It’s just the Alberta-ness slowly growing within you
Soon you’ll be yelling at liberals, wearing a bass pro shop hat, and giving the side eye to immigrants.
I've been to the Bass Pro Shop down in Tsawwassen a few times and it sure is a different world in there. It feels like the place to go if you're either going to live off the grid or you're planning for the end times. Guns, dehydrated meal kits, outdoor cooking tools of all sorts etc.
I'm sure it's pretty normal for a lot of outdoor folks but for a city boy like me it was pretty weird to see.

I need advice if anyone has done a trip from Vancouver to Texas.
The GF and I are moving down to San Antonio for 3 months later in October, and we're planning to drive down. I've plotted out my route over the course of 5 days, looking to stop at a few scenic locations along the way.
Day 1 - Drive straight down to Baker City or Ontario, Oregon
Day 2 - Shoshone Falls ending in Salt Lake City
Day 3 - Arches Park to Durango
Day 4 - San Juan National Forest to Alamogordo
Day 5 - White Sands Park to San Antonio
Anything I should be aware of, places I'm missing, things to note? This will be the longest road trip I've taken thus far, I plan on installing a dashcam before we head down just in case, but outside of that any thoughts?
those bass pro shop hats are ugly. some ppl just like to show off their personality as loudly as possible.
Isn’t el bastardo down there in them thar hills?
He must be still lurking about on Revscene. Now, there’s one person I wouldn’t mind getting drunk or stoned with. Haven’t seen him since he checked out my rape dungeon……….. looking for old car parts, jbol.
Addendum: Mt. Rushmore is possible. If you or you gf are remotely amurican, it’s like a must see. If not, totally not worth it. When I went there, I actually saw grown adults cry. I shit you not. I, personally enjoyed the place. Go figure.

Not sure if you have done Yellowstone/Grand Teton. If not, I'd strongly suggest taking the slightly longer route via WA20 (it's beautiful route to drive. You leave I5 after Burlington-->Spokane, WA-->Yellowstone/Grand Teton and back to I84 near Salt Lake City). Then Moab, Alburquerque and to San Antonio.
If Moab isn't your thing, I'd suggest visiting Colorado... basically the other side of San Juan National Forest (which sits on the Southwest from Denver)
As for tips, I suggest getting an Insta360 and just install it on the car. With a BT remote, you can activate whenever. My friend got some beautiful footages that he uses as b-rolls for his work and he kinda hardwired it to the trunk so it's always powered and everything. Dashcam for safety... sure. But for something like this, where you probably won't take the same trip again, I'd record it if I were you.

Your routing is kinda out of the way on the way there but on the way back you could go to monument valley, antelope canyon, grand canyon, zion canyon, bryce canyon. Buy an annual pass for the national park, only $90USD

You got it perfect there, that was my plan. I wanted to see Zion but figured we might as well go that route on the way home. Since we're driving back middle of January, I'd like to avoid Colorado/Utah completely due to winter conditions, so I figured we'd drive back through Zion, and eventually Nevada and the west coast through Oregon, avoiding the mountains and snow.
Hehe, that I20 suggestion is fantastic too, it adds a few hours to the drive down, but I'll go that route, never driven that hwy before. I was dreading the boring slog down the I-5 which is one of my most hated drives, this will make the Washington portion much more interesting. I think we'll head via Burlington >I20 > Baker City.
Grand Teton looks wicked but it seems like it's a bit of a deviation out of the way to get there, Yellowstone I feel like we'd need a few extra days to really enjoy it (as opposed to only a few hours we'd have to check it out).

My friend and her bf did the move permanently and also drove down. They specifically said that they needed to avoid sundown towns. Her bf is black and she's asian. Apparently extreme racism is still a thing in these towns.

Some of these towns (Tacoma, Seattle) are definitely not sundown towns, it looks like we're pretty good from what I'm seeing here, most of them seem to be in the midwest.

