's stores) and even more so when you cross shop with Shoppers Drug Mart for certain items and use the PC Optimum points program effectively. The shopping experience at Real Canadian Superstore is subpar, but there's always online shopping and pickup.

The majority of people probably don't optimize their shopping. The majority of Canadians are also overweight (and have become accustomed to a certain caloric intake) and consume a lot of red meat, which explains why people, generally, are ticked off.

An older EI guy once asked me for a double Big Mac with no meat.. nice troll job.

Back then we’d just charge for a 65 cent cup of tea for any burger without meat. Not sure what they do these days..

SDM is awful for prices lol. I buy absolutely nothing from them other than cough syrups and occasionally throat lozenges if they're on sale. Employees there will be the first to tell you they'd never shop there if it wasn't for their employee discount.

but they also absorbed a lot of Sobey's locations (Safeway & Thrifty alike) which did not seem to phase the competition bureau, fucking Jimmy.

Sobeys purchased IGA, Thriftys Foods and Safeway Canada, and it was actually the competition bureau that forced Sobeys to sell some safeway locations otherwise they'd have far too much market dominance. It was prevalent on the island, since Thrifty Foods is obviously big here.

In Greater Victoria, Prior to the safeway sales, we had something like 13 Thrifty Foods locations, 4 safeways, and 2 Save on Foods. Sobeys owning 17 grocery stores in our location would have been insane.

And the reason of course why it had to be Pattison/Save on Foods to purchase the Safeways, was to maintain the unionized workforce, that was a stipulation of the sale.

Most of our vegetables don't come by sea, being a port city makes very little difference other than maybe when there's a shortage and something is brought in from elsewhere. I was surprised to see China green onions because for some odd reason there was no NA ones available.

Some fruits do, but we don't get that much foreign stuff. Off the top of my head the only staple fruit that would come in by sea regularly would probably be bananas and pineapples. We occasionally get Chinese apples and Australian oranges. Would we even call pineapples a staple fruit?

The more exotic stuff are flown in by air like papayas.

A bit off topic but I started growing green onions this past year and it's ridiculously easy to do - I did it my herb garden while my neighbour just puts it in a pot of water by her window sill. Keep the bottom inch or two of it, stick it in water/soil and you've got infinite green onions.

I usually find that after harvesting them after the second grow, they don't grow back very well. So I buy them once, leave the bottom 1-2 inches in a cup of water. Let them grow and then use them once. Definitely super easy to do. I wonder if they would do better in some soil in terms of multiple regrowth lol. I've never bothered.

The problem with grocery stores in the Richmond core area is the insane traffic, esp along No. 3 Road. Yes, the stores are physically close to each other, but good luck trying to drive from one place to another.

One time on Saturday, it took me a frickin 20 min to drive through the traffic jam from Aberdeen to Lansdowne. Aberdeen to fxxking Lansdowne. Probably would have been faster had I walked it.
Being in Richmond, on just #3 road, you got superstore, 3 T&T; langford market, Price Smart, Foody World, Costco. Then you got Public Market and the asian market across the street.

I really can't complain at all. That's a lot of option on just a 5 km distance

Another interesting observation is -- Loblaws in Toronto are far more upscale than Superstore is (and I seem to think this upscale-ness is reflected in their prices as well). The corporate Loblaws brand that caters to the Superstore-sy clients seems to be No Frills. But in Vancouver at least, I find that No Frills doesn't aim to serve the same frugal clients that they aim for in Toronto. Instead, No Frill prices here are pretty expensive, but they make up for it by pretending to be a neighbourhood store, and aiming for the convenient factor.

I also used to shop a lot at Zehrs (Markets) bcos that's what my university town had. The experience there is pretty upscale and pleasant there too -- kinda like our Safeway here.

Didn't the store that was in that condo development on #5 & Steveston by the overpass used to be a proper Loblaws store?

I remember going in there once, felt very much Thrifty Foods/Safeway like, definately higher end than superstore.

That sure didn't last long lol.

Superstore is kind of a direct competition to Walmart, especially now that Walmart does groceries here. (I can't stand shopping in walmart even more than Superstore )

I used to visit that Loblaws for their discount stuff because they didn't have enough foot traffic to move products quick enough. Think most people in the area are used to the Save on Foods at Ironwood.

After Loblaws closed I wondered if they would replace it with a T&T since nothing similar is in South Richmond - it could capture some of the Ladner / Tsawwassen market which has a growing Asian population. But at this rate I wouldn't be surprised if T&T opens at Tsawwassen Mills.

It's pretty packed on weekends but very mellow during the week. Want to say it's just as busy as RC on a weekend but people are more spread out thanks to the larger mall footprint.

You don't park at the 88 parking lot. It's a frickin zoo, and the spots are pretty narrow. Look for street parking elsewhere -- there is usually something along Elliot.

But I usually like their meat -- both for price and quality.

My favourite is when the smoking uncles are all doing it near the air pump at the Chevron station. I always wonder how close (to the gas pumps) they'd need to get before some sort of explosion / fire happens :lawl:

my fav is when they stand in the middle of the road or stall you're trying to back in to and after a while slowly gtfo, or when they pull up and take 2 spots/park on the line.

i was speaking with one of the shop owners and apparently the uncles straight up refuse to stand away from store entrances and when called out on it and pointing at the sign they reply they don't speak english FailFish

It was a Loblaws City Mart and it was doomed to fail from the start.

Having a SOF in a giant plaza with other stores like LD and CT across the street was always going to be tough competition because City Mart was across the street on its own, so there's no walk-by traffic.

And cheap people living in Richmond wouldn't necessarily pay higher prices for a more premium-feeling store. Case in point: Superstore.

a little bit of a lineup. It moved along quite quickly as these unionized gestapo IKEA workers were quite diligent to ensure everyone has their ikea card. Those who didnt have one were taken aside and instantly….. gas…. I mean forced to sign up.

I got quite a bit of side eye from the kitchen staff for asking for three plates of meatballs (to share between 2 people).

Eh fuck you. If you don’t wanna dish out meatballs, don’t fucking be working there rolling your eyes and shit

At the very least, the British Royal Family is a *HUGE* tourism driver to their country. While they are certainly funded by taxpayers, I am willing to be that their net contribution to the UK GDP is far bigger than the average Briton.

Among the current Royal Family, Kate also one of the most well-liked, if not the most well-liked Royal Family member, so there is also that.

Assuming Kate is able to make a full recovery, I'm sure she'd be spending a good amount of her time doing charity work for cancer research and such. For someone with her level of star power, it will certainly attract more funding into the field.

Yeah, fuck cancer for sure.

I know from stories from one of my Aunts about her close friend's grandson dying from a form of cancer.

Which cancer? Leukemia. Cancer of the white blood cells in bone marrow.

Anyways, long story short. The young man passed away at age 23 from leukemia. -started feeling very sick with headaches and other symptoms after a student exchange trip in Japan. A bone marrow transplant could not save him.

Remember Fukushima in 2011? The dude was living near Fukushima at the time of the power plant meltdown.

Fuck cancer and fuck nuclear power/radiation.