New side quest. Priscilla wanted a minivan, so I've been designing something I'm pretty sure should exist: a Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT Minivan. Threw in a manual GT3 Touring to make it his and hers. Thanks @porsche and @westcoastcustoms for helping to make this happen.

Just remember that if you are taking WA20, I'm not sure when you are doing this trip, it's always closed during winter season. So, check status before you go. They get snow earlier than we do, so when you think it's still ok to go, they might have closed it already.
Edit: just saw you are doing it in Jan. Forget it then.

These guys are all kinda weird, if I had to rank our tech overlord/billionaire from weirdest to most normal it'd be something like:
- Musk
- Altman (there's a reason he's got a cult following yet tonnes of people have already jumped off the OpenAI ship)
- Zuck (probably is a robot from the future)
- Larry Page
Big Gap
- Bezos (having a midlife crisis right now but good for him)
- Cook (as boring as they come but a peak workaholic)
- Sundar
- Nadella (not weird at all)

At a certain point it was decided to basically make this an archive while keeping active members. I can volunteer to keep that going no problem, but having open registrations is a lot of actual work, and I don't know if ad revenue can cover that any more. I haven't seen what the revenue is in over 10 years, but I assume would not be very high no matter what the traffic is.

No to opening gates. No to new interface. No to change. Don't fix what ain't broken. People are welcome to create their own separate forum with hookers and cocaine if they'd like.
The younger generations don't use this ancient tech. The old folks who aren't already on here from before have no desire to join now. Opening the gates just leads to spam, scammers, and self proclaimed professionals/business owners trying to plug their products/services.
I like the idea of a closed community and see who's the last member standing decades from now.

Ditto.
I run a private vBulletin forum and was forced to upgrade for a variety of reasons. The moment the software was updated, posts and visits took a huge nose dive.
Forums like Rennlist etc. are just full of scammers who have devised clever ways of trying to swindle honest members. It's not fun having to deal with spam bots and scammers all day.

but I remember the old days, you had to take off the tire, scrape it with some rubber scrapper thing, apply the patch behind and then put it back on.

I literally saw this done the other day to gf's car. It surprised me that it can be done (safely) without removing the tire or deflating it. Make sure you have some bubbly water on hand to check for leaks after plugging the puncture.
It's a new car. Did you take the wheel and tire coverage?
But I'd recommend the inside patch vs plugging externally.

yah im just gonna buy a tire plug kit and do it myself. apparently, I don't even have to take off the tire, just jab the rubber thingy inside.....
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/-UTnDheAMcE
but I remember the old days, you had to take off the tire, scrape it with some rubber scrapper thing, apply the patch behind and then put it back on.
Plug is super easy DIY, 15 minute job at most.

So I bought a plug kit from crappy tire and it says on the kit that this is just temporary repair. In order to “comply with standard tire repair practices” it still needs an inside patch.
Have you guys ever plugged and tire and just left it like that ? My German Neighbor said it’s fine and I don’t need to get the inside patch.

I ran a plug in my last set of tires (Pilot Super Sports) for like 3-4 years with no issues.
I took the tire to Kal-Tire to get a proper patch who said there was too much "sidewall cracking" and refused to do it (there was some, but extremely minor) and wanted to just quote me new tires. So I just plugged it myself.
I also ran a plug in one of the tires of the last set of my F150's tires (BFG K02) for like 2 years no issues either, and that included pulling my trailer on dirt back roads a couple times.
So yeah.

So the internet and specifically Chris fix is a fucking liar. I wasn’t able to successfully plug the tire while it’s still on the car. I called bcaa and this 30 year veteran of the industry came and laughed at me.
He gave me some really good tips that ultimately made it successful.
1- take off the flat tire from the car stupid. Almost very little chance to do a proper tire plug while the tire is still on the car because the weight of the car on the deflated tire will make the hole deformed and likely unable to seal properly.
2- it’s easier when there is some air in the tire. Ideally if it’s still pissing out air then you insert the plug.
3- use some soapy water and spray the plug. If you have rubber cement even better
4- make sure that hole is reamed properly. Aka big enough. Make it as big as possible for you to insert
5- use your entire body weight to push that sucker in. That’s why there is no way to do it from the ground. You just can’t get enough leverage.

The other part of it is that it takes quite a bit of force to jam the plug in, so having it off the car so you can push straight down into the tire gives you better leverage on it.

Thats exactly it. he said the hole wasn't big enough, I needed to ream it out some more.
He also stated it's almost impossible to lay on your side and put enough weight onto the tire to get the plug in properly unless you REALLY REALLY reamed that hole big. In order to do that, the crappy Canadian tire... uhh tire kit.. isn't adequate. Need a proper reamer tool that has like a drill like head to it.

Q: What some white collar jobs that are well paying, relatively low stress and low social interaction? Strong preference towards remote work.
Some of you may recall that I suffered an illness earlier this year where I lost a lot of my hearing - enough that I'm medically classified as having severe loss. It's been a really hard, life altering change and I've made the decision to step down from my current tech exec job (at a small company) to look after my health.
I'm financially secure enough that I only need to work a few more years and make another $500-600k during those years before retirement so I'm hoping to step down into something that pays around $125-175k (my line of work is product management) but I want to consider other options but I really don't know if there's anything outside of my line of work that I could easily step into. I'm considering advising, consulting, and coaching but that's all still in the tech space.
Is there anything else I should be thinking about?
Edit: I should acknowledge that I'm very lucky that I can afford to make such a choice and not just have to tough it out and that it probably sounds really privileged to say I'm looking to step DOWN to a job that pays $125-175k.

Advising, coaching and consulting is pretty high on the social interaction scale. Also given how much engagement it requires I do t really see how it can be done effectively if you're hard of hearing.
Lastly, I assume you would branch out on your own to be an advisor/coach/consultant, which although being an entrepreneur may be flexible, it is also the most extreme level of stress and risk (but also the biggest potential for reward).

As to supafamous question, have you considered some sort of IT management position in the public sector? It would check the salary, low(er) stress, and partial remote work boxes. In theory, there'd probably be a pension as well, but you'd have to work long enough -- probably 2 to 3+ years of full time work? -- before you qualify to receive pension, and the actual pension amount would be pretty miniscule anyway.
This sort of public sector tech jobs generally have a hard time hiring candidates because their pay sucks compared to the private sector.

I dunno, I think the stats are pretty terrible on day trading and entrepreneurship. Could set him back even more.
Maybe riffing on that though, take over an existing business where they've absorbed all the risk for you already? I'm projecting here, but maybe running a neighborhood specialty coffee place might be a good semi-retirement.
You wouldn't want to actually completely cut yourself off socially, even if it is a lot more tiring than it used to be: I think that's how you get Alzheimers. I read somewhere that folks who lose their hearing are at way higher risk of developing dementia, because they lose the cognitive stimulation of continual social interaction.

Also I don't think the pay is that bad. My wife works in government and she's within the range that Supa wants to step down into. Either a senior individual contributor or entry management role would get you into [the lower part of] that range. And comes with the pension etc, as you mentioned.

A couple of my tech friends and I semi-joke about getting a job at Costco stocking shelves. No one to bother you, good benefits, etc. That one day is what I figure I'll do to keep myself active. I don't need to make $125k+ - that's just a number that leaves me living very comfortably so it's an option to go further down (I just need cashflow for the next few years).

Fair point - some aspects of this I find just fine for me. Basically the stuff that is tough for me are the high stakes conversations where many people are speaking (like a weekly exec meeting) or 1:1 meetings with my directs but stuff like 3rd party coaching (someone who doesn't report to me) is generally pretty easy and enjoyable for me. In my line of work I'd probably charge $200-300/hr as well so, in theory, I could have two hours of calls a day and make a pretty solid living.

This is more or less what I'm doing right now.
My income is fairly stagnant now. More or less related to the general macro-economic environment and industry shift in the business I'm in (CRE). I'm not really worried about money to bring food to the table and buy toys. But I also see almost impossible for me to reach a next level in term of income without waiting it out if I stay put. And with the fact that I plan to retire after kids are done college, I don't really have a lot of time to ride the economic cycles (probably another 1 or 2) to boost my income.
So, I'm planning to partner with people who I know work hard (like born serial-entrepreneur who can't stay put for even a few month) and develop some stable, but often overlooked foreign markets.

I think the priority checkbox for any job is great work-life balance and lower end stress. I don't mind collaboration and meetings - I just need to turn them into lower stress meetings - I've been in a leadership/management role (either reporting to the CEO or 1 degree away) since 2009 so just dropping people management and exec meetings is a big reduction in stress. The work that my direct reports do, while stressful to them, is easy street for me so some of this is relative. That said, less meetings and less collaboration, would be good - the job would be even easier for me if most of my day is heads down time (or async time - like working over Slack, reviewing docs etc).
Edit: I also want to minimise work travel - this is more to do with me just loving being a parent and that I hate being away from my kid and less to do with my hearing issues (though it's a factor).

Being an equity comped advisor is something that I had on my list as a down the road thing (like 7-8 years from now) - I would have wanted a stronger resume (that's gone up in smoke now) to do that.
Starting my business - I'd only do it if I thought I could build a successful and stable coaching business. I've dabbled by offering my time in exchange for donations and was pretty successful in getting interest so it's something to explore - I have decent reach here, I regularly have strangers reach out to me saying that they were told to come talk to me but I don't know if I can make enough money with it.

I think it all depends on what kind of return you are seeking and how comfortable you are.
I can see that you try to leverage as much as possible on your existing knowledge, but from my own experience, that might not always be the best use of resources. For example... many Youtubers started talking about topics they are familiar with. But ultimately shifted to topics that they are actually good at showing people.
In my case, I'm now venturing into a business that has little to do with what my knowledge can really offer. However, I know the people I'm working with and the numbers are quite solid.
Basically we are investing in chunks of few hundred G a piece with the expected recovery at around 6-12mths. The idea is then invest in more chunks and live off the cashflow once the initial craze subsides.
Ultimately, what I'm focusing here is cashflow. If I can achieve a stable say 50k (valued at today's money adjusted for inflation in the long term) a month at the time of my retirement in 10-15yrs... I think I will have just elevated myself into the next income bracket where instead of thinking buying Tesla as my next toy, I might be able to venture into buying Ferraris and Lambos.

Sorry to read about your health issues supa, rabid rat said it well though, being a little too far on the isolation scale can be very bad for cognitive health.
That said, communication can be through writing in a role like that, can it not? I really don't know about the tech industry though.
Is the choice to leave due to a discomfort caused by this new issue? Because I'm sure doing what you do, your skills to adapt to issues are probably well beyond the average person.

Maybe riffing on that though, take over an existing business where they've absorbed all the risk for you already? I'm projecting here, but maybe running a neighborhood specialty coffee place might be a good semi-retirement.
Hadn't considered that though it seems like it'd be a lot of work but maybe it'd be rewarding.
Totally, my odds of dementia are significantly higher now than before but staying active and social help a lot. My hearing aids also help as well - it's just that it can actually too much stimuli. Most of the time the hearing aids do their job well but there's stuff where it can only help so much - like if I'm not looking at you and focused on what you're saying I kinda can't understand you or I'm no good at telling the direction of a sound anymore. The acoustics of a room can make a big difference for me - hard surfaces and sharp edges make things a lot harder to hear.
That said, communication can be through writing in a role like that, can it not? I really don't know about the tech industry though.
Some companies are very async and writing heavy so those are ideal for me now but most are still very much about jumping on a call (1:1 or group).

Yeah, it's that it's much more tiring to have to listen to people especially when you have to really focus/concentrate on what's being said (let's say we're having a debate on something). I turn on closed captioning on a lot of my calls now when I'm tired b/c it's just easier for me to read what they say than listen to what they say - it makes me slower to respond but it lets me manage my energy better.
It's sorta like how you have to really concentrate when someone speaks to you in a language that you don't speak well - I have to be locked in ALL the time in order for me to understand people. It can be really exhausting to do that for 8 hours of meetings.

A senior product owner is going to net you 125-150k on the current market. The problem would be finding that job and then if they want to hire you, I can see them saying either you are over qualified and treat you as a flight risk, or they put you in the bucket of "has experience but hasn't done it for too long".
I'm not a fan of starting a business as the stress is not the same. A consultancy maybe, but getting that first 3 contracts is going to the hard part unless you already have an in.

I'm old enough (48) that ageism might even be a thing - do they let old people work in tech anymore? Don't they have to put me in a wood chipper?
By lucky circumstance (being shorthanded) the past 4-5 months I've had to roll up my sleeves and do individual contributor work and discovered/was reminded that I'm still effing great at it. It was definitely a factor in me feeling good about making the move but you're right in that this is definitely a risk.
Realistically if I can't go down the food chain enough then I'd go further up the food chain and look at the Staff/Principal PM roles - I don't really want that level of responsibility but at least I'm out of the people management/exec space and the money is great. I've seen folks like me transition to those roles pretty seamlessly.

That sounds pretty good too, and would let you get to retirement that much more quickly if you can just power through it.
We had a senior director of program management at work who - a couple of years ago - just say fk it, and went into some kind of super IC consultant role where he just seems to show up in random places at random times, every once in a while dropping a hot take. He seems to have fun with it.

48 isn't a huge deal. Tech has been around long enough that age isn't a big deal anymore.
If you can show that you've done the work in the past bit it'll take you out of the "haven't done it for too long" bucket but still can't shed the flight risk profile.
A principle/staff role sounds great, until you run into a company that expects that role to be a lead as well. Too many places expect a principle role to do dual duty as IC and a people/tech leader.
At the end of the day, it doesn't cost you anything but some time to try interviewing. Who knows you might land something.

Dont focus too much on the $$ aspect, just do something that you'll love and hopefully gives you a good reason to get up in the morning. If these gen z fuckers can do it, i don't see why we elder millennials/gen x cant do it. We all pounded in our hours to get ahead, start a family, achieve status, etc, etc.
But now that we are here, it's all just water underneath the bridge, and it's time to focus inward. Do what makes you happy bros.
i dont wanna be like my shrivelled old hag of a secretary who comes into work so that she can get social interaction.

Maybe it's just me and I don't mean to sound insensitive or disrespectful but I can't help but feel like what you are looking for might be a pipe dream.
Without knowing specifics of your background and specializations, generally from what I've seen tech/PM roles are oversaturated with supply vs demand.
Finding employement income of $125k - $175k where you can work independently and not participate in too many intense conversations seems kind of impossible to me in this economic environment, and in that particular field.
I could see someone with a professional designation (doctor, lawyer, engineer, something like that) could charge out that hourly rate just to read documents all day without requiring a ton of meetings with people.
But other than that, I think you might have to lower the salary expectations to something that's more of a desk job/administrative role?
That said, I am rooting for you and am super sorry to hear about your illness.

if you want no social interaction but make that kinda money, you can always join either marine industry or rail industry.
Conductors start at 70k (more now with their new contract) so probably 80k and you dont talk to dick squat all anyone other than your crew. Its just the hours are rough initially. Once youre past the 3 year mark you'll break 100k with a steady job
Deckhand on a tug also pays around that and once you do a few years of that, you can easily break 100k. Try seaspan they are always looking for people. Or hell check out the port of vancouver jobs, we always hiring

Hot take but what if you just...Retire?
Without knowing further details about your financial situation, whether your house is paid off, if your spouse works, kids ages, Investment returns etc. I can only assume you are in a really good financial situation given your past salary and saying you only need another 500K (Gross?).
I'm sure you've heard of the whole FIRE movement - Financial Independence, Retire Early which you might not want to do but has become quite trendy as of late. There's also subtle variations of this like LeanFIRE, BaristaFIRE, FatFIRE. You can google these if you're not familiar but basically the jist of it is, are you able to pare down your living expenses you might find out you have enough to live off of indefinitely.
But I don't mean to say to just kick back and move to a retirement home. Keep working if you must but I don't see how even taking on a PM role, let alone a principal PM role would give you the autonomy and lack of meetings that you are seeking. It's not executive level stress for sure but an entirely different stress with deadlines, issues and higher ups shitting on you. Sound like what you need is some routine, creative work that is more or less customer facing. Instead of Product Management how about a part time consulting role with a focus on sales support for smaller companies which might be more up your alley. Just my 2 Cents.
But yeah I'm rambling a bit now, so look into how much you REALLY need to live off of. Calculate your yearly expenses and multiply it by 25. Do you have that much in cold hard cash? If Yes then you're good, kick back and take whatever comes your way and don't stress about trying to make a 6-figure salary for the next 5 or whatever years.

honestly i've thought about when i retire hopefully fairly early, just working some really casual low paying job to supplement my retirement. basically hobby money. obviously it would have to be something that would be somewhat fun or social, not something soul sucking where your manager yells at you every day.

Good luck with that, even teens and students can't get menial retail jobs these days. Because of *ahem* a certain demographic coming to Canada. Unless something drastic changes what makes you think they're going to hire some geezers like us when it's our time?
Best we can hope for is they still take volunteers to talk to even older geezers so we still get that social interaction

i was thinkin something similar, over $100k who no stress and little social interaction is like hitting the jackpot.
engineers making over $100k IMO is rare and the level of responsibility and outward facing interaction is high. Either Sr PM, business dev engineering, or management. High stress and long hours.
my suggestion would be to lower the salary expectation and stretch out retirement. using engineering again as an example, $75k you could find intermediate engineering roles that would perhaps fit the bill better balancing stress and interaction, though engineering as a whole is stressful :lol

That said, there's still hope if you want a job like that, haha.
i always wondered if it's due to not having medical coverage and to cover cost of medication, which can be expensive in itself, which if true would be real sad.

lol i was thinking more home depot like the other old guys. working for 'fun' is so different than working because you need the money, so my standards are pretty low for that. of course a strong argument could always be made to just work an extra 2 years at a higher earning potential and then you would prob make more money than you would in the next 10 years of working part time at home depot, but yeah..

Not insensitive or disrespectful - fair points. Intensity is all relative - I'm not looking for none or little, I just need to lower it from what I experience now. Talking company budgets, preparing for a board meeting, having "I'm gonna fire you" convos with directs, negotiating with fellow VPs/C-Suite - those are all more draining and intense than "We gotta ship this next week" or doing a ranking of priorities in a team meeting. That stuff is pretty easy for me and I can do it at a level far above the level of pay I'm looking for.
Hot take but what if you just...Retire?

(Semi)-retirement is certainly possible - we could maintain our current pretty comfortable lifestyle with me only making $50-60k/yr. That could be as little as a couple consulting gigs a year or some desk job somewhere. I ultimately just have a short term cash flow problem b/c I'm sitting on a future payout (high 6 figures) in a few years that will pay off the house completely and leave me sitting pretty.
This has been a really helpful convo as I think I just assumed that I should just grab some smaller job and call it a day but there really are other options for me and ways of thinking about things I hadn't considered. You all have got my wheels turning a lot and I'm really glad that there's a group of folks like that I can talk this out with.
